Dorothy Riddick Carter

Dorothy Riddick Carter, 81, went to be with the Lord March 28, 2013. She was the daughter of the late Ophelia B. Brown and Bennie Lee Riddick. She was predeceased by her husband James Rudolph Carter.

Dorothy was a member of Trinity Christian Church and drove a school bus for the City of Suffolk for 45 years.

She is survived by son, Wayne Carter and wife Rose of Southern Shores, NC; grandchildren, Jon Carter and wife Nikki of Martin's Point, NC, and Heather C. and husband Dustin Daniels of Southern Shores, NC; great granddaughter, Breeze N. Daniels; great grandson Noah Slater Carter; brother Mills J. Riddick and wife Virginia of Powers Point, NC; sister Marie M. Pierce of Windsor, VA; several nieces and nephews with one very special niece, Cindy Luter; and very special pet, Dixie Rose.

A funeral service will be conducted Sunday, March 31, 2013 at 3 PM in the R.W. Baker & Co. Funeral Home and Crematory, 509 W. Washington St, Suffolk VA by Rev. Dustin C. Daniels, Rev. Steve C. Taylor, and Rev. Bert Pearce. Entombment will follow at Meadowbrook Memorial Gardens.

The family will receive friends Saturday in the funeral home from 7 to 8:30 PM and other times at the home of Cindy Luter.

Frances Winston Overton

Frances Winston Overton, a retired Obici Hospital Nurse, died April 1, 2013 at Obici Sentara Hospital.

A native of Norfolk, VA, she was the daughter of the late Dr. John Woolfolk and Gladys Beard Winston, and the widow of Dr. Frank L. Overton. She was predeceased by her brothers Judge John Winston, Dr. William Winston and Dr. Ralph Winston.

Mrs. Overton was a graduate of Louise Obici Memorial Hospital School of Practical Nursing. Formerly, she had been employed as a staff nurse at Forest Lakes Health Center in Charlottesville.

She is a member of Windsor Christian Church and attends Main Street United Methodist Church in Suffolk.

Survivors include her daughter, Margaret Elizabeth Yancey of Newport News, VA; sons, the Rev. Franklin Lawrence Overton, III of Durham, NC, and Duane Overton of Charlottesville, VA; four grandchildren, one great-granddaughter and several nieces and nephews.

Funeral services will be conducted Saturday, April 6, 2013 at 11:00 AM in the R.W. Baker & Co. Funeral Home and Crematory by Chaplain Woody Rae with burial in Holly Lawn Cemetery. The family will receive friends in the funeral home on Friday, April 5, 2013 from 7-8:30 PM. In lieu of flowers, the family requests donations be made to the building fund of Windsor Christian Church, P. O. Box 407, Windsor, VA 23487.

Mark Edward Renigar

Mark Edward Renigar, 54, of Waverly, formerly of Portsmouth, passed away on Sunday, March 24, 2013.

He was the son of the late William Edward and Mary Catherine Johnson Renigar.

Mark was a Carpenter 2nd Class at BAE-NSR.

He loved the outdoors and loved his family.

Left to cherish his memory is his wife, Dorothy G. Renigar; his children, Matthew C. Renigar, S. Danielle Renigar, Mark E. Renigar II, Maria B. Renigar-Masini, and Tabitha Renigar; a brother, Todd Renigar-Monis and wife, Trina; a sister, Teresa Lynn Stube and husband, Mark; his grandchildren, Bryce, Stephanie, Trysten, Hayden, Alyssia, Cameron, Addison, and Chayden; and numerous aunts, uncle, nieces, and cousins.

Pappy as he was affectionately known will be sincerely missed by many other children and adults alike.

The family will receive friends Thursday, March 28, 2013 at R.W. Baker & Co. Funeral Home, Wakefield Chapel, 11414 General Mahone Hwy., Wakefield, VA 23888 from 6:00 to 8:00 pm. A celebration of Mark's life will be held at 11:00 am Friday, March 29, 2013 at the funeral home.

Burial will follow at 1:00 pm Friday at Olive Branch Cemetery in Portsmouth.

In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be made to a charity of your choice.

Marvin Wayne Hinson

Marvin Wayne Hinson, 62, passed away peacefully on March 29, 2013.

He was the son of the late Janie Mills and William Madison Hinson of Roanoke Rapids, NC.

Marvin served in the United States Navy and was a veteran of the Vietname War.

He was retired from Newport News Shipbuilding and was a member of The Izaak Walton League.

He is survived by his loving wife, Linda Ruth Case Hinson; daughters Christina Nicole Hinson and Susan Elaine Hinson; her fiancée, Michael Wade; son Matthew Wayne Hinson; daughter-in-law Vicky Lyn Hinson; and step-grandson Brentley J. Maddox.

A viewing will be conducted Wednesday, April 3, 2013 from 4 to 6 PM with the funeral service to directly follow in the R.W. Baker & Co. Funeral Home and Crematory, 509 W. Washington St, Suffolk VA by Pastor B.L. Scofield.

In lieu of flowers, donations may be sent to the Wounded Warriors Project, PO BOX 758517 Topeka, KS 66675.

Page Hill Richardson

Page Hill Richardson, born in Winton, North Carolina, on December 28, 1914, she was the daughter of Rowland Braxton and Chlorine L. Hill. She was preceded in death by her husband, Roy, and four siblings: Wells Powell, Iris Dunn Hancock, Billy C. Hill, and Rowland Braxton Hill.

She was a graduate of Suffolk High School where she excelled academically.

Among her many community activities Mrs. Richardson was a longtime volunteer at Obici Hospital and for the Red Cross.

She was proud to be the first female deacon at Suffolk Christian Church and taught in the Beginners Department for many years.

Mrs. Richardson shared a love of golf with her husband, Roy, who died in 1997, and she worked with him in the operation and ownership of Richardson Theatres, Inc. In addition to all the above, she was noted for her artistic talents and exhibited in many local art shows.

Mrs. Richardson was loved and respected by her family as a wonderful mother, grandmother, and great grandmother. She was lovingly called Page by many in the family who were named for her including members of three generations. Survivors include a daughter and son-in-law Shirley R. and Aubrey Fitzgerald of Newport News; a son and daughter-in-law Roy R. "Bob" and Ginnie Richardson of Suffolk; six grandchildren: Audrey Page Bosselman (David), Lynn F. Mitchell (Willie), Ann Fitzgerald, Bobby Richardson (Karen), Martin Richardson and Thomas Fitzgerald (Dora); ten great grandchildren, many nieces and nephews, and sister Chlorine H. Murphy.

A funeral service will be conducted at 11 AM on Tuesday, April 2, 2013 in the R.W. Baker & Co. Funeral Home and Crematory, 509 W. Washington Street, Suffolk VA by Rev. Michael D. Halley and Rev. James T. Dunn with burial following in Holly Lawn Cemetery.

The family expresses special thanks to the caregivers at Nansemond Pointe for their kindness over the years. In lieu of flowers memorial donations may be made to Suffolk Christian Church, 216 N Main St Suffolk, VA 23434, or the South Eastern Virginia Chapter Red Cross, 611 W. Brambleton Ave. Norfolk, VA 23510.

Patricia Rowe Pretlow

Patricia Rowe Pretlow, 60, died June 4, 2013 peacefully at home surrounded by her loved ones.

She was predeceased by her father Robert H. Rowe.

Mrs. Pretlow, a teacher and guidance counselor, retired after 32 years with the Suffolk and Virginia Beach Public Schools. She received her Bachelor of Science degree from Madison College in 1974 and her Master of Arts degree in Urban Education from Norfolk State University in 1990. She was an active member of Wesley Chapel United Methodist Church.

She is survived by her mother Joyce M. Bell; her husband Thomas Kirk Pretlow; daughter Lila Kirk Pretlow of Suffolk, VA; son Justin Pretlow of Charlottesville, VA; sister Becky Cary and husband Neal of Suffolk, VA, brothers Steve Rowe and wife Marty of Mechanicsville, VA, Gary Rowe and wife Rhonda of Suffolk, VA; and numerous nieces and nephews.

A Memorial Service will be held Friday, June 7, 2013 at 3 PM at Wesley Chapel United Methodist Church by Rev. Ileana Rosario. The family will receive friends Thursday, June 6, 2013 from 7 to 8:30 PM in the R. W. Baker & Co. Funeral Home and Crematory, 509 West Washington Street, Suffolk, VA 23434.

Memorial donations may be made to Wesley Chapel UMC, 220 Kings Highway, Suffolk, VA 23432 or the American Cancer Society, 4416 Expressway Drive, Virginia Beach, VA 23452.

Agnes Irene Smelser

Agnes Irene Smelser, 81, a kind and loving wife, mother and sister went to be with the lord May 3, 2013. She was the daughter of the late Bithea and Grover Worrell. She was predeceased by her husband Everett F. Smelser, two brothers and a sister.

Irene loved the outdoors, to travel and especially the holidays. She was an active member of Beech Grove United Methodist Church in Driver.

She is survived by her son Mark Smelser and fiancé Karen Kecher of Chesapeake; sister Louise Boone and husband Howard of Suffolk.

The family will receive friends on Sunday, May 5, 2013 from 6 to 7 PM in the R.W. Baker & Co. Funeral Home and Crematory, 509 W. Washington St. Suffolk VA 23434. A funeral service will be conducted on Wednesday, May 8, 2013 at 11 AM in Grubb Funeral Home, 215 South 6th St, Wytheville, VA 23482 with burial at Galilee Christian Church Cemetery. A visitation will also be held on Tuesday, May 7, 2013 from 5 to 7 PM at Grubb Funeral Home.

Betty Cottle Pope

Betty Cottle Pope, 81, passed away May 13, 2013. Born in Rocky Point, NC, she was the daughter of the late Walter and Eunice Cottle. She was predeceased by a son, Michael Edward Pope.

She is survived by her husband, Joseph Pope; daughter, Betty Jo Drake and husband Randy of Suffolk, VA; son, Robert M. Pope and wife Jane of Prince George County, VA; eight grandchildren and two great grandchildren; and special friends, Dave Freeman, Lou Marshall, Bernice Creekmore and family.

A memorial service will conducted at 12 PM on Wednesday, May 15, 2013 in the R.W. Baker & Co. Funeral Home and Crematory, 509 W. Washington St. Suffolk, VA 23434. The family will receive friends 1 hour prior to the service. Burial will be private. In lieu of flowers the family requests that memorial donations may be made to Feed the Children, PO Box 36, Oklahoma City, OK 73101.
