U.S., Social Security Death Index, 1935-2014
January 1, 1847 - Died, in New York on the 15th inst. JOHN HEEKEL, Sail maker, U.S. Navy, aged 46 years.

January 1, 1847 - Mr. AIME GUILLET, of N. Orleans, was bitten by a dog which could not be found, and consequently no one knew whether he was mad or not. Mr. Guillet imagined that the animal had the hydrophobia, and all the ingenuity and care of his friends availed not to drive the idea from his mind. the apprehension of approaching madness haunted him night and day, and kept him in a state of inexpressible terror, under which his bodily frame, not very robust before, began to languish. A disease, called the false pleurisy, supervened, and with the sickness created by an imaginary ill carried him off. Mr. G. was of advanced age, a Frenchman by birth, a soldier of Napoleon, and formerly a member of the State Legislature of Louisiana.

February 18, 1847 - In Portsmouth, on Sunday the 14th instant, after a long and painful illness of Consumption, Mr. GEORGE N. DAUGHTERY, the eldest son of Maj. Abram DAUGHTERY, deceased, of Nansemond County. He was for a number of years a resident of New Orleans, from which place he returned to his kindred only one short year ago - such being the will of the Almighty that he should die amongst his friends, where he lived but to be loved by all who knew him. Some days before his spirit took its Heavenly flight, he professed religion, and became reconciled to death having found forgiveness in the Blessed Savior; in the thirty sixth year of his age.

February 23,1847 - Died in this place, on Sunday Morning, the 14th inst., after a protracted illness, MRS. ELIZABETH PORTER, aged 84 years. This venerable lady was a native of Portsmouth, where she had resided during her long earthly pilgrimage. She was the widow of an officer of the Army of the Revolution, and reared a highly respectable family of children, only two of whom, with numerous grandchildren, survive her. The relative and social duties of life were discharged by Mrs. P. with a fidelity and kindness of heart, that will be held in honored and lasting remembrance, by all who had the pleasure of her acquaintance, and she who lived so faithfully here, did not live only for this world; in early life the subject of this notice embraced the religion of the blessed Redeemer, and united herself with the Methodist Episcopal Church, of which she continued a most worthy member for the space of about sixty years, living in Christian charity with all who love the Lord Jesus Christ, and dying in peace, leaving to surviving friends the most cheering hope that her happy spirit rests in the Paradise of God. Ports. Feb 18th, 1847

March 11, 1847 Departed this life, at 7 o'clock, yesterday morning, Miss ANN MORTIMER BARRON, daughter of Captain WM. BARRON of the Continental Navy of the U. States. Captain BARRON was a Virginian by birth; born on Old Point Comfort, now Fortress Monroe. Early in life he settled in Newport, Rhode Island, where he married, and, at his death, left three children; two sons, and a daughter, the latter the subject of this notice.

She came (by invitation of Capt. Robert Barron, her uncle) to Virginia, in the year 1796, and has continued to reside here ever since. Her father was killed on board the Boston Frigate, by the bursting of a gun, while in chase of an enemy, on her passage to France, having been especially dispatched to take out the late President Adams, as our Minister to Holland. The present ex-President Adams was, with his father, a passenger at the time, and has a perfect recollection of the circumstance. Captain Barron was an intimate friend of Captain Tucker, who commanded the Boston; and, at his earnest request accompanied him on this occasion as his first Lieutenant -- although he was at the time awaiting a captain's commission to command the frigate Columbus, then building. The sons, both of them, died at sea, the elder, Samuel fell overboard from aloft and was drowned, the younger, James, died of the small pox, on his passage from Holland, in command of the ship Ulysses, belonging to this port. MISS BARRON, was through life, an exemplary and pious lady; well informed, affectionate, agreeable, decorous and courteous in her deportment to her friends, of whom she could justly claim many highly respectable, and deserving of her esteem. She was many years, and to the time of her death, a faithful instructress of youth, by whom her excellent percepts and example will long be affectionately cherished, as a member of the Baptist Church, for nearly 26 years, her exemplary walk and conversation will be entered {?} by the true disciples of the cross, so long as genuine piety has an advocate in that community of Christians. Her age was about 68 years. Her funeral will take place from the Baptist Church, on Cumberland street, on Thursday afternoon, at half past 3 o'clock, at which place and hour, her friends and acquaintances are respectfully invited to attend.

March 13, 1847 - (Sat.) DEATH OF THE REV. Mr. BELL -- We are requested to give notice that the remains of the REV. UPTON BEALL, will be interred tomorrow forenoon. The funeral services will take place in Christ Church commencing at 10:30 o'clock. The Church of Christ on earth, and the community of people in which he was placed to do the will of his Divine Master, have cause to mourn that this faithful Minister of his Gospel, has been recalled from the work in which he was so steadfastly engaged with so much piety of purpose and efficacy of example. And yet why should they grieve that h has gone, even thus early, to receive the reward of the faithful in the realms of everlasting bliss. Though numbered among the choicest jewels of the Redeemer here, the blessings of his own (Episcopal) congregation to his zealous and untiring ministry echoed by those of all other kindred denominations; though beloved, respected and esteemed in the walks of social life and enjoying all its sympathies - yet it seems good to Him who sent him among us, in the course of his inscrutable but unerring Providence to take him away even in the full tide of his usefulness; and we are called upon to bow in humble submission to His will. If he has left us to grieve for the loss of his labors of love, he has left us his example to console us.

March 13, 1847 - Died on Thursday morning, MRS. E MEINIRS, in the 67th year of her age, after a short protracted illness. The friends and acquaintances are respectfully invited to attend the funeral, at the residence of Mrs. J. Burgess on Brewer street, Friday morning, at 10 o'clock.

July 23, 1849 - On Wednesday morning last, the 18th inst. In the 33d year of her age, FRANCES SELDEN GARDNER, wife of Commander Wm. H. Gardner, U.S. Navy, after an illness, though brief, of intense suffering.

August 2, 1849 - In this city, 28th July, of Congestion of the brain, Mr. WM. L. COSEWELL, in the 42nd year of his age, formerly of Boston, Mass., but for the last 3 or 4 years a resident of this city. [Boston papers please copy]

August 2, 1849 -In Baltimore, on the 29th ult. CAROLINE aged 21 months and 13 days, daughter of Henry and Fredericka ERSPENBECK.

August 3, 1849 -- Died, on Tuesday evening last, at 6 o'clock, WILLIAM T. infant son of Wm. T. and Sarah HARRISON, aged 1 year and 19 days.

August 3, 1849 - Died on the 29th July, at the residence of her husband in the county of Isle of Wight, Mrs. EVELINA BOYKIN, in the 32d year of her age, wife of Gen. Francis M. Boykin, Representative in the House of Delegates from that county.

August 8, 1849 - Died on Sunday morning, the 5th inst. After an illness of several weeks, which she bore with Christian resignation, Mrs. DIADEMA HALL, consort of H.T. Hall, of this city inn the 22d year of her age. The deceased, though formerly from Princess Anne county, has for the last then years resided in our community. She has left a husband and child with numerous friends and relatives to lament her unexpected departure. She was a kind and devoted wife, the indulgent parent, the warm friend, beloved and respected by all who had the pleasure of her acquaintance. Mrs. H. was a member of the Methodist Protestant Church, and showed by her pious walk and conversation that she adorned the doctrine which she had long professed. It is a melancholy hour in which the writer is deprived of an affectionate friend. But however afflicting it may be to take the last lingering look of one who is dying in full triumph of faith, perfectly in her senses and resigned to God the author of her faith, ready at any moment to be conveyed by a convoy of Angels to a blissful immortality, - Blessed are they who die in the Lord.

August 8, 1849 - Died on the 5th inst. After a lingering illness of Consumption, Miss ELIZABETH L. GILBERT, daughter of Mathew H. and Elizabeth Gilbert, of this city, aged 22 years, four months and 8 days.

August 8, 1849 -- On Friday Morning last, the 3d inst., LEWIS MAURY, son of Lieut. James H. NORTH, U.S. Navy, aged 15 months.

August 11, 1849 - Died, on Thursday, the 2d inst. After an illness of but short duration, but characterized by much suffering, produced by that dreadful scourge to our race, the cholera, THOMAS TWINE, Esq., of Buckrow, near Old Point, aged 59 years. Mr. T's death is deplored by all who knew him, for he was mild and unassuming in his manners, affectionate in his disposition - an indulgent husband, a kind and hospitable friend - a good master - and a strictly honest and upright man - his last hours although marked by some pain, were peaceful, and his last words were "meet me in heaven."
