Mary Williams Nuckols, 81, of Wytheville, Va., died Monday, June 23, 2003, at her residence.

Funeral services will be held Wednesday, June 25, at 11 a.m. at the Barnett Funeral Home Chapel with the Rev. Joe Carrico and the Rev. Donald E. Stansell officiating. Interment will follow in the Davis cemetery.

She was born in Wythe County Aug. 9, 1921.

She was preceded in death by her husband, Earnest Pierce Nuckols; her parents, John Fletcher Williams and Willie Hill Eversole Williams; and a son-in-law, Jerry Fields.

Survivors include two daughters and a son-in-law, Janet Fields of Concord, Va., and Marsha N. and Ronnie H. Crigger of Wytheville, Va.; one son and daughter-in-law, Warren D. "Pete" and Betty R. Nuckols of Wytheville, Va.; six grandchildren, Michael Crigger, Katrina Crigger, Lacy Crigger, Rodney Fields, Darren Fields, and Debra Riley; eight great-grandchildren, Joshua Fields, Lauren Fields, Nicole Riley, Amber Riley, Hailey Riley, Cody Crigger, Daniel Crigger, and Lela Amburgey; two brothers and sisters-in-law, Robert R. and Verna Williams of Cripple Creek, Va., and Trent D. and Barbara Williams of Geneva, N.Y.; and several nieces and nephews.

The family will receive friends Tuesday, June 24, from 6 to 8 p.m. at the Barnett Funeral Home.

Luella Vipperman Authenrieth

Luella Vipperman Authenrieth, 86, of Churchville, Va., formerly of Wythe County, Va., died Sunday, April 20, 2003, in Hilltop Haven in Staunton, Va.

Funeral services will be held Thursday, April 24, at 11 a.m. at the Lindsey Funeral Home Chapel in Rural Retreat, Va., with the Rev. Norb Bennetts Jr. officiating. Interment will be in Rosewood Memorial Gardens, Rural Retreat, Va.

She was born in Nebraska.

She was preceded in death by her husband, Willie Franklin Authenrieth; her parents, Andrew J. and Eva Mary Schneider Vipperman; one brother, Louis A. Vipperman; and seven sisters, Agnes V. Sluder, Virgie V. Whitley, Fern Vipperman, Ruby V. Cook, Myrtle V. Zellman, Crystal M. Vipperman and Anna Blanch Vipperman.

Survivors include one son and daughter-in-law, William F. and Barbara Authenrieth of Amarillo, Texas; one daughter and son-in-law, Juanita S. and Roger Miller of Churchville, Va.; three grandchildren and spouses, Debbie A. and Bryon Wilson, Sandy and Shelton Mann, and Willie F. Authenrieth Jr.; four great-grandchildren, Amber Authenrieth, Ashley Authenrieth, Andrea Mann and Daniel Mann; one brother and sister-in-law, Clarence and Betty Vipperman of Dalzell, S.C.; a sister-in-law, Rachel Vipperman of Rural Retreat, Va.; and several nieces and nephews.

The family will receive friends Wednesday, April 23, from 6 to 8 p.m. at the Lindsey Funeral Home.

The family suggests that those who prefer may make memorials to the AMC Hospice of the Shenandoah, P.O. Box 215, Fishersville, VA 22939.

Luther Lawson "Tony" Lindamood

Luther Lawson "Tony" Lindamood, 87, of Wytheville, Va., died Saturday, April 19, 2003, at Asbury Place of Wytheville, Va.

Funeral services will be held Monday, April 21, at 8 p.m. at the Lindsey Funeral Home Chapel in Rural Retreat, Va., with the Rev. Jack Rudderford officiating. Interment will be held Tuesday, April 22, at 11 a.m. at the Pleasant Hill cemetery in Groseclose, Va. Military rites will be conducted by Marion V.F.W. Post No. 4667.

He was born in Mercer County, W.Va. He was a veteran of the U.S. Navy.

He was preceded in death by his parents, Robert Newton and Arra Radea Leedy Lindamood; a daughter, Rosalita Linda Lindamood; four sisters, Rosa Ellen Arnold, Ina Catherine Miller, Blanche Louise Teague and Martha Eldridge Goodman; and two brothers, William Maxcil Lindamood and Marvin Talmedge Lindamood.

Survivors include two daughters, Carmen Suzette Hosaflook of Kent Store, Va., and Marchenka Maria Lindamood of Charlottesville, Va.; three sons, Vincent Eric Lindamood of Miami, Fla., Louis Allen Lindamood and Anton Andras Lindamood, both of Charlottesville, Va.; two sisters, Edna Ruth Crigger of Wytheville, Va., and Ollie Victoria Richardson of Rainsville, Ala.; several grandchildren, nieces and nephews.

The family will receive friends Monday, April 21, from 6 to 8 p.m. (service time) at Lindsey Funeral Home.

Helen Penley Hardy, 91, of Roanoke, Va., died Friday, April 4, 2003, at the Alterra Clare Bridge Nursing Home in Roanoke, Va., where she had been a resident for the past few years.

Funeral services will be held Monday, April 7, at 11 a.m., at St. Matthew's Lutheran Church in Bland, Va. Burial will be in the Temple Hill cemetery, Bland, Va.

She was born in Bland, Va., and lived there until 1976, when she and her husband moved to Ridgewood Farms in Salem, Va. She taught mathematics and French at Bland High School for over 30 years after graduating from Radford College in 1927. In Roanoke, Va., she was an active member of the Thursday Morning Music Club and the Raleigh Court Presbyterian Church.

She was preceded in death by her husband of 53 years, Sam L. Hardy Sr.; her parents, Way and Agnes Wohlford Penley; and her brothers, Gordon Penley and John Starnes "Buddy" Penley.

Survivors include one son and daughter-in-law, Sam Jr. and Mercedes Hardy of Roanoke, Va.; two daughters and sons-in law, Elizabeth and David Hubble of Export, Pa., and Ann and Elmer Beardshall of Hattiesburg, Miss.; eight grandchildren and their spouses, Mark Hubble of Columbus, Ohio, Jay Hubble of Chicago, Ill., Greg and Colleen Hubble of Rineyville, Ky., Kimberly Hardy of Vernon, Conn., Linsley Beardshall and Ryan Michael of Flowery Branch, Ga., William and Amydell Beardshall of Houston, Texas, Lisa and Marc Hirshorn of Roanoke, Va., and Jennifer and David Boush of Roanoke, Va.; seven great grandchildren, Dalton Hubble and Nathan Hubble, both of Rineyville, Ky., John Ryan Michael and Anna Michael, both of Flowery Branch, Ga., Lauren Hirshorn, Emily Hirshorn and Alexis Boush, all of Roanoke, Va.; four nieces, Martha Penley Umberger of Wytheville, Va., Jean Penley Harman of Willis, Va., Dorothy Penley Dickens of Florence, S.C., and Molly Penley Thompson of Bland, Va.

The family will receive friends Monday, April 7, at the Lutheran Presbyterian Church Fellowship Hall in Bland, Va., immediately following the burial service.

Gladys Lawrence Harner, 81, of Wytheville, Va., died Friday, Feb. 28, 2003, in Edgemont Center, Wytheville, Va.

A memorial service will be held Monday, March 3, at 11 a.m. in the chapel of the Grubb Funeral Home, Wytheville, Va., with Vicar Harvey Atkinson officiating. Interment will be in the West End cemetery, Wytheville, Va.

She was preceded in death by her husband, Conard Harner; and a son, Harry Harner.

Survivors include one daughter, Peggy Heim of Baltimore, Md.; one son, Billy Harner of Jacksonville Fla.; two sisters, Doris Pettyjohn and Imogene Vick; one brother, Vance Lawrence; one sister-in-law, Beulah Koontz; three grandchildren, Cindy Heim, Douglas Heim and Edward Heim; and several nieces and nephews.

In lieu of flowers donations may be made to Holy Advent Lutheran Church or the American Cancer Society.

Hazel Swinney Kirby Patterson

Hazel Swinney Kirby Patterson, 75, of Roanoke, Va., formerly of Wytheville, Va., died Monday, Feb. 24, 2003.

Memorial services were held Saturday, March 1, at 2 p.m., at the Lotz Salem Chapel, Salem, Va., with the Rev. Everett Kier Jr. of Salem Baptist Church officiating.

She was a resident of Lakeview Manor in Roanoke, Va. She was born April 12, 1927, in Grayson County, Va.

She was preceded in death by her parents, Otis and Sallie Swinney; and her husbands, Marvin Kirby and Edgar "Pat" Patterson.

Survivors include two sons and daughters-in-law, Jack and Kathy Kirby of Roanoke, Va., and Jessie and Debbie Kirby of Denver, N.C.; her special grandchildren, Joel Kirby of Roanoke, Va., Kristi Kirby of Blacksburg, Va., Dr. David Jessie Kirby of Fort Walton Beach, Fla.; sisters, brothers and their spouses, Dorothy and Walter Stevens, Belva Jones, Donald Swinney, Boyce and Virginia Swinney, Edna and Buck Elliott, Grady and Brenda Swinney, Janice and Ed Lee, all of Spartanburg, S.C.; a sister-in-law, Ada Kirby of Wytheville, Va.; and several nieces and nephews.

Memorials may be made to the Salem Baptist Church, 103 North Broad Street, Salem, VA 24153-3798.

Martha Jane Saunders Cobb

Martha Jane Saunders Cobb, 82, of Rocky Gap, Va., died Friday, March 28, 2003.

Funeral services will be held Tuesday, April 1, at 1 p.m. at the Tynes Chapel A.M.E. Zion Church in the Dry Fork section of Rocky Gap, Va., with the Rev. Andrew Montgomery officiating. Interment will be in the Hoagan's Family cemetery in Rocky Gap, Va.

She was born in Rocky Gap, Va., on Feb. 22, 1921, the 11th of 12 children of Powell and Linia Price Saunders. She was educated in the public schools of Rocky Gap, Va., and graduated from Genoa High School in Bluefield, W.Va. On Oct. 15, 1944, she married Jimmie A. Cobb of Portsmouth, Va. She was a member of the Mt. Olive Baptist Church, Jersey City, N.J. Prior to moving to her birthplace of Rocky Gap, Va., she served on the Willing Workers Committee, Pastor’s Aide Committee and the Scholarship Fund Committee. Her work continued when she joined Tynes Chapel A.M.E. Church in Rocky Gap, Va., working as president of the Women’s Home and Overseas Missionary Society, and chairman of the kitchen committee.

She was preceded in death by eight brothers, Eppie Saunders, James Saunders, Abe Saunders, Cernal Saunders, Fred Saunders, Moses Saunders, Flemming Saunders, and Archie Saunders; two sisters, Octavia Tynes and Ida Cecil; and a grandchild, Claudette Spann.

Survivors include her husband of 59 years, Jimmie A. Cobb; two daughters, Jacqueline Johnson and Mattie Long; two sons, Ralph A. Cobb Sr. and Vernon R. Cobb Sr.; seven grandchildren, Paulette Forte, Rubin Spann Jr., Carolyn Linia Cobb, Ralph A. Cobb Jr., Vernon R. Cobb Jr., Fredrick Dobson and Pastor Keith O. Johnson; four great- grandchildren, Anthony Forte Jr., Sean A. Cobb, Ashley L. Cobb, and Arriana Johnson; one sister, Freda Scruggs of Rocky Gap, Va.; two sisters-in-law, Estella Ferguson Saunders and Katherine Johnson Saunders; two daughters-in-law, Carolyn L. Cobb and Marjorie Luc Cobb; one son-in-law, Raymond Johnson; a special nephew, Connie T. Cecil; and many nieces, nephews, cousins and friends.

The family will receive friends Tuesday, April 1, from 9 a.m. until 1 p.m. (service time) at the Tynes Chapel A.M.E. Zion Church.

Shirl G. Gravley, 66, of Wytheville, Va., died Friday, March 28, 2003.

He was born in Wythe County, Va.

He was preceded in death by his parents, Charlie J. and Pearlie Mae McGlothin Gravley; one sister, Ann Waller; seven brothers, Howard Gravley, Harvey Gravley, Charlie Gravley, Buford Gravley, Malcolm Gravley, Marvin Gravley and Kenneth Gravley.

Survivors include two daughters, Priscilla Alley of Wytheville, Va., and Rebecca Scott of Roanoke, Va.; one son, Calvin Gravley of Rocky Mount, Va.; two granddaughters, Andrea Scott, and Michelle Scott; two grandsons, David Alley Jr. and Jason Akers; two sisters and a brother-in-law, Violet Davis of Bassett, Va., and Frances and Clyde Pauley of Max Meadows, Va.; and several nieces and nephews.

Callie Odessa Bevins Green, 93, of Bland, Va., died Saturday, March 29, 2003, at Asbury Place, Wytheville, Va.

Funeral services will be held Monday, March 31, at 1 p.m. in the Highland Funeral Service Bland Chapel in Bland, Va., with the Rev. Steve Johnson officiating. Interment will be in the Bland cemetery, Bland, Va.

She was born in Wise, Va.

She was preceded in death by her husband, William Nye Green; her parents William Lee and Polly Russell Bevins; six sisters and one brother.

Survivors include three sons and daughters-in-law, John R. and Elizabeth Green of Wytheville, Va., Bobby and Kathy Green of Bland, Va., and James "Jimmy" and Jean Hayes of Tarpon Springs, Fla.; one daughter, Anna R. Shope of Nokesville, Va.; two brothers, Harmon Bevins of Mineral, Va., and Russell Bevins of Pound, Va.; one sister, Ruth Layne of Edinburg, Va.; 12 grandchildren and eight great-grandchildren.

The Rev. George Dale Johnson, 76, of Galax, Va., died Sunday, March 30, 2003, in the Waddell Nursing Home, Galax, Va.

Funeral services will be held Wednesday, April 2, at 11 a.m. at the Highland Funeral Service Bland Chapel, Bland, Va., with the Rev. Charles Starks, the Rev. Doug Hyndrich and the Rev. Lee Ellis officiating. Interment will be in the Red Oak cemetery, Ceres, Va. Graveside military rites will be conducted by Grover King Post No. 1115, V.F.W.

He was a U.S. Navy veteran of World War II, a U.S. Army veteran of the Korean Conflict and served on the U.S.S. Taussig, Southwest PAC, 746 in Germany and France. He entered the (United) Methodist ministry in 1962 and served as pastor in Ceres, Va., Bland, Va., Cripple Creek, Va., Wytheville, Va., Galax, Va., Morristown, Tenn., and Chatham Hill, Va. He was a member of the Grover King Post No. 1115, V.F.W., a charter member of the Ruritan Club in Ceres, Va., member of the Bland Kiwanis Club and the Fairview Ruritan Club.

He was preceded in death by his parents, Samuel Clark Johnson and Isabell Shumaker Johnson Beck Hawkins; two stepfathers, Henry Beck and John Hawkins; and two brothers, Ralph Johnson and Ray Johnson.

Survivors include his wife, Etoile B. Johnson; one son and daughter-in-law, Chuck and Becky Johnson of Bland, Va.; two daughters and sons-in-law, Patricia and Jim Steffey of Gate City, Va., and Debbie and Mike Cassell of Nicklesville, Va.; three granddaughters, Erin Johnson, Beth Harden and Regan Johnson; three grandsons, Samuel Cassell, Ben Johnson and Daniel Cassell; two step-granddaughters, Amanda Steffey and Malinda Steffey; one sister, Ruth Matthias of Ft. Worth, Texas; one half sister and half brother-in-law, Joyce and Bob Perry of Temple, Ga.; three half brothers and half sister-in-law, Williams Beck of Maryland, the Rev. Louis Beck of West Virginia, and Donald and Judith Hawkins of San Angelo, Texas; and several nieces and nephews.

Funeral services will be held Wednesday, April 2, at 2 p.m. at the Petunia Christian Church in Wytheville, Va., with the Rev. Robert Johnson officiating. Interment will be in the Mt. Pleasant cemetery, Wytheville, Va.

She was born in Wythe County, Va. She was a member of Petunia Christian Church (Disciples of Christ).

She was preceded in death by her husband, Robert G. Layne; a son, Robert Kirby Layne; her parents, William Henry Blessing and Mary Adams Blessing; and a grandson, Robert Von Brewster.

Survivors include two daughters and sons-in-law, Mary K. and Cecil Lambert of Wytheville, Va., and Daisy and Paul Brewster of Tazewell, Va.; three grandsons and their spouses, Kelly and Donna Lambert of Chesnee, S.C., Kirby and Lisa Lambert, and Kevin Lambert, all of Wytheville, Va.; one great-grandchild, Kayla Lambert of Chesnee, S.C.; two great-stepgrandchildren, Crystal Wynn and Stacy Thomas; two great-great-stepgrandchildren, Jacob Wynn and Joshua Wynn; one sister, Daisy M. Rickey of Kernersville, N.C.; and several nieces and nephews.
