Opal C. Ogle, 97, of Brethren Village, Pa., formerly of Carroll County, Va., died Thursday, May 29, 2003.

Funeral service will be held Wednesday, June 4, at 1 p.m. at the Pine Grove Primitive Baptist Church, Carroll County, Va. Burial will be in White-Allen cemetery, Carroll County, Va.

She is survived by three daughters and a son-in-law, Joyce D. Shaffer of Manheim, Pa., M. Laverne and C. Eugene Carpenter of Penryn, Pa., and Thelma F. Haddad of Lititz, Pa.; two sons and daughters-in-law, V. Kermit and Marjory Urquhart Ogle of Manheim, Pa., and V. Dale and Sandra LeCalsey Ogle of Lancaster, Pa.; 14 grandchildren, 27 great-grandchildren and seven great-great-grandchildren.

The family will receive friends Wednesday, June 4, from noon to 1 p.m. (service time) at the Pine Grove Primitive Baptist Church, Carroll County, Va.

Julia Margaret Parmesano Parson

Julia Margaret Parmesano Parson, 100, of Staunton, Va., died Sunday, June 1, 2003, at her residence.

Funeral service will be held Wednesday, June 4, at 10 a.m. at the Henry Funeral Home Chapel in Staunton, Va., with Father John A. Abe officiating. A graveside service will be held Wednesday, June 4, at 4 p.m. in the Concord United Methodist Church cemetery in Stony Creek with Father Dennis McAuliffe officiating.

She was born July 7, 1902, in Elkins, W.Va. Before retiring, she was a teacher at Wytheville High School. She was a member of St. Francis of Assisi Catholic Church. She was the last surviving member of her immediate family.

She was preceded in death her husband, Leslie Parson; her parents, Vincent and Barbara Crovo Parmesano; four brothers and two sisters.

Survivors include several nieces and nephews.

Memorial donations may be made to St. Francis of Assisi Catholic Church, 126 N. Augusta Street, Staunton, VA 24401.

Elmer Wayne Tickle

Elmer Wayne Tickle, 75, of Bland, Va., died Friday, May 30, 2003, in a Bluefield hospital.

Funeral service was held Sunday, June 1, at 2 p.m. at Newberry Funeral Home in Bland, Va., with the Rev. Lee McIntosh and the Rev. Doug Hyndrich officiating. Burial was in the Bland cemetery, Bland, Va.

Born April 15, 1928, in Bland County, Va., he was a lifelong resident of Bland, Va. He retired from the Tazewell County Correctional Department. He was a member of the Bastian Union Church and was a veteran of the U.S. Army.

He was preceded in death by his parents, Lemuel Hezekiah and Ida Louise Blankenship Tickle; three brothers, Fred Tickle, Jesse Tickle and Everett Tickle; three sisters, Mary Lou Tickle, Josephine Pauley and Mildred Green.

Survivors include his wife, Nellie R. Tickle; two sons and daughters-in-law, Tim and Mary Lee Tickle of Rocky Mount, Va., and Barry and Lisa Tickle of Bland, Va.; one brother and sister-in-law, Kent and Margaret Tickle of Bland, Va.; one sister, Mable Tickle of Bland, Va.; and four grandchildren, April Tickle, Ashley Tickle, Elizabeth Tickle and Alisha Tickle, all of Bland, Va.

Memorial contributions may be made to the Bastian Union Church.

Russell Frank "Smily" Puncochar

Russell Frank "Smily" Puncochar, 68, of Vienna, Va., died Tuesday, April 29, 2003, at his residence.

A Mass of Christian burial will be celebrated Thursday, June 5, at 8:45 a.m. at Fort Myer Old Post Chapel. Inurnment with full military honors will be held in Arlington National cemetery.

He was born June 12, 1934, in Berwyn, Ill., a son of Joseph Charles and Blanche Pechous Puncochar. He was an airline pilot captain.

He is survived by his wife, Patsy Callahan Puncochar; a daughter, Stephanie L. Ennis; and a grandchild, Shiloh.

In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be made to the American Parkinson's Disease Association, 1250 Hyland Blvd., Suite 4B, Staten Island, NY 10305.

John Edwin Thompson

John Edwin Thompson, 67, of Rocky Gap, Va., died Thursday, May 29, 2003, at his residence.

Funeral services will be held Saturday, May 31, at 11 a.m., at the Rocky Gap United Methodist Church with the Rev. Jeff Callahan officiating. A graveside service and interment will be held Saturday, May 31, at 4 p.m. in the Burke Memorial Park, Morganton, N.C., with Dr. Paul Felker officiating. Graveside military honors will be conducted by American Legion Post No. 234, Valdese, N.C.

He was a member of the Rocky Gap United Methodist Church and served on the Board of Directors of the Bland County Clinic. He was a retired U.S. Air Force Major with 22 years of service and was a retired agriculture teach with the Bland County School system after 21 years of teaching everything from forestry to welding.

He was preceded in death by his parents, Mangus and Zelda Atwell Thompson.

Survivors include his wife of 24 years, Gwen A. Garrou Thompson of Rocky Gap, Va.; two sons and daughter-in-law, Scott and Cyndi Thompson, and Mark Thompson, all of Fredericksburg, Va.; three stepchildren and their spouses, P. Marcus III and Christine Buff of Raleigh, N.C., Lori J. Buff-Belcher and Sammy Belcher of Rocky Gap, Va., and Priscilla A. and Wesley Ashburn of San Antonio, Texas; a sister-in-law, Betty Gaye Wilson of Morganton, N.C.; three sisters, Mildred Mathews of Mission Viejo, Calif., Laura J. Thompson of Pasedena, Calif., and Betty McMillian of Ulmer, S.C.; and seven grandchildren and two stepgrandchildren.

The family will receive friends Friday, May 30, from 6 to 8 p.m. at the Rocky Gap United Methodist Church.

Mildred Pauline Arnold

Mildred Pauline Arnold, of the Fort Chiswell community in Max Meadows, Va., died Monday, June 16, 2003, at Asbury Place in Wytheville, Va.

Funeral services will be held Thursday, June 19, at 11 a.m. in the Grubb Funeral Home Chapel, Wytheville, Va., with the Rev. James Black and the Rev. Don Crockett officiating. Interment will be in West End cemetery, Wytheville, Va.

She was an elementary school teacher for 37 years, all of which were spent in Wythe County, Va. Her teaching career began with the 1943-1944 school term at Glade School in the West Piney community. After teaching at Glade for two years, she transferred to Ivanhoe School and taught there until that school closed at the end of the 1973-1974 school year. She finished her career at Sheffey Elementary School, retiring at the end of the 1979-1980 school year. For most of her career, she taught first grade, teaching her students to read. She was a graduate of Emmanuel College in Franklin Springs, Ga., and completed additional course work at Radford College in Radford, Va. She was a lifetime member of St. Paul Pentecostal Holiness Church, working in the church’s ministry in a number of capacities, including Sunday school teacher and choir member.

She was preceded in death by her parents, Rosa Belle Felts Arnold and Stuart French Arnold.

Survivors include one sister, Marie Arnold of Asbury Place, Wytheville, Va.; four brothers and sisters-in-law, Lee and Margaret Arnold of Max Meadows, Va., Ray and Mildred Arnold of Roanoke, Va., Roy and Irene Arnold of Richmond, Va., and Ralph Duane and Evelyn Arnold of Stuarts Draft, Va.; five nephews, seven nieces, and several great-nephews, great-nieces, great-great-nephews and great-great-nieces.

The family will receive friends Wednesday, June 18, from 6 to 8 p.m. at Grubb Funeral Home.

Shayla Rebecca Lynn McMillan

Shayla Rebecca Lynn McMillan, 4, of Speedwell, Va., died Wednesday, June 18, 2003, at her residence.

Funeral services will be held Friday, June 20, at 2 p.m. at the Gillman Funeral Chapel. Interment will follow in the Speedwell United Methodist Church cemetery.

She is survived by her parents, Daniel and Amy McMillan of Speedwell, Va.; paternal grandparents, Daryl and Kathy McMillan of Crockett, Va.; maternal grandmother, Charmie Hayton of Wytheville, Va.; great-grandmothers, Zola McMillan and Viola Wingate; and several aunts, uncles and cousins.

The family will receive friends Thursday, June 19, from 6 to 8 p.m. at the Gillman Funeral Chapel.

Vivian Palmer Vaughn

Vivian Palmer Vaughn, 99, of Bluefield, W.Va., died Sunday, May 25, 2003, in the Bluefield Regional Medical Center.

Funeral services will be held Monday, June 2, at 1 p.m. at the John Stewart United Methodist Church, Bluefield, W.Va., with Pastor Eugene Nesbitt officiating. Interment will be in the Woodlawn Memorial Park, Bluewell, W.Va.

She was born in Floyd, Va. She was a member of Jones Street Christian Church.

She was preceded in death by her husband, Samuel W. Vaughn; and her parents, Thaddeus and Minnie Palmer.

Survivors include one son and daughter-in-law, Colonel J.T. Jr. and Patty Vaughan of Landover Hills, Md.; three grandchildren, Barbara Swayne and Tina Jones, both of Lanham, Md., and Daphne Vaughan of Galax, Va.; nine great-grandchildren, Frank A. Jones III of Forestville, Md., Tia M. Jones, Lawrence S. Swayne II, both of Lanham, Md., Chawn C. Vaughan, Tameka L. Vaughan, both of Galax, Va., Kristy M. Jones of Lanham, Md., Joseph A. Fletcher, Tynesha P. Fletcher, both of Galax, Va., and Patricia D. Swayne of Lanham, Md.; two great-great-grandchildren, Breonna M. Vaughan, and Luiz A. Vaughan, both of Galax, Va.; and several other close relatives, nieces and nephews.

The family will receive friends Monday, June 2, from noon to 1 p.m. (service time) at the John Stewart United Methodist Church, Bluefield, W.Va.

Ethelyn Osborne Witte

Ethelyn Osborne Witte, 91, of Wytheville, Va., died Friday, May 30, 2003.

A memorial service will be held later.

She was preceded in death by her parents, George and Cora Cypher Osborne.

Survivors include her husband, Walter D. Witte of Wytheville, Va.; a daughter, Caroline Veres of New Jersey; three sons and daughters-in-law, Walter R. and Caroline Witte of Rural Retreat, Va., Richard and Eleanor Witte, and Harry Witte, all of New Jersey.

Nannie Colleen Wright

Nannie Colleen Wright, 75, of Ivanhoe Road, Ivanhoe, Va., died Sunday, June 1, 2003, in Edgemont Center, Wytheville, Va.

Funeral services will be held Wednesday, June 4, at 11 a.m. at the Wytheville Pentecostal Holiness Church with the Rev. Glennard Quesenberry, the Rev. Kenneth Kingrea and the Rev. Gary Cope officiating. Interment will be in the Appalachian Pentecostal Holiness Conference cemetery, Dublin, Va.

She was born June 19, 1927. She grew up in Wythe County and graduated from Max Meadows High School. She was a member of the Wytheville Pentecostal Holiness Church.

She was preceded in death by her parents, John Wesley and Nora Bell Jones Wright; and a grandson, Jeremy Wright.

Survivors include her husband, the Rev. Glenn R. Wright Sr.; two sons and daughters-in-law, Glenn R. "Rudy" Jr. and Donna Wright of Hickory, N.C., and Jerry Randolph "Randy" and Janet Wright of Wytheville, Va.; three daughters and sons-in-law, Dianne and Alfred Stephens of Wytheville, Va., Nancy and Ron Styles of Christiansburg, Va., and Rebecca and Mike Stevenson of Salisbury, N.C.; two sisters, Faye Campbell of Wytheville, Va., and Edna Farmer of Landenberg, Pa.; 10 grandchildren and four great-grandchildren.

The family will receive friends Tuesday, June 3, from 6 to 8 p.m. at the Barnett Funeral Home or at the home of her daughter, Dianne Stephens, at any time.

The family suggests that those who prefer may make memorial donations to George Wythe High School Jeremy Wright Scholarship Foundation, One Maroon Way, Wytheville, VA 24382.

Mattie Evelyn Poston Aker

Mattie Evelyn Poston Aker, 91, of Ashland, Ky., formerly of Wytheville, died Saturday, Oct. 10, 1998, in King's Daughter's Hospital in Ashland, Ky.

Funeral services were held Tuesday, Oct. 13, at 1 p.m. at the Barnett Funeral Home Chapel with Pastor Joe Shumate officiating. Interment followed in the West End cemetery.

She was born in Wythe County, the daughter of the late William E. and Ruby Sanders Poston.

She was preceded in death by her husband, Charles E. Aker Sr.

Survivors include three daughters, Frances Riggs and Mary Ward, both of Ashland, Ky., and Betty Wright of Wytheville; two sons, Charles E. Aker Jr. and George W. Aker, both of Wytheville; 28 grandchildren and several great-grandchildren.

Paul Ray Harbin

Paul Ray Harbin, 51, of Wytheville, Va., died Monday, Oct. 21 2002 in the New River Medical Center, Radford, Va.

Graveside services will be held Thursday, Oct. 24, at 2 p.m. in the West End cemetery in Wytheville, Va.

He was preceded in death by his father, William Harbin.

Survivors include his wife, Carla Elliott Harbin of Wytheville, Va.; daughter, Angie Marie Taylor of Roaring River, N.C.; son, William D. Harbin of Roaring River, N.C.; mother, Eula Conner Harbin of Woodleaf, N.C.; stepdaughter, Christine Leigh-Anne Elliott of Wytheville, Va.; sister and brother-in-law, Christine and Jim Morris of Woodleaf, N.C.; brothers and sister-in-law, Ken Harbin of Lexington, N.C., and Thurman and Sylvia Harbin of North Carolina; three grandchildren and several nieces and nephews.

The family will receive friends Wednesday, Oct. 23, from 6 to 8 p.m. at the Grubb Funeral Home.
