Edith Mae Hoback Kegley, 78, of Wytheville, Va., died Thursday, Oct. 31, 2002.

Funeral services will be held Sunday, Nov. 3, at 2:30 p.m. at the Wytheville Pentecostal Holiness Church with the Rev. Edward Richardson and the Rev. Jerry Stone officiating. Burial will be in Rosewood Memorial Gardens, Rural Retreat, Va.

She was retired from Jafree Shirt Factory and was a member of the Wytheville Pentecostal Holiness Church.

She was preceded in death by her husband, George F. Kegley.

Survivors include a son and daughter-in-law, George Dearl and Diana Goff Kegley of Wytheville, Va.; two grandchildren, Chad Edward Kegley and Bradley Shaun Kegley, both of Wytheville, Va.; special sister-in-law, Elsie K. Cline of Wytheville, Va.; special nephew, Wayne Cline of Wytheville, Va.; and several other sisters-in-law, brothers-in-law, nieces and nephews.

In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to Hospice of Southwest Virginia.

Vona Marie Allen

Vona Marie Allen, 73, of Wytheville, Va., died Saturday, Nov. 9, 2002, in the Wythe County Community Hospital, Wytheville, Va.

A memorial service will be held Wednesday, Nov. 13, at 7 p.m. at the Wytheville Kingdom Hall of Jehovah's Witnesses.

She is survived by her husband, Asa C. Allen of Danville, Va.; two daughters and sons-in-law, Kay and Charles Murphy of Wytheville, Va., and Constance and George McCarthy of Norcross, Ga.; two sons and a daughter-in-law, Michael and Linda Allen of the Ft. Chiswell section of Max Meadows, Va., and Perry C. Allen of Midlothian; and five grandchildren.

Frank W. Stephens

Dr. Frank W. Stephens, P.D., 88, of Wytheville, Va., died Saturday, Nov. 9, 2002.

Funeral service will be held Tuesday, Nov. 12, at 11 a.m. in the Holy Trinity Lutheran Church, Wytheville, Va., with Pastor Steve Ridenhour officiating. Interment will be in St. John’s Lutheran cemetery, Wytheville, Va.

He was the son of the late Stephen Sanders and Mary Prichard Stephens. He was a graduate of Wytheville High School where he spent most of his time on the athletic field. In his junior year, he was voted as quarterback second team for the state. He went to pharmacy school and graduated in 1941. In school, he was president of freshman class, on the honor council and the dean’s list (Kappa Psi). He was a former member of the Rotary Club, Holy Trinity Lutheran Church, past president of the Southwest Virginia Pharmacy Association, and longtime member of the Iron Boots Society. He was an avid fisherman and part-time farmer. He received his pharmacy degree in 1984.

He was preceded in death by his first wife, Dean Johnstone Stephens; daughter, Melva Stephens Potts; and son, Frank Dean Stephens.

Survivors include his wife, Elsie Havens Stephens of Wytheville, Va.; two daughters and sons-in-law, Mariflo Stephens and Fred Heblich of Charlottesville, Va., and Deanna and Robert Taylor of Richmond, Va.; a son and daughter-in-law, Alfred and Dianne Stephens of Wytheville, Va.; a stepson and stepdaughter-in-law, John and Bonnie Brinkley of Seattle, Wash.; a sister, Ethel Stephens Brown of Wytheville, Va.; special friend, Matthew Ridenhour; eight grandchildren, Al Stephens, Sharon Smith, Frank Bruce Stephens, Alisa Plackett, Lee Taylor, Reed Taylor, Jane Heblich and Isabel Heblich; four great-grandchildren, Walker Stephens, Senah Stephens, Hannah Smith and Sydney Stephens; and several nieces and nephews.

The family will receive friends Monday, Nov. 11, from 6 to 8 p.m. at the Grubb Funeral Home, Wytheville, Va.

In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to the Holy Trinity Lutheran Church.

Janice Lynn Coleman Gregory

Janice Lynn Coleman Gregory, 46, of Ivanhoe, Va., died Wednesday, Dec. 4, 2002, in the New River Valley Medical Center in Radford, Va.

Funeral services will be held Sunday, Dec. 8, at 2 p.m. at Reese Funeral Home Chapel with the Rev. Rocky Dalton officiating. Interment will follow in the Odd Fellows cemetery.

She attended church at the Ivanhoe Church of God of Prophecy.

She was preceded in death by a sister, Rhonda Andrews.

Survivors include her husband, Early E. Gregory of the home; two sons and daughters-in-law, Shane J. and Kelli Chandler of Lynn Haven, Fla., and Jason E. and Selinda Gregory of Ivanhoe, Va.; two grandchildren, Jessica Goodson, and Shayne Gail Chandler; parents, Frank and Donna Coleman of Winston-Salem, N.C.; one sister, Carol Denise Brooks of Lewisville, N.C.; a paternal grandmother, Florence Coleman of Winston-Salem, N.C.; several close relatives and friends.

The family will receive friends Saturday, Dec. 7, from 6 to 8 p.m. at the Reese Funeral Home or at the residence at any time.

Kathleen Minnie Sadler Hayton

Kathleen Minnie Sadler Hayton, 85, of Roanoke, Va., formerly of Ceres, Va., died Friday, Nov. 29, 2002, in the Roanoke Memorial Hospital, Roanoke, Va.

Funeral services were held Sunday, Dec. 1, at 8 p.m. at the Highland Funeral Service Bland Chapel, Bland, Va., with the Rev. James Pentecost officiating. A graveside service and interment were held Monday, Dec. 2, at 11 a.m. at the Red Oak cemetery, Ceres, Va.

She was born in Bland County, Va., a daughter of the late Hayes G. and Nellie Hancock Sadler.

She was preceded in death by her husband, Ballard P. Hayton.

Survivors include one daughter and son-in-law, Jean and Kenneth "Jake" Hubble of Roanoke, Va.; one grandson, Michael Hubble of Roanoke, Va.; and several nieces and nephews.

The family suggests that those who prefer may make memorials donations to the charity of their choice.

Valerie DeMaris Leftwich

Valerie DeMaris Leftwich, 47, of Wytheville, Va., formerly of Bastian, Va., died Friday, Nov. 29, 2002, in the Wythe County Community Hospital, Wytheville, Va.

Funeral services will be held Monday, Dec. 2, at 1 p.m. at the Bastian Union Church, Bastian, Va., with the Rev. Ralph Kidd officiating. Interment will be in Rose Hill cemetery, Bastian, Va.

She was born in Bluefield, W.Va., daughter of the late Roy J. and Helen Bruce Leftwich. She was a member of Bastian Union and West End United Methodist churches and was active in the Breast Cancer Support Group of Wytheville, Va.

She is survived by two brothers and sisters-in-law, David and Jeanette Leftwich of Hillsville, Va., and Jay and Joan Leftwich of Bastian, Va.; one niece and spouse, Angel and Pat Stowers of Bastian, Va.; one great-niece, Sydnie Helen Stowers of Bastian, Va.; two nephews, Ryan Leftwich and Jon David Leftwich of Bastian, Va.; several cousins and other relatives.

The family suggests that those who prefer may make memorial donations to the American Cancer Society or the Bland County Rescue Squad.

Sybil Fay Workman Schultz

Sybil Fay Workman Schultz, 98, of Six Mile in Boone County, W.Va., died Tuesday, Nov. 26, 2002, in the Boone Nursing and Rehabilitation Center in Danville, W.Va.

Funeral services were held Saturday, Nov. 30, at 11 a.m. at Six Mile United Methodist Church, Six Mile, W.Va., with the Rev. Roger McCauley and Earl Akers officiating. Burial was in Workman cemetery, Six Mile, W.Va.

Born Oct. 30, 1904, at Six Mile, W.Va., she was the daughter of the late Charley and Arminta Hager Workman. She was one of 10 children. She was active in the Six Mile United Methodist Church and was president of the Women's Society of Christian Service that played a pivotal role in the funding of the church when it was founded. She was an avid reader and student of the Bible. She was an accomplished storyteller and cartoonist.

She was preceded in death by her husbands, William Wetzel Dixon and Erwin W. Schultz.

Survivors include three daughters and sons-in-law, Gloria Jean and Roy Chambers of Six Mile, W.Va., JoAnn Mitchell of Wytheville, Va., and Judy and "Skip" Deegans of Lewisburg, W.Va.; her sister, Lois Parnell of Charleston, W.Va.; and her brother, the Rev. Rex Workman of Six Mile, W.Va.; grandchildren, Roy Emory Chambers Jr. of Six Mile, W.Va., Rebecca Jo Chambers of Six Mile, W.Va., Sandra Mitchell Harrison of Tignall, Ga., George W. Mitchell III of Long Valley, N.J., Rex Laird Mitchell of Madison, W.Va., Joella Mitchell Johnson of Wytheville, Va., Cydney L. Roach of New York City, N.Y., and Jerry Allen Roach Jr. of Boston, Mass.; 12 great-grandchildren and four great-great-grandchildren.

DeNae Jeanette Basinger

DeNae Jeanette Basinger, 44, of Rural Retreat, Va., died Wednesday, Oct. 30, 2002, in the Smyth County Community Hospital, Marion, Va.

Funeral services will be held Saturday, Nov. 2, at 11 a.m. at the Fellowship Baptist Church, Wytheville, Va., with Pastor Donald Drake officiating. Interment will follow in the Basinger Family cemetery.

She was a member of the Fellowship Baptist Church and active in church functions.

She is survived by her husband, Dale Allen Basinger of the home; seven daughters and sons-in-law, Denette and Gary Caviness of Wytheville, Va., Deanna and Jason Holden of Spartenburg, S.C., Dorothy Basinger, Darcy Basinger, Dala Basinger, Dawn Basinger, and Darla Basinger, all of Rural Retreat, Va.; four sons, Doug Basinger of Spartenburg, S.C., Dennis Basinger, Darren Basinger and Dakota Basinger, all of Rural Retreat, Va.; a granddaughter, Melody Holden; her parents, Donald and Doris Smith of Shelby, N.C.; a sister, Debbie Smith of Shelby, N.C.; three brothers, Dan Smith of Minneapolis, Minn., Dave Smith of Washington, D.C., and Evangelist Dwight Smith of Shelby, N.C.; her father-in-law and mother-in-law, Henry and Mavis Basinger of Rural Retreat, Va.; and several nieces, nephews, sisters-in-law, brothers-in-law and close friends.

The family will receive friends Friday, Nov. 1, from 6 to 8 p.m. at the Fellowship Baptist Church or at the residence at any time.

Charles Leonard Bergeron

Charles Leonard "Lenny" Bergeron, 91, of Orlando, Fla., died Sunday, Dec. 1, 2002, in Wytheville, Va.

A wake service will be held Wednesday, Dec. 4, at 6 p.m. at the Dobbs Funeral Home Chapel, Orlando, Fla. Mass of Christian Burial will be held Thursday, Dec. 5, at 10 a.m. at St. Andrew Catholic Church with Father Andrew O'Reilly officiating. Interment will be Friday, Dec. 6, at 11 a.m. at Woodlawn Memory Gardens in St. Petersburg, Fla.

He was born in Lawrence, Mass., raised in Pawtucket, R.I., and was a resident of St. Petersburg, Fla., from 1938 to 1988. He was a member of St. John Catholic Church and served as president of the Men's Club. He was active in Rotary International serving as founding member and president of the West St. Petersburg (Florida) Rotary Club and honored as a Paul Harris Fellow. He moved to Orlando, Fla., in 1988 and lived there to the present where he was a member of St. Andrew Catholic Church and active in the Men's Club and Tuesday night prayer group. He received their "Lenny" award for service in 1995. He was a frequent visitor of Crockett, Va. He was a member of St. John Catholic Church in Marion, Va. He was a residential and commercial roofing contractor in St. Petersburg, Fla., Los Angeles, Calif., and Seattle, Wash.

He was preceded in death by his wife, Mary Bachison Bergeron.

Survivors include two daughters, Mary Ellen Watts of Crockett, Va., and Susanna B. Johnson of Orlando, Fla.; and a grandson, Stephen L. Johnson of Orlando, Fla.

The family will receive friends Wednesday, Dec. 4, from 5 to 6 p.m. (service time) at the Dobbs Funeral Home, Orlando, Fla.

In lieu of flowers the family suggests that donations be made to St. Andrew School Library, 801 Hastings St., Orlando, FL 32808.

Richard Eugene Dooley

Richard Eugene Dooley, 46, of Speedwell, Va., died Tuesday, Dec. 3, 2002, in the Wythe County Community Hospital, Wytheville, Va.

A memorial service will be held Friday, Dec. 6, at 6 p.m. at the Speedwell Baptist Church.

He was preceded in death by his mother, Rosie Dooley; and a sister, Deborah Ann Dooley.

Survivors include his wife, Bobbie F. Dooley of Speedwell, Va.; a daughter and son-in-law, Samantha and Mike Copeland of Speedwell, Va.; a son and daughter-in-law, Shawn and Virginia Dooley of Speedwell, Va.; his father, John I. Dooley of Speedwell, Va.; a sister, Pauline Garland of Wytheville, Va.; three grandchildren and one step-grandchild.

Herman Charles Hanshew

Herman Charles Hanshew, 66, of North Las Vegas, Nev., died Tuesday, Nov. 5, 2002, in Las Vegas, Nev.

Funeral services were held in Las Vegas, Nev. Burial was in Southern Nevada Veterans Memorial cemetery, Boulder City, Nev.

He was born Nov. 9, 1935, in Virginia, the son of Nellie Hubble Hanshew and the late Herman V. Hanshew. He was a 26-year resident of Las Vegas, Nev., and was a retired U.S. Army veteran.

He is survived his wife, Sharon Hanshew; six daughters, Debra Patrick, Katrina Turner, Bobby Jo LeCates and Valerie Winterton, all of Las Vegas, Nev., Cheryl Davis and Christina Hanshew, both of Colorado; four sons, Kenneth Hanshew, Kevin Hanshew, Harold Hanshew and Keith Hanshew, all of Las Vegas, Nev.; his mother, Nellie Hanshew of Nebo, Va.; one sister, Margaret Moseley of Thomaston, Ga.; 29 grandchildren and two great-grandchildren.

Nannie Emma Simmerman Henderlite

Nannie Emma Simmerman Henderlite, 90, of Dublin, Va., died Monday, Nov. 11, 2002, at the Highland Rehab Center, Dublin, Va.

Funeral services will be held Thursday, Nov. 14, at 2 p.m. at the Dublin United Methodist Church with the Rev. Mike Travis and the Rev. Bill Perkins officiating. Interment will be in Highland Memory Gardens, Dublin, Va.

Born Dec. 21, 1911, in Smyth County, Va., she became a member of Dublin United Methodist Church on March 20, 1949. She taught Sunday school for over 50 years and continued to teach the fourth and fifth graders until her health would not permit. She served with her husband as UMY counselors for more than 25 years. She was the chairman of the Altar Guild for over 30 years. She was a lifetime member of the United Methodist Women. In the 1950s and 1960s, she was a member of the Wesleyan Service Guild and served as president of this group. She was a member of the Seeker's Circle. For over 50 years, she sang soprano in the adult choir. She was the founder of the Honeysuckle Garden Club, a club for the children and youth. She was also president of the Federation of Garden Clubs for many years and was also a certified judge. She and her husband were in charge of the New River Valley Fair Association's Flower Show for many years.

She was preceded in death by her husband of 59 years, Harry Mitchell Henderlite; her parents, James and Emma Simmerman; four brothers, Charlie Simmerman, Joe Simmerman, Oscar Simmerman and Jimmy Simmerman; and three sisters, Anna Simmerman, Carrie Hutton and Mattie Putman.

Survivors includes nephews and spouses, Ernest "Junior" and Mary Lynn Hutton of Dublin, Va., Harry and Karen Simmerman of Smith Mountain Lake, Va., Billy Simmerman of Greensboro, N.C., James Simmerman of Chesapeake, Va., and Trenton Simmerman of Salem, Va.; nieces and a spouse, Lorraine "Penny" and Herbert "Turk" Johnson of Groseclose, Va., Nancy Catron of Baltimore, Md., Agnes Bailey of Wellsboro, Pa., and Mary Stadler of Wellsboro, Pa.; special great-niece and her husband, Lisa H. and Luther Barnette of Dublin, Va.; a special great-nephew and his wife, Ernest "Tad" and Delta Hutton of Dublin, Va.; a great-niece, Becky Kegley of Groseclose, Va.; a great-great-niece, Emma Kegley of Groseclose, Va.; and special friends, Ola Mae Roudebush of Dublin, Va., Ted and Bonnie Albert of Dublin, Va., Hensel and Erma Underwood of Dublin, Va., and Gladys Weaver of Dublin, Va.
