Lottie Brickey Estep

Lottie Brickey Estep, 79, of Route 1, Bastian, died Saturday, Sept. 28, 1996, at her residence.

Funeral services were held Tuesday, Oct. 1, at 11 a.m. at the Bastian Church of God with the Rev. James Witten and Rev. John Smith officiating. Interment followed in the Rose Hill cemetery, Bastian.

She was a daughter of the late James S. and Eliza Brickey.

She was preceded in death by her husband, Robert Arnold Estep; two sisters; two brothers; and a special friend, Sarah Jane Carter.

Survivors include two daughters, Callie Maxine Dye of Bastian, and Betty Aliene Banes of Little Creek; four brothers, Charlie Brickey, Rhea Brickey, Horton "Chig" Brickey, and Alfred Brickey, all of Fort Blackmore; and 11 grandchildren, 15 great-grandchildren, and one great-great-grandson.

The family suggests that those who prefer may make memorial donations to the Rose Hill cemetery Fund, route 1, Bastian, Va. 24314.

The Newberry Funeral Home in Bland was in charge of the arrangements.

Elizabeth McLemore Hurley

Elizabeth "Bessie" McLemore Hurley, 70, of Bland, died Thursday, Sept. 26, 1996, in Columbus, Ohio.

Funeral services were held Monday, Sept. 30, at 11 a.m. at the Newberry Funeral Chapel with the Rev. Joe Taylor officiating. Interment followed in the Morning Star cemetery, Bland.

She was preceded in death by her husband, Charles Edgar Hurley; a daughter, Nancy Hurley; a brother, Billy McLemore; a granddaughter, Elizabeth Louise Hurley; and her parents, Eurate and Edith McLemore.

Survivors include four daughters and sons-in-law, Shirley Tester, Faye Justice, both of Bland, Mary and Harold Estep of Holly, Mich., and Lucy and Eugene Estep of Ashville, Ohio; three sons and daughters-in-law, John and Debbie Hurley of Bland, Chuck and Debbie Hurley of Iaeger, W.Va., and Kenneth and Clara Hurley of Pineville, W.Va.; three sisters, Mildred Chambers of Silver City, Md., Jacqulene Mitchem of Iaeger, W.Va., and Phyllis Skeens of Fenton, Mich.; two brothers, Bob McLemore of Bastian, and Dennis McLemore of Richlands; and 12 grandchildren and 19 great-grandchildren.

The Newberry Funeral Home in Bland was in charge of the arrangements.

Zelma Beatrice Porter

Zelma Beatrice "Ott" Porter, 61, of Route 3, Wytheville, died Tuesday, Oct. 1, 1996, in the Lewis-Gale Hospital in Salem.

Funeral services will be held Thursday, Oct. 3, at 2 p.m. at the Baker's Chapel Pentecostal Holiness Church with the Rev. Earl Hanks officiating. Interment will follow in the Mt. Zion cemetery.

She was born in Wythe County, a daughter of the late Lonnie Ewing and Mabel Virginia Aker Porter. She was a member of the Baker's Chapel Pentecostal Holiness Church where she served with the Women's Ministries.

She was preceded in death by two brothers, Samuel Ewing Porter and James E. "Pete" Porter.

Survivors include four sisters and brothers-in-law, Pauline Williams of Route 1, Max Meadows, Mildred and Robert Mabe of Ivanhoe, Peggy and Edward Stone of Chroudrant, La., and Joyce and Charles Dickson of Route 1, Fries; three brothers and five sisters-in-law, Ray C. and Claudine Porter of Route 1, Max Meadows, William L. and Alma Porter of Route 3, Wytheville, Lonnie W. "John" and Helen Porter of Route 2, Max Meadows, Mollie B. Porter of Roanoke, and Beatrice Fisher Porter of Wytheville; and several nieces and nephews.

The family will receive friends Wednesday, Oct. 2, from 7 to 9 p.m. at Baker's Chapel Pentecostal Holiness Church.

Boyd Douglas Sult

Boyd Douglas "Doug" Sult, 74, died Saturday, Sept. 28, 1996, in the Evansham Manor Nursing Home.

Funeral services were held Tuesday, Oct. 1, at 2 p.m. at the Gillman Funeral Chapel, conducted by Rev. Robert Layell. Interment followed in the West End cemetery.

He was a prominent Wythe County farmer and automobile dealer. He served on the board of directors of Premier Bank and was a former deacon of Sharon Baptist Church.

He was preceded in death by a daughter, Judy Gail Sult.

Survivors include his wife, Virginia J. Sult of Wytheville; a daughter and son-in-law, Nancy and Richard Skeens of Wytheville; a son, Boyd D. Sult Jr. of Wytheville; a brother and half-brother, Straley Sult of Wytheville, and J.W. Hall of Colorado; a sister and half-sister, Mary S. Cornett of Rural Retreat, and Betty Jane Hall of Wytheville; and four grandchildren and one great-grandchild.

Gillman Funeral Chapel in Wytheville was in charge of the arrangements.

Michael B. Fischer

Michael B. Fischer, 72, of Ft. Myers, Fla., died Wednesday, Aug. 19, 1998, at the Hospice House.

Funeral services were held Saturday, Aug. 22, at 2 p.m. at the Ft. Myers Memorial Gardens Funeral Home. Interment was in the Ft. Myers Memorial Gardens cemetery.

He was born in Clifton Forge, and came to Ft. Myers in 1956. He was a member of the Palm City Kiwanis Club and the McGregor Baptist Church.

He was preceded in death by his parents, Mr. and Mrs. Otto Fischer; one son, David; three sisters; and his father- and mother-in-law, Mr. and Mrs. Virgil Sharitz..

Survivors include his wife of 44 years, Virgilene S. Fischer; one daughter and son-in-law, Charlotte and Jim Atwood of Old Hickory, Tenn.; two sons and daughter-in-law, Michael B. Jr. and Lily Eschert, and Allan Eschert, all of Ft. Myers, Fla.; two brothers, Robert Fischer, and Llewellyn Fischer, both of Virginia; three sisters, Gloria Lewis, Alice Robinson, and Shirley Pleasants, all of Virginia; two grandchildren, David Atwood, and Melody Lynn Eschert; one great-grandson, Aaron Eschert; and many nieces, nephews, other relatives and friends.

Memorials may be made to the Good News Baptist Church, 1650 Oak Dr., Ft. Myers, FL 33907, or the McGregor Baptist Church, 3750 Colonial Blvd., Ft. Myers, FL 33912.

Addie R. Lawson

Addie R. Lawson, 85, of Route 3, Max Meadows, Fox Mountain community, died Saturday, Aug. 22, 1998, in the Wythe County Community Hospital.

Funeral services were held Monday, Aug. 24, at 2 p.m. at the Barnett Funeral Chapel with the Rev. Johnny Howlett and the Rev. Randy Morris officiating. Interment followed in the Oglesby cemetery.

She was born in Pulaski County, a daughter of the late John Calhoun and Maudie Sutphin Reynolds.

She was preceded in death by her husband, Robert Samuel "Rex" Lawson; a sister, Elizabeth R. Burcham; and a brother, Earl Reynolds.

Survivors include three daughters and sons-in-law, Roberta Virginia Lawson, Barbara L. and Harley Brown, all of Max Meadows, and Kathy and Louis Maraccini of Miami, Fla.; four sisters and one brother-in-law, Margaret R. Duncan, Flora R. Howlett, Dolly and Roy Lawson, all of Pulaski, and Cleo R. Friend of Draper; one brother, Pierce Reynolds of Salem; one grandson, Scott Lilly of Wytheville; and several nieces and nephews.

The family suggests that those who prefer may make contributions to the Grahams Forge United Methodist Church Building Fund.

J.D. McFarland

J.D. McFarland, 35, of Atkins, died Friday, Aug. 21, 1998, in the Smyth County Community Hospital in Marion.

Funeral services were held Tuesday, Aug. 25, at 11 a.m. at the Lindsey Funeral Home Chapel with the Rev. Mike Sage and the Rev. Jimmy Shupe officiating. Interment followed in the Kimberlin Lutheran Church cemetery in Rural Retreat.

He was an employee of Midway Construction.

He was preceded in death by his parents, Elmer Robert and Ella Pauline Combs McFarland.

Survivors include his wife, Joan McFarland; one daughter, Jamie Jo Pickle of Chilhowie; three stepchildren, Beverly Billings, Adam Billings and Pamela Billings, all of Marion; three sisters, Susan McAllister of Covington, Judy Testerman of Chilhowie, and Jennifer McFarland of Marion; and one brother, Jamie McFarland of Marion.

Lindsey Funeral Home in Rural Retreat was in charge of the arrangements.

Kathleen Gray Meek

Kathleen Gray "Kathy" Meek, 69, of Chester, S.C., died Tuesday, Aug. 25, 1998, at her home.

Memorial services will be held Thursday, Aug. 27, at 2 p.m. at the Bethel United Methodist Church, Chester, S.C., with the Rev. Will Brown officiating and the Rev. F. Donald Beaty assisting.

Born Oct. 13, 1928, in Wytheville, she was a daughter of the late Charles Nicholas Gray and the late Nora Rachel Blevins Gray. She was a retired secretary, having been employed with the Chester office of the South Carolina Employment Security Commission. She was a member of the Bethel United Methodist Church, Chester, S.C.

She is survived by her husband, Maxie William "Max" Meek; a son, William G. Meek of Monroe, N.C.; a daughter, Gail M. Meek of Charlotte, N.C.; a brother, Malcolm H. Gray of Pulaski; two sisters, Ethel J. Crockett of Rural Retreat, and Virginia E. Lindamood of Brook Park, Ohio; and two grandchildren, John N. Meek, and Erin M. Meek, both of Monroe, N.C.

Memorials may be made to the Bethel United Methodist Church, 101 York Street, Chester, SC 29706, or to Hospice of York County, 325 S. Oakland Ave., Rock Hill, SC 29730.

Louise P. Parker

Louise P. Parker, 85, of West Columbia, S.C., died Friday, Aug. 21, 1998.

A graveside service was held Monday, Aug. 24, at 2 p.m. at the Mountain View cemetery in Rural Retreat with Pastor Larry M. Bollinger officiating.

She was born in Rural Retreat, a daughter of the late Stafford M. and Erlmah Huffard Parker and was the widow of James A. Parker. She was a member of St. Andrews Episcopal Church and the DAR in Greensboro, N.C. She was an educator who retired after 30 years in public education.

She was preceded in death by a son, James S. Parker; a granddaughter, Pamela Wallace; and a great-grandson, Parker Brewer.

Survivors include a daughter, Nancy Peele of Lexington, S.C.; a sister, Dorothy Correll of Raleigh, N.C.; five grandchildren, Susan Brewer, Katherine Cox, Patricia Stone, Beth Parker, and Christy Parker; and two great-grandchildren, Jessica Wallace and Marc Cox.

The family suggests that those who prefer, may make memorials to the American Heart Association.

John Wayne Sexton

John Wayne Sexton, 32, died Sunday, Aug. 23, 1998, in the Wythe County Community Hospital.

Funeral services will be held Wednesday, Aug. 26, at 10 a.m. at the Gillman Funeral Chapel. Interment will follow in the Evergreen Church cemetery.

He was a member of the Wytheville Golf Club and the Wytheville Moose Lodge.

He is survived by his parents, John and Betty Sexton of Wytheville; two brothers and sisters-in-law, Donnie and Shari Sexton of Salisbury, N.C., and James and Rebecca Sexton of Speedwell; and a special niece and nephew, Ashleigh Sexton and Michael Sexton.

C. Merrill Woodson

The Rev. C. Merrill Woodson, 65, of Bluefield, W.Va., died Friday, Aug. 21, 1998.

Funeral services were held Monday, Aug. 24, at 11 a.m. at Dudley Funeral Home, Bluefield, with the Rev. Rolen Bailey and the Rev. Mike Baker officiating.. Burial followed at 3 p.m. at the Greenfield Baptist Church in Meadowview with the Rev. Jim Cumbow officiating.

Born to Wallace and Margie Woodson on Sept. 16, 1932, in Farmville, he entered the gospel ministry in 1956 and ventured to churches and mission points in Massachusetts, Iowa, and extensively throughout Virginia. He completed his education from the Lancaster College of Bible and Theological Seminary in Wake Forest, N.C., in 1967. While most of Woodson's career was spent in Virginia, he did serve stints with Home and Rescue Missions in Boston, Mass., and later served two years with the Home Mission Board of the Southern Baptist Convention in Iowa.

Churches which he pastored in Virginia include Midway Baptist in Amherst; Liberty Baptist and Slate Hill in Charlottesville; Fluvanna Baptist in Scottsville; Mentow Baptist in Huddleston; Riverside Baptist in Chilhowie; Greenfield Baptist in Meadowview; Reedy Spring Baptist in Spout Spring; and Austinville Baptist in Austinville. Upon his retirement in 1997, he had been serving as interim pastor at Northfork Baptist Church in Northfork, W.Va. He was a member of Bluefield Community Church in Bluefield at the time of his death.

He is survived by his wife of 45 years, Ramona Ray Woodson; four children and their spouses, Buddy and Lois Woodson of Scottsville, Bruce and Jewel Woodson of Bluefield, Brian Woodson of Johnson City, Tenn. and Christy Woodson of Clinton, Tenn.; four grandchildren, April Woodson and Dale Woodson, both of Scottsville, Lauren Woodson and Ryan Woodson, both of Bluefield, W.Va.; his mother, Margie Manis; two brothers, Robert Woodson and Garland Woodson; and three sisters, Flora Bolt, Jean Thompson and Katherine Woodson.

Memorial contributions may be made to the Bluefield Community Church, P.O. Box 330, Bluefield, WV 24701.

Helen Mozelle Clemons Arnold, 65, of Route 1, Max Meadows, died Thursday, July 30, 1998, in the Wythe County Community Hospital,

Funeral services will be held Saturday, Aug. 1, at 2 p.m. at the Reese Funeral Home Chapel in Austinville with the Rev. Don Crockett officiating. Interment will follow in the Mt. Zion cemetery.

She was born in Wythe County, a daughter of the late James Prater and Ethel Mae Davis Clemons.

She was preceded in death by her husband, Benny Bernard Arnold; and a brother, Tommy Clemons.

Survivors include a daughter, Joyce Ann Arnold Stroupe of Austinville; two sons and daughter-in-law, Ray M. Arnold of Austinville, and Perry Lee and Lisa Arnold of Lindside, W.Va.; two grandchildren, Brandon Lee Arnold and Perry Chad Arnold; six sisters and brothers-in-law, Frances and Joe Davis of Route 1, Max Meadows, Louise Collins and Patty Lineberry, both of Wytheville, Peggy Martin of Martinsville, Betty and David Mabe of Bassett, and Patsy Clemons of Wytheville; and a brother and sister-in-law, Clarence and Doris Clemons of Route 1, Max Meadows.
