Bonnie Bowers Sledd

Bonnie Bowers Sledd, 81, of Groseclose, died Wednesday, Feb. 18, 1998, in the Smyth County Community Hospital in Marion.

Funeral services will be held Saturday, Feb. 21, at 11 a.m. at the Lindsey Funeral Home Chapel with the Rev. Rance Edwards officiating. Interment will follow in the Fairview United Methodist Church cemetery in Rural Retreat.

She was born in Wythe County, the daughter of the late Millard and Delia Holbrook Bowers. She was a member of the Fulton United Methodist Church.

She was preceded in death by her husband, Kenneth Ferguson Sledd Sr.

Survivors include one son and daughter-in-law, Kenneth F. "Pete" Jr. and Margaret Sledd; two grandsons and granddaughter-in-law, Kenneth F. III and Jackie Sledd, and Tracy C. Sledd, all of Marion; and one great-grandson, Shane Sledd of Marion.

The family requests that those who prefer may make memorials to the Fulton United Methodist Church.

Lindsey Funeral Home in Rural Retreat is in charge of the arrangements.

Girlie Viars Gravley

Girlie Viars Gravley, 85, of Max Meadows, died Friday, Feb. 20, 1998, in the Roanoke Community Hospital.

Funeral services were held Sunday, Feb. 22, at 2 p.m. at the Barnett Funeral Home Chapel in Wytheville with the Rev. Aileen Aker officiating. Interment followed in the Rosewood Memory Gardens in Rural Retreat.

She was born in Franklin County, a daughter of the late Charlie and Mary Jane Thompson Viars and was a member of the Gravley Memorial Pentecostal Holiness Church.

She was preceded in death by her husband, Jesse James Gravley; a son, J.P. Gravley; a sister, Lillian Linkous; and two brothers, Ernest Viars, and Garland Viars.

Survivors include two daughters and sons-in-law, Georgia and W.R. Fariss of Route 3, Max Meadows, and Judy and Burley Dalton of Draper; a son and daughter-in-law, Clyde W. and Shelva Gravely of Route 3, Max Meadows; two sisters, Macie Hudson of Coco, Fla., and Virgie Gravley of Austinville; and six grandchildren, 13 great-grandchildren, three great-great-grandchildren, and several nieces and nephews.

Barnett Funeral Home in Wytheville is in charge of the arrangements.

Tom Hayton

Tom Hayton, 84, of Route 4, Wytheville, died Monday, Feb. 23, 1998, in the Birdmont Health Care Center.

Funeral services will be held Wednesday, Feb. 25, at 2 p.m. in the Grubb Funeral Home Chapel conducted by Pastor Steve Ridenhour. Interment in the West End cemetery.

He was retired from Pendleton Construction Company and was a U.S. Army veteran of World War II.

He is survived one daughter, Cecil H. Mabe of Wytheville; special friends, William and Betty Compton of Wytheville; four grandchildren, Brenda McGuire of Wytheville, Kenneth Jackson of Rural Retreat, Donna Jackson of Pulaski, and Timothy Mabe of Max Meadows; and eight great-grandchildren.

The Grubb Funeral Home in Wytheville is in charge of the arrangements.

Thelma Mae Lawson Primm

Thelma Mae Lawson Primm, 76, of Route 2, Max Meadows, died Saturday, Feb. 21, 1998.

Funeral services were held Tuesday, Feb. 24, at 1 p.m. at the Reese Funeral Home Chapel with the Rev. Frazier officiating. Interment followed in the Primm Family cemetery.

She was born in Sylvatus, a daughter of the late John Wesley Lawson and Lula Mae Phillips Lawson.

She was preceded in death by her husband, Mason Hurley Primm.

Survivors include a daughter and son-in-law, Wanda and Carroll Dean Bowman of Route 2, Hillsville; three sons and daughters-in-law, Hurley J. "Rex" and Bonnie Primm of Petersburg, Curtis E. and Linda Primm of Roanoke, and Larry M. and Robbin Primm of Radford; 11 grandchildren, eight great-grandchildren; one sister, Hazel Pearcy of Chickasha, Okla.; two brothers, James W. Lawson of Woodlawn, and Harold L. Lawson of Barren Springs; and several nieces and nephews.

Reese Funeral Home in Austinville was in charge of the arrangements.

Lillian Lambert Tate

Lillian Lambert Tate, 74, of Wytheville, formerly of Max Meadows, died Monday, Feb. 23, 1998, in the Birdmont Health Care Center.

Funeral services will be Thursday, Feb. 26, at 2 p.m. in the Grubb Funeral Home Chapel, conducted by Rev. Curtis Stoots. Interment will be in the Bethel cemetery.

She was the widow of Issac Newton Tate.

She is survived by one daughter and son-in-law, Janelle and Thomas Peak of Max Meadows; two sons and daughters-in-law, Herman and Susan Tate of Max Meadows, and Dale and Wanda Tate of Wytheville; three stepdaughters, Stella Clemons, Minnie Roberts, and Rosetta Knight, all of Collinsville; one brother-in-law, Clair Lambert of Bland; and six grandchildren and four great-grandchildren.

The family will receive friends Thursday, Feb. 26, from noon until service time at the Grubb Funeral Home or at the residence of her children at anytime.

Georgia Lee Wright

Georgia Lee Wright, 63, of the Hollybrook Community, Bland, died Monday, Feb. 23, 1998, in Radford Community Hospital.

Funeral services will be held Wednesday, Feb. 25, at 2 p.m. at the Seed of Life Ministries Church, Crandon, with the Rev. Junior Jackson and the Rev. Tom Kirk officiating. Burial will be in the Shiloh cemetery, Hollybrook.

She was born July 23, 1934, at Hollybrook, a daughter of the late Samuel Roberson and Elva Faye Ramsey Francis. She belonged to the Methodist Church and the Seed of Life Ministries Church.

She is survived by her husband, Charles Russell Wright of Bland; two sons and daughter-in-law, Robbie and Lisa Wright of Bland; William R. Wright of Bland; three sisters, Mrs. Earl C. (Janet) Faulkner of Bland, Mrs. Homer Lee (Nancy) Wright of Bland, and Mrs. Larry (Judy) Wood of Wytheville; and three grandchildren, Angelia, Alex and Alexis.

Doris Monahan Stoneman

Doris Monahan Stoneman, 54, of Ivanhoe, died Monday, Feb. 23, 1998, at her residence.

Funeral services will be held Thursday, Feb. 26, at 11 a.m. at the Fairview United Methodist Church with the Rev. Taz Reid and the Rev. Larry Linkous officiating. Interment will follow in the Odd Fellows cemetery.

The family will receive friends Wednesday, Feb. 25, from 7 to 9 p.m. at the Fairview United Methodist Church.

Luther Bennett Arnold

Luther Bennett Arnold, 59, of Wytheville, died Wednesday, Feb. 25, 1998, at his residence.

Funeral services will be held Sunday, March 1, at 2 p.m. at the Liberty Hill Pentecostal Holiness Church. Interment will follow in the Mt. Zion United Methodist Church cemetery.

He was preceded in death by his parents, Chester and Gracie Dunford Arnold; a granddaughter, Brandi Burnett; six half-brothers; and a son-in-law, Danny Arnold.

Survivors include his wife, Agnes Fulton Arnold of Wytheville; two daughters and a son-in-law, Ginger and Bill Crider of Max Meadows, and Penny Arnold of Route 3, Wytheville; three sisters, Mrs. Munsy (Olis) Akers and Louise Sayers, both of Route 3, Wytheville, and Mrs. Clarence (Gladys) Ring of Wytheville; one brother, Clayton Russell Arnold of Route 3, Wytheville; two grandchildren, Crystal Arnold and Heather Bennett; and three special friends, Peggy Shockley, Elizabeth Rodgers and Rita Mahone.

The family will receive friends Saturday, Feb. 28, from 7 to 9 p.m. at the Liberty Hill Pentecostal Holiness Church, or at his residence in Longview Village Circle, Wytheville, or at the residence of his daughter, Penny Arnold of Route 3, Wytheville, at anytime.

Violet Marie Shupe Bartley

Violet Marie Shupe Bartley, 82, of Plano, Texas, formerly of Rural Retreat, died Wednesday, Feb. 25, 1998, at her home.

Funeral services will be held Saturday, Feb. 28, at 10 a.m. at the First United Methodist Church in Plano, Texas. A graveside service will be held Monday, March 2, at 3 p.m. at the Mountain View cemetery.

She was a member of the First United Methodist Church in Plano, Texas, and a member of the St. Johns United Methodist Church in Norfolk.

She was preceded in death by her husband, Robert William Bartley; her parents, Elbert and Gay Elizabeth Shupe; and five brothers.

Survivors include a daughter and son-in-law, Elizabeth Bartley and Hector Restrepo of Plano, Texas; a son, Robert John Bartley of Norfolk; two grandsons, Mathew John Restrepo and Andrew Roberto Restrepo; three sisters, Ruth Kegley of Bristol, Ella Hilton of Harrisonburg, and Gladys Kegley of Wytheville; and numerous nieces and nephews.

Visitation will be Monday, March 2, from 2 p.m. until service time at the Lindsey Funeral Home in Rural Retreat.

Ella Sue Umberger Hagy

Ella Sue Umberger Hagy, 51, of Wytheville, died Thursday, Feb. 26, 1998, in the Winston-Salem, N.C. Baptist Hospital.

Funeral services will be held Saturday, Feb. 28, at 2 p.m. in the Grubb Funeral Home Chapel conducted by the Rev. Robert Smith and the Rev. Bruce Hagy. Interment will be in the West End cemetery.

She was preceded in death by her father, Robert B. "Barney" Umberger; and a brother, David Willard Umberger.

Survivors include her husband, Dewey M "Duke" Hagy of Wytheville; two daughters and sons-in-law, Melissa and John Eastwood, and Kathy and Lee Scott, all of Wytheville; her mother, Lena Irvin Umberger of Wytheville; three grandchildren, Stacy Ann Eastwood, Joshua Aaron Scott, and Christopher Dewey Scott, all of Wytheville; sisters-in-law and spouses, Joanne Vandyke of Wytheville, Sue and Stan Frances of Gray, Tenn., Wanda and Jimmy Tibbs, Debbie and Danny Rosenbaum, and Connie and Rudy Neese, all of Wytheville; brothers-in-law and spouses, Johnny and Toppy Vandyke of Colonial Heights, James D. Hagy of Roanoke, the Rev. Bruce and Barbara Hagy of Ridgeway, and Chimer D. Hagy of Wytheville; and several aunts and uncles, a host of special cousins, nieces and nephews.

Those who wish to do so may make memorials in her memory to the Bowman Gray Cancer Research Center, c/o North Carolina Baptist Hospital, Winston-Salem, N.C., or to the Wytheville Volunteer Fire Department.

Arthur Smith Horney

Arthur Smith Horney, 81, of Speedwell, died Wednesday, Feb. 25, 1998.

Funeral services will be held Saturday, Feb. 28, at 1 p.m. at the Barnett Funeral Home Chapel with the Rev. Bill Perkins officiating. Interment will follow in the Rosewood Memorial Gardens, Rural Retreat.

He was a retired postmaster, a beef cattle farmer, a member of the Speedwell United Methodist Church, a former member of the Speedwell Volunteer Fire Department and a charter member of the Speedwell Ruritan Club.

He was preceded in death by a son, Gene Horney Sr., formerly of Speedwell.

Survivors include his wife, Verna Daniels Horney of the home; a son and daughter-in-law, Hayden and Kay Horney of Speedwell; a daughter and son-in-law, Carolyn and Jimmy Wohlford of Speedwell; a daughter-in-law, Mabel Y. Cline of Salem; two brothers, Tom Horney of the home, and H.M. Horney Jr. of Newland, N.C.; and seven grandchildren and numerous great-grandchildren.

The family suggests that those who prefer may memorials to the Speedwell Rescue Squad, Speedwell, VA 24374.

Henry Fred Hubble

Henry Fred Hubble, 71, of Route 3, Falls Mills, died Wednesday, Feb. 25, 1998, at Bluefield Regional Medical Center in Bluefield, W.Va.

Funeral services will be held Saturday, Feb. 28, at 2 p.m. at the Cravens-Shires Funeral Home Chapel in Bluewell, W.Va. with the Rev. Barry Franklin and the Rev. Ted Anders officiating. Burial will follow in Grandview Memory Gardens on the Bluefield-Tazewell Road in Bluefield. The Sandy River District American Legion Post No. 175 and the Mercer County Veterans Council will conduct military graveside rites.

Born June 7, 1926, in Nebo, he was a son of the late Garland Leroy and Jennie Kinder Hubble. He had been a resident of Falls Mills for 42 years and was retired from EIMCO Mine Machinery Shop where he worked for 27 years as a maintenance supervisor. He also was formerly employed as an auto-mechanic and was a veteran of World War II serving with Battery A. 579th Anti-aircraft Artillery in the Pacific Area with the U.S. Army. He was of the Protestant faith.

He was preceded in death by a grandson, Roby Frederick Craddock.

Survivors include his wife of 50 years, Santa Fe Woodward Hubble of Falls Mills; a son and a daughter-in-law, DeWayne and Kathy Hubble of Ceres; four daughters and sons-in-law, Judy and Allen F. Wagner of Vinton, Teddi R. and Robert D. Craddock of Hewett, W.Va., Freda and Ronald Linkous of Bluefield, and Theresa E. and Alford Wright of Falls Mills; three brothers, James R. Hubble of Ceres, Roscoe Hubble of Abingdon and G.L. Hubble Jr. of Marion; a sister, Ada Berry of Marion; nine grandchildren, Franklin Wagner II of Christiansburg, Michelle R. Wagner of Blacksburg, R. Bradley Craddock of Danville, W.Va., Clinton D. Craddock and Travis R. Craddock, both of Hewett, W.Va., Heath J. Wright and Heather E. Wright, both of Falls Mills, Clay Henry Hubble and Nathan R. Hubble, both of Ceres; and a great-granddaughter, Kaila C. Craddock of Hewett, W.Va.
