Nellie Victoria Lovell Coble, 83, of Wytheville, died Sunday, May 9, 1999, in the Wythe County Community Hospital.

Funeral services will be held Wednesday, May 12, at 1 p.m. at the Barnett Funeral Home Chapel with the Rev. Mike Ingo officiating. Interment will follow in the Foster Falls cemetery.

She was born in Foster Falls, a daughter of the late William and Elva Young Lovell. She was a member of Foster Falls United Methodist Church.

She was preceded in death by her husband, Alonzo Coble; two sons, Carlton "Pat" Coble and William "Buddy" Coble; a daughter, Bonnie Frazier; two grandsons, Ronnie Coble and James Coble; and a brother, Nathan "Tom" Lovell.

Survivors include three daughters and sons-in-law, Betty Jennings of Mt. Victory, Md., Joyce and Ted Boyer of Waldorf, Md., and Sandra and Roger Hancock of Pulaski; four sons and daughters-in-law, Malcolm and Trang Coble of Clinton, Md., Fred and Margaret Coble of Max Meadows, Alonzo Jr. and Iris Coble of Hillsville, Joseph and Carrie Coble of Wytheville, and Marie Coble of Austinville; six sisters, Hazel Mabry of Foster Falls, Esther Mabry of Barren Springs, Sally Gravley of Foster Falls, Helen Mahone of Barren Springs, Dorothy Poston of Roanoke, and Martha Crockett of Foster Falls; one brother, William Oakley Lovell of Foster Falls; one sister-in-law, Matt Lovell of Poplar Camp; 27 grandchildren and 33 great-grandchildren.

Martha Darlene Hardy

Martha Darlene Hardy, 59, of Pulaski, died Monday, May 10, 1999, in the Pulaski Health Care Center.

Graveside service and interment will be held Wednesday, May 12, at 3 p.m. at the Bethany cemetery with the Rev. Wilfred L. Overton officiating.

She was born in Foster Falls, a daughter of the late Oscar and Rhoda Coble Stone.

She was preceded in death by her husband, William I. Hardy Sr.; and a son, David Lee Hardy.

Survivors include three daughters and sons-in-law, Debra and Butch Blankenship of Route 4, Hillsville, Delores Ann Cook of Christiansburg, and Judy and Tim Canaday of Radford; a son and daughter-in-law, William I. Jr. and Jennifer Hardy of Pulaski; four sisters, Ethel Shockley and Margie Snavely, both of Pulaski, Mable Peak and Agnes Hicks, both of Dublin; two brothers, Fred Stone of Dublin and Junior Stone of Austinville; and eight grandchildren.

W.R. Humphreys Jr.

W.R. Humphreys Jr., 73, of Rural Retreat, died Sunday, May 9, 1999, at his residence.

Funeral services were held Tuesday, May 11, at 2 p.m. at the Asbury United Methodist Church with the Rev. Bill Perkins officiating. Interment followed in the church cemetery. Graveside military rites were conducted by Marion V.F.W. Post #4667.

He was born in Max Meadows, a son of the late William Raper Sr. and Dovie Richardson Humphreys. He was a member of the Asbury United Methodist Church in Cedar Springs, a veteran of the U.S. Army serving in World War II, and was retired from the Brunswick Corp. in Marion.

He is survived by his wife of 47 years, Evangeline Groseclose Humphreys of the home; one daughter and son-in-law, Annette and Jim Mabe of Chilhowie; two sons and daughters-in-law, Curtis W. and Nancy Humphreys of Wytheville, and Troy and Amy Humphreys of Rural Retreat; one sister, Betty Jean Humphreys of Wytheville; one brother, Paul L. Humphreys of Rural Retreat; one granddaughter, Stacey Burton; two stepgranddaughters, Casey Mabe and Jenny Mabe; and several nieces and nephews.

The family suggests that those who prefer may make memorials to the Rural Retreat Emergency Services or to the Asbury United Methodist Church.

A. Willard Lester Jr.

A. Willard Lester Jr., 49, of Wytheville, died Monday, May 10, 1999.

A graveside service and interment will be held Thursday, May 13, at 11 a.m. at the West End cemetery.

He was a graduate of George Wythe High School, Hampden-Sydney College and received his law degree from the College of William and Mary. He was a member of the Virginia State Bar Association and the Wythe County Bar Association. He served as Assistant Commonwealth's Attorney for Wythe County, Commonwealth's Attorney for Bland County and was a partner and legal adviser with GIV until his retirement.

He was preceded in death by his parents, A. Willard Lester Sr. and Elizabeth Carosiello Lester Sult; and a stepfather, J. Earle Johnson.

Survivors include his wife, Deborah Lester; a daughter, Akemi Eisenhardt of Orlando, Fla.; a son, Jay Eisenhardt of Orlando, Fla.; and a stepfather, Charles L. Sult of Roanoke.

There will be no visitation at the funeral home.

The family suggests that those who prefer may make memorial contributions to the Cliff Dicker Scholarship Fund, c/o the Wythe County Sheriff's Office, P.O. Box 819, Wytheville, VA 24382.

Robert Glen Preston Jr.

Robert Glen "R.G." Preston Jr., 81, of Tampa, Fla., formerly of Rocky Gap, died Monday, May 10, 1999, in the Prince William Hospital in Manassas.

Funeral services will be held Thursday, May 13, at 11 a.m. at the Rocky Gap United Methodist Church with the Rev. Don Scott and the Rev. Larry Ramey officiating. Interment will follow in the Roselawn Memorial Gardens in Princeton, W.Va.

He was born in Petersburg, a son of the late Robert Glen Sr. and Opal Nichols Preston. He was a member of the Rocky Gap United Methodist Church and attended the Seminole Heights Methodist Church in Tampa, Fla. He was a member of the Rocky Gap A.F.&A.M. Elbert Muncy Lodge #298, O.E.S. # 154.

He was preceded in death by his wife, Ruby Shrader Preston; two sisters, Mildred Jeter and Glen Preston; and a brother, Billy Preston.

Survivors include two daughters and sons-in-law, Brenda and Bud Lucas of Manassas, and Kaye and Butch Thompson of Rocky Gap; four grandchildren and spouses, Vicki and Dan Gawel of Zephyrhills, Fla., Dennis and Anne Thompson of Landenberg, Pa., Michael Lucas of Kingsland, Ga., and Andi and Jerry Tiller of Rocky Gap; eight great-grandchildren, Robbie, Angela, Nicki, Joey, Katie, Andy, Josh, and Little Ruby; and a sister, Peggy Preston Turner of Bedford.

The family will receive friends Wednesday, May 12, from 6 to 8 p.m. at the Rocky Gap United Methodist Church.

Sylvia B. Smith

Sylvia B. Smith, 86, of Wytheville, died Monday, May 3, 1999, in the Edgemont Center.

Funeral services will be Thursday, May 13, at 2 p.m. at the Gillman Funeral Chapel. Interment will follow in the West End cemetery.

She is survived by three daughters, Geraldine Ratcliffe of Baltimore, Md., Mildred Pulliam of Wytheville, and Ester L. Akers of Wytheville; two sons, Millard Smith of Wytheville and Bobby Smith of Pulaski; two sisters, Carrie Felty of Wytheville and Frances Willis of Woodlawn; 20 grandchildren and 18 great-grandchildren.

The family will receive friends Wednesday, May 12, from 7 to 9 p.m. at the Gillman Funeral Chapel.

Amos Ezra Brown

Amos Ezra Brown, 84, of Gullion Fork Road, Wytheville, died Wednesday, May 5, 1999, in the Wythe County Community Hospital.

Funeral services will be held Saturday, May 8, at 1 p.m. at the Barnett Funeral Home Chapel in Wytheville with the Rev. Abe Handy and the Rev. Carl Pauley officiating. Interment will follow in the Rosewood Memorial Gardens in Rural Retreat.

He was born in Covington, a son of the late Troy W. and Ada Breeden Brown. He attended the Assembly of God Church.

He was preceded in death by a daughter, Barbara Jean Davis; two brothers and one sister.

Survivors include his wife of 68 years, Viola Grimes Brown; three sons and daughter-in-law, Kenneth Brown, Garland Lee "Pete" Brown, both of the home, and Ryland and Dianna Brown of Wytheville; five grandchildren, four sisters-in-law, and two brothers-in-law.

Goldie Geneva Beamer French

Goldie Geneva Beamer French, 93, of Bland, died Tuesday, May 4, 1999, at Princeton Community Hospital.

Funeral services were held Friday, May 7, at 2 p.m. at the A. Vest & Sons Funeral Home Chapel, White Gate, with the Rev. Frank Clifton officiating. Burial was in the Shiloh cemetery, Hollybrook.

She was born Jan. 4, 1906, at Chapel, a daughter of the late Lesley Broley and Alice Pearl Morris Beamer.

She was preceded in death by her husband, Robert Fairfax French; six brothers, Donald Beamer, Bryan Beamer, Benjamin Beamer, Arthur Beamer, Ray Beamer and Earl Beamer; and one sister, Caroline B. French.

Survivors include one daughter and son-in-law, Dollie F. and the Rev. Wayne Monroe of Narrows; one son and daughter-in-law, Robert W. and Mary Ann French of Bland; two sisters, Dorothy B. Wyrick of Botetourt, and Lois B. Horsley of Salem; and five grandchildren, Dawn Davis and her husband, Mike, of North Carolina, Dena Monroe of Bland, Debra Monroe of Narrows, Matthew French of Bland, and Sarah Beth French of Bland.

Robert Jackson Hall

Robert Jackson "Jack" Hall, 55, of Wytheville, died Thursday, May 6, 1999, in the Wythe County Community Hospital.

Funeral services will be held Sunday, May 9, at 2 p.m. in the Shiloh Christian Church with the Rev. James Thorpe officiating. Interment will be in the Shiloh cemetery.

He was a project engineer for the Virginia Department of Transportation with 32 years of service, and had over 30 years service as an official with Virginia High School League. He was the son of the late Robert R. and Lucille Crabtree Hall of North Tazewell.

He is survived by his wife, Sharon S. Hall of Wytheville; two daughters and sons-in-law, Terri and Ranny Grubb of Roanoke, and Vicki and Chuck Dixon of Virginia Beach; two stepdaughters, Alison Spain and Amanda Spain, both of Wytheville; three granddaughters, Taylor Grubb of Roanoke, Lindsey Dixon of Virginia Beach, and Bailey Grubb of Roanoke; a sister, Carol Christian of North Tazewell; a niece, Tammy White of North Tazewell; two nephews, Jeff White of North Tazewell, and Kevin White of Jacksonville, Fla.; and several grandnieces and grandnephews.

The family will receive friends Saturday, May 8, from 7 to 9 p.m. at the Grubb Funeral Home.

Those who wish may make memorials to the American Cancer Society or to the Wythe-Bland Hospice of Southwest Virginia.

Joseph H. Payne

Joseph H. Payne, 85, of Hampton, formerly of Rural Retreat, died Tuesday, May 4, 1999, in the Veterans Administration Medical Center in Hampton.

A graveside service will be held Monday, May 10, at 10 a.m. at the Mt. Zion Community Church cemetery (the Crawfish Valley Community)) in Rural Retreat with the Rev. Michael Hoyle officiating. Graveside military rites will be conducted by Marion V.F.W. Post # 4667.

He was born in Rural Retreat, a son of the late Silas and Fannie Shupe Payne. He was a veteran of the U.S. Army serving in World War II.

He was preceded in death by two brothers, Ellis Payne and Stanley Payne; and one sister, Grace Mazza.

Survivors include several nieces and nephews, George Mazza of Whiting, N.J., Frank Mazza of Clifton, N.J., Nancy Luppino of Potomac, Md., Frances Perry of Parma, Ohio, and Stanley M. Payne of Newark, Del., Jimmy Payne, Bill Payne, Donald Payne, Judy Hall, Ronnie Payne, and Lonnie Payne, all of Bluefield; a sister-in-law, Virginia Payne of Bluefield; and several cousins.

The family will receive friends Sunday, May 9, from 6 to 9 p.m. at the Lindsey Funeral Home.

Mary Cosetta Graham Crigger

Mary Cosetta Graham Crigger, 95, of Roanoke, formerly of Speedwell, died Saturday, May 1, 1999, in the Roanoke Memorial Hospital.

Funeral services were held Tuesday, May 4, at 2 p.m. at the Barnett Funeral Home Chapel with the Rev. Douglas Stuart officiating. Interment followed in the Speedwell United Methodist Church cemetery.

She was born in West Virginia, a daughter of the late George and Cathenie McKinney Graham.

She was preceded in death by her husband, Burton Crigger; a daughter, Helen Crigger; and a son, James C. Crigger.

Survivors include three daughters, Marie Crigger Gipson of Gardendale, Ala., JoAnn Crigger Smelser of Cincinnati, Ohio, and Mary Crigger Cline of Roanoke; one son, Jack B. Crigger of Roanoke; two sisters, Laura Lovell of Sophia, W.Va., and Rosie McKinney of Basin, W.Va.; 14 grandchildren and several great-grandchildren.

Edith Augusta Havens

Edith Augusta Havens, 79, of Bland, died Tuesday, May 4, 1999, in the Pulaski Community Hospital.

Funeral services will be held Thursday, May 6, at 2 p.m. at the Newberry Funeral Home Chapel in Bland with the Rev. Doug Hyndrich officiating. Interment will follow in the Temple Hill cemetery in Bland.

She was born in Bland, a daughter of the late Henry H. and Nannie Jane Pauley Dillow and was a member of the Central United Methodist Church in Bland.

She was preceded in death by her husband, G.C. "Doc" Havens; a daughter, Martha Jean Havens; a brother, H. Gordie Dillow; and three sisters, Hazel Shewey, Ida Havens and Bertha Hylton.

Survivors include a daughter and son-in-law, Myra Jane and Ronnie Hall of Bland; two sons and daughters-in-law, Richard Crockett and Kathy Havens, T. Cicero and Christine N. Havens, all of Bland; five grandchildren, Jason Hall, Richard Gordon Havens, Rachael Suzanne Havens, Cicely M. Havens, all of Bland, and Brian Hall of Blacksburg; a brother-in-law, Claude Shewey; a sister-in-law, Kate Dillow; and numerous nieces and nephews.

The family will receive friends Wednesday, May 6, from 6 to 8 p.m. at the Newberry Funeral Home or at the residence at any time.
