Jean Delp Howe

Jean Delp Howe, 82, of Crockett, died Wednesday, March 17, 1999, in the Wythe County Community Hospital.

Funeral services will be held Saturday, March 20, at 11 a.m. at the Kings Grove United Methodist Church with the Rev. Rance Edwards, the Rev. Michael Hoyle and Pastor Joe Shumate officiating. Interment will follow in the church cemetery. The body will be taken to the church one hour before service time.

She was born in Grayson County, the daughter of the late Peter M. and Gertrude Hurt Delp. She was a member of the Kings Grove United Methodist Church in Crockett.

She was preceded in death by her husband, Cloyd Wilson "Peanut" Howe.

Survivors include one daughter and son-in-law, Donna and Michael Tarter of Crockett; two granddaughters, Jenny Tarter and Tanya Tarter, both of Crockett; one brother, Omer Delp of Castlewood; three sisters-in-law, Frances Delp of Crockett, Wanda Delp of Galax, and Agnes Scott of Cocoa Beach, Fla.; and several nieces and nephews.

Flowers will be appreciated or memorials may be made to the Rural Retreat Emergency Services or to the Kings Grove United Methodist Church.

George Eugene Jackson

George Eugene "Gene" Jackson, 85, of Wytheville, died Thursday, March 18, 1999, in the Wythe County Community Hospital.

A memorial service will be held Sunday, March 21, at 2 p.m. at the Barnett Funeral Home Chapel in Wytheville with Harold Dean Underwood officiating. Interment will follow in the Mt. Pleasant cemetery.

He was born in Grayson County, a son of the late George Richard and Sena Etta Archer Jackson. He was a U.S. Navy veteran of World War II.

He was preceded in death by two brothers, Glen Valley "Val" Jackson and Fredrick "Fred" Archer Jackson.

Survivors include three sons and daughters-in-law, George N. and Peggy Jane Matthews Jackson of Wytheville, Terry W. Sr. and Geraldine Jackson of Mt. Airy, N.C., and Burton E. "Burt" Jackson and Roberta Poole of Christiansburg; seven grandchildren, 13 great-grandchildren; and Opal Marshall.

The family will receive friends Sunday, March 21, from 1 p.m. until service time at Barnett Funeral Home.

In lieu of flowers contributions may be made to the Granite Christian Academy, c/o Fellowship Baptist Church, 1705 Peppers Ferry Road, Wytheville, VA 24382.

Gaberiel Paul Quesenberry

Gaberiel Paul Quesenberry, 88, of Hillsville, died Thursday, March 18, 1999, in the Pulaski Community Hospital.

Funeral services will be held Sunday, March 21, at 2:30 p.m. in the Vaughan-Guynn-McGrady Chapel in Hillsville with the Rev. Michael Collins, the Rev. Raymond White, and the Rev. John Duncan officiating. Burial will follow in the Smith-Lindsey cemetery. Military rites will be conducted at the graveside.

He is survived by his wife, Mary Ellen Bond Quesenberry of Hillsville; three sons and daughters-in-law, Gary Edgar and Mickey Quesenberry, James Preston and Gail Quesenberry, all of Hillsville, and Larry Wayne and Kathy Quesenberry of Barren Springs; two daughters and sons-in-law, Mary Marie and Buford W. Hagee of Pulaski, and Regina Diana and Connie Grimes of Fort Chiswell; four sisters and brothers-in-law, Georgia Smoot of Lexington, Ky., Ruby Wood of Hillsville, Rachel and Richard Slate of Hillsville, and Ruth and Roy Hyatt of Philadelphia, Pa.; one brother, Abraham Quesenberry of Philadelphia, Pa.; nine grandchildren and 10 great-grandchildren.

The family will receive friends Saturday, March 20, from 6 to 8 p.m. at the Vaughan-Guynn-McGrady Chapel, Hillsville.

Marie Ann Sabatino

Marie Ann Sabatino, 86, of Wytheville, died Thursday, March 18, 1999, at the home of her daughter.

Funeral services will be held at the Ingersoll-Greenwood Funeral Home in North Wildwood, N.J. with Father Michael Field officiating. Interment will be in the St. Mary's cemetery, Wildwood, N.J.

She was the widow of Vincenzo Sabatino.

She is survived by one daughter and son-in-law, Pamela and Dr. James J. McConnell of Wytheville; one son and daughter-in-law, James and Sally Sabatino or Ocean City, N.J.; three sisters and two brothers-in-law, Delia and William Whitley of Suffolk, Fem Ravcci of Wildwood, N.J., and Vee and John Stanbach of Wildwood, N.J.; one sister-in-law, Martha Cappachione of Edgewater, Fla.; two godchildren, Debbie Hoelsworth of Pennsylvania, and Joseph Cappachione of California; one granddaughter, Lorie Sabatino of New Jersey; one great-granddaughter, Ashley Sabatino of New Jersey; one step-granddaughter, Connie Osskichak of New Jersey; and several nieces and nephews.

Lettie Mable Stoots

Lettie Mable Stoots, 64, of Route 3, Max Meadows, died Wednesday, March 17, 1999, at her residence.

Funeral services will be held Saturday, March 20, at 2 p.m. at the Barnett Funeral Home Chapel in Wytheville with the Rev. Randy Morris and the Rev. Earnest Chinault officiating. Interment will follow in the Bethany cemetery.

She was born in Wytheville, a daughter of the late Aaron and Pearl Wright Hagee.

She was preceded in death by two brothers, Junior Hagee and James Hagee; and two sisters, Ola Umberger and Mozell Duncan.

Survivors include her husband, Francis Tipton Stoots of Fort Chiswell; two sons and daughters-in-law, Carl Jason and Wendy Stoots of Max Meadows, and Francis Tipton Jr. and Debbie Stoots of Speedwell; a brother, Clyde Hagee of Thomasville, N.C.; four grandchildren and one great-grandchild.

Margaret C. Carpenter

Margaret C. Carpenter, 73, of Wytheville, died Thursday, Oct. 15, 1998, in the Asbury Center at Birdmont Health Care Center.

A prayer service will be held Saturday, Oct. 17, at 8:30 p.m. at the Grubb Funeral Chapel. Funeral services will be Sunday, Oct. 18, at 3 p.m. at St. Mary's Catholic Church with Father Andre Antao. Interment will be in the West End cemetery.

She is survived by three daughters, Donna C. Anderson of Orange County, Calif., Margaret C. Sutherland Susan C. Hudson, both of Richmond; four sons, William A. "Bill" Carpenter of Great Falls, Michael S. "Mike" Carpenter of Acworth, Ga., David P. Carpenter and Daniel J. "Dan" Carpenter, both of Wytheville; nine grandchildren and two great-grandchildren; and her former husband, William P. "Bill" Carpenter of Wytheville.

The family will receive friends Saturday, Oct. 17, from 7 to 8:30 p.m. at the Grubb Funeral Home or at the home of her son, David P. Carpenter, 650 Mountain View Drive, Wytheville, at any time.

In lieu of flowers donations may be made to the American Red Cross, 418 Federal St., Bluefield, WV 24701-3008 with the designation "For the Wytheville Bloodmobile, in Memory of Margaret C. Carpenter."

Bernard E. Griffis

Bernard E. Griffis, 82, of Rural Retreat, died Friday, Oct. 16, 1998, in the Smyth County Community Hospital in Marion.

A graveside service will be held Sunday, Oct. 18, at 2 p.m. at the West End cemetery in Wytheville with Billy Johnson officiating.

He was born in Washington, D.C., a son of the late James Vance and Mary Theresa O'Keefe Griffis.

Survivors include his wife, Catherine Foote Griffis of the home; two brothers, Richard Griffis of Silver Spring, Md., and James Griffis of Rockville, Md.; and several nieces and nephews.

The family will receive friends Saturday, Oct. 17, from 7 to 9 p.m. at the Lindsey Funeral Home.

Ozella Mamie Kincer Hale

Ozella "Lucy" Mamie Kincer Hale, 81, of Route 1, Dublin, died Wednesday, Oct. 14, 1998, in the Pulaski Healthcare Center.

Funeral services will be held Saturday, Oct. 17, at 11 a.m. at the Bower Funeral Chapel with the Rev. Donna Hester officiating. Private entombment will follow at the Highland Memory Gardens Mausoleum, Dublin.

Born Feb. 24, 1917, in Cripple Creek, she was a daughter of the late Steve and Minnie Kincer. She was a member of the Mt. View United Methodist Church.

She was preceded in death by her husband, Fred Terry Hale; and many brothers and sisters.

Survivors include one son, Fred Terry Hale Jr. of Dublin; four grandchildren; six great-grandchildren; two brothers, Ellis Kincer of Greasy Creek in Wythe County, and Clifford Kincer of Wytheville; and a special niece, Joan Hartman.

The family will receive friends Saturday, Oct. 17, from 10:30 a.m. until service time and following the funeral.

John Leland King

John Leland King, 81, of Wytheville, died Tuesday, Oct. 13, 1998, in the Wytheville Manor Nursing Home.

Funeral services were held Friday, Oct. 16, at 11 a.m. at the Barnett Funeral Home in Wytheville with the Rev. Tony Holley officiating. Interment followed in the Mt. Mitchell cemetery.

He was born in Tazewell County, the son of the late George L. and Roxie Waddell King. He was a member of the Stony Fork Baptist Church.

He was preceded in death by his wife, Ovella Bertha Crigger King.

Survivors include a daughter and son-in-law, Janet and Conley S. Wright of Wytheville; three sons and daughters-in-law, Ivan McArthur King of Wytheville, Richard Norman King of Falston, Md., Vernon Leroy and Jeanette King of Benton, Ark.; two sisters, Virgie Owen of Falston, Md., and Cora Belle Wilson of Baltimore, Md.; a brother, James B. King of Wytheville; a special niece, Minnie Foglesong of Rural Retreat; three grandchildren, six great-grandchildren and several nieces and nephews.

Earnest Clyde Shinault

Earnest Clyde Shinault, 70, of Ivanhoe, died Wednesday, Oct. 14, 1998, in the Wythe County Community Hospital.

Funeral services will be held Saturday, Oct. 17, at 11 a.m. at the Jubilee Baptist Church with Pastor Donald Keller and Russell Catron officiating. Interment will follow in the Odd Fellows cemetery. American Legion Post 9 will conduct graveside military rites. The body will be taken the church one hour before service time.

A memorial service was held Friday, Oct. 16, at 8:30 p.m. at the Reese Funeral Home conducted by IVA Lodge 173 I.O.O.F.

He was a member of the Jubilee Baptist Church where he served as chairman of "Patriotic Sunday." He was a U.S. Navy and Army veteran of World War II and Korea; a member of IVA Lodge 173, Independent Order of Odd Fellows; charter member and chairman of the Board of the Ivanhoe Civic League; former Scout Master; helped reorganize the Ivanhoe Fire Department; a member of the Ivanhoe Bridle Club; and past P.T.A. president. He was the owner/operator of Shinault's Grocery in Austinville for many years.

He was preceded in death by his father, William Earnest Shinault; two stepfathers, Cecil Viars and Walter McRoberts; and one brother, Joe Shinault.

Survivors include his wife of 46 years, Diana C. Shinault of the home; two daughters and sons-in-law, Stephanie and Randall Dunford of Rural Retreat, and Renee and Deron Porter of Max Meadows; four sons and daughters-in-law, Brad and Debbie Shinault of Ivanhoe, Kevin and Kara Shinault of Pilot Mountain, N.C., David and Jewell Shinault of Williamston, S.C., and Richard and Dawn Shinault of Pelzer, S.C.; his mother, Nellie McRoberts of Ivanhoe; one brother and two sisters-in-law, Olen and Geraldine Shinault of Route 3, Wytheville, and Helen Shinault of Wytheville; two aunts, Ellen Shinault of Wytheville and Shirley Dunford of Ivanhoe; eight grandchildren, and several nieces, nephews, and close relatives.

The family suggests that those who prefer may make memorials to the Jubilee Baptist Church, in care of Diana Shinault, P.O. Box 438, Max Meadows, VA 24360.

Rosa Lee Fisher

Rosa Lee Fisher, 80, of Rural Retreat, widow of K.R. Fisher, died Tuesday, Oct. 6, 1998, in Brinklow, Md., at the residence of her son.

Funeral services will be held Saturday, Oct. 10, at 1 p.m. at the Lindsey Funeral Home Chapel with the Rev. Paul Malinowski officiating. Interment will follow in the Mt. Zion Community Church cemetery in Rural Retreat in the Crawfish Valley.

She was born in Wythe County, a daughter of the late William H. "Burr" and Molly Elizabeth Shupe Holston. She was a retired employee of Southwestern Virginia Mental Health Institute in Marion.

She is survived by one daughter and son-in-law, Rosa Mary and Larry Reedy of Rural Retreat; two sons and daughters-in-law, James C. and Naomi Fisher of Brinklow, Md., and Rodney and Frankie Fisher of Ridgely, Md.; one sister, Virgie H. Jones of Rural Retreat; nine grandchildren, 11 great-grandchildren, and several nieces and nephews.

Velma Pauley Hannah

Velma Pauley "Bannie" Hannah, 55, of Maryland, formerly of Wythe County, the Flatwoods community, died Tuesday, Oct. 6, 1998, in the Pulaski Community Hospital.

Funeral services were held Friday, Oct. 9, at 11 a.m. at the Flatwoods Church of God with the Rev. Bobby Alley and the Rev. Billy Dean officiating. Interment followed in the Bethany cemetery.

She was a member of the Flatwoods Church of God.

She was preceded in death by her father, John Sanders Pauley; and three brothers, Edgar "Buddy" Pauley, Johnnie Pauley, and Danny Ray Pauley.

Survivors include her husband, Frankie Jr. of the home; two sons, John Sanders Gibbs of St. Petersburg, Fla., and Frankie Hannah III of Marbury, Md.; her mother, Ethel B. Pauley of Route 1, Austinville; two sisters and brother-in-law, Minnie Lou Frazier of Wytheville, and Alice Marie and Charles T. Dunford of Austinville; a brother and sister-in-law, Charles and Janet Pauley of Route 1, Austinville; and two grandchildren.
