Marie Cooke Bedwell

Marie Cooke Bedwell, 78, of Roanoke, died Sunday, Sept. 27, 1998.

Funeral services will be held Wednesday, Sept. 30, at 11 a.m. at Simpson-Tharp Funeral Chapel, Peters Creek Road, Roanoke, with the Rev. George M. Pearson Jr. officiating. Graveside services will be held at 2 p.m. at the West End cemetery in Wytheville.

She was the widow of Richard A. Bedwell and was a member of Southview United Methodist Church.

She was preceded in death by one brother and three sisters.

Survivors include her sons and daughters-in-law, C. Donald and Karen Bedwell of Troutville, and J. Ronald and Patra Bedwell of Roanoke; two grandsons, Todd Bedwell of Fairlawn and Scott Bedwell of Roanoke; and two great-grandchildren, Alexis Bedwell and Annalyse Bedwell.

In lieu of flowers the family suggests that memorials be made to Good Samaritan Hospice or to the Building Fund at Southview United Methodist Church.

Charles Harold Gilman Sr.

Charles Harold Gilman Sr., 86, of Wytheville, died Sunday, Sept. 27, 1998, in the Wythe County Community Hospital.

Funeral services will be held Wednesday, Sept. 30, at 2 p.m. at the Gillman Funeral Chapel. Interment will follow in the West End cemetery.

He is survived by his wife, Nannie K. Gilman of Wytheville; three daughters and sons-in-law, Mary and Raymond Pierce, Kathryn and Jack Johnson, all of Thomasville, N.C., and Arlene and Garland Shelton of Wytheville; two sons and daughters-in-law, Charles H. "Rod" Jr. and Phyllis Gilman, and Paul A. "Jingles" and Sue Gilman, all of Wytheville; three sisters, Elizabeth McDaniel and Elsie Wright, both of Wytheville, and Helen Ross of Salem; one brother, William H. "Pill" Gillman of Wytheville; nine grandchildren and 16 great-grandchildren.

In lieu of flowers the family suggests that those who prefer may make contributions to the Wythe County Rescue Squad, P.O. Box 389, Wytheville, VA 24382.

Roy Meadows

Roy Meadows, 58, of Sugar Grove, died Monday, Sept. 28, 1998, in the Wythe County Community Hospital.

Funeral services will be held Friday, Oct. 2, at 11 a.m. at the Grubb Funeral Home Chapel with the Rev. Hubert Meadows and the Rev. Oscar Roark officiating. Interment will be in the Blue Springs United Methodist Church cemetery.

He was preceded in death by his father, Loran L. Meadows; and two brothers, Earnest Meadows and Sea Bee Meadows.

Survivors include his wife of 36 years, Linda Gail Martin Meadows of the home; three sons, Roy Charles Meadows Jr. of Fredricksburg, James Lorn Meadows and fiancee, Regina Robinson, and Russell Lee Meadows, all of Sugar Grove; three sisters and brothers-in-law, Shelby Jean and Raymond Vanover of Sugar Grove, Lorraine and Grady Hess of Oakwood, and Anna Jean and Danny Ray Carter of Montvale; seven brothers and sisters-in-law, Charlie C. and Judy Meadows of Tazewell, John Henry Meadows of Honaker, Roger and Pat Meadows of Oakwood, Larry J. and Alma Meadows of Richlands, Bill and Wilma Meadows of Rowe, Loran and Lilly Meadows of Sugar Grove, and Terry and Sherry Meadows of Oakwood; his mother, Mary Vernie Meadows of Oakwood; two grandchildren, Roy Charles Meadows III, and Linda Anne Marie Meadows; two stepgrandchildren, Brandon Robinson and Nichole Robinson; and several nieces and nephews.

The family will receive friends Wednesday and Thursday, Sept. 30 and Oct. 1, from 7 to 9 p.m. at the Grubb Funeral Home.

John Walter Ozaistowicz

John Walter Ozaistowicz, 64, of Punta Gorda, Fla., died Friday, Sept. 25, 1998, in the Wythe County Community Hospital.

A private memorial service will be held later.

He was a U.S. Navy veteran of the Korean Conflict and was a member of the American Legion, Elks, Volunteer Police Department, and Punta Gorda Seventh Day Adventist Church.

He is survived by his wife, Beverly J. Ozaistowicz of the home; three daughters, Dawn Chappell of Wytheville, Brenda Karamooz of West Hills, Calif., and Shely Roman of Loveland, Colo.; a son, Steven Ozaistowicz of Holland, Mich.; a sister, Bernice Webster of Lewiston, Mich.; a brother, Tom Ozaistowicz of Woodhaven, Mich.; and nine grandchildren.

Aussie J. Richardson

Aussie J. Richardson, 62, of Rural Retreat, died Saturday, Sept. 26, 1998, at the Smyth County Community Hospital.

Funeral services will be held Wednesday, Sept. 30, at 11 a.m. at the Newberry Funeral Home Chapel with the Rev. Bruce Shelton and the Rev. Hubbart Meadows officiating. Burial will follow in Rosewood Memorial Gardens in Rural Retreat.

She attended the Full Gospel Temple in Rural Retreat.

She is survived by her husband, John W. Richardson of Rural Retreat; a daughter, Denise Eller of Rural Retreat; three sons, Larry Eller of Marion, Gary Eller of North Wilkesboro, N.C., and Kerry "Toby" Eller of Rural Retreat; two sisters, Mrs. Monroe (Margaret) Mason of Chilhowie, and Stella Stewart of Seven Mile Ford; a brother, James W. Poole of Chilhowie; a twin brother, Joseph R. Poole of Nottingham, Pa.; a stepson, Jay Richardson Jr. of Marion; 14 grandchildren and several great-grandchildren.

Mary Elizabeth Groseclose

Mary Elizabeth Groseclose, 90, of Speedwell, died Sunday, Oct. 25, 1998, in the Wythe County Community Hospital.

A memorial service will be held Thursday, Oct. 29, at 2 p.m. at the Gillman Funeral Chapel.

She was preceded in death by a son, Delmar Groseclose.

Survivors include a daughter and son-in-law, Doris and Charles Arnold of Speedwell; four grandchildren, Janet Redman of Wytheville, Bobby Vaughan of Bluff City, Tenn., Debbie Dorsey of Olympia, Wash., and Greg Groseclose of Rural Retreat; seven great-grandchildren; and 22 nieces and nephews.

The family will receive friends Wednesday, Oct. 28, from 7 to 9 p.m. at the Gillman Funeral Chapel.

Betty Harris Umberger Rickey

Betty Harris Umberger Rickey, 71, of Wytheville, died Saturday, Oct. 24, 1998, in the Edgemont Center in Wytheville.

Funeral services were held Tuesday, Oct. 27, at 11 a.m. in the Barnett Funeral Home Chapel with the Rev. Tommy Johnson officiating. Burial followed in the Fairview cemetery.

She was the daughter of the late Fred and Mary Harris. She was retired from the Kroger Company and was a member of Fairview United Methodist Church.

She was preceded in death by one brother, Latney Harris; and one sister, Wanda King.

Survivors include her husband, Herbert Rickey of the home; one daughter and son-in-law, Elizabeth "Libby" and Garland Ingo of Wytheville; one son and daughter-in-law, Wylmer "Buddy" and Tess Umberger of Lynchburg; one sister, C. Evelyn Thompson of Wytheville; one uncle, Lloyd Sult of Wytheville; and three grandchildren and four great-grandchildren.

Stephen Randolph Archer

Stephen Randolph Archer, 33, of Route 2, Wytheville, died Tuesday, Nov. 10, 1998, in the Roanoke Memorial Rehab Center.

Funeral services were held Friday, Nov. 13, at 1 p.m. at the Barnett Funeral Home Chapel with the Rev. Joseph Harrison and the Rev. Randy Morris officiating. Interment followed in the Archer Family cemetery.

He was an employee of Renfro and a former member of the Max Meadows Fire Department and the Lead Mines Rescue Squad. He was an avid sportsman who loved hunting and fishing.

He is survived by his wife, Pamela Howery Archer of the home; two sons, Brandon Archer and Justin Archer, both of the home; his parents, Melvin G. and Linda Alley Archer of Route 2, Max Meadows; two brothers and sisters-in-law, Jeffrey and Tammy Archer, and Chris and Denise Archer, all of Route 3, Max Meadows; one half-brother, Jeremy Bishop of Wytheville; one nephew, Shaun Archer; his father-in-law and mother-in-law, Paul and Faye Howery of Max Meadows; and two brothers-in-law and sisters-in-law, Michael and Melissa Howery, and Todd Howery, all of Max Meadows.

The family suggests that those who prefer may make memorials to the American Cancer Society, 167 E. Main St., Abingdon, VA 24310.

Stella Corvin Etter

Stella Corvin Etter, 83, of Route 4, Wytheville, died Wednesday, Nov. 11, 1998, at her residence.

Funeral services will be Saturday, Nov. 14, at 2 p.m. in the Grubb Funeral Home Chapel with the Rev. Roger Kluttz officiating. Interment will be in the Lebanon Lutheran Church cemetery.

She was the daughter of the late Sanders and Julia Baumgardner Corvin.

She was preceded in death by her husband, Alva E. Etter.

Survivors include two sons and daughters-in-law, Alva R. and Evon Etter of Ferndale, Mich., and James R. and Evelyn Etter of Wytheville; one brother, Joe Corvin of Rural Retreat; four grandchildren, Ricky Etter, Sherri Etter, Melinda Brewer and Stephanie Watson; five great-grandsons, one step-great-grandson, and several nieces and nephews.

Mamie Sawyer Henderson

Mamie Sawyer Henderson, 88, of Wytheville, died Wednesday, Nov. 11, 1998, in the Birdmont Health Care Center.

Funeral services will be held Saturday, Nov. 14, at 2 p.m. at the Azen Baptist Church in Konnarock with the Rev. Ralph Surber officiating. Interment will follow in the Azen Baptist Church cemetery in Konnarock.

She was born in Ashe County, N.C., a daughter of the late Wilburn and Martha Miller Sawyer and was a longtime resident of Konnarock.

She was preceded in death by her husband, Oscar Henderson; one stepdaughter, Kitty Saunders; and two grandchildren, Ricky and Diane.

Survivors include five daughters and sons-in-law, Ann Skillman of Joppa, Md., Virginia Ruth Fedor of Wytheville, Alice and Elmer Shepherd of Honeybrook, Pa., Sharon Klapp of Abingdon, and Karen and Allen Davenport of Bristol, Tenn.; seven sons and daughters-in-law, Oscar and Kay Henderson of Pottstown, Pa., Robert Henderson of Marion, John Henderson of Manassas, Jerry and Helen Henderson of Wytheville, William and Sharyn Henderson of Manassas, Roger and Shirley Henderson of Wytheville, and Danny and Mary Henderson of Wytheville; a sister, Inis Paris of Chilhowie; 17 grandchildren, 21 great-grandchildren, and two great-great-grandchildren.

Elmer Richard Hopkins Sr.

Elmer Richard Hopkins Sr., 81, of Route 1, Max Meadows, died Tuesday, Nov. 10, 1998, in the North Carolina Baptist Hospital in Winston-Salem.

Funeral services were held Friday, Nov. 13, at 3 p.m. at the Barnett Funeral Home Chapel with the Rev. Randy Morris and the Rev. James Black officiating. Interment followed in the St. Paul Pentecostal Holiness Church cemetery. The American Legion Post No. 9 conducted graveside military rites.

He was retired from Burlington Mills and was a U.S. Army veteran of World War II and a member of the Pulaski V.F.W.

He was preceded in death by his parents, Charles V. and Emma Collins Hopkins; one sister, Zeola Harrell; and six brothers, Pete Hopkins, Malcolm Hopkins, Ernest Hopkins, Bascom Hopkins, Clarence Hopkins and William "Bill" Hopkins.

Survivors include his wife, Ruby Viars Hopkins of the home; two daughters and sons-in-law, Irene and Daniel Akers, and Judy and Joel Arnold, all of Max Meadows; four sons and daughters-in-law, Ronald and Shirley Hopkins Henley of Tarpon Springs, Fla., Jerry and Nancy Hopkins Henley of Powhatan, Elmer Jr. and Darlene Hopkins, and John and Patricia Hopkins, all of Max Meadows; one sister, Ruth St. John of Bristol; four brothers, Jesse Hopkins and Marion Hopkins, both of Pulaski, Junior Hopkins of Draper, and Thomas Hopkins of Richmond; three sisters-in-law, Connie Hopkins, Juanita Hopkins and Linnie Hopkins; his mother-in-law, Margie C. Viars; eight grandchildren and 11 great-grandchildren.

Yvonne "Vonnie" Love Maxwell, 70, of Gilroy, Calif., died Oct. 23, 1998, after a lengthy illness.

A memorial service will be held Saturday, Nov. 14, at the Habing Family Funeral Home, Gilroy, Calif.

She was born April 14, 1928, in Morgan Hill, Calif.. and lived there as a child before moving to Gilroy, Calif., where she had resided for over 51 years.

She is survived by her husband of 43 years, Ellis Maxwell of Gilroy, Calif., formerly of Crockett; three daughters and sons-in-law, Suzanne and Gary Jaszewski of Los Gatos, Calif., Jim and Merrilee Dal Bon of San Jose, Calif., and Dan and Celeste Tapia of Gilroy, Calif.; five grandchildren, Laura Morse of San Jose, Calif., Jeff Dal Bon of San Jose, Calif., David Jaszewski of Rancho Cordova, Calif., Brad Dal Bon of San Jose, Calif., and Daniel Tapia of Gilroy, Calif.; five sisters, Lucille Hodel, Marianne Rabe, both of Salinas, Calif., Mildred Kester of Stockton, Calif., Arlene Hoenck of Redwood City, Calif., and Carol Kenny of Oroville, Calif.; a brother, Jack Osborn of Salinas, Calif.; her mother-in-law, Mrs. George Maxwell of Crockett; and three sisters-in-law.

Vergie Graham Simmerman, 69, of Wytheville, died Tuesday, Nov. 10, 1998, in a North Carolina hospital.

Funeral services were held Friday, Nov. 13, at 11 a.m. at the Gillman Funeral Chapel. Interment followed in the Galilee Christian Church cemetery.

She is survived by a daughter and son-in-law, Trish and Jim Crockett of Cripple Creek; two sons and daughters-in-law, Jeff and Pat Simmerman of Wytheville, and Ricky and Paula Simmerman of Wytheville; two sisters and a brother-in-law, Lucille Clemons of Wytheville, and Hazel and Frank Shutlers of Salem; two brothers and sister-in-law, Louis and Vera Simmerman of Chesapeake, and Clarence L. Simmerman Jr.; three granddaughters, Tiffany Crockett, Krystal Crockett and Jennifer Crockett; one step-grandson, Randy Crockett; and one great-stepgrandson, Dalton Crockett.
