BASMAJIAN
On September 11, 2001, the terrorist attack on the World Trade Center Towers claimed the life of Mrs. Alysia B. Basmajian. Mrs. Basmajian was born in Longview, Wash., but spent the majority of her life in Richmond, Va. Over the past year Alysia lived in Bayonne, N.J. with her daughter, Kaela Grayce, age 2; and her husband, Anthony Basmajian. Mrs. Basmajian graduated from Godwin High School in 1996 and the College of William and Mary in 2000. At the time of the tragedy she was employed by the firm of Cantor Fitzgerald as an accountant. Other survivors include her parents, Milton and Barbara Burton; brothers, Kevin and Jeff and their wives, Dorothy and Brandon, all of Richmond. She was the daughter-in-law of Andre and Angela Basmajian and the sister-in-law of Aaron, Alden, and Alan Basmajian, also of Richmond. Alysia was a beautiful, loving, devoted, compassionate mother and wife, whose caring spirit and warm smile made everyone around her happy. A memorial service will be held Monday, October 1 at 7 p.m. at Trinity United Methodist Church, 903 Forest Avenue, to honor the passing of a wonderful mother, a loving spouse, a beloved daughter and sister, and cherished friend. A memorial register is available to sign at the Bliley Funeral Home's Central Chapel, 3801 Augusta Avenue, for those who are unable to attend the memorial service. Memorial contributions for a relief fund to assist the family may be sent to St. Christopher's School, 711 St. Christopher's Rd., Richmond, Va., 23226, payable to Anthony Z. Basmajian.

BEASLEY
Lewis H. Beasley Jr., 60, of Richmond, passed away Thursday, September 27, 2001. He is survived by his wife, Diane Beasley; daughter, Pennie Purvis of Pinellas Park, Fla.; sons, Michael Beasley of Richmond and Mark Beasley of Pinellas Park, Fla.; sisters, Myrtle Kitchen and husband, Robert of Greenville, S.C., Lois "Irene" Sineath of Richmond; a brother, Thurman Shepperson and wife, Jackie of Richmond; grandchildren, Lauren and Matthew Beasley, Sydni Purvis; a loving niece, Vickie Vejnar of Richmond. Graveside services will be conducted 1 p.m. Monday, October 1 in Oakwood Cemetery. No visitation scheduled. Morrissett Funeral Home in charge of arrangements.

BROOKS
Wallace Duaine "Wally" Brooks, age 63, of Mechanicsville, died Friday, September 28, 2001. He was preceded in death by his father, Carl A. Brooks. He is survived by his mother, Clarice Richardson Brooks; his wife, Jean Mallory Brooks; five children: daughter, Cheryl B. and her husband, James "Jimbo" Dixon; four sons, Wallace II "Bubba" and his wife, Susan, Douglas and his wife, Meg, Donald and his wife, Cheryl, Dean and his wife, Tammy; brother, Carl Brooks Jr. and his wife, Joy; two sisters, Norma Brainard, Ann Marano and husband, Billy; several nieces and nephews. Mr. Brooks retired from Trigon Blue Cross after 32 years of service. Remains rest at the Nelsen Funeral Home, 4650 S. Laburnum Ave., where the family will receive friends Saturday, 3 to 8 p.m. and Sunday, 2 to 4 and 6 to 8 p.m., and where funeral services will be conducted 11 a.m. Monday. Interment Greenwood Memorial Gardens.

BUCHANAN
Melody Ann "Pixie" Buchanan, 49, died September 26, 2001 after a lengthy illness. She is survived by her parents, Lee E. and Marjorie B. Buchanan; her sisters, Ginna B. Leuenberger, Kathy B. Trusdell; her grandmother, Louise A. Buchanan; and her loving friend and companion, Hurley Minish. She was a graduate of Hermitage High School and attended both VCU and ODU. Her family will receive friends from 1 to 4 p.m. Sunday at the Parham Chapel, Woody Funeral Home, 1771 Parham Rd. Graveside services will be conducted at 1 p.m. Monday at Westhampton Memorial Park.

CARLTON
Edna Walden Carlton, 83, of Center Cross, widow of Russell A. Carlton, died Friday, Sepetember 28, 2001. She was a life long member of Ephesus Baptist Church, where she formerly served as church clerk and Sunday School teacher. She retired from the Essex County Schools with 44 years service as a guidance counselor and teacher and was also a summer school teacher with St. Margaret's School for 20 years. She attended Longwood College and graduated from Richmond Professional Institute where she received her B.S. degree and later graduated from William and Mary with her master's in education. Survived by a son, Ray Carlton and his wife, Ellen of Center Cross; two grandchildren, Rusty Carlton of Center Cross and Kathy Carlton Ogg and her husband, Cliff of Tappahannock; two great-grandchildren, Russ Carlton and Maria Garnette Ogg. Funeral services will be held 3 p.m. Sunday in Marks-Bristow Funeral Home, Tappahannock. Interment Ephesus Baptist Church Cemetery. The family will receive friends from 5 to 8 p.m. Saturday at the funeral home. Memorial gifts may be made to Ephesus Baptist Church Building Fund, P.O. Box 1109, Dunnsville, Va. 22454.

CHARITY
Dorothy R. Charity of 1133 Hodges Rd., Richmond, died Thursday evening, September 28, 2001. Services by Tucker's Funeral Home, 415 Halifax St., Petersburg.

CHENAULT
Freddie Guy Chenault, age 91, died September 28, 2001. He was preceded in death by his wife, Alma A. Chenault. Survivors include two sons, David Chenault of Aylett and Joseph Chenault of Spring Hill, Fla.; one granddaughter, Jessica Chenault of State College, Pa.; and several nephews. The family will receive friends after 2 p.m. Saturday at the Mechanicsville Chapel of Bennett Funeral Home, 8014 Lee Davis Rd., where the funeral service will be held at 2 p.m. Sunday, September 30, 2001. Interment will follow in Signal Hill Memorial Park.

CIMBURKE
Clarence (Allen) Cimburke, 46, of Disputanta, died Wednesday, September 26, 2001 at Johnston-Willis Hospital, Richmond. Funeral services will be held Monday, October 1, 2001 at 1 p.m. in Calvary Baptist Church, Colonial Heights. The family will receive friends Monday from 11 a.m. to 1 p.m. prior to the service at the church. Flowers are welcome or contributions may be made to Calvary Baptist Church or the American Cancer Society. Funeral services by E. Alvin Small Funeral Home, Colonial Heights.

de PENNING
John-Charles de Penning, age 70, of Nepean, Ontario, Canada, passed away suddenly August 23, 2001 at the Ottawa General Hospital after a valiant fight against fibrosis of the lung and pulmonary hypertension. John, a consulting engineer with Pitometer Associates of New Jersey, will be missed by his many friends and colleagues in Richmond, Va., where he was a consulting engineer with the Department of Utilities, Water Department for a number of years. He is survived by his best friend and most precious wife, Carolyn (Treakle Kent), formerly of Palmer and Richmond, Va. Lovingly remembered by niece Anne (Hartmut Skottke) and their son, Sven, all of Wessenburg-Effeld, Germany. Fondly remembered by cousins Guido, Franca, Francesca, and Richardo Zennaro of Maestre, Italy; and Donatela, Georgio, Francesca, Massimo, and Giovanna Pettenello of Venice, Italy; and sister-in-law Donna (Jimmie Ray Bishop) of Irvington, Va. Sadly missed by devoted friends Dr. Katerina Pek, Cheryl Williams, and Mahmut Mahmutoglu of Ottawa, Ontario; and Moses Siedler of Delray Beach, Fla. A Funeral Mass will be held Saturday, September 29, at 11 a.m. in the Chapel of the Ottawa Civic Hospital, 1053 Carling Avenue, Ottawa, Ontario. DONNER
Leonard Carl "Bubba" Donner, age 83, died September 26, 2001. He attended St. Therese Catholic Church. Bubba was a master plumber and steamfitter. In his youth, he played third base for the All-Star Intercity Semi-pro League. He was one of eight members of Benedictine High's Championship Nine awarded positions on the News Leader's Annual All-City Schoolboy Baseball Team. Bubba was also known for his great tennis skills. He was the champion of the Annual City Playground Tournament for three consecutive years. He was preceded in death by his wife, Edith Temple Donner. Survivors include one daughter, Mary Temple Darouse; four sons, F. Mark Donner, L. Carl Donner, Gregory Donner, John P. Donner; one sister, Mary Ruston; three brothers, Eugene Donner, Bernard Donner, Robert Donner. Funeral services will be conducted by the Reverend Leo J. Guarnieri will be held 11 a.m. Monday at St. Therese Catholic Church, Gloucester. The family will receive friends 7 to 8 p.m. Sunday at Hogg Funeral Home, Gloucester Point. Interment will follow in Abingdon Episcopal Church Cemetery. In his memory, memorial contributions may be made to St. Therese Catholic Church, P.O. Box 669, Gloucester, Va. 23061.

DUFFEY
Forrest H. Duffey, 62, of Randolph, passed away on Thursday, September 27, 2001. He was preceded in death by his parents, Chester B. and Minnie Watts Duffey. He is survived by two sons, Blake A. Duffey and wife, Gena of Farmville and Barry A. Duffey and wife, Teresa of Roanoke; a brother, Jerry L. Duffey and wife, Debbie of Richmond; two nephews, Lee and Josh Duffey of Richmond; and good friends, Ida James and Virginia Vick of Colonial Heights; and many other caring relatives and friends. His remains rest at Browning Funeral Home, where the family will receive friends from 6:30 to 8:30 p.m. Saturday, and where funeral services will be held at 2 p.m. Sunday with interment in the Providence Presbyterian Church Cemetery, Nathalie, Va.

FARMER
On September 28, 2001, between a beautiful golden sunrise and a glorious ruby sunset, we lost a devoted husband, father, son, friend and volunteer. Emmett Cleveland Farmer, 58, of Chilesburg in Caroline County died at his home. Emmett worked at the Naval Surface Warfare Center at Dahlgren for 36 years until his retirement. After his retirement from Dahlgren, he worked for BAE Systems until present. Emmett served his country for 8 years in the United States Marine Corps Reserve. He was a member and deacon of County Line Baptist Church in Ruther Glen, a life member and active member for the Lady Smith Rescue Squad and past member and fire chief for the Lady Smith Fire Department. He is survived by his wife of 36 years, Marie Crisp Farmer; a daughter, Anna Farmer Sheves of Prince George; and his parents, Mr. and Mrs. Emmett R. Farmer of Port Royal. A funeral service will be held 2 p.m. Monday, October 1, 2001 at County Line Baptist Church, Ruther Glen, with Rev. Fred Skaggs officiating. Burial will follow in the church cemetery. Pallbearers will be David Smith, William Finney, Mac Wright Jr., John Green, Danny Wright, Audie Hayes, Wesley Jackson, Rea Williams and Edwin Farmer. The family will receive friends 6 to 8 p.m. Sunday at Storke Funeral Home, Bowling Green. In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to the Lady Smith Rescue Squad or County Line Baptist Church Building Fund.

Mrs. Willie C. Gee of Richmond, departed this life, Friday, September 28, 2001. Remains rest at the Mimms Funeral Home, 19th and Hull Streets. Funeral notice later.

HANKINS
Mr. James Poindexter "Deck" Hankins Jr. of 329 Mountain Rd., Halifax, Va., died September 27, 2001 at his home. He was born in Halifax County, Va. on January 1, 1925 and was 76 years old. He was the son of Mr. James Poindexter Hankins Sr. and Mrs. Laura Vick Hankins and was married to Hilda Moore Hankins for 51 years. He was a lifelong member and former senior warden of St. Johns's Episcopal Church. He attended V.M.I., was a veteran and P.O.W. of WWII. Mr. Hankins was a graduate of the University of Richmond in 1949 where he was a member of the Phi Gamma Delta fraternity. He was a former principal of the Turbeville Elementary School, first personnel director fo the South Boston Westinghouse plant and first director of development for Hampton Roads Academy in Newport News. He was a member of the Blue Ribbon Committee for the planning and building of Halifax County High School and was retired owner and operator of Hankins Furniture House. Mr. Hankins is survived by his wife, Mrs. Hilda Moore Hankins of Halifax; two daughters, Laura Lee Chandler and husband, Ted of Midlothian and Anne Moore and husband, Art of Midlothian; one son, James P. "Deck" Hankins III and wife, Debra of High Point, N.C.; seven grandchildren, Katie Chandler, Rebecca Chandler, Emily Anne Moore, Ryan Moore, Chandler Moore, Dexter Hankins, Kristina Hankins. Funeral services will be held 2 p.m. Saturday, September 29, at St. John's Episcopal Church, the Rev. David Booher officiating. Burial will take place in the church cemetery. Joseph Jefferson Harding Jr., 87, of Richmond, Va., formerly of Emporia, Va., died Thursday, September 27, 2001. He is survived by his wife, Marion Butler Harding, formerly of Roanoke, Va.; daughter, Carole Stalling of Lynchburg, Va.; two sons, Joseph Jefferson Harding III and Laurence Littlepage Harding, both of Richmond, Va.; four grandchildren, Harry Leland Lawson IV, Laura Lawson Trevey, Christin Carr Lawson, and Lindley Hampton Harding; four great-grandchildren, William Walker Lawson, Mary Leland Lawson, Carole Hogan Trevey, Catherine Carr Trevey; and a brother, Harry Harding of Roanoke Rapids, N.C. Mr. Harding was a graduate of Randolph Macon Academy in Bedford, Va. and Washington & Lee University in Lexington, Va. He was a shopping center developer, developing several properties in Virginia and North Carolina and was a principal developer and investor with Harding & Associates. He was a member of the Country Club of Virginia, the Commonwealth Club, and the Everglades Club of Palm Beach, Fla. His remains rest at the Bliley Funeral Home's Central Chapel, 3801 Augusta Ave., where the family will receive friends from 5:30 to 7:30 p.m. Friday. A funeral service will be held at 1:30 p.m. Saturday at St. Bridget's Catholic Church. Interment in Hollywood Cemetery for the family only. In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be made to Washington & Lee University or a charity of your choice.
