John Arno Funkhouser

ROCKINGHAM, N.C.A. - John Arno Funkhouser, 49, died Sept. 1, 2008, at First Health Moore Regional Hospital in Pinehurst, N.C.
Mr. Funkhouser was born Oct. 6, 1958, in Shenandoah County, son of Elsie Jane Wetzel Funkhouser of Woodstock and the late Wallace Funkhouser. He was a retired corporate sanitation supervisor for Tyson Foods and a teacher in Rockingham for a number of years. He was a member of Woodstock Moose Lodge 575.

Surviving with his mother are a daughter, Crystal Sexton of Woodstock; son, Jonathan Funkhouser of Edinburg; three sisters, Brenda Flynn of Richmond, Barbara Hawkins of Woodstock and Angelia Roberts of Georgia; three brothers, Jack Funkhouser of Woodstock, Henry Funkhouser and Carroll Funkhouser, both of Tennessee; and two grandchildren.

The funeral service was conducted Sept. 6 at St. Mary Pines Lutheran Church, Mount Jackson, by the Rev. Karen S. Van Stee. Burial was in Hudson Cross Roads cemetery.

Arrangements handled by Valley Funeral Service, Bowmans Crossing.

Violet C. Kline

INTERLACHEN, FLA. - Violet C. Kline, 69, died Aug. 31, 2008, at Haven Hospice Roberts Care Center following an extended illness.

Mrs. Kline was previously of Moline, Ill., and had resided in Putnam County for the past 18 years. She worked at Sambo’s Restaurant in Highland, Texas, for 11 years, and was a member of the Eagles No. 3822, Women of the Moose, VFW Post No. 10164 in Interlachen. She enjoyed playing bingo and dancing.

She was preceded in death by her son, Steven Kline.

Surviving are her children, Clara Stringfellow of Woodstock and Jeffrey Kline of Hawthornel; sisters, Janet Bray of Cumberland, Md., Donna Lamp of Cresaptown, Md,, Peggy Gorman of Charles Town, W. Va.; brothers, David Clingan of Moline, Ill., and William Dent Clingan Jr. of Yuba City, Calif.; granddaughter, Amanda Livingood; and great-granddaughter, Natalie Grace Livingood.

A memorial service will be held at a later date.

Samantha 'Sue' Leake

WINCHESTER - Samantha “Sue” Leake, 71, died Sunday, Aug. 31, 2008, at Winchester Medical Center.

Mrs. Leake was born in 1936 in Indiana, daughter of the late Orland Peters and Kathleen Brock. She was a glass-painting artist at Russell Studios and taught oil painting. She was a member of Winchester West Kingdom Hall of Jehovah’s Witnesses. She was wife of the late Charles William Leake Jr.

Surviving are a daughter, Debra Williams of Winchester; two sons, Danny Leake of Edinburg and David Leake of Winchester; two sisters, Barbara Peterson of Daytona, Fla., and Sarah DeHaven of Clear Brook; seven grandchildren; two great-grandchildren; two sisters, Barbara Peterson of Daytona, Fla., and Sarah DeHaven of Clear Brook.

She was preceded in death by a brother, Ronnie Peters.

The funeral service was conducted Friday, Sept. 5, at Omps Funeral Home, Winchester, by Clifford Hanson. Burial was in Shenandoah Memorial Park.

Mildred F. Mowery

MARTINSBURG - Mildred F. Mowery, 87, passed away Aug. 31, 2008, at Homewood at Crumland Farms, Frederick, Md.

Mrs. Mowery was born Sept. 22, 1920, in Old Town, Md., daughter of the late William H. and Grace Saville Funk. She graduated from Strayer College in 1946 with a degree in accounting. She was a member of Fellowship Church of the Brethren in Martinsburg, where she served as financial secretary for over 30 years, and was a member of The Homemakers Club in Inwood for many years.

In addition to her parents, she was preceded in death by her husband, Stuart W. Mowery; a brother, Ray Funk; and sister, Ruth Wagoner.

Surviving are her son, Thomas (Linda) Mowery of Gainesville; daughters, Elaine Mowery of Burke, Janet (Don) Liberatore of Basye, Mary (Phil) Blevins of Fairfax Station, and Donna (Craig) Morgan of Frederick, Md.; and “adopted” daughter, Rosemary Prillaman of Burke; one brother, Claude Funk; sisters, Audry Ogle, Helen Foley and Doris Linn; grandchildren, Brian Dean, Christie and Cathy Blevins, Dan, Amanda, Michael and Hannah Mowery, and Alex and Lauren Morgan; step-grandchildren, Kim Liberatore and Kevin Liberatore; and three step great-grandchildren.

Funeral services were conducted Friday, Sept. 5, at Rosedale Funeral Home, Martinsburg by the Rev. Doug Diamond. Burial followed in Rosedale cemetery.

Memorial contributions may be made to Fellowship Church of the Brethren, 505 Blossom Dr., Martinsburg, WV 25405.

Wilma 'Tiny' Kennedy Moyers

WOODSTOCK - Wilma “Tiny” Kennedy Moyers, 77, died Sept. 3, 2008, at UVA Medical Center in Charlottesville.

Mrs. Moyers was born June 22, 1931, in Columbia, Tenn., daughter of the late Robert Daniel Kennedy and Willie May Brown Kennedy. She was a retired bookkeeper and secretary for Lawrenceburg, Tenn., and was a member of First Baptist Church in Woodstock.

Surviving are her husband of 50 years, the Rev. Richard Moyers; nieces and nephews: David Jr., Bill, Karen, Randa, Randall Jr., and Bret Kennedy, K.K. Stroop, Tavye Morgan, Mike Mabry, Rick and Randy Tilley; sister, Nelda Kennedy Tilley of Cookeville, Tenn.; and brother, Randall Mike Kennedy Sr. of Woodstock.

In addition to her parents, she was predeceased by a brother, David Kennedy Sr.

The funeral service was conducted Sunday, Sept. 7, at First Baptist Church, Woodstock, by the Revs. Michael Moore and John Hamric, Dr. Ian Chapman, Tavye Morgan and Danny Pritchett. Burial was in Sunset View Memorial Gardens in Woodstock.

Memorials may be made to the Shenandoah County Animal Shelter, 268 Landfill Road, Edinburg, VA 22824.

Denise Ann Renner

LYNCHBURG - Denise Ann Renner, 42, formerly of Star Tannery, died Aug. 30, 2008, at Central Virginia Training Center in Lynchburg.

Miss Renner was born Sept. 7, 1965, in Woodstock, daughter of Eadline Grubb Renner of Star Tannery and the late Guy William Renner. She was a member of Gravel Springs Lutheran Church in Star Tannery.

Surviving with her mother are three brothers, Guy Dennis Renner of Woodstock, Ricky Berra Renner of Lebanon Church and Mickey Mantle Renner of Star Tannery; and sister, Deborah Renner Hulver of Baker, W.Va.

All services were private. Burial was in Gravel Springs cemetery in Star Tannery.

Arrangements handled by the Stover Funeral Home in Strasburg.

Don Gaston Roach

WOODSTOCK - Don Gaston Roach, 62, died Sept. 3, 2008, at his residence.

Mr. Roach was born June 7, 1946, in Fort Springs, (Greenbrier County) W.Va., son of the late James Gaston and Gladys Simmons Roach. He moved to Woodbridge in 1968 and was a longtime employee of Didlake Inc., where he worked a variety of jobs and from which he retired.

He was preceded in death by sisters, Phyllis A. Cuckler, Gail G. Harper and Bonnie G. Leete; and brothers, Lance S. Roach, Garland P. Roach and Randolph Roach.

Surviving are sisters, Evelyn L. Thorpe of Woodstock, June D. Tuck of Punta Gorda, Fla., and Ellen Thompson of Pine Bluffs, Wyo.; and brothers, Dorhal D. Roach of Bartow and Renick, W.Va., Kenneth E. Roach and Eric G. Roach, both of Woodbridge, and Steve M. Roach of Myrtle Beach, S.C.

Funeral services were conducted Monday, Sept. 8, at Pierce Funeral Home, Manassas, by the Rev. Theresa Ramsey. Interment followed in Stonewall Memory Gardens, Manassas.

Memorial contributions may be made to Didlake Inc., 8641 Breeden Ave., Manassas, VA 20110; or Muriel Humphrey Center, 13505 Hillendale Drive, Woodbridge, VA 22193.

Herman Leroy Silvious

LURAY - Herman Leroy Silvious, 76, died Sept. 3, 2008, at Page Memorial Hospital in Luray.

Mr. Silvious was born April 10, 1932, in Luray, son of the late John Franklin Silvious and Annie Catherine Miller Silvious.

Surviving are a daughter, Virginia Alberta Peterman of Alexandria; sister, Cecilla Marie Shepherd of Manassas; and three brothers, Kenneth “Jim” Douglas Silvious of Manassas, Clifford Earl Silvious of Mount Jackson and William E. Silvious of Luray.

The Rev. Delmas Meadows and Minister Debbie Spinner conducted the funeral service Monday, Sept. 8, at Bradley Funeral Home in Luray. Burial was in Beahm’s Chapel cemetery in Luray.

Dennis Lee "PeePee Hawk" Fulk
(August 5, 1948 - March 19, 2013)

Dennis Lee “PeePee Hawk” Fulk, 64, of Bergton, died March 19, 2013 at his residence.

He was born August 5, 1948 in Rockingham County and was a son of the late Joseph C. and Alma Ruth Hoover Fulk, Sr.

He retired from R.R. Donnelly and was a poultryman.

On May 30, 1970 he married the former Paula Fink, who survives.

He is survived by three sons; Shannon, Sheldon, Shawn Fulk, all of Bergton, 10 grandchildren, one great grandchild, and five brothers; Joseph C. “Ted” Fulk, Jr. of Fulks Run, David “Jim” Fulk of Harrisonburg, Billy Fulk of Fulks Run, Andy Fulk of Bergton, Rick Fulk of Penn Laird.

He was preceded in death by a daughter; Tina Louise Fulk, five brothers; Loy, Emerson, Albert, Lloyd, and Zane Fulk, and two sisters; Betty Showalter, Mary Catherine Fulk.

A funeral service will be held Saturday 10AM at the Grandle Funeral Home Chapel in Broadway. Burial will follow at Caplinger cemetery in Criders.

The family will receive friends Friday from 5-7 PM at the funeral home.

The family requests memorial contributions made to the funeral home to help with funeral expenses.

Charles 'Charlie' Vinton Southard Jr.

CLEVELAND, TENN. - Charles “Charlie” Vinton Southard Jr., 79, formerly of Broadway, died Sept. 3, 2008, at Sky Ridge Medical Center in Cleveland, Tenn.

Mr. Southard was born Nov. 20, 1928, in Mount Crawford, son of the late Charles Vinton and Willie Mae Glover Southard Sr. He served in the U.S. Navy from 1945-1947 aboard several ships, including the USS Roosevelt.

He was very proud of his country and all those that served the U.S.A. He was very proud to have passed his Realtor’s exam on the first attempt and was an outstanding salesman throughout his life. He was also a proud father that stood by his children through the best and worst of times.

Surviving are his former wife of 40 years, Lela Southard of Harrisonburg; three children, Brad Southard of Cleveland, Tenn., Gail Williams and husband Paul of Blackstone, Mongold and husband Steve of New Market; eight grandchildren, Britney Wampler and husband Chris of Richmond, Schaefer and Foster Southard of Cleveland, Tenn., Steven Mongold Jr. of New Market, Kaitlyn Williams, presently attending the U.S. Coast Guard Academy in New London, Conn., Cassidy Mongold of New Market, Peyton and Austin Williams of Blackstone; two brothers, Maynard Southard of Harrisonburg, Oliver Southard and wife Sandra of Harrisonburg; and two sisters, Phyllis Tutwiler and husband Tom of Harrisonburg, Janice Chapman and husband Ray of Gate City.

The funeral service was conducted Sunday, Sept. 7, at Grandle Funeral Home, Broadway, by Pastor Paul Glovier. Burial followed in Oaklawn cemetery in Bridgewater.

Memorial donations may be made to the VFW of one’s choice to honor fallen and returning veterans of Iraq and other countries around the world where they have bravely served to preserve our freedom.

Stanley Lee Ward

EDINBURG - Stanley Lee Ward, 78, died Sept. 3, 2008, at his home.

Mr. Ward was born Nov. 24, 1929, in Red Banks, son of Robert and Hattie Fox Ward. He was an Army veteran and a sheet metal mechanic. He was the husband of the late Arlene Anna Lonas Ward.

Surviving are three sons, Roger Ward of Poolesville, Md., Steven Ward and Dwight Ward, both of Deale, Md.; three sisters, Betty Cooper, Marie Atchison and Josephine Painter, all of Edinburg; brother, Wayne Ward of Edinburg; and two grandchildren.

The funeral service was conducted Saturday, Sept. 6, at Valley Funeral Service, Bowmans Crossing, by Pastor Nelson Pettit. Burial was in Trinity Powder Springs Church cemetery, Basye.

Joseph Leon Atchison

EDINBURG - Joseph Leon Atchison, 68, died Saturday, June 7, 2008, at Winchester Medical Center.

Mr. Atchison was born May 7, 1940, in Accokeek, Md., son of the late Joseph Carroll Atchison and Kathleen Willett Atchison Crisman. He had been a forklift operator for Bowman Apple Products in Mount Jackson and heavy equipment operator for Lawson Construction. He was a member of Mount Jackson Moose Lodge 979.

Surviving are his wife, Marie E. Atchison; two sons, Larry Moton of Maurertown and John Moton of Strasburg; three daughters, Lavon Runion of Edinburg, Kathy Moton Thompson of Timberville and Dixie L. Braithwaite of Melbourne, Fla.; sister, Barbara A. Forsyth of Edinburg; four brothers, Pryor Atchison of Woodstock, Steve Crisman of Luray, Clarence Crisman and Robert Crisman, both of Edinburg; five grandchildren; and three great-grandchildren.

He was predeceased by a brother, Lawrence Crisman.

A graveside service was conducted Tuesday, June 10, at Cedarwood cemetery, Edinburg, by the Rev. Elmo Mantz.
