Elspeth Peyton Borden

STRASBURG – Elspeth Peyton Borden, 96, formerly of Middletown, died Wednesday, June 21, 2006, at Mayfair House in Strasburg.

Mrs. Borden was born Feb. 21, 1910, in Ethyl, daughter of the late William Tyler and Elspeth Hall Peyton. She was a teacher for 28 years in Middletown, Berryville and Stephens City. She was a member of Grace United Methodist Church in Middletown, sang in the church choir, and member of the Middletown Volunteer Fire and Rescue Company Ladies Auxiliary. She was the wife of the late George Wilson Borden.

Surviving are a son, Peyton Borden of Richmond; a granddaughter; and two great-grandchildren.

A funeral was conducted Saturday, June 24, at Grace United Methodist Church, by the Rev. Anne Hough. Burial was in Mount Carmel cemetery, Middletown. Memorials may be made to Grace United Methodist Church, P.O. Box 61, Middletown, VA 22645; Middletown Volunteer Fire and Rescue Company, P.O. Box 111, Middletown, VA; or to Blue Ridge Hospice, 333 W. Cork St., Winchester, VA 22601.

Harold Leon “Lee” Caldwell III

RICHMOND – Harold Leon “Lee” Caldwell III, 45, an 11-year resident of Richmond and former resident of Strasburg, lost his battle with cancer on Monday, June 19, 2006, at his home.

Mr. Caldwell was employed by Graphics Packing International as a parts supply manager. His interests included bass fishing and involvement with various car racing teams including NASCAR. He was active in the local hockey community. Surviving are his two daughters, Nikki Lynn of Edinburg and Kristina Lynn of Richmond; one son, Christopher Lee of Richmond; his mother and stepfather, Carol and Michael Dryden of Edinburg; one sister, Alecia Ann Peer of Strasburg; two nephews, Hunter and Tyler Peer of Strasburg; three uncles, Wayne Reed and wife Fran of Mokena, Ill., Tom Caldwell of Toledo, Ohio, and Terry Caldwell and wife Laurie of Myerston, Pa.; one aunt, Cordie Adcock of Erie, Pa.; one grandfather, Dan Adcock of Oil City, Pa.; and three special friends, Brad Robison, Bill Harris and Lee Stryker.

He was preceded in death by his father, Harold Leon Caldwell Jr.

A memorial service will be held 7 to 9 p.m. Wednesday, June 28, at the Strasburg Moose Club.

Paul Conard Smith
(June 1, 1945 - October 1, 2012)

Paul Conard Smith, 67, of New Market, passed away Monday, October 1, 2012 at Life Care Center of New Market.

Paul was born in West Virginia on June 1, 1945, and was a son of the late Robert and Ina (Dove) Smith.

He retired from Rockingham Poultry in Broadway, and was a member of Harrisonburg Seventh Day Adventist Church.

On July 29, 1976, he was united in marriage to Violet Smith, who survives.

Paul is also survived by two daughters, Ellen Showalter Witmer of Ohio, and Teresa Showalter Miller of Stuarts Draft; a son, Paul Smith, Jr of IN; two stepdaughters, Lavonne Arehart and Wanda Miller; four sisters, Karen Cook of Bridgewater, Sue Gery of Grottoes, Eva Mae Rodeffer of Hinton, Kay Caplinger of Harrisonburg; three brothers, Harold Smith of MD, John Smith of Mt. Solon, and David Smith of Broadway. He is also survived by nine grandchildren, five step-grandchildren, and a great step-granddaughter. He is preceded in death by brothers, Robert, Ronald, and Merl Smith, and a sister, Helen Smith.

A funeral service will be conducted 1:00 p.m., Thursday, October 4, 2012 at Johnson Funeral Service in Bridgewater, with Pastor Terry Ross officiating. Burial will follow at Emmanuel Church cemetery.

The family will receive friends from 7 until 8 p.m. Wednesday, October 3, 2012 at the funeral home.

Goldie Virginia Coffelt

EDINBURG – Goldie Virginia Coffelt, 93, passed away Tuesday, June 20, 2006, at Shenandoah Memorial Hospital in Woodstock.

Mrs. Coffelt was born March 29, 1913, in Maurertown, daughter of the late George W. and Ophia Feller Windle. She was a homemaker and member of Mount Zion Lutheran Church at Fairview (west of Woodstock). She was the wife of the late Joseph Melvin Coffelt. Lovingly known as “Granny,” she helped raise her granddaughters and great-grandchildren, spending time with each one. A special friend, Sharon Helsley of Edinburg, was like a granddaughter to her.

Surviving are a son, Alger Lee Coffelt and wife Mary, with whom she made her home; three granddaughters, Jane deCourcy, Joan Fletcher and husband Robert, and Julie Cooper and husband Butch, all of Edinburg; six great-grandchildren, Jennifer Funkhouser and husband Ronnie of Mount Jackson, Dawn deCourcy of Woodstock, Matthew deCourcy, Skyler Fletcher, Jarrett and Jordan Cooper, all of Edinburg; and great great-granddaughter, Ashlyn Funkhouser of Mount Jackson.

She was the last surviving member of her family. She was preceded in death by a great-grandson, Brett Cooper.

Graveside rites were conducted Thursday, June 22, at Sunset View Memorial Gardens, Woodstock, by the Rev. Timothy Orrell.

Mary Virginia Clem Dellinger

MAURERTOWN – Mary Virginia Clem Dellinger, 79, passed away Thursday, June 22, 2006, at her home.

Mrs. Dellinger was born Nov. 20, 1926, in St. Luke, daughter of the late Roy Sidney and Bessie May Wine Clem. She was a homemaker and member of St. Luke Brethren Church.

She was preceded in death by a brother, Ralph Clem.

Surviving are her husband, Frank Dellinger; sister, Mabel Orndorff of Woodstock; brother, Roy Clem Jr. of Woodstock; two nieces, Norma Morrison and Lisa Richman; two nephews, Roger Clem and Daryl Orndorff; great-nephew, Dexter Wayne Richman; and numerous nieces and nephews.

A graveside service was conducted Saturday, June 24, at St. Luke cemetery, by the Rev. Anthony Keim.

Flossie Louise Gantt Depoy

HAMILTON – Flossie Louise Gantt Depoy, 82, died Thursday, June 22, 2006, at a local nursing home.

Mrs. Depoy was born Dec. 19, 1923, in Washington, D.C., daughter of the late Charles Robert and Mary Louise Johnson Gantt. She retired from the CIA as a file room supervisor and was a member of The Worship Center in Leesburg. She was the wife of the late Clifford Graves Depoy.

Surviving are four sons, Clifford G. Depoy Jr. of DeSoto, Texas, Charles W. Depoy of Duncanville, Texas, Timothy W. Depoy of Winchester and Dale E. Depoy of Purcellville; 18 grandchildren; and 32 great-grandchildren.

Services will be conducted at 10 a.m. Saturday, July 1, at Enders & Shirley Funeral Home, Berryville, by Pastor Joseph Adams and 2 p.m. at Fairview Church of the Brethren in New Market by the Rev. Lewis Armentrout. Burial will be in the church cemetery.

The family will receive friends Saturday from 7 to 9 p.m. at the funeral home and 1 to 2 p.m. at the church.

Susan Faulkner

Susan Faulkner, 60, of Port St. Lucie, Fla., died Saturday, June 17, 2006, at Treasure Coast Hospice in Stuart, Fla.

Mrs. Faulkner was born in Pottsville, Pa. and lived most of her life in South Florida. She was employed by Celeste & Associates Law Firm. Prior to that, she worked for Peggy Adams Animal Rescue League in West Palm Beach.

Surviving are her husband, George Faulkner, formerly of New Market; two sons, Jeffrey Faulkner of Port St. Lucie and Stephen Faulkner of Miami; and a granddaughter.

Also surviving are her mother-in-law, Louise Nairn of New Market; a sister; an aunt; and several cousins.

Memorial contributions may be made to Treasure Coast Hospice, 1201 SE Indian St., Stuart, FL 34997.

Lula Grace Gochenour

Lula Grace Gochenour, 85, of Woodstock, died Friday, June 23, 2006, at Mayfair House in Woodstock.

Mrs. Gochenour was born May 20, 1921, in Bergton, daughter of the late Walter K. and Gertrude Stultz Stepp. She was a homemaker and worked part time for the U.S. Forest Service. She was a member of Mount Zion Lutheran Church, WELCA and Saumsville-Fairview Homemaker’s Club. She was the wife of the late Alfred H. Gochenour.

Surviving are four sons, Richard J. Gochenour of Fort Valley, Samuel L. Gochenour of Edinburg, William C. Gochenour and Robert Gochenour, both of Woodstock; daughter, Linda L. Gochenour of Maurertown; 10 grandchildren; three step-grandchildren; 10 great-grandchildren; and four step great-grandchildren.

The funeral was conducted Tuesday, June 27, at Dellinger Funeral Home, Woodstock, by the Rev. Timothy Orrell. Burial was in Mount Zion Lutheran Church cemetery at Fairview.

Timothy W. Haines

Timothy W. Haines, 49, of Aliquippa, Pa., died Saturday, June 24, 2006, in Pittsburgh.

Mr. Haines was born April 6, 1957, in Altoona, Pa., son of Elizabeth Barr Haines Welch of Inwood, W.Va., and the late George William Haines. He was a Marine Corps veterans of the Vietnam War. He was a chairperson for the FAA, reclassifying air traffic and was a member and union representative of the National Air Traffic Controllers Association, serving as regional and eastern regional vice president. He was a board member of Lakeland College.

Surviving with his mother are his wife, Sabrina Wood Haines; two daughters, Erika Haines and Mariah Haines, both of Aliquippa; two brothers, Paul Haines of Winchester and Michael Haines of Woodstock; two sisters, Deborah Bolton of Inwood and Karen Benner of Bunker Hill, W.Va.; and his grandmother, Grace Silver of Inwood.

The funeral will be conducted at 1 p.m. Thursday, June 29, at Jones Funeral Home in Winchester by the Rev. Stanley J. Krempa. Burial will be in Shenandoah Memorial Park.

The family will receive friends 2 to 4 p.m. and 7 to 9 p.m. Wednesday at the funeral home.

Kenneth Earl Kirby

Kenneth Earl Kirby, 31, of Woodstock, died Thursday, June 22, 2006. Mr. Kirby was born Feb. 10, 1975, in Bluefield, W.Va., son of Myron Kirby and the late Carman Greene Kirby.

Surviving with his father are his wife, Keli Kirby; son, Tristan Kirby of Woodstock; daughter, Brianna Kirby of Woodstock; and his grandmother, Clara Kirby. A memorial service will be conducted at 2 p.m. Friday, June 30, at the Dellinger Funeral Home in Woodstock by Pastor Dave M. Casto.

Hazel Louise Shipp Moyer

STRASBURG – Hazel Louise Shipp Moyer, 76, left this earth on May 20, 2006, to join her Heavenly Father, husband Jack Allen Moyer, parents Iva and Charles Shipp, and nine siblings. She demonstrated great courage as she fought the fight with respiratory and cardiac illnesses.

Mrs. Moyer graduated from Strasburg High in 1947. She married Jack in 1950 and one daughter, Cynthia Anne, was born to their loving union. Her husband retired from the U.S. Navy in 1960 and moved the family to Pensacola, Fla. where she retired from the Pensacola Junior College, having worked as an executive secretary for many years. After her husband’s death in 1983, Mrs. Moyer remained in Pensacola until her health began to fail. In 1999, she moved to Yorktown with her daughter and four grandchildren.

Surviving are her daughter, Cindi Moyer; grandchildren, Robert, Shelby, Kate and Ryan Thomas; nephew, Wayne Shipp of Strasburg; niece, Mary (Dennis) Wheeler of Santa Rosa, Calif.; and a few four-footed members of her household that gave and received immeasurable love and comfort in her last few years.

A private service will be held at a later date at Barrancas National cemetery, Pensacola, Fla.

Mary Elizabeth “Susie” Pittman

ELKTON – Mary Elizabeth “Susie” Pittman, 78, died Sunday, June 25, 2006. Mrs. Pittman was born Aug. 1, 1927, in Poplar Branch, N.C., daughter of the late William Clayton and Etha Alice Hines. She was a faithful member of International Pentecostal Church of Christ and worshipped locally at the I.P.C.C. Mercy Seat Church.

Her husband of 46 years, the Rev. James H. “Jimmy” Pittman, preceded her in death Aug. 26, 1989.

Surviving are two sons, the Rev. James T. “Jimmy” Pittman of Grottoes and Walter C. Pittman of New Market; two daughters, Robin P. Taylor of Shenandoah and Tammy P. Meadows of Elkton; two sisters, Madeline Smith and Mattie Bell Cahoon of Virginia Beach; 10 grandchildren; eight great-grandchildren; and a number of nieces and nephews.

Pastors Wayne Taylor and James T. Pittman II will conduct the funeral at 1 p.m. Wednesday, June 28, at I.P.C.C. Mercy Seat Church, 180 Tanyard Bridge Road, 1.5 miles east of Elkton off Route 33. Burial will follow at Elk Run cemetery in Elkton.

Wilda Rosemary Kaylor
(December 21, 1917 - September 14, 2012)

Wilda Rosemary (Sandy) Kaylor, 94, of Port Republic, Virginia, died September 14, 2012. She was a farmer and a homemaker.

Wilda was born December 21, 1917 in Pleasant Valley, and was a daughter of the late Tillman G. and Lucie Magdalene (Tutwiler) Sandy.

She graduated from Bridgewater High School. She was active in 4-H Club, a 4-H All Star, and leader of the Port Republic 4-H for many years. She was a long time member of St. Jacob's Spaders Lutheran Church where she played the piano, taught Sunday school, and was a member of the women's organization. She received the American Tree Farm System Region 7 Outstanding Tree Farmer Award and the Virginia Forestry Association Outstanding Tree Farmer for Rockingham County for the year 1990.

On May 9, 1946, she married the late John Lewis Kaylor, Sr.

She is survived by three children, Elizabeth Ellen Kaylor, and John Lewis Kaylor, Jr, both of Port Republic; and Rosemary Critzer and husband Whitney of Afton, Virginia; a sister, Margaret Sayre of Stuarts Draft; and many nieces and nephews.

In addition to her parents, Wilda was preceded in death by two sisters, Myrtle Lam, and Evelyn Flick; and three brothers, Raleigh Sandy; Vernon Sandy; and William Sandy.

A memorial service will be conducted 7:00 p.m. Wednesday, September 19, 2012, at St. Jacob's Spaders Church, 3555 Spaders Church Road, Mt Crawford, with Pastor G. William "Bill" Nabers officiating. The family will receive friends after the service or at the Kaylor home at any time. Burial will be private.
