Audrey "Jo" Bathke Whiteley
(November 20, 1922 - February 10, 2012)

Audrey “Jo” Bathke Whiteley, 89, of Irvington died February 10, 2012.

Born on November 20, 1922, in Wisconsin, Jo Whiteley was raised in Oshkosh and Madison, and received her undergraduate degree from the University of Wisconsin. She was enrolled in law school at New York University when she eloped in 1945 to marry Robert Fitch Shepard Whiteley, who had returned from the war in Europe. They then moved to the San Francisco Bay Area where Mr. Whiteley completed his degree at the University of California at Berkeley and enrolled in the Hastings College of the Law. The Whiteleys subsequently returned to Washington, D.C., where Jo received advanced degrees from George Washington University and was employed as an analyst at the CIA until her retirement. Jo was widowed in 1968 and after retirement in 1982, she moved to Irvington from McLean, Virginia.

After retirement, Jo entered a long and happy “second life” in the house that she loved. For many years she volunteered as a docent at Historic Christ Church. She was on the Board of the Lancaster Community Library, where she was the Chairman of the Books and Coffee series for many years, a member of the originating committee of the Library’s “Sundays at Two” series, and the creator of a series of programs promoting the Library and what it could offer to the community. She also was an enthusiastic participant in the Great Decisions discussions for years.

Jo also had an abiding love of the bay and for many years kept and used sailboats at a property in Ocran that she and her husband had bought prior to his death. Jo was an avid needlepointer, and won a blue ribbon at the county craft fair for an oriental rug done in petit point. She showered her friends and children with needlepoint pieces of every variety from more rugs to pillows – lots of pillows – to a law school graduation present for her daughter consisting of a leather case with a needlepointed cover consisting of the Shakespeare quote “ The first thing we do, let’s kill all the lawyers”. She was a superb knitter with an abiding interest in all of the fabric arts. She also loved to garden and adored azaleas and orchids.

Perhaps one of her greatest attributes was her belief that she could do anything if she just put her mind to it. She took carpentry and upholstery classes in order to fix her own furniture. Her love of learning and reading remained until her death.

She is survived by a son, Richard Peyton Whiteley; of Virginia, and daughters Susan Hope Whiteley, of California, and Anne Fullerton Whiteley, and son-in-law Michael Lincoln Adams, both of Vermont.

A memorial gathering will be held in her memory at a later date this spring.
