Jason T. Toney

Jason Todd Songho Toney, 33, of Roanoke, died Feb. 4, 2004 at the University of Virginia Hospital in Charlottesville.

Born in the Republic of Korea, he was a son of Omer and Pauline Yates Toney of Roanoke.

He was adopted from the World Vision Orphanage in the Republic of Korea when five years old. He was a member of the Church of Christ in Salem. He was a graduate of the Virginia Western Community College of Roanoke and was employed with Advance Auto Parts in Roanoke. He was an avid bowler.

Additional survivors: brothers, Larry Toney and wife, Peggy, of Fayetteville, NC, Michael Toney and wife, Melody, of Simi Valley, CA; fiancée, Rita Edmonds, of Roanoke; nieces, Jennifer Toney and Lottie Toney; and great-niece, Hannah Toney.

The funeral was conducted at 11 a.m. Feb. 9 at the Springville Christian Church with Johnny Elmore officiating.

Burial followed at Maplewood cemetery in Tazewell.

In lieu of flowers, the family requests that memorial donations be made in memory of Jason Toney, to World Vision Sponsorship, P.O. Box 70200 Tacoma, WA 98491-0200.

A memorial service was conducted Feb. 10 at 7 p.m. at the Salem Church of Christ in Salem with the Rev. Michael Flinchum officiating.

Peery & St. Clair Funeral Home in Tazewell was in charge of arrangements.

Deanna F. Williams

Deanna Faye Williams, 43, of Meadows of Dan, died Jan. 31, 2004 at her home.

Born in Tazewell County, she was a daughter of the late Walter and Kathleen Hunt Lankford.

She had lived at Meadows of Dan the past four years and was of the Holiness Faith.

In addition to her parents, she was preceded in death by one sister, Linda Lankford, and one brother, Daniel Monroe Lankford. Her husband, Richard "Ricky" Kenneth Williams also passed away Jan. 31 at their home.

Survivors: daughter, Melinda Lankford and husband, Scottie Hardy, of Richlands; step-daughter, Angela Kay Williams of Warren, MI, sons, Brian Keen and fiancée, Sandra Bootes, of Buffalo, NY, Joshua Keen and wife, Donna, of Lebanon; sisters, Daisy Lester and husband, Dennis, and Shree Lester and husband, Ronnie, all of Shortt Gap, Connie Keen of Richlands, Hazel Selker and husband, Kent, of Spring Hill, FL, Jody Mitchell of Jewell Ridge; brothers, Leslie Lankford of Tazewell, Lloyd "Hoppy" Lankford and wife, Hazel, of Richlands, Scott Lankford and Don Lankford, both of Dade City, FL, Fonzie Lankford and wife, Tina, of Stanton; step-father, Samuel Jr. Lankford of Dade City; and grandchildren, Courtney Lankford, Tiffany Hardy, Travis Jordan Keen and Alexis Faith Keen.

Joint funeral services for Deanna Faye Williams and her husband, Richard "Ricky" Kenneth Williams were conducted Feb. 5 at 1 p.m. at the Hurst-Scott Funeral Chapel in Richlands with Rev. Clarence Brown and Rev. Edward Hartman officiating.

Interment followed in the Hankins cemetery in Richlands.

Richard "Ricky" Williams

Richard "Ricky" Kenneth Williams, 49, of Meadows of Dan, died Jan. 31, 2004 at his home.

Born in Florida, he and was a son of the late Joseph Monroe and Mary Louise Williams.

He had made his home in Florida most of his life, living in Meadows of Dan for the past four years and was a former truck driver.

In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by one brother, Lloyd Joseph Williams. His wife, Deanna Faye Williams, also passed away Jan. 31 at their home.

Survivors: daughter, Angela Kay Williams of Warren, MI; step-daughter, Melinda Lankford and husband, Scottie Hardy, of Richlands; step-sons, Brian Keen and fiancée, Sandra Bootes, of Buffalo, NY, Joshua Keen and wife, Donna, of Lebanon; sisters, Minnie Pearl Petty and Katie Diane Lankford and husband, James, all of Vesta; and four step-grandchildren.

Joint funeral services for Richard "Ricky" Kenneth Williams and his wife, Deanna Faye Williams, were conducted Feb. 5 at 1 p.m. at the Hurst-Scott Funeral Chapel in Richlands with Rev. Clarence Brown and Rev. Edward Hartman officiating.

Interment followed in the Hankins cemetery in Richlands.

Emma L. Winzerwrith

Emma Lee Lawson Winzerwrith, 83, of Annapolis, MD, died Feb. 3, 2004 at her residence in Annapolis.

Born in Doran, she spent most of her life as a homemaker. In later years, from 1981-1993, she worked as an aide at the Claybourne Senior Citizen Center in Annapolis. She was a member of Harvest Church of God in Edgewater, MD.

She was preceded in death by her first husband, Marvin Lawson, and her former husband, Virgil Winzerwrith.

Survivors: sons, Jack D. Lawson of Annapolis, Ronie H. Lawson of Pasadena, MD, Wayne K. Lawson of Glen Burnie, MD, Bradley M. Lawson of Perry Hall, MD; daughters, Ruby L. Baldwin of Annapolis, Carol S. Casey of Crownsville, MD; 13 grandchildren; and 19 great-grandchildren.

The funeral was conducted Feb. 6 at 1 p.m. at Taylor Funeral Home Chapel in Annapolis.

Burial followed in Hillcrest Memorial Gardens at Annapolis.

Violet K. Artrip

Violet Kegley Artrip, 82, of Winter Garden, FL, died Jan. 30, 2004 in a Winter Garden health care facility.

Born Feb. 3, 1921, in Russell County, she was a daughter of the late Bawen and Destie Crabtree Kegley.

She was of the Baptist faith.

In addition to her parents, she was preceded in death by her husband, Shirley Artrip; two daughters, Rhonda Beverly and Sandra Gragg; two sisters, Jewell Smith and Betty Dye; one brother, Miles Kegley; one grandson, Timothy Beverly; and one granddaughter, Shari Ball.

Survivors: daughters, Nancy Ball of Brooksville, FL, Tammy Parry of Sebastian, FL; sister, Peggy Fields of Delaware, OH; seven grandchildren; and two great-grandchildren.

The funeral was conducted Feb. 2 at 11 a.m. in the Honaker Funeral Home Chapel at Honaker with Rev. Harless Hess officiating.

Interment followed in Russell Memorial cemetery at Lebanon.

H. Paul Buskell

H. Paul Buskell, 94, of Cedar Bluff, died Feb. 1, 2004 at his home.

Born in Richlands, he was a son of the late Albert Greene and Rose Elizabeth Fields Buskell.

He was a lifelong resident of the Richlands and Cedar Bluff areas and was a member of the Richlands Presbyterian Church. He served in the U. S. Army and was a veteran of World War II. He began his career in sales at Marco Warner Wholesale as a young boy. His work there sparked an entrepreneurial spirit, which led him to establish Buskell Brokerage Company, selling to wholesale grocers throughout the Virginia, West Virginia, Kentucky and Tennessee regions. After serving in the Army during World War II, he returned to Richlands, moved a mountain and built Gateway Shopping Center.

He established the first subdivisions in Tazewell County at Claypool Hill, Pounding Mill and Tazewell, opening the area for hundreds of homes. The first County Industrial Park property was also sold by Buskell to S & S Corporation. Helping to establish the Richlands Area Industrial Development Corp. he and others obtained a charter resulting in the Eastern Isles Clothing Factory. He later moved another mountain and built the Claypool Hill Mall. He, along with Jim Lindsey, masterminded the Clinch Valley Bank.

Among other accomplishments, he was a Kentucky Colonel, a charter member of the Richlands Lions Club, and was presented the coveted Citizenship Award in 1982, presented by the Richlands Area Chamber of Commerce. He worked hard to better his community and the lives of his fellow citizens. From his humble beginnings, he forged a world of business that touched thousands of lives, and did it in the face of difficulties that would have deterred many. His accomplishments were shared with his wife of 68 years, Elizabeth, who worked diligently by his side.

In addition to his parents, two brothers, Roy Lake Buskell and James Kyle Buskell, and son-in-law, Barry A. Bandy, preceded him in death.

Survivors: wife, Elizabeth Virginia Goodwin Buskell; daughters, Carole Lombard Cooke and husband, Hugh, and Mrs. Barry (Paula) Bandy, all of Richlands; sister, Bettye (Mary Elizabeth) McLaskey of Richlands; grandsons, H. Shannon Cooke and wife, Carlene, of Richlands, Jason-Paul Trevor Cooke and wife, Heather, of Leesburg; granddaughter, Barri G. Gregory and husband, Trent, of West Jefferson, NC; and special friend, Darrell Addison of Richlands.

The funeral was conducted Feb. 3 at 11 a.m. at the Hurst-Scott Funeral Chapel in Richlands with Rev. Judy C. McKnight, Rev. Barry Absher and Rev. Richard Stone officiating.

Interment followed in Greenhills Memory Gardens at Claypool Hill.

Katherine A. Casey

Katherine Avanell Casey, 77, of Bristol, VA, died Feb. 2, 2004 in a Bristol, TN, hospital.

Born March 27, 1926 in Buchanan County, she was a daughter of the late Steven Thomas and Sarah Ida Whitt Street.

She had lived in the Bristol area for the past year and a half, moving from the Drill section of Honaker. She was a member of the Pentecostal Holiness Church.

In addition to her parents, she was preceded in death by her husband, Luther Casey; five sisters, Creasy Blankenship, Maudie Rasnake, Gertrude Hale, Stella Compton and Virgie Street; and four brothers, Hassell Street, Carroll Street, Roy Street and Taulbert Street.

Survivors: son, Howard Leon Casey of Bristol, VA; sister, Cora Dye of Honaker; foster sisters, Della Cardona of Bristol, VA, Ethel Dye of Richlands; grandsons, Nathaniel Casey and Andrew Casey; stepsons, Fayne Casey of Drill, Earl Casey of Honaker, Jim Casey of Ohio; and four step-grandchildren.

The funeral will be conducted Feb. 5 at 2 p.m. in the Honaker Funeral Home Chapel at Honaker with Rev. Ancil Childress and Rev. Peerman Lester officiating.

Interment will follow in the Street cemetery at Rowe.

Nora S. Christian

Nora Smith Christian, 77, of the Slate Creek area of Grundy, died Feb. 1, 2004 in Holston Valley Medical Center at Kingsport, TN, following an extended illness.

Born in Buchanan County, she was a daughter of the late William Columbus (Lummie) and Lottie Jane Rowe Smith.

She was a lifelong resident of Buchanan County and was a former member of the Stacy Church of God where she served as Sunday School Teacher, treasurer and worked with the Ladies Auxiliary. She and her late husband, Basil Junior Christian, were owners and operators of the Christian Grocery Store on Slate Creek for many years. She was a devoted wife, loving mother and grandmother.

She was preceded in death by her husband, Basil Junior Christian, Jan. 18, 1984, two sisters and two brothers.

Survivors: daughters, Marcella Ratliff of Buckeye Lake, OH, Mary Beth and husband, James Christian, of Grundy; sons, Ted and wife, Peggy Christian, of Smithfield, Carson and wife, Carolyn Christian, of Summerduck, Freddy and wife, Rachel Christian, and Michael and wife, Kathy Christian, all of Grundy; sisters, Agnes Cole and Nell Mullins, both of Elkton, MD, Alpha Bandy and Kathy Addair, both of Tazewell, Louemma Mullins of Bristol, VA, Ilene Mullins of Elkton, VA; niece, Janice Rife of Grundy; eight grandchildren; three step-grandchildren; seven great-grandchildren; and four step-great-grandchildren.

The funeral was conducted Feb. 3 at 1 p.m. at Grundy Funeral Home Chapel with Rev. Ancil Childress and Rev. Doug Blankenship officiating.

Burial followed in Mountain Valley Memorial Park at Big Rock.

Services were conducted Feb. 2 at 7 p.m. at the funeral home.

Lola J. Dye

Lola J. Dye, 94, of Newark, OH, formerly of Raven, died Jan. 31, 2004 in an Ohio hospital.

Born in Russell County, she was a daughter of the late Joe and Dora Mays Brown, both Russell County natives.

She had made her home in the Raven area most of her life living in Ohio the past four years.

In addition to her parents, she was preceded in death by her husband, Cleatis Dye, Sr.; three sons, Cleatis Dye, Jr., Donald Dye, and Douglas Dye; four sisters; and two brothers.

Survivors: daughters, Sylvia Hicks and husband, Billy, of Newark, Doris Patterson of Reynoldsburg, OH, Virginia Childress and husband, Arland, of Tazewell, Billie Jean Lawson and husband, Don, of Swords Creek; sons, Carl Dye and wife, Bertie, and Bobby Dye and wife, Delores, all of Licking Co., OH; sister, Martha Wilson of Raven; 41 grandchildren, 20 great-grandchildren; and several great-great-grandchildren.

The funeral was conducted Feb. 3 at 2 p.m. at the Hurst-Scott Funeral Chapel in Richlands with Rev. Paul Griffith officiating.

Entombment followed in the Clinch Valley Memorial cemetery Mausoleum in Richlands.

Willard "Dink" Gent

Willard N. "Dink" Gent, of Avon Park, FL, died suddenly Jan. 17, 2004 in a Florida hospital.

A memorial service commemorating his life was conducted Jan. 31 at 2 p.m. at the Hurst-Scott Funeral Chapel in Tazewell. A reception followed the service.

In lieu of flowers, a donation can be made to a favorite charity.
