Josephine Spillane O'Brien "Jo" of Richmond went to meet her mate Monday, June 25, 2001. She was the widow of Hiram O'Brien "Obie". Survivors include children, Pat Noble, Coni McCann and Harold O'Brien; five grandchidren, one great-grandson; two sisters, Mary Chisholm and Madeline Martin. Her remains rest at the Bliley Funeral Home's Chippenham Chapel, 6900 Hull Street Rd., where the family will receive friends 5 to 8 p.m. Wednesday and where funeral services will be held 11 a.m. Thursday. Interment Dale Memorial Park. In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be made to the American Lung Association.

OWENS
Departed this life suddenly June 27, 2001, Miss Elnora Kidd Owens, of 608 N. 26th Street, Apartment 101. Remains rest at Walter J. Manning Funeral Home, 700 N. 25th St. Funeral notice later. The family may be contacted at 804-421-3646.

ROBERTS
Annetta V. Roberts, age 28, entered into eternal rest on June 23, 2001. She is survived by her parents, Christine and Milton L. Roberts; daughter, Tierra Roberts; sisters, Marvis, Barbara and Bernadette Gillian; aunts, Barbara Payne, Rev. Mary Grain and Maria Loney; uncles, Granderson, George, Samuel and Jerome Booker; a host of nieces, nephews, other relatives and friends, whom several are devoted, Wayne Barlette, Marcia Lee and Alonzo Jenkins. Remains rest at the Chiles Funeral Home, Inc. 2100 Fairmount Ave., where family will receive friends tonight from 6 to 7 p.m. After 12 noon Friday, remains will rest at Blessed Hope Baptist Church, 2311 Ford Ave., where services will be held at 1 p.m. with Rev. James Allbrooks Sr. officiating. Interment Oakwood Cemetery.

ROOS
Matthew Robert Roos, age 17, departed this life suddenly on Tuesday, June 26, 2001. He is survived by his parents, Larry Robert "Rooster" and Jane Stitzer Roos; his sisters, Jamie Lynn and Rachel Ann Roos; his paternal grandfather and stepgrandmother, Robert James and Minnie Knick Roos; his maternal grandparents, Charles R. Jr. and Ann Williams Stitzer. Matt also leaves behind aunts, uncles, cousins and friends who love and miss him. He attended Varina High School and was an active member of Varina Church of the Nazarene Youth Fellowship. The family will receive guests at the Nelsen Funeral Home, 4650 S. Laburnum Ave., 6 to 8 p.m. Thursday. Funeral services will be held 10 a.m. Friday at the funeral home chapel. Interment Forest Lawn Cemetery. Memorial donations should be made to Varina Church of the Nazarene, 5350 Darbytown Rd., Richmond, Va. 23231.

TOWNSEND
Annie S. Townsend, 94, of Richmond, died June 27, 2001. She was the widow of Mack G. Townsend Sr. Arrangements by Bliley's Staples Mill Chapel. Funeral notice later.

Mrs. Susie E. Woolridge of Richmond departed this life June 26, 2001. Remains rest at the Mimms Funeral Home, 19th and Hull Sts. Funeral notice later.

BERLINGHOFF
Maxine Philbates Berlinghoff, 87, of Richmond, went to be with the Lord Monday, December 31, 2001. She was the widow of A.E. Berlinghoff Sr. and is survived by her children, A.E. Berlinghoff Jr. and his wife, Nola, James Richard Berlinghoff, Jean B. Reynolds and her husband, Charles and Donna Faye Campbell and her husband, John; six grandchildren, Tony, Stephen, Mary Beth, Sherry, Christopher and Ryan; 13 great-grandchildren, also numerous nieces and nephews. Mrs. Berlinghoff was a member of the Sunshine Sunday School Class at Carlisle Ave. Baptist Church. Her remains rest at the Nelsen Funeral Home, 4650 S. Laburnum Ave., where the family will receive friends from 2 to 4 and 6 to 8:30 p.m. Wednesday and where funeral services will be conducted 2 p.m. Thursday, January 3, 2002. Interment Washington Memorial Park. In lieu of flowers, memorial donations may be made to your local rescue squad or to Carlisle Ave. Baptist Church, 2010 Carlisle Ave., Richmond, Va. 23231.

BULLOCK
John A. Bullock, 83, of Richmond, Va., died Sunday, December 30, 2001. He is survived by his wife, Ellis A. Bullock; daughter, Laverne B. Parrish; and one grandson, Christopher M. Parrish and his wife, Noel; also a devoted friend, Eleanor Houston; two brothers, Harry O. Bullock and his wife, Dorothy of Richmond, Va., and David W. Bullock of Kutztown, Pa.; three sisters, Jannie B. Barlow of Baltimore, Md., Edith B. Sizer of Colonial Heights, Va., and Avis B. Eacho and her husband, Harrison of King William, Va.; a stepmother, Evelyn P. Bullock of Ruther Glen, Va. Mr. Bullock was retired from American Tobacco Co. and was an active member of Aldersgate United Methodist Church. Visitation will be held from 2 to 4 and 6 to 8 p.m. on Tuesday at Nelsen Funeral Home, 4650 S. Laburnum Ave., Richmond, Va., and where services will be held on Wednesday at 1 p.m. Interment Washington Memorial Park. In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be made to Aldersgate UMC, 3006 E. Laburnum Ave., Richmond, Va. 23223.

BULLOCK
Mrs. Lillie Mae Bullock of 3316 N Street died December 30, 2001. Remains rest at Scott-Lightfoot Funeral Home, 3021 N Street. Funeral notice later.

CARTMELL
Ruth Davies Cartmell, 78, of Lexington, died Sunday, December 30, 2001 at her residence at Kendal in Lexington. Mrs. Cartmell was born on November 30, 1923 in Washington, D.C. and was a daughter of the late Joshua W. Davies Sr., M.D. and Lockie Kincer Davies. She was a member of the R.E. Lee Memorial Episcopal Church in Lexington, the Daughters of American Revolution in Williamsburg, the Junior League, and the Colonial Dames. She attended Spence School in Manhattan, graduated from the Bronxville High School in Bronxville, N.Y. in 1942, graduated Vassar College 1944/45. After graduating college, she worked at the First National City Bank in New York, N.Y. until marriage in 1951, raised four children and continued to be an active volunteer on behalf of Vassar College. She was a loyal and loving wife and mother. Mrs. Cartmell is survived by her husband, Nathaniel M. Cartmell Jr., Lexington; one son, Nathaniel M. Cartmell, III, Berkeley, Calif.; three daughters, Sara A. Cartmell, M.D., Potomac, Md., Leah P. Cartmell, Easthampton, Mass., Rachel D. Cartmell Northhampton, Mass.; and seven grandchildren. A memorial service will be conducted at 2 p.m. Friday, January 4, 2002 at the R.E. Lee Memorial Episcopal Church in Lexington with Rev. Thomas O'Dell officiating. Arrangements by the Harrison Funeral Home, Lexington.

COLEMAN
Mrs. Myra E. Coleman of Richmond departed this life December 24, 2001. She is survived by friends and family. Remains rest at the Mimms Funeral Home, 19th and Hull Sts. A graveside service will be held 10 a.m. Wednesday, January 2, at Oakwood Cemetery.

COUSINS
D'Arcy Paul Cousins Sr., 89, of Midlothian, Va., died Saturday, December 29, 2001. He was preceded in death by his devoted wife of 51 years, Mildred Grosso Cousins. The family will receive friends Tuesday, January 1, 2002, from 6 to 8 p.m. at the Huguenot Chapel, Woody Funeral Home, 1020 Huguenot Rd. Funeral services will be held Wednesday, January 2, 2002, 1 p.m. at Huguenot Road Baptist Church. Interment Dale Memorial Park. In lieu of flowers, Mr. Cousins wishes are that contributions be made in his memory to Huguenot Road Baptist Church Foreign Mission Trip Fund or the Daily Planet, 517 West Grace St., Richmond, Va. 23220.

CREWS
Mrs. Delma H. Crews of South Hill died Sunday, December 30, 2001. She is survived by a daughter and son-in-law, Janice Crews and William L. Lewis of South Hill; a son and daughter-in-law, David Lawrence and Cindy Q. Crews of Bracey; three grandchildren, two great-grandchildren; two sisters, Thelma H. Northington of South Hill and Jennie Sue Langford of Emporia. Mrs. Crews was a member of South Hill United Methodist Church and the Prestwood Chapter of the DAR. A graveside service will be conducted at 11 a.m. on Tuesday, January 1, by Rev. Ed Johnson at Bethany Baptist Church. Memorial considerations may be directed to South Hill United Methodist Church or Southside Rescue Squad. Farrar Funeral Home is in charge of arrangements.

CROSWELL
Thomas James Croswell, 68, of Reedville, died Saturday, December 29, 2001. He was son of the late Howard and Bessie Croswell and graduated from Reedville High School in 1953. Mr. Croswell served as a military policeman in the U.S. Army from 1956 to 1958 with service at Fort Jackson, S.C., Fort Gordan, Ga. and Redstone Arsenal, Ala. He retired from a 40-year career in the menhaden fishing industry, most of it with Zapata Haynie and its predecessor companies. He worked up and down the east coast on various menhaden fishing boats, as plant manager and net manufacturing manager of the company's Reedville factory, general manager of the company's Rockland, Maine factory and as vessel manager of the company's Dulac, La. factory. Activities in the community include serving as past president of the following: Fairfields Volunteer Fire Department, Northumberland Co. Rescue Squad, Glebe Point Campground Association, Bethany UMC Men's Club, Past Superintendent, Bethany UMC Sunday School, and was currently serving as vice president of Roseland Cemetery Corporation. Surviving are two sons, Thomas Paul Croswell of Reedville and David Lee Croswell, a member of the U.S. Army stationed in Korea; daughter-in-law, Pamela DuPree Croswell; and three grandsons, Thomas Paul Croswell Jr., Michael James Croswell and Matthew Lee Croswell, all of Reedville; brother, Leslie Franklin Croswell of Smithfield, Va. and former wife and lifelong friend, Virginia Bray Croswell of Reedville. Funeral services will be conducted 11 a.m. Wednesday at Bethany United Methodist Church, Reedville with interment in Roseland Cemetery. Friends may call Tuesday from 7 to 9 p.m. at the church. Memorial contributions may be made to Roseland Cemetery, P.O. Box 32, Reedville, Va. 22539.

DAVIDSON
Mary Sewart Dugger Davidson passed away at her home in Brodnax, Va. December 30, 2001. She is survived by her husband, Charles E. Davidson III; her beloved children, a son, David D. Davidson; two daughters, Mary Lloyd Davidson and Jeannie Velvin and her husband, Randy Velvin; and her much beloved granddaughter, Ashley Nicole Velvin. No greater sacrifice was made for her family than by her. A graveside funeral service will be conducted at 11 a.m. Wednesday at Rock Hill United Methodist Church Cemetery near Lawrenceville. The family will receive friends from 7 to 8:30 p.m. at Crowder-Hite-Crews Funeral Home.

Died December 30, 2001, Mrs. Dorothea Ellison Davis, 1712 N. 19th Street. Remains rest at Joseph Jenkins Jr. Funeral Home, 2011 Grayland Ave. Funeral notice later.

Grace A. Davis, 91, of Richmond, went to be with the Lord on Saturday, December 29, 2001. She was the widow of Dick H. Davis. She is survived by her daughter, DeAnne L. Scott and her fiance, Dean Willis; sons and daughters-in-law, Wayne H. and Margaret Davis, Charles K. and Nancy Davis; grandson, Douglas E. Scott and his wife, Lori; four great-grandchildren; and a niece, Ethel Holmes. The family will receive friends from 2 to 4 and 6:30 to 8:30 p.m. Tuesday at the Morrissett Funeral Home, 6500 Iron Bridge Rd. (Rt. 10). Her funeral service will be held 11 a.m. Wednesday at the funeral home. Interment in Forest Lawn Cemetery. In lieu of flowers, the family suggests that memorial contributions be made to the Bensley-Bermuda Volunteer Rescue Squad, 2600 Rio Vista Rd., Chester, Va. 23831.

Cecil G. "Jerry" Dryden, 67, of Richmond, went to be with his Lord Monday, December 31, 2001. He was preceded in death by a daughter, Sharon Dale Dawson. He is survived by his wife of 45 years, Nellie R. "Junell" Dryden; sons, Ronald Sterling Dryden and Kevin Gerald Dryden, both of Richmond; a brother, Leslie L. Dryden and wife, Carolyn of Roscoe, Ill.; a stepsister, Rose Bennett of Rockford, Ill.; half-sisters, Patricia VanTassel of Coloma, Wis. and Susan Murphy of Rockford, Ill.; stepbrothers, Allen and Arthur Lee, both of Friendship, Wis.; eight grandchildren, one great-grandchild. Family will receive friends at the Morrissett Funeral Home, 6500 Iron Bridge Rd. (Rt. 10) from 6 to 8 p.m. Wednesday. a graveside service will be conducted 11 a.m. Thursday in Dale Memorial Park.
