Agnes Bowyer

WEST POINT - Agnes Updike Bowyer, 83, died Dec. 26, 1996.
She was a member of First Baptist Church in West Point and a former member of Quaker Baptist Church in Body Camp, Va.
She is survived by her husband, Royal E. Bower; one son, Kenneth Royal Bowyer of Danville; onse sister, Florence U. Saunders of Salem; two grandchildren; and one great-grandchild.
The funeral will be held Sunday at 2 p.m. at Vincent Funeral Home in West Point. Burial will be in Morgan's Baptist Church cemetery Monday at 2 p.m.
The family will receive friends Sunday at the funeral home at the time of the funeral.

James Collins

The funeral for James Hollie Collins, 74, of 201 Girard St. will be conducted 2 p.m. today from Swicegood Funeral Home Chapel by the Rev. Daryl S. Joyce and the Rev. Gilmer Setliff. Burial will be in Mountain View cemetery.
He died Thursday, Dec. 26, 1996, in his residence, following 10 years of declining health.
Born Aug. 16, 1922, in the Callands community of Pittsylvania County, he was a son of "Jim" Collins and Bessie Hodges Collins.
He was married to Gaynell Setliff Collins, who survives.
For the past 55 years, he had lived in Danville, where he was employed by Dan River Inc. for 35 years until his retirement. He was also of the Baptist faith.
In addition to his wife of the residence, survivors include a daughter, Pauline Appling Tivnan of Danville; a son, Dennis Wayne Collins of Callands; a brother, Curtis Collins of Roanoke; four grandchildren; and six great-grandchildren.
He was predeceased by a brother, David Collins.
The family will receive friends at the residence.

Thomas Davis

SUTHERLIN - The funeral for Thomas Wister Davis, 84, 1329 Reeves Mill Road will be conducted 2 p.m. today from Laurel Grove Baptist Church by the Rev. Mark Blair. Burial will be in the church cemetery.
He died Thursday, Dec. 26, 1996, in Duke Medical Center, following two weeks of declining health.
Born Sept 3, 1912, in Pittsylvania County, he was a son of James Nathan Davis and Lessie Milam Davis.
On Dec. 24, 1936, he was married to Dorothy Compton Davis, who survives.
He was a member of Laurel Grove Baptist Church. He spent most of his life in Sutherlin, where he was employed as a farmer.
In addition to his wife of the residence, survivors include three daughters, Barbara D. Riffey of Plano, Texas, Gloria D. Casey of Pelham, N.C., and Linda D. Scearce of Danville; a brother, Nathan H. Davis of Danville; four sisters, Mamie D. Christenbury of Durham, N.C., Mildred D. Lewis of Henderson, N.C., Margaret D. Henderson of Keeling and Martha D. Satterfield of Halifax; four grandchildren; and seven great-grandchildren.
The family will receive friends at the residence.

Ada McCain

Ada Rebecca Durham McCain, 83, of 608 Jackson Heights died Saturday, Dec. 28, 1996, in Martinsville Memorial Hospital after a decline in health of two years.
Born on Jan. 8, 1913, she was the daughter of the late James Robert Durham and the late Rebecca Rhodenizer Durham.
McCain had lived all of her life in Danville where she was a graduate of the Memorial Hospital School of Nursing Class of 1957. She worked for the former Memorial Hospital and had retired from the former Danville Nursing Home.
She was a member of Highland Baptist Church where she had taught Sunday School for a number of years.
She was married to Howard E. McCain Sr. who predeceased her on April 4, 1985.
She is survived by one son, Howard E. McCain Jr. of Danville; two daughters, Gloria M. Kirby of Danville and Valuria (Boots) M. Simpson of Dry Fork.
She was predeceased by a daughter, Peggy Gaynell McCain.
She is also survived by seven grandchildren and nine great-grandchildren.
The funeral will be held Monday at 11 a.m. at Wrenn-Yeatts North Main Chapel by the Rev. Gilmer Setliff. Interment will follow in Mountain View cemetery.
The family will receive friends at the residence of her daughter, Gloria M. Kirby at 2408 Ridge Road off State Route 41.

Nora Moore

Nora May Moore, 87, of 416 Cedar Road, Ringgold died Saturday, Dec. 28, 1996 in Danville Regional Medical Center after a decline in health of several years.
Born on March 11, 1909 in Pittsylvania County, she was the daughter of the late David J. May and late Lillian M. May.
She lived most of her life in the Mountain Hill Community. She and her late husband Peter Burton Moore owned and operated the former downtown Shell station for many years.
She was of the Baptist faith.
She is survived by three sons, David Irvin Moore of Ringgold; P.B. Moore, Jr. of Danville; James Earl (Tiny) Moore of Seneca, S.C.; and 11 grandchildren.
Graveside services will be held Monday at 11 a.m. in Leemont cemetery by the Rev. Robert L. Vermillion.
The family will receive friends at the residence.
Wrenn-Yeatts Funeral Home is in charge of arrangements.

Jeremy Shelton

Jeremy Blake Shelton, 5, of 3003 Mary Lane died Friday, Dec. 27, 1996, at Duke University Medical Center.
Born Oct. 26, 1991, he was the son of Raymond Shelton and Cherie Doss Shelton.
In addition to his parents of the residence, he is survived by one brother, Jeffrey Taylor Shelton of the residence; one sister, Ashley Marie Shelton of the residence; a maternal grandmother, Joyce H. Doss of Danville; and paternal grandparents, Mr. and Mrs. Frank Dillon of Danville.
He was a member of Woodberry Hills Baptist Church.
Graveside services will be held Monday at 10:30 a.m. at Highland Burial Park by the Rev. Lewis Harris.
The family will receive friends at the residence.

James Taylor

James Thomas Taylor, 39, of 337 Summit Road, died Saturday, Dec. 28, 1996, at Danville Regional Medical Center.
Born Sept. 3, 1957, he was the son of John Douglas Taylor, Sr., who survives, and the late Dorothy Creasy Taylor.
Taylor had lived in Danville for 37 years.
In additon to his father, he is survived by a brother, John Douglas Taylor, Jr. of Danville; and two sisters, Sandra T. Gauldin and Patricia T. Fowlkes of Danville.
Graveside services will be held Monday, Dec. 30 at 11 a.m. in Chatham cemetery in Chatham by the Rev. Don Davidson.
The family will receive friends at the residence.

Fannie Wiles

Fannie B. Wiles, 85, 319 Flint St., died Wednesday, Dec. 25, 1996, in Danville Regional Medical Center.
Born Nov. 25, 1911, in Axton, she was a daughter of Joe Wesley Williams and Cora Milner Williams.
She was married to Elder Melvin Wiles Sr.
She was a member of Bethel United Holiness Church, where she was Mother of the church and recording secretary.
In addition to her husband of the residence, survivors include two daughters, Jeanett A. Stewart of Royse City, Texas, and Peggy J. Wiles of Brooklyn, N.Y.; four sons, Frank Williams of Louisville, Ky., Roy L. Wiles and Melvin Wiles Jr., both of Danville, and Edward Wiles of Bladensburg, Md.; two sisters, Florence E. Lawson of Kimball, W.Va., and Laura Samuels of Washington, D.C.; five brothers, James Williams of Chester, Pa., Isaac Williams of Cleveland, Ohio, John Williams of Alexandria, Alfred Williams of Chesterfield, and Joseph Williams of Middletown, N.J.; 26 grandchildren; and 29 great-grandchildren.
The funeral will be conducted 2 p.m. Monday from Loyal Baptist Church by the Rev. Vaughan Brayboy Jr. Burial will be in Floral Hills Memory Gardens.

Archer Yeatts

The funeral for Archer White Yeatts, 81, 169 Rocklawn Ave., will be conducted 2 p.m. today from Wrenn-Yeatts North Main Chapel by the Rev. Steve Carlton. Interment will be in Highland Burial Park, where military honors will be given by American Legion Memorial Post No. 325 Honor Guard.
He died Friday, Dec. 27, 1996, in his residence, following several years of declining health.
Born Nov. 29, 1915, in Pittsylvania County, he was a son of Richard White Yeatts and Minnie Powell Yeatts.
He was married to Irene Casey Yeatts, who died Jan. 1, 1990.
He spent most of his life in Danville. He was employed by the City of Danville Fire Department and was assistant fire chief when he retired. He was also a member of Moffett Memorial Baptist Church.
He is survived by a daughter, Patricia Y. Pollard of Chesapeake; a brother, William Bennett Yeatts of Danville; and a sister, Eva Y. Neathery of Danville.
The family will receive friends at the residence.

Frances Drake

BUFFALO JUNCTION - Frances Lea Stevens Drake, formerly of Buffalo Junction, died Sunday, Dec. 22, 1996, in Twin Oakes Convalescent Home of South Boston.
Born in Springfield, Mo., she was a daughter of Clarence and Nina Stevens.
She was married to Howard Drake, who predeceased her.
She is survived by a son, Lester Drake of Chula Vista, Calif.; two daughters, Nancy L. Wilbourn of Buffalo Junction and Patricia D. Sache of Fullerton, Calif.; a sister, Peggy Bishop of Payson, Ariz.; and several grandchildren.
Watkins Cooper Lyon Funeral Home of Clarksville is in charge of arrangements.

Claude "Sunny" Farmer

Claude Herman "Sunny" Farmer, 58, 192 Kentuck Road, died Friday, Dec. 20, 1996, in Danville Regional Medical Center.
Born March 26, 1938, in Pittsylvania County, he was a son of Herman Farmer and Mary Gunn Farmer, who survives.
In addition to his mother of Danville, survivors include two daughters, Marilyn Jones of Danville and Donna Chappelle of San Francisco; three brothers, Walter Farmer and William Farmer, both of Danville, and James Farmer of Wilmington, Del.; three sisters, Annie Graves of Danville, Viola Woodson and Mary Lee Meade, both of Delaware; and five grandchildren.
The funeral will be conducted noon Thursday from Bethel Baptist Church by the Rev. Thomas Johnson. Burial will be in the church cemetery.
Fisher and Watkins Funeral Home is in charge of arrangements.
