Mrs. Elsie Lilly Davenport, 82, passed away on March 20, 2001. Mrs. Davenport is survived by two daughters, Jewell D. Cowan, Richmond, Va., Jamie D. Dye, Bristol, Va.; and a granddaughter, Dawn M. Cowan, Auburn, Ala. Mrs. Essie Wood Falk, born August 12, 1904, passed away Tuesday, March 20, 2001 in Richmond, Va. Mrs. Falk, formerly of Columbus, Ga., was the widow of Albion J. Falk. She is survived by two daughters, Mary Trawick Calder and husband, Vaughan of Richmond, Va. and Lillian Trawick Hart and husband, John of Adrian, Mich.; nine grandchildren, 11 great-grandchildren; and her sister, Jeannette Simmons of Columbus. A long time faithful member of Eastern Heights Baptist Church, Mrs. Falk was also a member of The United Daughters of the Confederacy and former Worthy Matron of Columbus #261 of The Order of the Eastern Star. A graveside memorial service will be held on Saturday at 11 a.m. at Park Hill Cemetery. Contributions may be made to the Eastern Heights Baptist Church Building Fund. Brown Fleming of 2913 Magnus Lane, formerly of Scott Road, departed this life March 20, 2001. She was preceded in death by her husband, Rev. Dr. Emmett Lloyd Fleming Sr., former pastor of Sixth Baptist Church and Morning Star Baptist Church, Burrowsville, Va. Surviving are three sons, Dr. Emmett L. Fleming Jr. of Fredericksburg, Va., Major F. Fleming Sr. and Gerald A. Fleming of Richmond, Va.; one daughter, Winona Fleming Holmes of Richmond, Va.; seven grandchildren; two daughters-in-law, Mary C. and Terry Fleming; one son-in-law, Harry J. Holmes III; three sisters-in-law, Nora and Jeanette Fleming, and Elizabeth Lash; three brothers-in-law, George Haskell, Walter Lash Sr. and Franklin Fleming Sr.; host of nieces, nephews, cousins, other relatives and friends. Louise W. Flora went home to her Lord Thursday, March 22, 2001. She was preceded in death by her husbands, George Fenton Knight and Benjamin F. Flora. She is survived by her daughter, Jacqueline Knight Nauman and her husband, Charles J.; her granddaughter, Denise Mangum Walker and her husband, Gordon L.; three great-grandchildren, Kayleigh, Grayson and Preston; one sister, Georgia Mae Lanier; a niece, Chris Quigley; and a nephew, Roger Lanier. Mrs. Flora was a devoted, lifelong member of Calvary United Methodist Church. Her remains rest at the Nelsen Funeral Home, 4650 S. Dorothy W. "Dotie" Gregory, 77, of Richmond, died March 21, 2001. She is survived by two sons, David and Ronald Gregory; two daughters, Linda Kernell of Kansas and Cynthia Gregory; two sisters, Regina Warren and Estelle Brockwell; brother, Leslie Weatherford; seven grandchildren, six great-grandchildren. Mr. David Kennedy Hewett, age 55, of McKinney, Texas, passed away on March 20, 2001, at his residence. He was born on July 1, 1945, to Oscar K. and Alberta (Clendaniel) Hewett Jr. in Baltimore, Md. He married Carol Tullis on August 1, 1970, in Fort Myers, Fla. Mr. Hewett was vice president of marketing and sales at Ramquest Software. He was a 1967 graduate of the U.S.M.A. at West Point and attained an MBA at Northwestern University. He was in the U.S. Army and served in Korea, The Old Guard and Vietnam. Mr. Hewett was of the Protestant faith. He is survived by his wife of 30 years, Carol Hewett of McKinney, Texas; daughter, Dawn Hewett of Ft. Lauderdale, Fla.; and sister, Sue Wyatt of Richmond, Va. Mr. Hewett was preceded in death by his parents. A memorial service will be held at 4 p.m. Saturday, March 24, 2001, at Turrentine-Jackson-Morrow Chapel in McKinney, Texas. Mrs. Evelyn B. Houston, 89, of Mt. Pleasant, Md., died Wednesday, March 21, 2001 at her home. She was the wife of the late Ryland W. Houston, who died in 1982. Born April 17, 1911 in Caroline County, she was the daughter of the late Evelyn S. and Edwin Beazley. She was a lifelong member of Bethel United Church in Hanover and a member of the Frederick Chapter No. 79, Order of the Eastern Star. She is survived by her daughter, Mary W. McDowell and her husband, John H. of Mt. Pleasant, Md.; three grandchildren, Ginger Remsberg and her husband, Doug, John R. McDowell and his wife, Dawn and Melissa R. Hoffman and her husband, Robert; four great-grandchildren and four great-great-grandchildren. Mrs. Houston was preceded in death by her granddaughter, Evelyn C. McDowell in 1962. An Eastern Star service was held 7:30 p.m. Thursday in Maryland. The family will receive friends 6 to 8 p.m. Friday at Reid Funeral Home, 412 S. Ann Sweeney Miller, 83, of Richmond, Va., born September 4, 1917 in El Paso, Texas, died March 20, 2001 at her daughter's residence in Waxhaw, N.C. Ann Miller was the wife of Col. Raymond O. Miller. Her steadfast partnership throughout his military and civilian careers played a pivotal role in uplifting the family and the communities, which she served. As an Army wife, she was dedicated to the care and needs of families serving with her. She was an active leader and community volunteer. While she was a talented violinist, artist, and bridge player, her greatest talent was in sharing her love. Mrs. Miller was preceded in death by her husband, Col. Raymond O. Miller; her parents, Dr. John T.R. Sweeney and Effie Tolbert Sweeney; one son, Raymond O. Miller Jr.; and her sister, Anita Sweeney. She is survived by her children, Patricia Hodges of Waxhaw, N.C., Charles Miller of Broken Arrow, Okla., Phyllis McDonald of Acworth, Ga. and Linda Root of O'Fallon, Ill.; her sister, Frances Curle of Richmond; nine grandchildren, Samuel, Deborah, Christina, Scott, Andrew, Aric, Jennifer, Celeste and Craig; daughter-in-law, Maurice Miller; son-in-law, Frank McDonald; and two great-grandchildren, Darby and Aidan. Rev. James Harvey Nichols Jr., 82, of Lakewood Manor, passed away Wednesday, March 21, 2001. He is survived by his wife of 59 years, Evangeline W. Nichols; one son, Jay H. Nichols III and his wife, Cheryl of St. Louis, Mo.; three daughters, Carol Crouch and her husband, Ralph of Richmond, Anne Anthony and her husband, Ron of Baldwin, Md., and Beth Nichols of Richmond; two sisters, Lois Long of Tampa, Fla., and Virginia Ware of Lynchburg, Va.; three granddaughters, three grandsons and one great-grandson. Rev. Nichols, graduate of Lynchburg College and Southern Baptist Theological Seminary in Louisville, Ky., served three pastorates in Virginia: Bethel Baptist Church of Tabb, Va., Grundy Baptist Church of Grundy, Va., and National Gardens Baptist Church of Falls Church, Va., and served five interims. James Joseph O'Connell, died Wednesday, March 21, 2001. He is survived by his wife of 45 years, Margaret G. O'Connell; and a son, James Joseph O'Connell III and his wife, Jane Lee O'Connell; a granddaughter, Julia Hundley O'Connell, all of Richmond; a brother, Martin John O'Connell Sr. of Hackettstown, N.J. He was preceded in death by a brother, Thomas F. O'Connell. Mr. O'Connell was a member of the Knights of Columbus and a U.S. Navy veteran of the Korean Conflict.
