Charles W. Bradbury Sr., 89, of Powhatan, died September 21, 2002. He is survived by his wife, three children, two stepsons, and one grandson. The family will receive friends tonight from 7 to 9 p.m. at the Bennett & Barden Funeral Home, 3215 Anderson Hwy. (Rt. 60), Powhatan, and where services will be held Tuesday, 11 a.m. Interment Graceland Baptist Church Cemetery, Powhatan.

BROWN
Alfred L. (Bubba) Brown Jr. of Richmond went to be with the Lord on September 20, 2002. He was preceded in death by his daughter, Melody Brown. He is survived by his parents, Elver and Alfred L. Brown Sr.; his children, Mary West, Marilyn Brown, Alfred III, Alfred and Deaundra Shepperson; sisters, Beatrice B. Alston, Jeraldine McClide, and Jeralann Enzor, all of Paterson, N.J., and Mildred Brown; brothers, Wendel Coleman, James and Frank Brown; a longtime devoted friend, Kristal Wilson; a host of grandchildren, other relatives and friends. Remains rest at the Carlton T. Brooks Funeral Home, 2200 Hull Street, where family will receive friends Monday 7 to 8 p.m. Funeral services will be conducted Tuesday, 1 p.m. at Mt. Calvary Baptist Church, 9881 Stroud Lane, where remains will lie in state one hour prior to service, Rev. Richard S. Johnson officiating. Interment church cemetery. Family and friends attending service assemble 12:30 p.m. at the church.

CAUTHORNE
Willie V. Cauthorne Sr. of Ashland passed away at his home Sunday, September 22, 2002. He was preceded in death by his father, Bernice Lee Cauthorne. He is survived by his wife, Mildred Cauthorne; two sons, Sam Cauthorne and Carl Cauthorne and his wife, Bettie; a brother, Ernest "Pete" Cauthorne and his wife, Carol; a stepmother, Katherine Cauthorne; five grandchildren, four great-grandchildren; and a special friend of the family, Frank Baker. His remains rest at the Bliley Funeral Home's Staples Mill Chapel, 8510 Staples Mill Rd., where the family will receive friends 6 to 8 p.m. Monday and Tuesday, and where funeral services will be held 11 a.m. Wednesday. Interment Trinity Episcopal Church Cemetery, Beaverdam, Va. In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to the Willie V. Cauthorne Sr. Scholarship Fund.

CHEATHAM
Frederick Carsino Cheatham Jr., formerly of Richmond, went home to be with God Wednesday, September 18, 2002. He was preceded in death by his wife, Grace Herman Cheatham. He is survived by his three children, Glynes and Frederick Cheatham III and Sandra C. Williams; nine grandchildren, among them one devoted, Randi Thomas; five great-grandchildren; three brothers, Wilfred, Franklin and Eugene; one sister, Gayzelle Atkins; devoted niece, Yvodne Herman; four sisters-in-law, three brothers-in-law, a host of other relatives and friends. Remains rest at Walter J. Manning Funeral Home, 700 N. 25th St. Remains will lie in state Tuesday, 10 a.m. at Great Hope Baptist Church, 2101 Venable St., where funeral services will be held at 11 a.m. Dr. Earl Bledsoe officiating. Burial Oakwood Cemetery. Family and friends kindly assemble at the funeral home Tuesday, 10:30 a.m.

CLAY
Jean Meredith Clay, age 80, of Lawrenceville, Va., died Saturday, September 21, 2002. She is survived by her daughters and sons-in-law, Carolyn Clay Oliver and Robert Oliver of Richmond, Susan Clay Nuckols and Cardwell C. Nuckols of Apopka, Fla. and Dr. Jean M. Clay of Williamsburg; her brother, William Massie Meredith of Richmond; and four grandsons, Mark Oliver of Afton, Justin Oliver of Washington, D.C., Clay Oliver of Richmond and Camden Nuckols of Apopka, Fla. The family will receive friends on Monday, September 23, at 506 Regents Crosse Lane, Apt. 4B, Richmond, between 7 and 9 p.m. Graveside services will be held at Oakwood Cemetery in Lawrenceville on Tuesday, September 24, at 2 p.m. In lieu of flowers, contributions may be made to Bon Secours Hospice, 8143 Staples Mill Rd., Richmond, Va. 23228-2751 or the Albertis Harrison Legacy Project, P.O. COSBY
Mamie Cosby, 89, of Richmond, died September 10, 2002. Graveside services will be held at 11 a.m. Tuesday, September 24 in Roselawn Memory Gardens. Arrangements by Central Chapel of Bennett Funeral Home.

COSTELLO
Arthur "Art" Costello, 87, of Kilmarnock, formerly of Strasburg, Va., died on September 21, 2002. He was born in Valcluse, Va. on May 23, 1915 to Mary Ellen and John Robert Costello. He was the youngest of 12 children. He retired in 1980, after 30 years, from Service Tire & Battery Co. in Front Royal, Va. He is survived by his wife of 66 years, Lillie Lichliter Costello; a daughter, Mary Ann Crane, with whom they have made their home for the past two years; a son, Glenn Costello of Manning, S.C.; five grandsons, and four great-grandchildren. There is one surviving sister, Effie Kilmer, age 95, of Martinsburg, W.Va. Visitation will be Monday between 7 and 9 p.m. at the Currie Funeral Home and the funeral service will be Tuesday at 1 p.m. at the Kilmarnock Baptist Church, with interment in the Woodlawn Cemetery. In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be made to the American Cancer Association or the Music Department at Kilmarnock Baptist Church.

COUSINS
Margaret F. Cousins, 96, of Varina, died Sunday, September 22, 2002. She is survived by her niece, June Holmes; and her nephew, Lawrence Cousins; one great-niece, Stephanie Ashworth; three great-nephews, William Holmes Jr., Robert Holmes and Alan Cousins Jr.; four great-great-nieces, and five great-great-nephews. Mrs. Cousins was a lifelong member of Laurel Hill United Methodist Church and a member of the United Methodist Woman's Club. Remains rest at the Nelsen Funeral Home, 4650 South Laburnum Ave., where the family will receive friends 6 to 8 p.m. Monday, and 2 to 4 and 6 to 8 p.m. Tuesday, and where services will be held 11 a.m. Wednesday. CUMMINGS
Dr. Charles E. Cummings Sr. of 3007 Brook Road, died Friday, September 20, 2002. Surviving are his devoted wife, Mary Quash Cummings; two sons, Charles E. Cummings Jr. and Kevin A. Cummings; two grandchildren, Cori and Kai Cummings; one sister, Virginia A. Stewart; one aunt, Narcissus Orange; one daughter-in-law, Michelle Cummings; numerous nieces and nephews, other relatives and friends. Dr. Cummings retired from practicing medicine after 37 years. His remains rest at Scott's Funeral Home, 115 E. Brookland Park Blvd., where the family will receive friends Monday from 6 to 8 p.m. After 10 a.m. Tuesday his remains will rest in Coburn Chapel at Virginia Union University, 1500 N. Lombardy Street, where funeral services will be held at 12 noon, Rev. Dr. Alfred Smith officiating. Entombment Forest Lawn Mausoleum. In lieu of flowers, contributions may be made to Dr. Charles and Mary Q. Cummings Scholarship Fund at Virginia Union University.

ELLIS
Mr. Thomas Berkley Ellis Sr., 54, of Mechanicsville, died on September 20, 2002. He was preceded in death by his parents, Leonard and Ester Ellis; and his brothers, Brady Ellis and Prescott Mooty. He is survived by his wife, Veronique A. Ellis; two children, Melisa L.E. Sirles and her husband, Shannon and Berk Ellis and his wife, Blair; two stepchildren, David A. and Christopher Joseph Dallaglio; three brothers, Stewart and Lennie Ellis and Dever Carr; one sister, Beverley Fowler; and four grandchildren, Tyler and Darianne Sirles and Samantha and Sydney Ellis. Tom was a loving husband, father and grandfather, he was a member of the National Amputee Golf Association winning several championships, he had won an Emmy while with NBC Sports and was an SKA professional Kingfish angler. A memorial service will be held 3 p.m. Tuesday at the Bliley Funeral Home's Staples Mill Chapel, 8510 Staples Mill Rd. In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be made to the American Diabetes Association or the American Heart Fund.

GRIMES
Dorothy Hall Grimes, 86, formerly of the 1100 block of Stewart St., died September 22, 2002 in Richmond. A native of Norfolk, she was the daughter of the late Frank Winston and Minnie Louise Goodwin Hall and the wife of the late Vernon Carlyle Grimes Sr. She was the retired operator of Grimes Store, a member of the First Presbyterian Church of South Norfolk, and a member of the Woman's Club of South Norfolk. She is survived by a daughter, Dorothy Aksamit of Lodi, Calif.; two sons, Vernon Carlyle Grimes Jr. and his wife, Diane of Nashville, N.C. and Phillip Edward Grimes and his wife, Janet of Midlothian, Va.; a brother, Frank Holton Hall of Chesapeake; a sister-in-law, Lucille Miles of Virginia Beach; nine grandchildren, and 13 great-grandchildren. A graveside service will be held Tuesday at 1 p.m. in Riverside Memorial Park. The family will receive friends at Graham Funeral Home, South Norfolk Chapel, on Tuesday from 11 a.m. to 12 Noon. Memorial contributions may be made to the First Presbyterian Church of South Norfolk, 1605 Bainbridge Boulevard, Chesapeake, Va. 23324 or Alzheimer's Association, 20 Interstate Corporate Center, Suite 233, Norfolk, Va. 23502. Departed this life September 14, 2002, Chris D. Harris of 3515 McGuire Drive. He is survived by his mother, Gertrude Harris; two sisters, Dianne Milner and Brenda H. Burt; one aunt, Katherine Moore; two uncles, Thomas F. Ross and Richard T. Moore; one niece, Nicole Milner; and one nephew, Dyric Burt; several cousins, one devoted, Michael Davis; one brother-in-law, Edmond Burt; and other relatives and friends. Remains rest at Joseph Jenkins Jr. Funeral Home, 2011 Grayland Avenue, where funeral services will be held 11 a.m. Tuesday, Rev. Mark Bectoy officiating. Interment Quantico National Cemetery. LEMONDS
Elvin "Sonny" J. Lemonds Jr., 41, passed away on Saturday, September 21, 2002. Sonny was a native and lifelong peninsula resident. He attended Poquoson High School and was owner and operator of American High Pressure Systems for 16 years. He was preceded in death by his father, Elvin J. Lemonds Sr.; and is survived by his mother, and stepfather, Pauline and Peter Thayer of Richmond, Va.; three sisters, Wanda Rosson and her husband, Randy of Yorktown, Nancy Vacek and her husband, Jamie, and Peggy Fishbeck and her husband, Donald, all of Richmond, Texas; a special aunt, Shirley Lemonds of Yorktown, Va.; and four nieces, and four nephews. A funeral service will be held Tuesday, September 23, 2002, at 2 p.m. in Amory Funeral Home Chapel by Rev. Ron Eason. Burial will follow in Peninsula Memorial Park. The family will receive friends Monday 7 to 8:30 p.m. in the funeral home.

Frances C. Lyles, 73, of Powhatan, died September 22, 2002. She is survived by her husband, Gary Lyles; two sons, Bobby Lyles and his wife, Teresa of Powhatan, Bruce Lyles of Richmond; four brothers, Aubrey Condrey, Harold Condrey, James Condrey, all of Powhatan, Elmer Condrey of Amelia; two sisters, Hazel Worsham, Doris Palmore, both of Powhatan; one stepsister, Ruby Lent of Richmond; one granddaughter, Erica Morrison; and one great-granddaughter, Olivia Morrison, both of Powhatan. The family will receive friends tonight from 7 to 9 p.m. at the Bennett & Barden Funeral Home, 3215 Anderson Hwy. (Rt. 60), Powhatan. Funeral services will be held Tuesday, 3 p.m., in the Graceland Baptist Church, Powhatan. Interment church cemetery.

MUMFORD
Helen Beckwith Mumford, 90, of Midlothian, died Saturday evening, September 21, 2002 in University Park Healthcare, Richmond. She was born in Troy, N.C. and was a former resident of West Broadway in Hopewell. Mrs. Mumford was a member of the Crestwood Presbyterian Church, Richmond, the Woman's Club of Hopewell, Adah Chapter #7, Order of the Eastern Star, a retired registered nurse at John Randolph Medical Center, and served as a board member of the American Cancer Society. She was preceded in death by her parents, Junies Calvin and Lola Allen Beckwith; her husband, Graves Roberson Mumford; and a son, George R. Mumford Sr. Surviving are a son, Graves R. Mumford Jr. and wife, Ann of Midlothian; four grandchildren, George R. Mumford Jr., Karen M. Grove, Jennifer M. Hornsby, and Pamela M. Kenney; eight great-grandchildren; and a sister, Alice B. Moore of Hopewell. The family will receive friends Tuesday, September 24, 2002 at the Hopewell Chapel of J.T. Morriss & Son Funeral Home from 7 to 8:30 p.m. A funeral service will be held Wednesday, September 25, 2002 at 11 a.m. in the funeral home chapel, with the Rev. Dr. John Daniel, pastor of Crestwood Presbyterian Church, officiating. Interment will be in Bermuda Memorial Park, Chesterfield County. NACHMAN
Marilyn M. Nachman, 67, of Virginia Beach, passed away September 21, 2002. Mrs. Nachman is survived by her husband, Donald; son, Mark and wife, Carolyn, and their daughter, Ricki of Virginia Beach; son, Jay of Philadelphia, Pa.; son, Eric and wife, Andrea, and their children, Max, Benjamin, and Eliana of Richmond; and son, Brad and wife, Laura, and their children, Macy and Fletcher of Havertown, Pa.; and a sister, Polly Marks of Chesapeake. Born January 11, 1935 in Watertown, N.Y., she was the daughter of Ben and Rhea Marks. She graduated from Watertown High School, and from Erie County Technical Institute, now known as Erie College. She worked for many years as a dental hygienist and retired from Boone Clinic, Naval Amphibious Base. She had served on the boards of Beth Sholom Home, Beth Sholom Sands, Jewish Family Service, Temple Israel, and as treasurer of the Tidewater Chapter of the Brandeis University National Women's Committee. She was a member and supporter of many organizations, including B'nai Brith, Hadassah, Hebrew Ladies Society, and the Peninsula Jewish Historical Society, and was a volunteer for the "Be A Reader" Literacy Project of the United Jewish Federation of Tidewater. Contributions can be made to the Hebrew Academy of Tidewater, 1244 Thompkins Lane, Virginia Beach, Va. 23464, or to the Pulmonary Fibrosis Foundation, 1440 West Washington Blvd., Chicago, Ill. 60607. A funeral will be held Tuesday, 2 p.m., at Temple Israel, 7255 Granby Street, Norfolk, Va. The family will receive condolence calls at their residence this week and Shiva will be observed Sunday evening, September 29, following Sukkot. Altmeyer Funeral Home, Virginia Beach is in charge of arrangements.

James Bernard Pace Sr., 93, of Fork Union, died September 22, 2002 in the Village Nursing Center. He was born January 14, 1909 in Fluvanna County, son of the late James and Nora Newton Pace. He was preceded in death by his wife of 63 years, Bernice Lewis Pace; one son, Kenneth Wayne Pace; and one sister, Marie Wells. He is survived by three sons, James B. Pace Jr. of Fork Union, Carl Edward Pace of Goochland, Ralph Alec Pace of Newport News; six daughters, Jane Bauserman of Orleans, Doris Lauffenburger of Harrisonburg, Patsy Haney of Ruckersville, Debbie Payne of Troy, Darlene Payne of Palmyra, Wanda Bourne of Troy; 20 grandchildren, and six great-grandchildren. The family will receive friends from 7 to 8:30 p.m. Tuesday at the Sheridan Funeral Home, Kents Store. Funeral services will be Wednesday, 11 a.m., at the Memorial Baptist Church, Columbia, Va., with interment to follow in the church cemetery. The Rev. Donald Holberg will officiate.
