MERCER
Costella Jones Mercer of Richmond entered into eternal rest Thursday, December 27, 2001. She was a watchcare member of St. John Baptist Church, North Ave., Richmond. She leaves a son, Harold Jefferson Jr. (Debra); two daughters, Varie Jordan (Kelvin), both of Petersburg and Florence Saunders (Kenneth) of Washington, D.C.; her mother, Mable Jones of Dewitt, Va.; a granddaughter, two grandsons, two great-grandchildren; three sisters, Ernestine Williams (Henry) and Jean Gilliam, both of Petersburg and Sharon Myrick of Dewitt; an aunt, Alfreda Hicks of Petersburg; an uncle, Gerald Ellis of Dinwiddie; other relatives and friends. Funeral services will be 2 p.m. Sunday, December 30, 2001 at Tabernacle Baptist Church, Petersburg with interment at Mt. Calvary Baptist Church Cemetery, Dewitt. Viewing will be Saturday at Shirley P. Johnson Funeral Home, 451 Halifax St., Petersburg. The family will receive relatives and friends at the residence of her daughter and son-in-law, Varie and Kelvin Jordan, at 2511 Fort Lee Rd., Petersburg and can be contacted at (804) 861-8589. The family will assemble at 1 p.m. the day of the service. Services entrusted to the staff of the Joseph M. Johnson & Son Funeral Home, McKenney, 478-4411.

MOTLEY
Carmen Young Motley, 89, of Midlothian, widow of Vann P. Motley Sr., a retired registered nurse from the Veterans Hospital, passed away December 28, 2001. She is survived by her son, V. Peyton Motley Jr. and his wife, Gayle of Midlothian; brother, Reverend Dailey D. Young of Churchville, Va.; three grandchildren, Robbyne and her husband, Mike Sayer, Trevor and Megan Motley; one great-granddaughter, Elizabeth Sayer. Mrs. Motley was a member of Forest Hill Presbyterian Church, a life member of Forest View Volunteer Rescue Squad Auxiliary and a U.S. Navy veteran of WWII. The family will receive friends Sunday from 4 to 6 p.m. at the Huguenot Chapel, Woody Funeral Home, 1020 Huguenot Rd., where services will be held Monday 11 a.m. Entombment Greenwood Memorial Gardens Mausoleum. In lieu of flowers, the family requests donations be made to the Forest View Volunteer Rescue Squad.

NIEMANN
Mr. William B. Niemann passed away on December 19, 2001. He was preceded in death by his wife, Rose DeMarco Niemann and is survived by four children, William Walter Niemann and his wife, Margaret and their daughter, Mindy, Anthony "Tony" Niemann and his sons, Michael and Anthony, Alan Peter Niemann and his wife, Vicky and their daughter, Sierra and his daughter, Cyra "CC" Niemann. Private services will be held at a later date.

PAULEY
Departed this life December 26, 2001, Mr. William H. "Chip" "June" Pauley Jr. of Richmond. Remains rest at Walter J. Manning Funeral Home, 700 North 25th Street. Funeral notice later.

Bessie B. Price, 72, departed this life December 26, 2001. She is survived by two sisters, Elsie Fleming and Florine Thompson; three brothers, Hermon, George and Elder Howard Hill; two brothers-in-law; seven sisters-in-law; a host of nieces, nephews, other relatives and friends. Her remains rest at the Henry W. Dabney Funeral Home, 518 N. Washington Hwy., Ashland. Funeral services 2 p.m. Sunday at the Refuge Church of Our Lord Jesus Christ, Dawn, Va. Elder Howard L. READE
Frances Gaynelle Hall Reade, 67, of Richmond, died December 28, 2001. She was the widow of Clyde B. Reade and is survived by her son, Michael Hall and his wife, Nancy; her grandson, Samuel; three brothers, Douglas and Charles Hall and Ronald Hall Sr. and his wife, Judy; three nieces, two nephews, two stepdaughters and one stepson. Her remains rest at the Bliley Funeral Home's Central Chapel, 3801 Augusta Ave., where the family will receive friends 6 to 8 p.m. Sunday and where services will be held 11 a.m. Monday. Interment Westhampton Memorial Park. Mrs. Reade was recently retired as a long-time employee of Public Finance.

ROBINSON
Maybelle M. Robinson, 81, of 1611 Fourth Ave. Apt. 521, and formerly of Fayetteville, N.C., entered eternal rest Thursday, December 27, 2001. Her husband, Sam Robinson, preceded her in death. She is survived by one sister, Dora May McDougald of Fayetteville, N.C.; one devoted cousin, Theodore (June) Patterson; two devoted adopted grandchildren, Angela and John Fitzgerald; and one adopted great-grandson, John Fitzgerald III, and a host of other relatives and friends. Maybelle was a member of Greater Mt. Moriah Baptist Church, 913 N. 1st St., where she was a faithful member and served on the usher board. She was also an active member of the Foster Grandparent Program for the Senior Connections Capital Area Agency on Aging. In lieu of flowers, the family requests that memorials be made to the YWCA-Women's Advocacy Program, 6 North Fifth Street, Richmond, Va. 23219. Funeral services will be held on Monday, December 31, 12 noon at Mt. Hebrew Baptist Church, Fayetteville, N.C. Burial will follow in the church cemetery. Expressions of sympathy may be sent in care of Angela W. Fitzgerald, 3312 Lynhaven Avenue, Richmond, Va. 23234. Local arrangements are entrusted to the care of Scott's Funeral Home, 115 E. Brookland Park Blvd. Upon arrival in Fayetteville, N.C. her remains will rest at the Cunningham & Sons Funeral Home, 3809 Raeford Road.

SALDANA
Frank Saldana, 64, of Richmond, died December 26, 2001. Survivors include his wife, Charlotte W. Saldana; six children, Christy, Renee, Nile, Tonia, Marc and Scott; two sisters, Annie Fuentes and Ramona Saldana; and 10 grandchildren. Mr. Saldana was a veteran of the U.S. Army, 101st Airborne. His remains rest at the Bliley Funeral Home's Chippenham Chapel, 6900 Hull Street Rd., where the family will receive friends from 5 to 7 p.m. Friday. Graveside services will be held 2 p.m. Saturday at Dale Memorial Park.

SHINN
Richard "Dick" Shinn, age 79, of Bristol, Tenn., died Thursday, December 27, 2001 in Richmond, Va. He was a lifelong resident of Bristol, the son of the late Oscar and Ada Byrd Shinn. He was preceded in death by his wife, Geraldine Coles Shinn, in 1997. Survivors include two daughters and sons-in-law, Cindy and Powell Moore, Raleigh, N.C. and Becky and Ben Turner, Richmond, Va.; son and daughter-in-law, Mike R. and Audrey Shinn, Hendersonville, Tenn.; one sister and five grandchildren. A Funeral Mass will be conducted at 5 p.m. Sunday, December 30, 2001 in St. Anne's Catholic Church, Bristol, Va. STASKIEL
Eva Piersa Staskiel, age 77, of Barhamsville, Va., died Thursday, December 27, 2001. She was a member of Our Lady of Blessed Sacrament Catholic Church and VFW Post 8356 Women's Auxiliary. Her husband, Zigmont Roger Staskiel, preceded her in death. She is survived by two daughters, Margaret and her husband, Richard Mountcastle and Katherine Crump, all of Barhamsville; two sons, Roger Staskiel of Barhamsville and Mike and his wife, Liz Staskiel of Stafford; two sisters, Esther Seckora and Anna Kozlowski, both of West Point; seven grandchildren and two great-grandchildren. A Funeral Mass will be held Monday 11 a.m. at Our Lady of the Blessed Sacrament Catholic Church, West Point, Va. Burial will be in St. John of Kanti Cemetery, Barhamsville, Va. A Christian Vigil will be held Sunday 7 p.m. at Vincent Funeral Home, West Point, Va. Memorials may be made to James City Volunteer Rescue Squad, Box 321, Toano, Va. 23168.

TAYLOR
Lester E. Taylor, 64, of Bowling Green, died Friday, December 28, 2001. Survivors include his wife, Lois J. Taylor of Williamstown, Pa.; two daughters, Karen Taylor and Lisa Wells, both of Williamstown, Pa.; three sisters, devoted sister, Linda Martin, Barbara Beazley and Dale Alford, all of Bowling Green; five brothers, Paul, Curtis and Herbert Taylor, all of Bowling Green, James and William Taylor, both of Mechanicsville; four grandchildren; three devoted aunts, Joyce Clark, Margaret Smith and Edith Pitts; and a devoted cousin, Nancy Martin. Funeral services will be Sunday, December 30, 2001 at 2 p.m. in Storke Funeral Home, Bowling Green. Burial will follow in Mt. Hermon Cemetery.

TRICE
Virginia Brown Trice of Richmond died on December 28, 2001 at the age of 78 after a long illness. Mrs. Trice was the daughter of Mr. and Mrs. John Dorsey Brown and a graduate of St. Catherine's School. She was the wife of Dr. E. Randolph Trice. Mrs. Trice was a lifelong member of St. James's Episcopal Church where she was president of The Women of the Church. She was also a member of the National Society of Colonial Dames in the Commonwealth of Virginia and The Woman's Club. She was a former member of The Junior League of Richmond and The Country Club of Virginia. She is survived by her husband; her sisters, Mary Meek Semler of Brooklin, Maine and Cabell Roome of Northampton, Mass.; her children, Wilson R. Trice, Mary Palmer Legare and William Cabell Trice; and her grandchildren, Lile Tucker Trice and Mary Mason Trice. A memorial service will be held at 11 a.m. on Monday, December 31, 2001, at St. James's Episcopal Church. The family suggests that, in lieu of flowers, contributions be made to the St. James's Church Endowment Fund, 1205 West Franklin Street, Richmond, Va. 23220.

VAUGHN
Margaret Hoyt Vaughn, 90, of Richmond, died on December 26, 2001. A retired high school art teacher, she was the daughter and granddaughter of Methodist ministers and devoted wife of Norman M. Vaughn, who died in 1991. She is survived by her two sons and daughters-in-law, David H. and Carmen R. Vaughn of Northport, N.Y. and the Reverend Dr. Peter M. and Carole H. Vaughn of Richmond, Va.; two grandsons and a granddaughter-in-law, Douglas S. Vaughn of Northport, N.Y. and Dr. Mark E. and Michelle P. Vaughn of Richmond, Va.; and a great-granddaughter, Carter A. Vaughn of Richmond, Va. A memorial service of Death and Resurrection will be held on Sunday, December 30, at 3:30 p.m. at Welborne United Methodist Church, 920 Maybeury Drive, Richmond, Va. 23233, with The Reverend Marc D. Brown and The Reverend Dr. Earle W. Paylor Jr. presiding. Memorial contributions may be made to Welborne United Methodist Church. As in baptism she put on Christ, so in Christ may she be clothed with glory.

VELLEKAMP
Ethel M. Vellekamp, 77, of Quinton, departed this life on Friday, December 28, 2001. She was preceded in death by her husband, Robert H. Vellekamp and is survived by her children, Deborah Vellekamp and Judy V. Thomas and her son-in-law, James A. Thomas Jr. After retiring from Philip Morris, her love for alpacas led her to the origination of her business, Winter Song Alpacas. A memorial service will be held 2 p.m. Saturday at the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints, 8005 Atlee Rd., Mechanicsville. The family will receive friends on Sunday, December 30 from 2 to 4 p.m. at the Laburnum Chapel, Woody Funeral Home, 2110 East Laburnum Ave. Interment 9:30 a.m. Monday at Quantico National Cemetery. In lieu of flowers, contributions may be made to the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints Missionary Work, c/o William Lund, 5110 Coxson Rd., Richmond, Va. 23231.

WHITEHOUSE
Arlene Taylor Whitehouse, age 101, died Thursday, December 27, 2001. She is the mother of Frank E. Whitehouse. Arrangements are pending at the West Chapel of Bennett Funeral Home, 11020 West Broad St., Glen Allen.

WOOTEN
Cora Lea Wooten, 74, of Richmond, died Thursday, December 27, 2001. She is survived by her husband, John Wooten; eight children, Albert, Raymond, Thomas, Charles, Gary, Dale, Patricia and Diannia; 22 grandchildren; and several great-grandchildren. Her remains rest at the Bliley Funeral Home's Chippenham Chapel, 6900 Hull Street Rd., where the family will receive friends Saturday and Sunday from 6 to 8 p.m. Graveside services will be held 11 a.m. Monday at Dale Memorial Park.

ALLEN

ALTICE
George Buford Altice, 83, of Chesterfield, passed away Saturday, September 21, 2002. He is survived by his wife of 57 years, Mildred; children, Cheryl Compton and her husband, Glenn, LaDon Altice, Candace Altice, Lana Lefferts and her husband, Terry, Daphne Amos and her husband, Bob, Gregory Altice and his wife, Judy, Galen Altice, Dwayne Altice and his wife, Faye, Danny Altice; and his chosen adopted daughter, Janet Jourdan; a brother, Billy C. Altice and his wife, Everlene; a sister-in-law, Patsy Robertson; 21 grandchildren, 20 great-grandchildren, numerous nieces and nephews. Mr. Altice was a veteran of WWII. His remains rest at the Bliley Funeral Home's Chippenham Chapel, 6900 Hull Street Road, where the family will receive friends 6 to 8 p.m. Monday and Tuesday, and where funeral services will be held 11 a.m. Wednesday. Interment Dale Memorial Park.

BAYLOR
Jane Leola Baylor (Lindy), 74, of Goochland, Va., departed this life Friday, September 20, 2002. She is survived by her loving husband, Michael L. Baylor; six children, six grandchildren and five great-grandchildren. The family will receive friends Tuesday, September 24 from 6 to 7 p.m. (tonight) at the Mealy's Funeral Home. Funeral services Wednesday, September 25 at the Kingdom Hall of Jehovah's Witnesses (Rt. 45) at 12 noon. Elder George Wilkes presiding. Interment Goochland Memorial Gardens. Robert Mealy Funeral Home, 2530 Dogtown Rd., Goochland, Va. in charge of arrangements.
