COX
Julia K. Cox, 81, of Southern Shores, N.C., passed away on June 2, 2002. Julia was born on October 22, 1920 in Philadelphia, Pa. to Mary Hertzler Kilpatrick and Milligan C. Kilpatrick. She graduated from Glen Allen High School in Richmond, Va. in 1938 and James Madison University in 1942 where she earned her Bachelor of Arts degree. While attending Madison, she was editor of the college newspaper, "The Breeze." Mrs. Cox served in the U.S. Navy in the rank of Lieutenant junior grade from 1943 to 1945 as a communications officer where she met her husband, William E. Cox. They were married October 18, 1945. Mrs. Cox was employed by The Bank of Virginia in Richmond for 18 years where she was the first female vice president of the bank. She and her husband moved to Southern Shores from Richmond in the early 1970's. She was a member of the Duck Woods Club since 1979. She also was a member of the Southern Shores Civic Association since its inception where she served as chairman during the early years of that organization. Mrs. Cox was preceded in death by her husband, William E. Cox. Survivors include Jeff Cox and his wife, Maggie of Southern Shores, and Anita Foster of Williamsburg, Va; grandchildren, Colin Cox of Kill Devel Hills and Nicholas, Joshua and Thomas Foster of Williamsburg, Va. Graveside services will be held in the Southern Shores Cemetery on Friday, June 7, 2002 at 11 a.m. In lieu of flowers, donations to the Dare County Hospice, P.O. Box 1000, Manteo, N.C. 27954, would be appreciated. Twiford's Colony Chapel, Manteo is handling arrangements.

DeVOE
John R. DeVoe was born January 23, 1926 in Norwalk, Ohio and went to a better life June 1, 2002 in San Antonio, Texas. John retired after 20 years in the U.S. Army, serving in WWII, Korea and Vietnam in the 35th Infantry Division. He received the Purple Heart. John then spent 15 years with the Henrico County, Va. Sheriff's Department, retiring as Captain. He was a member of the Fraternal Order of Police and the American Legion. Survivors include his wife of 10 years, Flor de Maria DeVoe; daughters, Janet Nolan, Joni McKeen and her husband, Thomas, Julie Ginn and her husband, Rodney, Jacquelyn Hayes and her husband, Bernard and Jennifer Gandy; Flor de Maria's children, Ney Alberto Zuniga, Amilkar Zuniga, Jose Zuniga, Jerry Zuniga and Angie Zuniga; 22 grandchildren; two great-grandchildren; and his very special friend, Chuck Breedlove. Visitation 6 to 8 p.m. Wednesday, June 5, 2002 at Bradford-O'Keefe Funeral Home in Biloxi, Mississippi. Funeral service 10 a.m. Thursday at the funeral home. Interment with full military honors will follow in Biloxi National Cemetery.

DURRETTE
Lawrence B. Durrette died June 1, 2002. He was born May 9, 1922 in Caroline County to Lawrence B. Durrette and Earle Lillian Blanton. He is survived by his wife, Mildred C. Durrette; and stepsons, Robert M. Burns, Tucker, Ga. and Thomas J. Burns, Tega Cay, S.C. He was a longtime resident of Dinwiddie County and retired from Shoo Smith Brothers, Inc. A private memorial service was held on Monday, June 3. Memorial contributions may be made to the Crater Community Hospice, 840 West Roslyn Rd., Suite E, Colonial Heights, Va. 23834-3547.

ELLETT
Isabell Good Ellett, 92, wife of the late Upton D. Ellett, joined her husband on June 2, 2002. Born on September 27, 1909 and raised in Richmond, Va., she lived in Dunnsville, Va. until June 9, 1994 when she moved into the Masonic Home of Virginia. She was a member of Reville United Methodist Church. She is survived by her nephew, Dr. J.R. Good and wife, Katherine; five nieces, Martha Edmunds and her husband, Kieth of Roanoke, Jackie Legg, Linda Kinery, Carolyn Day and Nancy Rowe and her husband, Jack; several great-nieces and great-nephews. She was a member of the Essex County Woman's Club and the Chimboriza Woman's Club, Reville Church Choir and the Reville Woman's Society, Provettes, the Jolly Club and a Bridge Club. The family will receive friends from 12 to 2 p.m. at the Masonic Home of Virginia Chapel, where services will be held at 2 p.m. Interment Forest Lawn. In lieu of flowers, contributions may be made to the Masonic Home of Virginia, 4101 Nine Mile Rd., Richmond, Va. 23223. Woody Funeral Home, Laburnum Chapel, in charge of arrangements.

ELLIOTT
James Duke Elliott Sr., 74, of Richmond and Deltaville, Va., died Saturday, June 1, 2002. He is survived by his wife of 46 years, Carole Cook Elliott; two sons, James Duke Elliott Jr. and wife, Elizabeth Ziebe, and Hunter Walton Elliott and wife, Katherine Boniface; and a daughter, Mrs. Bruce Elliott Hammond and her husband, Richard Michael; six grandsons, James Duke Elliott III, Bryce Childress Elliott, Samuel Myrick Elliott, Robert Coleman Elliott, Saunders Buchanan Elliott and Trevor Walton Elliott; and two granddaughters, Elliott Lee Hammond and Rachel Windham Elliott; and one sister, Mrs. Myrtis Elliott Keppler of Sewanee, Tenn. Mr. Elliott was an Army veteran of WWII. He attended Virginia Polytechnic Institute. He was a member and former deacon and elder of Westminster Presbyterian Church. He was associated with the plumbing and heating industry for 38 years and retired from Taylor, Lipscomb and Appel, Inc. in 1989. He was a member of Fitzgerald Lodge 299, AF&AM, and the Westwood Club. The family will receive friends Tuesday from 2 to 4 and 6 to 8 p.m. at the Bliley Funeral Home's Central Chapel, 3801 Augusta Ave. A memorial service will be held Wednesday, 11 a.m. at Westminster Presbyterian Church, 4103 Monument Ave., Richmond, Va. 23230. Inurnment to follow in Greenwood Memorial Gardens. In lieu of flowers, memorial gifts may be made to Westminster Presbyterian Church.

EVANS
Dr. Cecil Franklin Evans Jr., died June 1, 2002 after a brief illness. Dr. Evans, a native of Poquoson, was born October 27, 1925 to Cecil Franklin and Birdie Carmines Evans. After service in the Navy during WWII, he attended The College of William and Mary and The Medical College of Virginia. He was a traditional solo family practice physician on the Peninsula for 37 years and had a reputation among colleagues as being the best diagnostician in the area. He served as the physician representative on the board of Riverside Hospital from 1985 thru 1987, and was a founding member and past President of the Virginia Review Organization. To his office staff and patients, he was simply the best. His retirement in 1991 gave him an opportunity to spend more time with family and pursue his interest in gardening, fishing and history. Dr. Evans is survived by his beloved wife of 52 years, Ruth Hubbard Evans; five daughters, Bronwyn Ruth Evans, Nancy Cecilia Clark Evans, Ann Saunders Evans and her husband, Richard Allan Byles, Gwyneth Lee Hubbard Evans Chapman and Tegwyn Mary Windor Evans; a sister, Jocelyn Evans Holloway; and his mother-in-law, Mary Clark Hubbard. Additionally, he is survived by five grandchildren, Evan and Spencer Williams, Rachel and Julianne Chapman and Robert Cecil Evans Byles; a nephew, James Holloway and his wife, Barbara; a niece, Linda Holloway; a special cousin, William Carmines and his wife, Mary Linda; and many cousins, nephews and nieces. His office staff, many of whom worked with him for most of his career, were a special part of his life. We will all miss him tremendously. Visitation will be Tuesday, June 4, 2002 from 6 to 8 p.m. at Peninsula Funeral Home, Newport News. Services will be held on Wednesday, June 5, 2002 at 12:30 pm at First United Methodist Church, Newport News. In lieu of flowers, contributions can be made to the Salvation Army, 1033 Big Bethel Road, Hampton, Va. 23666 or First United Methodist Church Building Fund, 10246 Warwick Blvd., Newport News, Va. 23601.

GAINES
Isabelle Wilson Gaines, 70, formerly of Richmond and Tappahannock, Va., passed away Friday, May 31, 2002 at her residence in Alexandria, Va. Cherishing her memories are her devoted husband, Ernest A. Gaines; one loving daughter, Renee Galloway; one son-in-law, Elbert Galloway of Richmond; two sisters-in-law, Mrs. Mildred Wilson of Hampton and Mrs. Leontine Wilson of Dunbar, West Virginia, and a host of other relatives and friends. Her remains rest at Scott's Funeral Home, 115 E. Brookland Park Blvd., where the family will receive friends Wednesday, June 5 from 7 to 8 p.m. After 10 a.m., Thursday June, 6, her remains will rest in First Baptist Church, Tappahannock, Va., where funeral services will be held at 11 a.m. Dr. Marion Tapscott officiating. GIRARD
Margaret Girard, 81, of Richmond, formerly of Fredericksburg, Va. and Sound Beach, N.Y., died June 1, 2002. Born September 2, 1920 in Manhatten, N.Y., she was retired from Iskra Electronics, Inc. and was also employed at Parade Publications, both in New York. She attended St. Mary's Catholic Church in Fredericksburg. Survived by two cousins, Peter F. Delfox and his wife, Karen Delfox of Kent Island, Md. and James G. Delfox and his wife, Karen E. Delfox of Rocky Point, N.Y. Visitation Wednesday, June 5 from 3 to 4:30 and 7 to 8:30 p.m. at Johnson Funeral Home, Locust Grove, Va. Graveside services will be held 10:30 a.m. June 6 at Oak Hill Cemetery, Fredericksburg. In lieu of flowers, contributions may be sent to Little Sisters of the Poor, St. Joseph's Home for the Aged, 1503 Michael Rd., Richmond, Va. 23220-4899.

Sandra Y. Gray of 3401 Danbury Road departed this life Sunday, June 2, 2002. Remains rest at the Mimms Funeral Home, 19th and Hull Sts. Funeral notice later.

HAYDEN
Francis Monroe Hayden, nickname "Buck", of Richmond died Sunday, June 2, 2002. He is survived by his wife, Barbara Jean Hayden; daughter, Jeannie Marie Hayden; granddaughter, Kaitlyn Hayden; stepson, Ricky Crigger; and many friends. Mr. Hayden was a union bricklayer for over forty years. A memorial service will be conducted 7 p.m. Tuesday at the Parham Chapel, Woody Funeral Home, 1771 Parham Rd. In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be made to the American Diabetes Association.

HOKE
Charles L. Hoke Sr., 87, died June 2, 2002. Survived by his wife, Hattie Powell Hoke of Alexandria, Va.; a son, Charles L. Hoke Jr. and wife, Celia of Washington, D.C. A graveside service will be held Thursday, June 6, 2002 at 2 p.m. in the Emporia Cemetery. The family suggests memorials in the form of contributions to the Greensville Volunteer Rescue Squad. HUDDLE
After a long courageous battle, Stuart Willard Huddle Jr., 38, of Chesterfield, found peace with the Lord on June 2, 2002. His memory will be cherished by his father and mother, Stuart and Brenda Huddle; his sister and brother-in-law, Stephanie and Michael Angelopulos; nephew and niece, Ryan and Madison Angelopulos; grandmother, Bertha Bell. Stuart was the honored godfather of Peyton Carter Worrell and was loved by many other relatives and friends. His remains rest at the Bliley Funeral Home's Chippenham Chapel, 6900 Hull Street Road, where the family will receive friends from 5 to 8 p.m. Tuesday, June 4. Funeral services and interment will be held at Chesterfield Baptist Church, 16520 Hull Street Road, Wednesday June 5 at 2 p.m. In lieu of flowers memorial contributions maybe made to Chesterfield Baptist Church Building Fund or to Hospice of Central Virginia.

JENKINS
Mervin Ellis (Hank) Jenkins departed this life Friday, May 31, 2002 at McGuire Veterans Hospital. He was born September 1, 1939 to the late Josephine and Robert L. Jenkins. He accepted Christ at an early age. He was educated from the Richmond Public Schools and graduated from Maggie L. Walker. He served in the U.S. Air Force from 1960-1965. He was united in holy matrimony to Ruth Fairley and to this union two sons were born, Gary and Barrick Jenkins; and one daughter, Rachelle Jenkins. He retired from Phillip Morris in 1993 after 24 years of service. Mervin opened up his heart as well as his home to many people. He leaves to cherish his memory Ms. Ruby F. Jenkins; two sons, Gary and Barrick Jenkins; one daughter, Rachelle Jenkins; one grandchildren; a devoted mother-in-law, Mary P. Fairley; three sisters, Helen Harris, Shirley Abraham and Wilnette Kirby; one daughter-in-law, three aunts, seven sisters-in-law, four brothers-in-law, 16 nephews, 12 nieces and a host of cousins, other relatives and friends. Remains rest at the Mimms Funeral Home, 19th and Hull Sts. Funeral services will be held Wednesday, June 5 at 1 p.m. at Second Baptist Church, 105 E. Pilkington St. Rev. Leroy Jones, interim pastor; Rev. Lawrence B. Samuel officiating. Interment in Maury Cemetery. After 12 noon Wednesday, remains will rest in the above named church until hour of service. Relatives and friends attending funeral services assemble at the church Wednesday at 12:30 p.m.

KEENER
Margaret C. Keener, 90, of Richmond, widow of Frank Keener, went to be with the Lord June 2, 2002. She was also preceded in death by her son, Robert F. Keener. She is survived by two sons, Dana G. Keener and his wife, Becky of Chesterfield and Ronald L. Keener and his wife, Rhoda of Weems; daughter-in-law, Brenda Keener of Chesterfield; sister, Alene Kersey Clarke of Richmond; also eight grandchildren and nine great-grandchildren. Mrs. Keener was a member of the Forest Hill Garden Club and the Westover Hills United Methodist Church. The family will receive friends Tuesday from 2 to 4 and 6 to 8 p.m. at the Huguenot Chapel, Woody Funeral Home, 1020 Huguenot Rd., where services will be held Wednesday 11 a.m. Interment Dale Memorial Park.

LIPSCOMB
Katherine Huckstep Lipscomb, 82, of Chester, went to be with the Lord on Monday, June 3, 2002. She was the widow of Garland Phillip Lipscomb and is survived by her daughters, Mary G. Storm of Santa Fe, N.M. and Katherine B. Lipscomb of Chester; grandsons, Christopher G. Garrett of Bend, Ore. and Louis O. "Chip" Storm III of Albuquerque, N.M. She was a retired secretary and library clerk with Chesterfield County Public Schools and was an active member of the "Village Voices." Katherine loved music, birds, flowers, and her beloved cat, Frankie. A memorial service for Mrs. Lipscomb will be held 11 a.m. Thursday at the Chester United Methodist Church. In lieu of flowers the family suggests that contributions be made to the Chester UMC, 12132 Percival St., Chester, Va. 23831 or St. Michael's High School Library Fund, 100 Siringo Rd., Santa Fe, N.M. 87505. Barbara Bailey Lumpkin, age 68, of St. Stephens Church, died June 3, 2002. Predeceased by husband, Robert Berkley Lumpkin. Survived by two sisters-in-law, Lillian L. Williams and Emma A. Lumpkin; nieces, nephews, and other relatives. Graveside service Wednesday at 11 a.m. in Upper King and Queen Baptist Church Cemetery. B. W. McGEORGE
Mary Corr McGeorge, of Wake, Va., formerly of Richmond, died Sunday, June 2, 2002. She is survived by her husband, Roy Winston McGeorge; a daughter, Margaret Byrd McGeorge; a stepson, George Winston McGeorge; two sisters, Elizabeth Corr Frayser and Lucy Corr Sigmon; an aunt, Mary Burke Elder; a cousin, Joseph W. Shannon, and numerous nieces and nephews. A memorial service will be held 2 p.m. Friday, June 7 at Christ Church in Middlesex County. A private interment will be held at Hollywood Cemetery.
