The Rev. Anne Rosser, pioneer, dead at 72
Nov 20, 2002
When Richmonder Anne Burch Plunkett married the Rev. Aubrey J. "Buddy" Rosser, she thought they knew what lay ahead: He was going to be a Baptist pastor and she a pastor's wife.
For many years, that was the case. They brought up four sons, and her husband served churches in Richmond, South Boston, Danville and Roanoke. She served in many church capacities, notably as a Sunday-school teacher.
But a more prominent role awaited her. The Rev. Anne Burch Plunkett Rosser became the first woman to serve as pastor of a church in the Southern Baptist Convention.
She died Sunday at her Henrico County residence. She was 72.
In 1973, Mrs. Rosser's love of biblical study led her to Union Theological Seminary in Richmond. After five years of study, she felt a call to the ministry. In 1978, she received a doctorate of ministry from the seminary and was ordained June 4, 1978, at Monument Heights Baptist Church in Henrico County, where her husband was pastor.
Monument Heights Church was willing but unable to afford to take her on as associate pastor. The next year, the call came from a church that could use two pastors.
Bainbridge-Southampton Baptist Church is a church that has services at two locations - one in the inner city, one in the suburbs. The church voted to accept the Rossers as co-pastors in 1979. They served until 1985.
In a 1979 interview, Mrs. Rosser said that during her interviews with the church before the vote, she had begun to wonder, "Is this really what the Lord's will is for our lives?" She said God gave her an "earth-shattering" answer when the church's 941 members cast a unanimous vote - a rarity in church life - to affirm their callings.
The Rossers shared preaching at both churches. They described their new ministry as a "venture of faith" and a step toward extending freedom offered by Jesus to everyone.
Later, they moved to Hampton, where Mr. Rosser served as pastor of Memorial Baptist Church and she served for 11 years as associate pastor of Hampton Baptist Church.
Mrs. Rosser, who graduated Phi Beta Kappa from Westhampton College of the University of Richmond in 1951, served as a visiting lecturer at Southeastern Baptist Theological Seminary in Wake Forest, N.C.
In 1990, the University of Richmond awarded her an honorary doctor of divinity degree to recognize her pioneering efforts in encouraging women in pastoral ministry and her dedication to the advancement of Baptist theological education in Virginia.
When they retired, the Rossers moved to Yorktown. Mr. Rosser died in 1996, and Mrs. Rosser returned to the Richmond area.
Known for her scholarly approach to theological and religious issues, Mrs. Rosser also was an untiring advocate for the removal of barriers of race and gender to religious and spiritual service.
"She was a straight-A student at Thomas Jefferson High School. When she applied to the University of Virginia, they wrote back and said, 'We don't accept women.' That set the stage for her," said her son, Aubrey J. Rosser Jr., of Altavista.
"She wasn't a crusader. She wouldn't beat you over the head to get you to come around to her ideas. But she wanted to get all she could. She came from a line of determined women. They did not want society rules to tie them down."
Survivors also include three other sons, Stephen Hollyday Rosser, of Flanders, N.Y., Philip Webber Rosser, of Richmond, and Jonathan Beaulieu Rosser, of New York; two sisters, Dr. Jeanne Beckett and Faye C. Plunkett, both of Richmond; and three grandchildren.
A memorial service will be held Wednesday at 11 a.m. at Grace Baptist Church, 4200 Dover Road.
