JACOB
Marcella Lecky Bigger Jacob, 79, of Richmond, Va. died Sunday, September 17, 2000. She is survived by her husband of 58 years, Mark I. Jacob Jr.; a sister, Mrs. Edward Lewis of Wilmington, Del.; a daughter, Susan J. Harris and her husband, The Rev. Lawrence R. Harris Jr. of Upper Marlboro, Md.; a son, Robert W. "Bo" Jacob and his wife, Willa S. Jacob of Richmond, Va.; three grandchildren, L. Reed Harris III, Joanna C. Jacob and Cary E. Jacob; and numerous nieces. Mrs. Jacob was a life long member of the Episcopal Church, most recently at All Saints Church, Richmond, Va., where she was active in the Episcopal Church Women and the Guild of the Christ Child. While residing in Maryland, she attended St. John’s Church, Ellicott City, where she was a member of the Vestry. She was treasurer of the United Thank Offering of the Episcopal Diocese of Maryland, president of the Virginia Women of Maryland and president of the Catonsville Inner Wheel of Rotary International. The family will receive friends Tuesday, September 19, 2000 from 7 to 8:30 p.m. at All Saints Episcopal Church, where services will be held Wednesday, September 20, 2000 at 2 p.m. In lieu of flowers, contributions may be made to All Saints Episcopal Church, 8787 River Road, Richmond, Va. 23229, or the Hospice of Central Virginia, 5540 Falmouth Street, Suite 307, Richmond, Va. 23230. The West Chapel of the Bennett Funeral Home, Glen Allen, Va., is in charge of arrangements.

JORDAN
Carolyn Bennett Jordan, 50, of Miami, Fla., formerly of Richmond, Va., passed away September 13, 2000. She was an RN-BSN on staff at Baptist Hospital/family birth place. Survived by her husband, William Jordan; children, Melissa Hicks, Robert Taylor Jr., Rayna Jordan and Shaun Jordan; and four grandchildren. Friends may call from 5 to 9 p.m. Tuesday at Alligood Carroll Funeral Home, 17345 South Dixie Hwy. Memorial services will be held 6 p.m. Wednesday at Baptist Hospital Chapel.

LEWIS
Graveside funeral services will be held on Tuesday, September 19, 2000, 2 p.m. at Belfast Baptist Church Cemetery in Crewe for Drexel George Lewis, 60, of Crewe, who died on Saturday, September 16, 2000. He is survived by his wife, Sherron Hall Lewis; two daughters, Laura Lewis Wood of Crewe, and Donna Lewis of Harrisonburg; one son, Shane Drexel Lewis of Crewe; and two grandchildren. He is also survived by two sisters, Elsie Biddle and Flossie Blevins; and two brothers, Roscoe Lewis and Garland Lewis, all of Crewe. Family will receive friends at the Jennings-McMillian Funeral Home, Crewe, Monday, 7 to 8:30 p.m. In lieu of flowers, please make a donation to your choice of the Nottoway County Emergency Squad or the Crewe Volunteer Fire Department.

LUCK
Garnett Evans Luck, 89, of Glen Allen, passed away September 17, 2000. She is survived by a daughter and son-in-law, Marsha Luck and David R. Anderson. Her remains rest at the Bliley Funeral Home’s Staples Mill Chapel, 8510 Staples Mill Rd., where the family will receive friends 2 to 4 and 7 to 8:30 p.m. Monday. Interment private. In lieu of flowers, contributions may be made to Lakeside Rescue Squad.

McREYNOLDS
S/Sgt. Gerald McReynolds, Retired US Army, 67, of Puddledock Rd., Prince George, died Thursday, September 14, 2000 in John Randolph Medical Center, Hopewell. A memorial service will be held Tuesday, September 19, 2000 at 11 a.m. in the Hopewell Chapel of J.T. Morriss & Son Funeral Home. Interment will be in Lincoln Cemetery, Chicago, Ill. at a later date. Memorial contributions may be made to the American Diabetes Association, 2788 Hydraulic Road, Suite 4, Charlottesville, Va. 22901.

NEY
Beth Ash Ney, 81, of Harrisonburg, died Saturday, September 18, 2000 at Rockingham Memorial Hospital. A daughter of the late Albert and Edna Goldman Ash, she was born November 15, 1918, in Birmingham, Ala. She had just recently moved to Harrisonburg from Richmond after living there for the past 17 years. Mrs. Ney was educated in Alabama schools. She was a volunteer worker for the local and state cancer societies and the Richmond Eye Bank. She was a member of Temple Beth El for 47 years prior to moving to Richmond. In 1936, she married Irving Loewner Ney, who preceded her in death on August 21, 1966. Surviving are one son, Edward A. Ney of Harrisonburg, one daughter, Barbara Ann Ney of Iowa City, Iowa; sister, Evelyn A. Ney of Boca Raton, Fla.; three grandchildren, six great-grandchildren, and one nephew. Memorial services will be held on Monday, September 18, 2000 at Temple Beth El at 7:30 p.m. with Rabbi Ariel Friedlander officiating. The family will receive friends after the service. Those desiring to do so may make memorial contributions to the American Cancer Society, 1920 Medical Ave., Harrisonburg, Va. 22801 or to the charity of one’s choice. The body was cremated at the Lindsey Harrisonburg Funeral Home.

PATTERSON
Dr. John L. Patterson Jr. of Richmond died Friday, September 15, 2000. He is survived by his sister, Elizabeth Patterson Williams of Charlottesville; nephew, John Page Williams Jr. of Annapolis, Md.; niece, Elizabeth Williams Poist of Charlottesville; great-nephew, Chad Poist; two great-nieces, Margaret Poist and Kelly Williams; and two devoted colleagues, Dr. Edith Hardie and Florence Bernstein, both of Richmond. Funeral services will be held 2 p.m. Monday, September 18 at St. Stephen’s Episcopal Church with interment in Hollywood Cemetery. In lieu of flowers, contributions may be made to the American Lung Association of Virginia or St. Stephen’s Church.

PUGH
Walter Miles Pugh, 59, of Glen Allen, died Saturday, September 16, 2000. He is survived by his wife, Jean Short Pugh; son, Andrew Miles Pugh; devoted sister and brother-in-law, Elizabeth Momot and Bob Monroe; aunt, Eleanor Wise; uncle, Ralph Bailey; several nieces, nephews, and cousins, and his buddy, Blackie. His remains rest at Bliley Funeral Home’s Staples Mill Chapel, 8510 Staples Mill Rd. A graveside service will be held 12 noon Monday at Westhampton Memorial Park. Mr. Pugh was employed by Estes Express Lines. In lieu of flowers, contributions may be made to Bon Secours Hospice, 5801 Bremo Rd., Richmond, Va. 23226.

RANDALL
Frank E. (Chuck) Randall, born in Amelia County September 3, 1927, died September 17, 2000. He is survived by his wife of 40 years, Hilda F. Randall; children, Juanita Randall Taylor, Frank E. Randall Jr., Dennis R. Worrell and Peggy Stewartson; two sisters, one brother, eight grandchildren and three great-grandchildren. He was a U.S. Navy veteran of WWII. His remains rest at the Bliley Funeral Home’s Chippenham Chapel, 6900 Hull St. Rd., where the family will receive friends 2 to 4 and 6 to 8 p.m. Monday, and where a funeral service will be held 11 a.m. Tuesday. Burial Virginia Veteran’s Cemetery in Amelia.

ROBINSON
Charles H. Robinson, formerly of 1202 N. 1st Street, entered eternal rest September 10, 2000 after a long illness. Cherishing his memory are his sister and her husband, Mrs. Daisy and William Lofton; two aunts, Geneva Robinson and Louise Branch; several nieces and nephews; a devoted sister-in-law, Mrs. Mary Wright Robinson; other relatives and friends. Gregory Paul Semon, 24, of Midlothian, died September 16, 2000. He is survived by his wife, Ruth M. Semon; a daughter, Madison G. Santschi; his parents, Arthur Semon and Lynne Reynolds; a brother, Grant Semon; and his grandparents, Alexander and Helen Semon of New York; an uncle Jeffrey Semon of Monroe, Conn. His remains rest at the Bliley Funeral Home’s Chippenham Chapel, 6900 Hull St. Rd., where the family will receive friends Monday from 2 to 4 and 7 to 9 p.m. A Mass of Christian Burial will be held 11 a.m. Tuesday at Church of the Epiphany. Interment Dale Memorial Park. The family will also receive friends at Church of the Epiphany immediately following the interment. Departed this life September 15, 2000, Mrs. Maria Elizabeth Smith, formerly of Ambrose St. She was preceded in death by her son, Alfred Devon Smith. She is survived by one son, James D. Smith; three grandchildren, Ebonique, Rachel and Parres; four brothers, John, Booker T., Esaw and Eugene Langhorne; five aunts, Emma Allen, Eva Anderson, Martha Randolph, Lillie A. Brown and devoted, Lillie White; five uncles, Jacob, Joseph, Levi and Warren Langhorne and Lewis Booker; several nieces, nephews and cousins, four sisters-in-law and other relatives and friends. Remains rest at Joseph Jenkins Jr. Funeral Home, 2011 Grayland Ave., where funeral services will be held 12 Noon Tuesday. Rev. Earl Brown officiating. SMITH
Mrs. Elsie Green Smith, a life long resident of Richmond, entered into eternal rest September 17, 2000. Mrs. Smith was born Elsie Lorretto Green on February 13, 1912. She was preceded in death by her husband, William Edward Smith, and is survived by three children, Ms. Patricia Smith Rochelle of Naples, Florida, Mrs. Wilma Smith Whitehill of Richmond, and William E. Smith Jr. of Richmond. Mrs. Smith was the beloved grandmother of five, the great-grandmother of 11, and the great-great-grandmother of two. A memorial service is planned for Tuesday at 2:30 p.m. at Emmanuel Episcopal Church in Henrico County with interment to follow at Maury Cemetery. The family requests in lieu of flowers that donations may be made to ARC.

TOMPKINS
Allene Byrd Tompkins, age 85, of Blackstone, Va., went home to be with the Lord Sunday, September 17, 2000. She was the widow of Howard E. Tompkins Sr., and was a devoted mother of ten children, Jean Williams, William Tompkins and Dorothy Crews, all of Blackstone, Grace Roughton of North Carolina, Howard Tompkins Jr. of Blackstone, Daisy Tompkins of Amelia, Dwight Tompkins of Chesterfield, George Tompkins of Blackstone, Jimmy Ray Tompkins of Farmville, and Dale Martin of Blackstone; one brother, John K. Byrd of Dewitt; one sister, Plyna Wingo of Kenbridge. She was the proud grandmother of 20 grandchildren, 23 great-grandchildren and three great-great-grandchildren. Funeral services will be held Monday, September 18, 2000, 1 p.m. at the Hamner-McMillian Funeral Home, where the family will receive friends from 12 Noon until the time of service. Interment to follow in Lakeview Cemetery, Blackstone, Va. Memorial donations may be made to the Nottoway Co. Emergency Squad, P.O. Box 453, Crewe, Va. 23930.

WHEELER
Dr. Charles Horatio Wheeler III, Vice President and Treasurer Emeritus of the University of Richmond, died Saturday, September 16, 2000. A native of Wheeling, W.Va., he was born October 30, 1904. Survivors include his wife, Elizabeth Darracott Wheeler; and their children, Charles Horatio Wheeler IV, Anne Wheeler Stratton and William Darracott Wheeler; grandchildren, Laura Kimbrough Wheeler, Charles Winston Wheeler, Lee Stratton White, Katherine Paige Stratton, Sara Darracott Wheeler and Coleman Steele Wheeler; nephew, William B. Wheeler; niece, Claire Ann Newlin; as well as great and great-great-nieces and nephews. The family will receive friends 2 to 4 p.m. Sunday at the Central Chapel of Bennett Funeral Home, 3215 Cutshaw Ave. Funeral services will be held 11 a.m. Monday, September 18, at Grace Covenant Presbyterian Church, 1627 Monument Ave. Interment in Hollywood Cemetery. ALSTON
Hesper Franklin (Frankie) Alston, 77, of Richmond, departed this life Tuesday, September 12, 2000. She is survived by her four children, Robert B. Alston Sr. and his wife, Barbara of Chesterfield, Richard Alston and his wife, Cheryl of Florida, Ralph Alston of Lakeside and Ronald Alston and his wife, Lisa of Glen Allen; ten grandchildren, six great-grandchildren; one brother, Raymond Franklin of Maryland; two sisters, Lois Foster of Lynchburg and Elsie Pryor of Maryland; a host of nieces and nephews and other relatives and friends. She was preceded in death by one grandchild, John, son of Richard; three sisters and three brothers. Frankie was a devout Christian and faithful member of Lakeside Baptist Church. She was a loving mother, grandmother, family member and friend, who will be greatly missed. Her spirit will fill our hearts with warmth and love until we are able to be with her again. Her remains rest at the Bliley Funeral Home’s Staples Mill Chapel, 8510 Staples Mill Rd., where the family will receive friends Wednesday (today), 2 to 4 and 6 to 8 p.m. and one hour prior to the service. Funeral services will be held at the funeral home Thursday, 12:30 p.m. Entombment Mt. Vernon Memorial Park. Pastor Robert Lewis officiating.

ARMSTRONG
O. Robert Armstrong, 71, of Norfolk, Va., died Monday, September 11, 2000. Mr. Armstrong was an associate at Wal-Mart and had worked previously in construction. He was in the U.S Navy Reserves. He is survived by his wife, Gayle Y. Armstrong of Norfolk; daughter, Catherine Armstrong Wilbur of Indiana; son, R. Lee Armstrong of Virginia Beach; brother, Gene Armstrong of Richmond, Va.; and 14 grandchildren. A graveside service will be held Thursday, September 14, 2000 at 1 p.m. at the Forest Lawn Cemetery. Rev. Ernest L. Trueblood officiating. The family will receive friends at Hollomon- Brown Funeral Home, Tidewater Drive Chapel, Wednesday from 7 to 9:30 p.m. In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to the American Heart Association. The Hollomon- Brown Funeral Home, Tidewater Drive Chapel, is in charge of arrangements.
