Sidney Scott Rodgers 83 years
Sidney Scott Rodgers, 83, of Falmouth, father of Brenda Parker of King George County, died Thursday, March 1, 2001, at Mary Washington Hospital. Born in Stafford County, Mr. Rodgers had retired as a carpenter from the FMC plant after 40 years. He was a member of Falmouth Baptist Church, where he was a deacon and choir member. He was a longtime member of Veterans of Foreign Wars Post 3103 and was a World War II Army veteran. He was also an avid fisherman and gardener. Besides his daughter of King George, he is survived by his wife, Anna Mae Rodgers; two other daughters, Linda Beach and Rhonda Mastin, both of Stafford; two sisters, Mary Blanche Cooper and Sadie Rodgers, both of Falmouth; a brother, Albert C. Rodgers of Falmouth; four grandchildren; one great-grandson; and numerous nieces and nephews. A funeral was held Monday at Falmouth Baptist Church. Burial was in Oak Hill Cemetery. The Rev. Leslie A. Powers and the Rev. Jack Marcom officiated. The family requests that expressions of sympathy take the form of contributions to Falmouth Baptist Church Building Fund, 302 Colonial Ave., Falmouth, Va. 22405. Mullins & Thompson Funeral Service, Fredericksburg Chapel, handled the arrangements.

Boyd E. Minor Jr. 57 years
Boyd E. Minor Jr., 57, of Spotsylvania County, father of Jennifer R. Watts of Colonial Beach, died of a stroke Tuesday, Feb. 27, 2001, at Mary Washington Hospital. Born in Washington, D.C., Mr. Minor had retired as a custodian from Walker-Grant Middle School in Fredericksburg. Besides his daughter of Colonial Beach, he is survived by his wife, Marilyn C. Minor; two other daughters, Ellen L. Minor of Norfolk and Valerie E. Tyler of Spotsylvania; four sons, Floyd A. Minor of Virginia Beach, Leroy E. Minor of Stafford, Paul E. Minor of Fredericksburg and Michael W. Minor of Spotsylvania; six sisters, Cora Johnson of Temple Hills, Md., Gloria Washington and Hilda Williams, both of Spotsylvania, Rhodie Sheppard of Yeadon, Pa., Rose Mary Minor of Alexandria and Thelma Leonard of Largo, Md.; two brothers, Charles Minor of Spotsylvania and Jeter Roy Minor of Dumfries; and 15 grandchildren. A funeral was held Monday at Bailey Funeral Service. Burial was in Glen Haven Memory Gardens in Stafford. The Rev. Charles A. Cusack officiated.

Hall Self Chipman 90 years
Hall Self Chipman, 90, of Hanover County, formerly of King George County, died Sunday, March 4, 2001, at the home of her daughter, Fayetta Oliffe of Hanover, with whom she resided. Mrs. Chipman had retired as a nurse from Brooke Nursing Center in Stafford County. She was a member of the Ashcake Volunteer Rescue Squad Auxiliary in Hanover, and president and treasurer of the Senior Citizens Group there. She was the widow of Clarence Edward Self. Besides her daughter of Hanover, she is survived by another daughter, Emma Lou Tapp of Henrico County; three sons, Clarence Edward Self Jr. and Lawrence Robert Self, both of King George and Paul Lindsey Self of Mechanicsville; a sister, Dorothy Mang of Norristown, Pa.; a brother, Kenneth Buzby of King George; 11 grandchildren; and 16 great-grandchildren. A funeral was held today at Woody Funeral Home, Atlee Chapel, Hanover. The Rev. Larry Frakes officiated. The family requests that expressions of sympathy take the form of contributions to the Ashcake Rescue Squad, 8375 New Ashcake Road, Mechanicsville, Va. 23116.

Robert K. Schroeder 78 years
Robert K. Schroeder, 78, of Flower Mound, Texas, formerly of King George County, died at his home Saturday, Feb. 10, 2001. Born in York, Pa., Mr. Schroeder had retired from the Navy after 20 years and was a World War II and Korean War veteran. He worked on the nation’s manned space program from 1960 to 1970, and worked in the biomedical department at Mary Washington Hospital from 1971 to 1983. After his retirement, he moved to Martinsburg, W.Va., where he enjoyed the horse races, and then to Texas. Survivors include his wife, Gloria White Schroeder; four sons, Scott C. Schroeder of Fort Campbell, Ky., Robert K. Schroeder of Flemington, N.J., Charles C. Schroeder of Chambersburg, Pa., and Stephen L. Schroeder of Flower Mound, Texas; a brother, Richard O. Schroeder of York, Pa.; and nine grandchildren. A private memorial service was held at the home of Stephen Schroeder on Feb. 17. Dalton & Son Funeral Home, Lewisville, Texas, handled the arrangements.

Minnie Brooks Posner 94 years
Minnie Brooks Posner, 94, of Port Royal died Monday, Feb. 19, 2001, at her home. Born in Manhattan, N.Y., she was a member of the Na–Mat Ladies Organization and was the widow of Louis Posner. Survivors include a son, Herbert Posner of Port Royal; and several nieces and nephews. A funeral was held Thursday at Mullins & Thompson Funeral Service, Fredericksburg Chapel. Burial was in Oak Hill Cemetery. The family requests that expressions of sympathy take the form of contributions to the Port Royal Rescue Squad, Box 119, Port Royal, Va. 22535.

Theresa “Tere” Minich 59 years
Theresa “Tere” Minich, 59, of Lady Lake, Fla., formerly of King George County, died of lung cancer Saturday, Feb. 24, 2001, at the Hospice House in Tavares, Fla. Mrs. Minich had resided in King George from 1980 to 1995. She was a loan officer at the Naval Surface Warfare Center Federal Credit Union in Dahlgren and a bus driver for King George County public schools. Survivors include her husband, Jere Minich; two daughters, Penny Minich Fox of Virginia Beach and Barbara Minich Walker of Gulfport, Miss.; a son, Chris Minich of Orlando, Fla.; and four grandchildren. A memorial service will be held at 11 a.m. Thursday in the Water Oaks community in Lady Lake, where she resided. The family requests that expressions of sympathy take the form of contributions to Hospice House, 12300 Lane Park Road, Tavares, Fla. 32778. Florida Cremation Society, Ocala, Fla., is handling the arrangements.

Ralph Frederick Luthy 98 years
Ralph Frederick Luthy, 98, of Kinsale in Westmoreland County died Sunday, Feb. 25, 2001, at a private health care facility in Colonial Beach. Born in Baltimore, Mr. Luthy had retired as a self-employed heating and plumbing contractor. He was a member of Carmel United Methodist Church at Kinsale, where he served as a steward for many years. Survivors include his wife, Virginia W. Luthy; a daughter, Edith Ellen Foxwell of Montross; one granddaughter; and two great-grandchildren. A funeral was held today at Carmel United Methodist Church. The Rev. Michael Southall–Vess officiated. Burial was in the church cemetery. The family requests that expressions of sympathy take the form of contributions to the Northern Neck Hospice Support Services, Box 262, Warsaw, Va. 22572; or to the Westmoreland Rescue Squad, Box 37, Mount Holly, Va. 22524. Welch Funeral Home, Montross, handled the arrangements.

Mary English 109 years
Mary English, 109, died Friday, Feb. 23, 2001, at Woodmont Health Care Center in Fredericksburg. A lifelong resident of Lorton, she was the mother of Karl English of Colonial Beach and the widow of Grover C. English. Besides her son, survivors include a daughter, Elsie Farmer of Woodbridge; five grandchildren; seven great-grandchildren; and three great-great-grandchildren. A funeral was held Tuesday at Mountcastle Funeral Home in Woodbridge. Burial was in Cranford United Methodist Church cemetery.

Donald C. Colley Jr. 75 years
Donald Lee Colley Sr., 75, of Montross died Saturday, Feb. 24, 2001, at his home. Mr. Colley, a heavy equipment operator, was an Army veteran of World War II. Survivors include two daughters, Susan Haydon of Warsaw and Sheila Taylor of Montross; one son, Donald L. Colley Jr. of Colonial Beach; one sister, Shirley Elliot of Mechanicsville; two brothers, Joseph Colley of Ashland and Silas Colley of Mascot; six grandchildren; and three great grandchildren. He was the widower of Ruth Louise Hall Colley. A funeral was held Tuesday at Carmel United Methodist Church in Kinsale. The Rev. Michael Southall Voss officiated. Burial was in the church cemetery. The family asks that expressions of sympathy take the form of contributions to Carmel United Methodist Church Youth Group, c/o of Sheila Taylor, 350 McGuire’s Wharf Road, Montross, Va. 22520. Welch Funeral Home, Montross, handled the arrangements.

Randolph Wilson Ward 78 years
Randolph Wilson Ward, 78, of Kinsale in Westmoreland County died at his home Wednesday, Feb. 14, 2001. Born in Piscataway, Md., Mr. Ward had retired as a fire chief with the federal government. He also retired as a lieutenant from the Army Air Corps. Survivors include his wife, Linda G. Ward; three daughters, Lynda Jeannette Ward of Coinjock, N.C., Kimberley Ainsworth of Freehold, N.J., and Christina Maisey of Norfolk; a son, J. Patrick Walsh III of Norfolk; a sister, Ruth Cope of Greenville, S.C.; and five grandchildren. Welch Funeral Home, Montross, is handling the arrangements, which will be private. The family requests that expressions of sympathy take the form of contributions to the Kinsale Volunteer Fire Department, Box 51, Kinsale, Va. 22488.

John Robert Thompson 76 years
John Robert Thompson, 76, of LaPlata, Md. died Thursday, Feb. 8, 2001, at Civista Medical Center in LaPlata. He was the father of Sonja I. Stine of Colonial Beach. Born Sept. 6, 1924, in Mt. Victoria, Md., Mr. Thompson was the son of the late Briscoe and Lillian Thompson. He was a U.S. Army veteran, retiring as a mess sergeant. He loved the outdoors and gardening. In addition to his parents, Mr. Thompson was preceded in death by five brothers: Delmer Thompson, McQuade Thompson, Paul Thompson, Randolph Thompson and Wendell Thompson. In addition to his daughter of Colonial Beach, Mr. Thompson is survived by his wife, Inge A. Thompson of LaPlata; a son, Henry J. Thompson of San Antonio, Tex.; two brothers, James Thompson and Grayson Thompson; and two sisters, Letha Edwards and Sarah Lorence. A funeral was held last Wednesday at Arehart-Echols Funeral Home, LaPlata. Burial was in Maryland Veterans Cemetary, Cheltenham, Md. Pallbearers were Vernon Zenci, Ronald Stine, Steven Norris, Charles Thompson, Jimmy Thompson and Craig Bolen.

John William Stern 79 years
John William Stern, 79, of Colonial Beach died Friday, Feb. 16, 2001, at Mary Washington Hospital. He was a member of the Loyal Order of Moose, Colonial Beach and the Colonial Beach Methodist Church. He had retired from International Harvester and was a World War II Navy veteran. Survivors include his wife, Violet C. Stern; four daughters, Margaret Rucker of Ohio, Nancy B. Stern of Georgia, Lisa Pierce of Georgia and Mary L. Berry of Florida; three sons, Roger L. Stern of Pennsylvania, John C. Stern of Ohio, and Richard W. Stern of Pennsylvania; two sisters, Lois Kimmel and Geraldine Kovack, both of Pennsylvania; a brother, James Stern of Pennsylvania; 15 grandchildren; nine great-grandchildren; and numerous nephews and nieces. A Loyal Order of Moose service was held Sunday. A funeral was held Monday at the Nash & Slaw Funeral Home. The Rev. Louis Martin officiated. Burial was in the National Memorial Cemetery in Falls Church. The family requests that expressions of sympathy take the form of contributions to Oak Grove Volunteer Fire Department, P.O. Box 159, Colonial Beach, Va. 22443.

Norvel P. "Mack" Newman 65 years
Norvel P. "Mack" Newman, 65, of Colonial Beach died Saturday, Feb. 10, 2001, at Greenville Memorial Hospital. Born in Westmoreland County, Mr. Newman had retired from lawn care. He was a member of New Monrovia Baptist Church in Colonial Beach. Survivors include four daughters, Darline Davis of Fredericksburg, Gwendolyn Manley, Michele Newman and Brenda Brown, all of Colonial Beach; four sons, Gerald Newman of Colonial Beach, Douglas Newman and Carlus Newman, both of King George and Ronald Newman of North Carolina; a sister, Patricia Gore of Fort Washington, Md.; a brother, Donald Watts of Maryland; 25 grandchildren; 10 great-grandchildren; a niece and two nephews. A funeral was held Saturday at New Monrovia Baptist Church. The Rev. Welford McDowney officiated. Burial was in Historyland Memorial Park in King George. Weldon–Fisher Funeral Home, Nomini Grove, handled the arrangements.

Virginia Burrell McClure 83 years
Virginia Burrell McClure, 83, of Owens in King George County, died Sunday, Feb. 18, 2001, at Heritage Hall. She was a member of Oakland Baptist Church. Survivors include her husband Orman R. McClure; a daughter, Patricia Hayden Tallent of Owens; a stepdaughter, Pamela Richmond of Quinwood, W.Va.; a stepson, Kerry McClure of King George; two sisters, Margaret Childress of King George and Mollie King of Fair Play, S.C.; three brothers, Harry Burrell of Dahlgren, and Kenneth Burrell and Bradley Burrell, both of Houston, Texas; six grandchildren; and a great-grandchild. A funeral will be held at 2 p.m. Thursday, at Nash & Slaw Funeral Home, King George, with the Rev. Guy D. Mattox Jr. officiating. Burial will be in Oakland Baptist Church Cemetery. The family will receive friends from 6:30 until 8 Wednesday evening at the funeral home. The family requests that expressions of sympathy take the form of contributions to the Dahlgren Rescue Squad, Box 1375, Dahlgren, Va. 22448.
