Mrs. Linda Starlene Mullins Randolph
DORAN, Va. -- Mrs. Linda Starlene Mullins Randolph, 48, died Tuesday, Jan. 16, 2001, in a Kingsport, Tenn., hospital following a brief illness. She was born in Buchanan County, Va., and was a daughter of the late Walter Edward "Peabody" and Julia "Tootsie" Wimmer Mullins, both Buchanan County natives. She was a 1971 graduate of Whitewood High School and was a former employee of the Clinch Valley Medical Center in Richlands. She was a lifelong resident of the Doran area and was a member of the Trinity Pentecostal Holiness Church at Oakwood, Va. In addition to her parents, she was preceded in death by one brother, Billy Edward Mullins. Survivors are: her husband, Mr. Carmon Randolph; two daughters, Miss Julia Denise Randolph of Abingdon, Va., and Miss Heather Carolyn Randolph of Abingdon; one son, Johnathan Carmon Randolph of the home; seven sisters, Mrs. Thomas (Ella Jean) Cole of Jewell Ridge, Va., Mrs. Qubert (Mary Mae) White of Palatka, Fla., Mrs. Gary (Lois) Horn of Cedar Bluff, Mrs. Mack (Anna Joyce) Keen of Bristol, Va., Mrs. Brenda Horn of Chesterfield, Va., Miss Glenna Mullins of Concord, N.C., and Ms. Ronnie (Karen) Reynolds of Swords Creek, Va.; three brothers, Mr. James Manuel Mullins of Palatka, Mr. Larry Eugene Mullins of Bluff City, Tenn., and Mr. Gary Dean Mullins of Sophia, N.C. Funeral services will be conducted Saturday at 1 p.m. at the Trinity Pentecostal Holiness Church at Oakwood, Va., with Rev. T.R. Stump, Rev. Jim Clark, Rev. Harold Deel and Rev. Dave Gibson officiating. Interment will follow in Greenhills Memory Gardens at Claypool Hill, Va. Pallbearers will be: Lenny Mullins, Marty Keen, Patrick White, Kenny Ray Stanford II, Bruce Cole, Roy Jewell, Henry Jewell, Marcus Jewell, Gary Joe Mullins and Greg "Boo" Mullins. Men of the Trinity Pentecostal Holiness Chruch will serve as honorary pallbearers. Friends may call at the Hurst-Scott Funeral Home in Richlands after 6 p.m. Thursday and an evening service will be held at 7 p.m. in the funeral chapel. Mrs. Randolph will be taken to the Trinity Pentecostal Holiness Church in Oakwood Friday where friends may call after 5 p.m. with an evening service starting at 7 p.m. Hurst-Scott Funeral Home in Richlands is in charge of arrangements.

Carol Compton
DAVENPORT, Va. -- Carol Compton, 62, died Thursday, Jan. 18, 2001, at his residence after losing his battle with cancer. A native of Buchanan County, he was a son of the late William Compton and Nora Hess Compton. In addition to his parents, a brother, Sam Compton, and a sister, Vickie Caldwell, preceded him in death. He was a black Smith and well-known for his ability to shoe horses. He was a member of the Freewill Baptist Church. He is survived by a son, Timothy Compton of Honaker; a daughter, Belisha Compton of Davenport; sisters, Ellen Weiss of Dayton, Ohio, Nannie Ray of Troy, Ohio, and Hattie May of West Milton, Ohio; brothers, Billy Compton of Dayton, Ohio, and Don Compton of Centerville, Ohio; and two granddaughters, Hannah and Tish. The funeral service will be Sunday, Jan. 21, 2001, at Haysi Funeral Home Chapel at 1 p.m. with Rev. Roy Lee Wilson officiating. Burial will follow in the Compton Family Cemetery at Davenport, near the home. Peanut Gilbert, Lynn Gilbert, Jimmy Horn, Dale Stanley and Kenny Weiss will serve as pallbearers. Friends may call at the funeral home after 6 p.m. on Saturday, where a song service will be held at 7 p.m. Haysi Funeral Home is in charge of the arrangements.

Lucy Marrs Hipps
BELLEVUE, Iowa -- Lucy Marrs Hipps, 89 years of age, formerly of Buchanan County, passed away Friday, Jan. 19, 2001, in Mill Valley Care Center following an extended illness. Born in Buchanan County, she was the daughter of the late Ballard P. and Roxie Flemings Marrs. She was a resident of Buchanan County most of her life until she went to reside with her daughter, Mrs. Judy Maynard in Bellevue. She was a devoted wife, loving mother and a homemaker. She was a member of the Jubilee Christian Center. Mrs. Hipps was preceded in death by: her husband, Darrell Hipps, July 31, 1983; two daughters; three sisters; four brothers; one grandchild; and one great-grandchild. She is survived by two daughters: Mrs. Starkey (Helen) Adkins of Columbus, Ohio, and Mrs. Jim (Judy) Maynard of Bellevue; two sons: Ralph Hipps of Carpentersville, Ill., and Larry Hipps of Sherman, Texas; and one sister, Ruth Knovac of Jacksonville, Fla. Mrs. Hipps is also survived by 13 grandchildren; 19 great-grandchildren; and three great-great-grandchildren. Funeral services will be conducted Wednesday, Jan. 24, 2001, at 1 p.m. at the Grundy Funeral Home Chapel with Evangelist Michael Trent officiating with burial to follow in the Mountain Valley Memorial Park at Big Rock, Va. Friends may call at the Grundy Funeral Home Chapel Tuesday afternoon at 5 p.m.

Mr. Paul Thomas Chambers
BUCHANAN COUNTY, Va. -- Mr. Paul Thomas Chambers, 87, of the Pea Patch section, passed away Wednesday, Jan. 24, 2001, at his home following a long illness. Born in Buchanan County, he was the son of the late Bob and Florence Moore Chambers. He was a retired coal miner, a farmer and member of UMWA Local 7327, Jewell Valley, Va. In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by his wife, Mary Evelyn Day Chambers; four sisters, Mary Carter, Bell Osborne, Margie Riley and Edith Rose; and three brothers, Clarence Chambers, Claude Chambers and Walter Chambers. Mr. Chambers is survived by: four sons, Ralph Chambers and wife Shirley of Pounding Mill, Va., and Rex Chambers, Homer Chambers and Jerry Chambers, all of Jewell Ridge, Va.; four daughters, Mrs. Don (Gaynell) Horton of Raven, Va., Mrs. Don (Maybell) Cole of Jewell Ridge, Mrs. Ronnie (Berniece) Nelson of Jewell Ridge and Mrs. Clyde (Carol) Nelson of Jewell Ridge; two brothers, Ira Chambers of North Carolina, and Sherman Chambers of Doran, Va.; 17 grandchildren; 10 great-grandchildren; and seven step-great-grandchildren also survive. Funeral service will be conducted at 11 a.m. Friday, Jan. 26, 2001, at the Singleton Funeral Service Chapel in Cedar Bluff, Va., with Rev. Troy Lester officiating. Burial will follow in the Day Family Cemetery at Pea Patch, Va. Grandsons will serve as pallbearers. Randy Mitchell will serve as honorary pallbearer. The family will receive friends at the Singleton Funeral Service in Cedar Bluff, Va., from 6-9 p.m. Thursday. Singleton Funeral Service in Cedar Bluff is in charge of arrangements.

Mr. Earnest "Buck" Matney
ABINGDON, Va. -- Mr. Earnest "Buck" Matney, 76, died Thursday, Jan. 25, 2001, in Wellmont Holston Valley Hospital and Medical Center in Kingsport, Tenn. Born in Buchanan County, Va., he was a son of the late Wade Matney and Elizabeth Davis Matney. He was the widower of Dolly Mae Kelly Matney. Mr. Matney was a retired heavy equipment operator. He had resided in Freehold, N.J., for 26 years before moving to the Abingdon area 27 years ago. Mr. Matney was well liked and admired by his friends and neighbors. He was often referred to as "Mr. Fit It" because of his willingness to work on machinery of all types for them. He is survived by his daughter and son-in-law, Barbara and John Gualtieri of Edison, N.J.; and a grandson, Chad Earnest Gualtieri also of Edison. The funeral service will be conducted at 8 p.m. Sunday in Farris Funeral Chapel with Rev. Jason Nunley officiating. Entombment and committal services will be Monday at 1 p.m. in Colonial Chapel Mausoleum at Forest Hills Memory Gardens in Abingdon. The family and friends will gather at the funeral home and go in procession to the cemetery. Pallbearers will be Ernest "Bud" Matney, Swanson Matney, Anthony Childress, James Ashby, Anson Lambert, Randy Stacey and Junior Blankenship. The family will receive friends from 6-8 p.m. before the funeral service Sunday. Farris Funeral Service is serving the family of Mr. Matney.

Riddle Stiltner
GRUNDY, Va. -- Riddle Stiltner, 87 years of age, of the Lynn Camp section of Route 1, passed away Friday, Jan. 25, 2001, following an extended illness. Born in Buchanan County, he was the son of the late Miles and Sarah Jane Fields Stiltner. He was a member of Blackey Church of Christ, a retired self-employed coal operator and a member of John Ratliff Post 164 of the American Legion. He was a veteran of World War II, having enlisted in April 1941. He entered the continent of Europe in December 1943 and served there until his departure in October 1945. He was assigned to the 979th Signal Motor Mess Co. and earned the American Theater Service Ribbon, the European African Middle Eastern Service Ribbon and the World War II Victory Ribbon. He served in campaigns in Rhineland and Central Europe. He is survived by one daughter, Bessie Riddle Hawkins of Grundy; one son, Ricky Darrell Stiltner of Route 1, Grundy; and one sister, Virginia Fern Farmer of Route 1 , Grundy. He is also survived by four grandchildren; and three great-grandchildren. He was preceded in death by his wife, Maudie Farmer Stiltner on June 29, 1992; two sisters, Callie Spencer and Elizabeth Farmer; and five brothers, Oscar, Lilburn, Marvin, Lawson and Arnold Stiltner. He was also preceded in death by one great-grandson, Tyler Brett Stiltner. Funeral services will be conducted Sunday, Jan. 28, 2001, at 2 p.m. at Grundy Funeral Home Chapel with Evangelists Michael Trent, Mike Rife and Phillip Poe officiating with burial to follow in Mountain Valley Memorial Park at Big Rock, Va. There will be an evening service Saturday at 7 p.m. at the funeral home chapel. Active pallbearers will be David Farmer, Mark Griffey, Clayton Mullins, Danny Mullins, Stuart Ritchie, Stephen Stiltner, Mike Stiltner and Russell Charles. Honorary pallbearers will be elders and deacons of Blackey Church of Christ and elders and deacons of Grundy Church of Christ. Full military rites will be conducted at the cemetery by members of John Ratliff Post 164 of the American Legion. Grundy Funeral Home of Grundy, Va., is in charge of all arrangements.

Mr. Ralph Thacker
ABINGDON, Va. -- Mr. Ralph Thacker, 54, died Thursday, Jan. 25, 2001, at Holston Valley Hospital and Medical Center. He was born in Buchanan County and had lived most of his life in Washington County. He was the son of the late Oliver Thacker. He was a U.S. Army veteran serving during the Vietnam Conflict. He was a member of James Peters DAV Chapter 57, the UMWA Local 1640 and of the Baptist faith. He was a loving father, granddaddy and son. Survivors include two sons, John Thacker and wife, Amy, Abingdon, Va., and Daryll Thacker and wife Sherry, Abingdon, Va.; his mother, Dessie Arms, Abingdon; one brother, Bill Thacker, Vansant, Va.; three grandchildren, Kayla Marie Thacker, Conrad Jordan Thacker and McKenzia Nicole Thacker; and his wife, Frances Thacker. A funeral service will be conducted Sunday, Jan. 28, 2001, at 2 p.m. in Farris Funeral Chapel with Rev. John W. Price officiating. Burial will follow in Forest Hills Memory Gardens with military rites by Patton-Crosswhite VFW Post 6975. The family will receive friends from 6-8 p.m. Saturday night at the funeral home. Pallbearers will be Charles Lockard, Raymond McCoy, Earl White, Keith Rasnake, Kenneth Rowe, Jess Thacker and David Price Sr. Honorary pallbearers will be Dr. Paul Kelley, Dr. V.A. Motley, Dr. Kiter and James Peters DAV Chapter 57. Farris Funeral Service is in charge of arrnagements.

Carrie M. Arrington
LEBANON, Va. -- Carrie M. Arrington of Route 1, Vansant, Va., 87, passed away Saturday, Jan. 27, 2001, at her daughter's home. A lifelong resident of Buchanan County, she was the daughter of the late Jake and Emmy Compton Owens. She was a homemaker and a member of the Sandy Basin Primitive Baptist Church. She was preceded in death by a daughter, Wanda Elaine Arrington; four brothers; and three sisters. Survivors include her husband of 68 years, Clinton Arrington Sr.; a daughter and her husband, Sue and Clifford Edwards of Lebanon; a son and his wife, Clinton Jr. and Gladys Arrington of Route 1, Vansant; a brother, Jack Owens of Route 1, Haysi, Va.; seven grandchildren and spouses, Wanda and Robert Coleman, Kathy and Vester Deel, Jeffrey and Kim Ramey, Jonathan and Jenny Ramey, Anthony and Angie Ramey, David and Debbie Arrington and Randy and Shawna Arrington; two step-grandchildren and spouses, David and Tammy Edwards and Debbie and Eric Nicholson; seven great-grandchildren; and six step-great-grandchildren. Funeral service will be conducted 11 a.m. Monday, Jan. 29, 2000, at Haysi Funeral Home with Elders Joe Edwards, Daryl Davis and Danny Smith officiating. Burial will follow in the Arrington Family Cemetery, Route 2, Haysi, Va. Grandsons will serve as pallbearers. Honorary pallbearers will be Vester Deel, Robert Coleman, Paul Matney and Mike Ratliff. The family will receive friends after 6 p.m. on Sunday at Haysi Funeral Home where an evening service will be held at 7 p.m. with Elders Garnell Gilbert, Don Stacy and Roger Fuller. Kenis Darnell
BIG ROCK, Va. -- Kenis Darnell, 87 years of age, passed away Saturday, Jan. 27, 2001, in Buchanan General Hospital following an extended illness. Born in Pike County, Ky., he was a son of the late Colbert and Virgie Coleman Darnell. He had been a resident of Buchanan County several years, a member of the Free Pentecostal Church of God, Mouth Card, Ky., a retired employee of Pittston Coal Corporation and a member of United Mine Workers of America Local Union No. 8588. Mr. Darnell is survived by his wife, Udell Ratliff Rice Darnell, Big Rock; two daughters: Loretta Sue Whittaker, Stanford, Ky., and Virgie Ellen Carter, Terre Haute, Indiana; two stepdaughters: Charlotte Ann Pennington, Maynardsville, Ky., and Rebecca Owens, Grundy, Va.; four stepsons: Jim Radford Rice, Grundy, Julius Rice Jr., Vansant, Va., Robert Rice, Big Rock, and Jeffery Scott Rice, Big Rock; three brothers: Earl Scott Darnell, Mouth Card, Ky., Lloyd Darnell, Mouth Card, and Forester Darnell, West Terre Haute, Indiana. He is also survived by five grandchildren; 20 step-grandchildren; seven great-grandchildren; and six step-great-grandchildren. He was preceded in death by two sisters, Ethel and Mary Magalene Darnell; one half-sister, Icie Shortt; five brothers, Culbert, Charles, Lundy, Herman and Arville Darnell; one half-brother, Columbus Shortt; and one stepson, Jerry Rice. Funeral services will be conducted Wednesday, Jan. 31, 2001, at 1 p.m. at Grundy Funeral Home Chapel with Ministers Jimmy Kerr, E.C. Honaker, Ralph Taylor and Jessie Taylor officiating with burial to follow in Mountain Valley Memorial Park, Big Rock. Friends may call at Grundy Funeral Home Chapel Monday afternoon at 5 p.m. with services Monday and Tuesday evenings at 7 p.m. Active pallbearers will be, grandsons and step-grandsons. Grundy Funeral Home of Grundy is in charge of all arrangements.

Gary Potter
TROY, Va. -- Gary Potter, 46 years of age, formerly of Big Rock, Va., passed away Friday, Jan. 26, 2001, in Martha Jefferson Hospital, Charlottesville, Va. He was born Jan. 28, 1954, in Buchanan County, Va., and he was the son of the late Sidney (Kenny) Potter and Mrs. Etta Skeens Potter Street of Baptist Valley, Va. He was of the Holiness faith, a 1972 graduate of Grundy Senior High School and a 1976 graduate of Virginia Polytechnic Institute, Blacksburg, Va., where he earned his bachelor of science degree in mining engineering. He was employed by the Department of Mines, Minerals and Energy as an environmental engineer consultant. He was an avid outdoorsman, a loving husband of 23 years to his wife, Sue McClanahan Potter, Troy, Va. Additional survivors include his stepfather, Paul Street, Baptist Valley, Va., one sister, Cynthia Kay Potter, Swords Creek, Va.; two brothers, Billy Darrell Potter and wife Sue of Willis Springs, Va., and Kenneth Potter of Grundy; his father and mother-in-law, Earl and Bessie McClanahan, Hurley, Va.; a stepsister, Mrs. Paula (Wayne) Compton, Compton Mountain, Va.; stepbrothers, Teddy Street and wife, Julie, Vansant, Va., Harrison Street, Richlands, Jeff Street, Vansant, and Keith Street and wife, Lisa, Abingdon, Va. He is also survived by several nieces and nephews. Funeral services will be held Tuesday, Jan. 30, 2001, at 1 p.m. in The Word Evangelistic Outreach Church at Hurley with Rev. Darrell Davis, Rev. Jerry Wilson, and Elders Jimmy Kerr and E.C. Honaker officiating. Burial will follow in Mountain Valley Memorial Park, Big Rock, Va. Active pallbearers will be Dickey Joe Belcher, Allen Bishop, David Benner, Gary Barney, Charles Hale, Conrad Spangler, Mack Hagy and Dick Rapp. Honorary pallbearers will be management and staff of the Division of Mineral Mining of Charlottesville, Va., and Dr. Gordon Morris. There will be services at the church Monday evening at 7 p.m. The family of Gary Potter is being served by the Shortridge-Ramey Funeral Home of Grundy, Va.
