Yarber

Edward Benny Yarber Sr., age 64, of Glade Spring, died Friday, June 13, 1997 in Bristol Regional Medical Center.

He was a native of Washington County, was self-employed and was a veteran of the Korean War.

Survivors include four sons, Edward B. Yarber Jr., and John Yarber, both of Abingdon, William Yarber, Meadowview, and Michael Yarber, Essex, Md.; four daughters, Rita Crosswhite and Judy Crosswhite, both of Meadowview, Debbie Buckles, Abingdon, and Kimberly Yarber, Jacksonville, Fla.; his mother, Bessie Yarber, Glade Spring; six brothers: Jimmy Yarber, Bristol, Tenn., Joe Yarber, Frank Yarber, Riley Yarber and Carter Yarber, all of Glade Spring, and Leonard Yarber, Emory; four sisters: Betty Blevins, Bristol, Tenn., Rosemary O'Quinn and Linnie Litton, both of Meadowview, and Lulabelle Delp, Glade Spring; 19 grandchildren.

Graveside services were conducted at 4 p.m. Monday, June 16, in Old Glade Presbyterian Cemetery with military rites conducted by Patton-Crosswhite VFW Post 6975.

Farris Funeral Service in Abingdon was in charge of arrangements.

Boots

Harry D. Boots, age 69, of Atkins, died Thursday, June 19, 1997 in Bristol Regional Medical Center.

Mr. Boots was a native of the Lakeport, Calif., area and had been living in Smyth County since the death of his wife, Sandra K. Boots, last year. He was a veteran of the U.S. Army.

Survivors include two daughters, Nancy Kite, Santa Rosa, Calif., and Rhodenia Sevey; three sons: Donald Boots, Knoxville, Tenn., Ronald Boots, Atkins, and David Boots, Tracy, Calif.; one brother, Orville Boots, Santa Rosa, Calif.; 10 grandchildren, one nephew, and three nieces.

Graveside services will be held Sunday, June 22, at 2 p.m. in Roundhill Cemetery with the Rev. Perry Hall officiating. Full military honors will be provided by Francis Marion VFW Post 4667. The family will receive friends Sunday from noon until time of service at the funeral home.

Barnett's Funeral Home is in charge of arrangements.

Gobble

William Arnold Gobble, age 76, died Monday, June 16, 1997 in Smyth County Community Hospital. He was a member of Cedars Baptist Church and was a veteran of World War II.

He is survived by his wife, Mabel Blevins Gobble, Marion; one daughter and son-in-law, Anita and Jimmy Fletcher, Marion; one son and daughter-in-law, Kevin and Susan Gobble, Marion; four sisters: Lula Belle Rader, Louisiana, Mary Powell, Ben Salem, Penn., Frances Privette, Aberdeen, Md., and Violet Halsey, Marion; two brothers, David Gobble, Marion, and Eugene Gobble, Aberdeen, Md.; two grandsons, Jerry Fletcher, Atkins, and Brian Fletcher, Marion; two great-grandchildren: Kelsey and Austin Fletcher.

Funeral services were conducted at 2 p.m. Thursday, June 19, at Newberry Funeral Home Chapel with the Rev. Avery Sheets and the Rev. Charles Blevins officiating. Burial was in Grosses Creek Cemetery. Francis Marion VFW Post 4667 conducted graveside military honors.

Newberry Funeral Home in Chilhowie was in charge of arrangements.

Hayden

Nannie G. Hayden, age 74, of Saltville, died Tuesday, June 17, 1997 in Henrico Doctors Hospital in Richmond. She was the widow of Arthur Hayden Sr. She was also preceded in death by three sons: James Hayden, Dempsey Hayden and Charles Hayden; and two grandchildren: Theresa Ann Frye and Kevin Hayden.

Survivors include one son, Arthur Hayden Jr., Saltville; two daughters, Charlotte Sue Frye, Prince George, and Patsy MacKenzie, Chester; four grandchildren: David Hayden, Crystal MacKenzie, James Hayden Jr., and Sandy Marie Frye; several nieces and nephews.

Graveside services were conducted at 2 p.m. Friday, June 20, in Mount Rose Cemetery with the Rev. Bobby Briggs officiating.

D.R. Henderson Funeral Home in Saltville was in charge of arrangements.

Hayton

Rev. Paul E. Hayton, age 61, died Tuesday, June 17, 1997 in Smyth County Community Hospital. He was a dedicated minister of the Gospel of Jesus Christ and was a talented gospel musician, playing instruments.

Although legally blind, he could do carpenter work and cabinet building. He was the best father and a great light has left our midst.

He is survived by his wife, Beulah Jackson Hayton of Marion; one daughter, Rebekah Howdeshell of Damascus; three sons, Bobby E. Hayton of Saltville, Steve A. Hayton of Marion, and Timothy P. Hayton of Maiden, N.C.; six sisters: Gerthel Taylor of Marion, Adell Davidson and Christine Neal, both of Saltville, Burnice Henegar of Norfolk, Elsie Waldon of Rockville, Md., and Thelma Lewis of Abingdon; three brothers, Avery Hayton and R.D. Hayton, both of Saltville, and Marcial Hayton of Liberty, S.C.; 11 grandchildren and two great-grandchildren.

Funeral services were held Friday, June 20, at 2 p.m. at Seaver- Brown Chapel with the Rev. Roy E. Shrewsbury, the Rev. Jim Jeffords, the Rev. Larry Jeffords, and the Rev. Monroe Greely officiating. Burial followed in Wassum Cemetery.

Heath

Thelma K. Heath, age 75, of Meadowview, died Wednesday, June 18, 1997 in Johnston Memorial Hospital in Abingdon.

She was a lifelong resident of Washington County and was of the Baptist faith. She was preceded in death by a daughter, Christina Heath; one brother, Clyde Baumgarner; one sister, Ruby Moore; and grandson, Paul Taylor Jr.

Survivors include her husband, Russell Heath; three sons, Tom Heath, Hickory, N.C., Sam Heath, Bristol, and Wayne Heath, Damascus; four daughters, Mary Lewis, Damascus, Jean Taylor, Hickory, N.C., Brenda Mulkey, Meadowview, and Jane DeBusk, Glade Spring; three daughters-in-law, Betty Ann, Betty J. and Nancy Heath; four sons-in-law, Lonnie Lewis, Paul Taylor, Les Mulkey and Gene DeBusk; two sisters, Susie L. Rogers, Sierra Vista, Ariz., and Gladys Heath, Glade Spring; 11 grandchildren, six great-grandchildren, two step-grandchildren; two step-great-grandchildren; several nieces and nephews.

Funeral services were conducted at 11 a.m. Friday, June 20, in Farris Funeral Chapel with burial in Rush Creek Cemetery.

Johnson

Ethel Lucille Butler Johnson, age 96, of Glade Spring, died Tuesday, June 17, 1997 in Bristol Regional Medical Center. She was the widow of Moses Johnson.

Survivors include one foster son, Melvin Bailey, Cleveland, Ohio; three foster daughters, Mildred Bailey, Della Bailey, both of Cleveland, Ohio, and Creella Bailey, Knoxville, Tenn.; two nieces, Annie Vannoy, Glade Spring, and Kay Frances Fullen, Tennessee; and one nephew, Charles Pitts Bradley, Bristol.

Funeral services were conducted at 12:30 p.m. Friday, June 20, in Williams Funeral Home Chapel with Dr. W.A. Johnson and the Rev. Barbara Bradley officiating. Burial was in Seals- Brown Cemetery, Glade Spring.

Williams Funeral Home in Chilhowie was in charge of arrangements.

McClanahan

Helen G. McClanahan, age 93, died Tuesday, June 17, 1997 in the Valley Health Care Center in Chilhowie.

Mrs. McClanahan was the firstborn of the 13 children of the late Charles and Anna Goble. She attended Knoxville College and later was a school teacher in a one room school in Sugar Grove. She was a member of the Mount Pleasant United Methodist Church.

She is survived by three sisters, Patricia Kane of Hampton, Juanita Allen of Huntington Station, Long Island, N.Y., and Anne Broady of Pasco, Wash.; four brothers, David Goble of Hampton, Charles Goble and Henry Goble, both of Marion, and William Goble of St. Louis, Mo.; one daughter-in-law, Alice McClanahan of Gary, Ind.; several grandchildren and great-grandchildren.

Funeral services were held Friday, June 20, at 11 a.m. at Mount Pleasant United Methodist Church with the Rev. Carol Ferguson officiating. Burial followed in the Roundhill Cemetery.

Seaver- Brown Funeral Service was in charge of arrangements.

Pennington

Isabell Virginia Pennington, age 79, of Abingdon, died Wednesday, June 18, 1997 in Johnston Memorial Hospital, Abingdon.

She was a native of Smyth County and was the widow of Orley Delmer Pennington. She was also preceded in death by her parents, Roscoe and Lessie Denny Blevins; and one daughter, Myrtle Pechan. She was a homemaker and a member of St. Matthews Lutheran Church, Konnarock.

Survivors include three daughters: Betty Carol Pennington, Abingdon, Mrs. A.L. (Sarah) Cusson, Tucker, Ga., and Mrs. Earl (Eleanor) Wilcox, Chantilly; one brother, William Blevins, Stanley; three sisters, Hazel Pennington, Konnarock, Catherine Martin, Marion, and Rachael Morrisette, Newport News; nine grandchildren; four great-grandchildren; three step-grandchildren; several nieces and nephews.

Funeral services were conducted at 11 a.m. Friday, June 20, in St. Matthews Lutheran Church in Konnarock with the Rev. Roger Kluttz officiating. Burial was in Laurel Valley Cemetery in Troutdale. In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be made to the American Cancer Society, 167 East Main St., Abingdon, VA 24210.

Johnson Funeral Home in Damascus was in charge of arrangements.
