de Bord

Charles M. de Bord, age 63, died Friday, Aug. 22, 1997 at his home in Abingdon. He was a former resident of Marion but had resided in Abingdon for the past seven years. He retired in 1994 from the State of Virginia after 28 years of service as Audit Manager of Southwest Virginia District. He was also a member of the First United Methodist Church in Marion.

He is survived by two sisters and brothers-in-law, Mary M. and Lake L. Kilby of North Wilkesboro, N.C., and Rosalene (Posey) and Ed Heath of Wytheville; one aunt, Laura E. Lawson of Marion; two nephews, Terry Lee Kilby of Duluth, Ga., and Derwin D. Kilby of North Wilkesboro, N.C.; one niece, Lisa E. Hogue of Slidell, La.; one great-niece, Heather Treadway of North Wilkesboro, N.C.; two great-nephews, Devin S. Hogue of Slidell, La., and Jonathan Kilby of Duluth, Ga.; a very special friend, Michael G. Pruitt of Abingdon.

Funeral services were held Monday, Aug. 25, at 11 a.m. at Seaver- Brown Funeral Chapel with burial in Round Hill Cemetery in Marion. In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to the Washington County Lifesaving Crew, c/o Doug Carrier, P.O. Box 65, Abingdon, VA 24212.

Seaver- Brown Funeral Service was in charge of arrangements.

Sturgill

Henry F. Sturgill, age 81, of Kingsport, Tenn., died Tuesday, Aug. 26, 1997 at Wellmont Hospice House in Bristol, Tenn., after a brief illness.

He had been a resident of Kingsport for the past 13 years coming from Marion. He was retired from the Brunswick Corporation after 35 years of service.

He was preceded in death by his parents, Roscoe and Virgie Sturgill and two sisters.

He was a faithful Christian and attended Cherokee Community Baptist Church.

Surviving are his wife, Grace Hopkins Sturgill, Kingsport, Tenn.; one daughter, Mrs. John (Janice) Barr, Kingsport; one sister, Virginia Vernon, Greensboro, N.C.; four brothers, Earl Sturgill, Milwaukee, Wisc., C. Jack Saturgill, Chilhowie, Paul Sturgill, Marion, and Billy R. Sturgill, Greensboro, N.C.; two grandchildren, Mark Barr, Johnson City, Tenn., and Christy Denton, Bristol; one great-grandchild, Dillon Barr, Johnson City, Tenn.

Visitation will be at East Lawn Funeral Home Thursday, Aug. 28, from 6-8 p.m. A chapel service will be conducted in the funeral home chapel at 8 p.m. with the Rev. James Woods and Elder Carl Hart officiating.

Graveside services will be conducted Friday, Aug. 29, at East Lawn Memorial Park. Service time will be announced later.

East Lawn Funeral Home in Kingsport, Tenn., is in charge of arrangements.

McGuire

Ernest McGuire, age 77, of Tazewell, died Monday, Aug. 25, 1997 in Buchanan General Hospital, Grundy. He was a veteran of World War II.

Survivors include his wife, Odlean McGuire, Marion; one son, William A. McGuire, Nashville, Tenn.; five stepsons, Bobby Allison, Abbs Valley, Charles Allison, Jasper, Ala., Roger Allison and Benny Allison, both of Saltville, and Ronnie Allison, Marion; two sisters, Etta Chapman, Danville, and Ola Henderson, Marion; several nieces and nephews.

Funeral services were conducted at 8 p.m. Wednesday, Aug. 27, in D.R. Henderson Funeral Home Chapel with the Rev. Benny Frye officiating. Graveside services were conducted at 11 a.m. Thursday, Aug. 28, in the Elizabeth Cemetery with the Rev. Benny Frye officiating.

Slagle

Annie Virginia Patton Slagle, age 82, of Rural Retreat, died Wednesday, Aug. 27, 1997 in Smyth County Community Hospital.

She was born in Grayson County, the daughter of the late William I. and Mattie Sue Funk Patton. She was a member of the Asbury United Methodist Church in Cedar Springs and was preceded in death by her husband, Maurice Glen Slagle and a daughter, Myrtle Louise Slagle.

She is survived by one daughter, Frances Slagle of the home; two sisters-in-law, Edna Patton Smith, Independence, and Charlotte Patton, Hillsville; several nieces, nephews and cousins.

Funeral services will be held today, Aug. 30, at 2:30 p.m. at the Asbury United Methodist Church with the Rev. William Perkins and the Rev. Hubert Meadows officiating. Interment will follow in the church cemetery. The body will be taken to the church one hour before service time. The family requests that those who prefer, may make memorials to the Asbury United Methodist Church or to the Rural Retreat Volunteer Emergency Service.

Snider

Lucille Heldreth Snider, age 80, of Rural Retreat, died Wednesday, Aug. 27, 1997 in the Birdmont Health Care Center.

Mrs. Snider was born in Smyth County, the daughter of the late Dennis Wayne and Cora Belle Heldreth Meredith. She was a member of the Grace Lutheran Church in Rural Retreat.

She is survived by two sisters-in-law; several cousins; and a special friend, Gravelle Tarter of Rural Retreat.

Funeral services will be held today, Aug. 30, at 10:30 a.m. at the Lindsey Funeral Home Chapel with Pastor Larry M. Bollinger officiating. Interment followed in the Pleasant Hill Cemetery in Groseclose.

Steele

Charles B. Steele, age 81, died Wednesday, Aug. 27, 1997 at his home in Marion.

Mr. Steele was a coal miner for many years and had worked at the Laurel Springs Dairy.

Survivors include three sons: Jimmy Steele, Bobby Steele, and Larry Steele, all of Marion; three daughters, Janet McGrail, Hot Springs Village, Ark., Joyce Freyman, Yankee Town, Fla., and June Walton, Thomaston, Ga.; one brother, Jessie Steele, Marion; two sisters, Violet Hopkins and Joyce Teaster, both of Marion; 12 grandchildren and three great-grandchildren.

Funeral services were conducted Friday, Aug. 29, at 11 a.m. in Barnett's Funeral Home Chapel with the Rev. Joe Powers officiating. Interment followed in the Laurel Springs Cemetery.

Barnett's Funeral Home was in charge of arrangements.

Tuggle

Emory A. Tuggle Sr., age 60, of Glade Spring, died Thursday, Aug. 28, 1997 in Johnston Memorial Hospital in Abingdon.

He was a native of Russell County and had lived most of his life in Washington County. He was preceded in death by his parents, Lem and Lou Ella Tuggle, and one sister, Rosalie Surber.

He was a member of McCall's Gap Presbyterian Church and a U.S. Army veteran.

Survivors include his wife, Opal Irene Tuggle; three sons, Richard Tuggle, Dwight Tuggle and Emory A. Tuggle Jr., all of Glade Spring; eight sisters, Jessie Adams, Eula McGlocklin, Lena Hess and Lola Dixon, all of Chilhowie, Elizabeth Hess, Marion, Florene Tuell, Blountville, Tenn., and Florence Bitkin, address unknown; one daughter-in-law, Ginger Tuggle; several nieces and nephews.

Funeral services will be conducted at 3 p.m. today, Aug. 30, in McCall's Gap Presbyterian Church with the Rev. Eugene Baldwin officiating. Burial will be in Old Glade Presbyterian Cemetery.

Farris Funeral Service in Abingdon is in charge of arrangements.

Walden

Ethen Rain Walden, infant son of Robby and Christina Walden, died Wednesday, Aug. 27, 1997 in the Medical College of Virginia Hospital, Richmond.

Survivors in addition to his parents are his paternal grandparents, Mr. and Mrs. Danny Keesee, Churchroad; his paternal grandfather, Robert Walden, Bristol; his maternal grandmother, Robin Morrison, Abingdon; his paternal great-grandfather, Thomas W. Walden, Saltville; his paternal great-grandparents, Mr. and Mrs. Deward Clear, Meadowview; his maternal great-grandparents, Robert and Peggy Fugate, Meadowview; his paternal great-great-grandparents, Mr. and Mrs. Marvin Clear, Glade Spring; one aunt.

Funeral services will be conducted at 11 a.m. today, Aug. 30, in Farris Funeral Chapel with the Rev. David Critcher officiating. Burial will be in Forest Hills Memory Gardens in Abingdon.

Farris Funeral Service is in charge of arrangements.
