Smith
John Reeves Smith, age 70, of Independence, died Thursday, Oct. 2, 1997 at Twin County Regional Hospital, Galax.
He was born Oct. 30, 1926 at Independence to Oscar O. Sr., and Ruth Reeves Smith.
Mr.
Smith was a graduate of Virginia Polytechnic Institute & State University. He was a member of First United Methodist Church of Independence, a World War II veteran of the U.S. Army, and a life member of Grayson County VFW Post #7726, having served two tenures as commander of the post.
He was a retired Agriculture teacher having taught at Marion High School and Independence High School, a lifelong farmer and avid horseman and trainer. He was a well-known livestock judge, in his work with students showing livestock in a wide area of the state, always participating in shows at the Virginia State Fair.

Smith was loyal and devoted to his family and community.
Surviving are his wife, Nancy Phipps Smith; four daughters and sons-in-law, Dr. Marianne Smith, Worcester, Mass., Melinda and David Isner, Sparta, N.C., Martha and Douglas Cox, Gray, Tenn., and Marci and Lance Hart, Denver, Colo.; four grandchildren, Perry Isner, Evan Isner, Luke Cox and

Funeral services were conducted Monday, Oct. 6, at 11 a.m. in First United Methodist Church of Independence with the Rev. Brian Miller and the Rev. Shelly Wilson officiating. Interment followed in Independence Cemetery. military rites were conducted at the graveside by Grayson County VFW Post #7726. In lieu of flowers, the family suggests memorial contributions be made to the Independence Rescue Squad, P.O. Box 607, Independence, VA 24348.

Buchanan
Mary Rachel Buchanan, age 82, died Thursday, Oct. 9, 1997 at her home in Saltville.
She was a member of New Cove United Methodist Church and was the widow of Paddy Buchanan.
Survivors include one son and daughter-in-law, David "Mac" and Pat Buchanan, Saltville; one daughter and son-in-law, Paddie and Garland Scott, Marion; one brother, Richard "Topsy" McGhee, Saltville; seven sisters, Annie Sanders, Saltville, Hazel Ford, Dora McAllister, Laura Blevins, Mixie McAllister and Betty Bise, all of Chilhowie, and Joyce Blevins, Marion; two grandchildren, Garland Scott III and Amy Lynn Scott; two great-grandchildren, Hannah E. Scott and Ashlyn L. Scott; one sister-in-law, Rosie McGhee.
Funeral services will be conducted at 2 p.m. today, Oct. 11, in Ridgedale United Methodist Church with burial in Ridgedale Cemetery.

Lambert
Mary Katherine Shupe Lambert, age 82, died Tuesday, Oct. 7, 1997 in the Francis Marion Manor.
Mrs. Lambert was born July 13, 1915 to the late James and Celia Jane Shupe in Washington County. She lived most of her life in Smyth County.
She attended the Valley View Baptist Church and was active in the Senior Citizens group in Marion.
She was preceded in death by her husband, James Lambert; two brothers, one sister, and three nephews.
Survivors include two sisters, Sarah Gowins, Marion, and Laura Sexton, Rising Sun, Md.; five stepchildren; several nieces and nephews, great-nieces and great-nephews and great-great-nieces and great-great-nephews.
Funeral services were held at 11 a.m. Thursday, Oct. 9, in Barnett's Funeral Home Chapel with the Rev. Adam Love officiating. Interment followed in Roselawn Cemetery.

Miller
Margaret Isabelle Miller, age 85, died Thursday, Oct. 9, 1997 at her home in Glade Spring.
She was a lifelong resident of the Glade Spring area and was the widow of S.G. "Sam" Miller.
She was a member of Little Rock Baptist Church.
Survivors include two stepsons, Dewart Miller and Brent Miller, both of Marion; one stepdaughter, June Buchanan, Marion; one sister, Louise Miller, Glade Spring; two grandchildren.
Graveside services will be conducted at 2 p.m. today, Oct. 11, in Old Glade Presbyterian Cemetery with the Rev. Mahlon Wyatt and the Rev. Buster Mullins officiating. The family will receive friends from noon to 1:30 p.m. today at Farris Funeral Home in Abingdon. Flowers will be accepted or contributions may be made to the American Cancer Society, 165 East Main St., Abingdon, VA 24210.

Gladys V. Walls, age 73, died Wednesday, Oct. 8, 1997 at her home in Konnarock.
She was a native of Washington County and a member of Konnarock Baptist Church. She was preceded in death by her parents, Emmett John Pugh and Bessie Carolyn Yates Pugh; two brothers, Cecil Pugh and Robert Pugh.
Survivors include three sisters, Lura Trivett, Rural Retreat, Arleen Hayes, Konnarock, and Mary Shumate, Boothwyn, Penn.; two brothers, Paul Pugh, Bristol, and Joseph Pugh, Kirkwood, Penn.; several nieces and nephews.
Funeral services will be conducted at 2 p.m. today, Oct. 11, in Konnarock Baptist Church with the Rev. Rick Cuddy and the Rev. Homer Fritz officiating. Burial will be in Azen Cemetery.

West
Glenn Edward West, age 92, died Wednesday, Oct. 8, 1997 in Smyth County Community Hospital.
Mr. West worked in the Jewel Ridge Mines for several years while a young man. He was employed with Smyth Home Construction for over 30 years and worked as a contract carpenter and a cabinet maker in Vero Beach, Fla. He was a member of the Zion Hill United Methodist Church.
He was preceded in death by three brothers, Eugene West, Carl West, and Luther West, and one sister, Bertha West.
He is survived by his wife, Trula West, Marion; one sister, Ada Wright, Meadowview; one brother, Russell West, Marion; several nieces and nephews.
Funeral services will be conducted today, Oct. 11, at 11 a.m. in Zion Hill United Methodist Church with the Rev. Carol Ferguson and the Rev. Fred Parker officiating. The body will be taken to the church one hour prior to the service to lie in state. Interment will follow in the West Cemetery.

Maxwell
Donald W. Maxwell, age 82, of Roaring Gap, N.C., and formerly of Independence, died Monday, Oct. 13, 1997 at Alleghany Memorial Hospital, Sparta, N.C.
He was born Nov. 11, 1914 at Deer Lodge, Mont. He was a retired Lieutenant Colonel, U.S. Air Force, with 21 years of service. He was preceded in death by his parents, Edward and Esther Truog Maxwell.
He is survived by his wife, Valeria Maxwell of the home; one son, Tom Maxwell of Independence; one daughter, Shawn Bell, Durham, N.C.; two grandchildren, Brad and Andrew Maxwell, Independence; two stepsons, Dr. James Thompson III, and John Thompson, both of Richmond; two stepdaughters, Dr. Charlotte Campbell, Goldsboro, N.C., and Lou Voelker, Overland Park, Kansas; one sister, Elizabeth Maxwell, Kansas City, Mo.
A graveside service will be conducted today, Oct. 15, at 11 a.m. at Shiloh Cemetery in Sparta, N.C., with the Rev. Fred E. Jennings officiating. In lieu of flowers, family suggests memorial contributions be made to Cherry Lane Fire Dept., First Responders, P.O. Box 162, Roaring Gap, N.C. 28668.
