Shipley

Ann Keith Shipley, age 60, of Bristol, died Thursday, Oct. 23, 1997 in Johnston Memorial Hospital in Abingdon.

She was a native of Saltville, a beauty consultant and a member of Fellowship Chapel.

Survivors include her husband, R.L. "Bob" Shipley; two sons, Mark Holmes, Bristol, Tenn., and Bennie Holmes, Bristol; one stepdaughter, Susan Shipley, Bristol; three stepsons, Lynn Shipley, Kingsport, Tenn., Ronnie Shipley, Charlotte, N.C., and Scott Shipley, Bristol, Tenn.; four grandchildren; seven step-grandchildren.

Funeral services were conducted at 3 p.m. Monday, Oct. 27, in Weaver Funeral Home Chapel with the Rev. Scott Price officiating. Burial was in Mountain View Cemetery.

Weaver Funeral Home in Bristol was in charge of arrangements.

Walters

Melissa Sue Walters, age 20, died Tuesday, Oct. 28, 1997 in the Bristol Regional Medical Center from injuries received in an automobile accident.

She is survived by her mother and stepfather, Denice and Dave Moore of Marion; her father, Larry Walters of Chilhowie; one sister, Casey Moore of Marion; three half-sisters, Wendy Walters, Amanda Walters and Amber Walters, all of Chilhowie; her grandparents, Lewis and Gladys Haga of Marion, Clarence and Betty Sue Moore of Marion, and Johnny and Emma Walters of Chilhowie; a special friend, Troy Fisher of Marion; several aunts, uncles and cousins.

Funeral services will be held Thursday, Oct. 30, at 11 a.m. at Seaver- Brown Chapel with burial in the West Cemetery. The family will receive friends tonight from 7 to 9 at Seaver- Brown Chapel.

Seaver- Brown Funeral Service is in charge of arrangements.

Davenport

Mary Cox Davenport, age 64, died Wednesday, Oct. 29, 1997 at her home in Glade Spring.

She was a lifelong resident of Washington County and attended Laurel United Methodist Church, Damascus.

She was preceded in death by her first husband, Clyde Cox Jr., and her second husband, Charles Everett Davenport.

Survivors include three daughters, Joyce Ann Widener, Glade Spring, Linda Taylor, Mountain City, Tenn., and Judy Gentry, Laurel Bloomery, Tenn.; four sisters, Ruth Teaters and Ruby Bosley, both of Chilhowie, Gray Dishman, Glade Spring, and Shirley Gainer, Columbia, Penn.; four brothers, Ben Heath and John Heath, both of Glade Spring, June Heath, Columbia, Penn., and Ed Heath, Chilhowie; seven grandchildren; two great-grandchildren; several nieces and nephews.

Funeral services will be conducted today, Nov. 1, at 2 p.m. in Johnson Funeral Home Chapel with the Rev. Mahlon Wyatt and the Rev. Harry Layell officiating. Burial will be in Rush Creek Cemetery.

Johnson Funeral Home in Damascus is in charge of arrangements.

Doss

Dennis R. Doss, age 70, of Damascus, died Sunday, Oct. 26, 1997 in the Wellmont Hospice Center, Bristol, Tenn.

Mr. Doss was a son of the late Charles Clifton and Rosa Lee Spriggs Doss. He was a native of Damascus and was preceded in death by two brothers and two sisters. He was retired from the Damascus Hosiery Mill after 30 years of service.

Surviving are his wife, Faye Clark Doss of the home; one daughter, Vickie Doss, Damascus; two sisters, Wanda Doss, Damascus, and Wilma Ballou, Abingdon; one aunt, Yada Rosenbaum, Norfolk; two special friends, Agnes and Gregory Widner, Damascus; a sister-in-law, Pearl Doss, Pulaski; several nieces and nephews.

Memorial services were conducted at 10 a.m. Wednesday, Oct. 29, in the Mock Cemetery with the Rev. Don Lasley officiating. Memorials may be made to the American Cancer Society or Wellmont Hospice of Bristol.

Johnson Funeral Home in Damascus was in charge of arrangements.

Dow

Dr. Loren Woodbury Dow, age 82, died Wednesday, Oct. 29, 1997 at his home in Emory. He was a native of Camden, Maine.

He was Professor Emeritus of Sociology at Emory & Henry College and a member of the New England Annual Conference of the United Methodist Church.

Following his graduation from Camden High School, he attended Gordon College in Boston for two years, received a bachelor of arts degree from the University of Maine where he was elected to Phi Beta Kappa honor society and received his Divinity degree from Bangor Theological Seminary, Bangor, Maine, and his doctor of philosophy degree from Boston University.

He was ordained and joined the Maine Conference of the Methodist Church in 1940, and served parishes in South Penobscot/Brooksville, Mattawamkeag and Dexter.

In Massachusetts, he pastored churches in Wareham, West Springfield, Wellfleet/Eastham, and in the Central Pennsylvania Conference Service the Lakemont Church, Altoona, and taught in Springfield College and in Suffolk University, Boston.

He joined the faculty of Emory & Henry in 1949, and retired after 30 years of teaching in the religion and sociology departments.

While teaching in the college, he was a visiting preacher in many churches in the Holston Conference of United Methodist Churches and after his retirement he supplied several Presbyterian and United Methodist churches, principally in the Marion and Rich Valley areas.

He was a member of several professional organizations including a Fellowship in the American Sociological Society and he presented papers and chaired meetings in professional societies. He was the author of numerous professional publications.

Survivors include his wife, Dr. Alice Staples Dow.

Funeral services will be conducted at 2 p.m. today, Nov. 1, in the Memorial Chapel of Emory & Henry College with the Rev. William Mooney, the Rev. Kathie Wilson-Parker and the Rev. David St. Clair officiating. Burial will be in Holston Conference Cemetery. In lieu of flowers, it is suggested that donations be made to the Loren Dow Scholarship Fund, c/o Emory & Henry College, P.O. Box 947, Emory, VA 24317.

Farris Funeral Service in Abingdon is in charge of arrangements.

Farmer

Donald Ray Farmer, age 46, died Monday, Oct. 27, 1997 in Smyth County Community Hospital.

He was a former resident of Dickenson County and a member of Atkins First Church of God.

Survivors include one son, Rick Farmer, Clintwood; one daughter, Wanda Farmer, Clintwood; two brothers, Clifford Farmer and Roger Farmer, both of Clintwood; two nieces.

Funeral services were conducted Wednesday, Oct. 29, at 11 a.m. in Pound River Church of the Brethren with Ron Whitner, Ron Leonard and Cline Sluss officiating. Burial was in Rakes Cemetery in Clintwood. In lieu of flowers, donations may be sent to Rick Farmer, P.O. Box 277, Clintwood, VA 24228.

Mullins Funeral Home in Clintwood was in charge of arrangements.

Moore

Monte Greg Moore, age 48, died Wednesday, Oct. 29, 1997 in Johnston Memorial Hospital, Abingdon.

He was an employee of Titan Wheel Company of Saltville.

Survivors include his wife, Doris Sturgill Moore; one son, Michael Wayne Moore, Saltville; his father, Wilmer Moore, Saltville; four brothers, Larry Moore and Steve Moore, both of Saltville, Jeff Moore and Roger Moore, both of Chilhowie; several nieces and nephews.

Funeral services were conducted at 1 p.m. Friday, Oct. 31, in D.R. Henderson Funeral Home Chapel with the Rev. Tim Surber and the Rev. Bill Delp officiating. Burial was in Mount Rose Cemetery.

D.R. Henderson Funeral Home in Saltville was in charge of arrangements.

Rolen

Dorothy Lee Atherton Rolen, age 68, died Tuesday, Oct. 28, 1997 in Henry Ford Hospital, Detroit, Mich. She was a native of Saltville and had lived most of her life in Michigan. She was the widow of David L. Rolen. She was also preceded in death by her parents, Harry L. and Irene Atherton.

Survivors include one daughter and son-in-law, Diane and Harv Smith, Southgate, Mich.; two sons and daughters-in-law, Jeff and Susan Rolen, Wise, and Mark and Debbie Rolen, Romulus, Mich.; one brother, Harry L. Atherton, Romulus, Mich.; two sisters, Bernice Pennington, Taylor, Mich., and Joan Atherton, Glade Spring; nine grandchildren; two great-grandchildren; several nieces and nephews.

Funeral services were conducted at 11 a.m. Friday, Oct. 31, in D.R. Henderson Funeral Home Chapel with Jeff Rolen officiating. Burial was in Elizabeth Cemetery. In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be made to Camp Bethel, P.O. Box 390, Wise, VA 24293.
