PINEY FLATS -- Joseph Witt, 21, of 2884 DeVault Bridge Road, died Tuesday, Jan. 28, 1997 from injuries received in an automobile accident near Richmond.
Survivors include his father, Grady Witt, Florida; his mother, Josephine King, Stafford, Va.; one brother, David Witt, Bristol, Virginia; one half-brother, William King Jr., Stafford; and his maternal grandmother, Rose Hilte, Glen Burnie, Md.
Weaver Funeral Home is in charge.

Barney D. Adams
NORTON -- Barney Dewayne Adams, 39, died Thursday, Jan. 29, 1997, at his home.
He was a lifelong resident of Norton, and was of the Baptist faith.
Survivors include his mother, Phyllis Adams Freeman, Norton; his step-father, James Everett Freeman Sr., two step-sisters, Janet Boatright, Norton, and Carol Phillips, Wise; one step-brother, James E. Freeman Jr., Pound, and his step-grandmother, Ella Freeman, Norton; and several aunts, uncles and cousins.

Sarah G. Barker
Sarah Evalee Goodman Barker, of Bristol, Virginia, died Thursday, Jan. 30, 1997, in Bristol Regional Medical Center.
She was a lifelong resident of the Bristol area and a member of the Blountville Chapter No. 419 Order of the Eastern Star.
She was a member of Reynolds Memorial United Methodist Church and prior to her illness was an active member of the Henley Sunday school class.
She was the widow of Issac C. Barker.
Survivors include two daughters, Mrs. Herschel R. (Frances) Stevens, Bristol, Virginia and Mrs. A. Daniel (Evelyn) Cole, Roanoke; one son, Lewis A. Barker, Kingsport; three sisters, Mrs. Hazel Moretz, Bristol, Virginia, Mrs. Dorothy Weaver and Mrs. Gladys Moody, both of Kingsport; seven grandchildren; and ten great-grandchildren.

Betty J. Dixon
Johnson CITY -- Betty Jean "B.J." Dixon, 57, of 303 Woodbriar Drive, died Wednesday, Jan, 29, 1997, at her home.
She was the widow of Fred Dixon.
She was a native of Bristol, Virginia and had lived for several years in Bluff City and Johnson City.
Survivors include two sons, Marty Shaffer and Greg Shaffer, both of Bristol, Virginia; her mother, Meda Della Peters, Piney Flats; one sister, Nancy Lilley, Monroe, N.C.; one brother, David Peters, Bristol, Tennessee; one grandson; three stepsons, Freddie Dixon, Naples, Fla., James Dixon, Bluff City, Tenn. and Mark Dixon, Memphis; two step-grandchildren; and several nieces and nephews.
Oakley-Cook Funeral Home is in charge.

Marie B. Fields
ABINGDON -- Mrs. Marie Bland Fields, 69, of 617 Hurt Street, died Thursday, Jan. 30, 1997, in Johnston Memorial Hospital.
She was a native of Emmett, Tenn., and had lived in Portsmouth, Va., for 30 years before moving to Abingdon in 1985.
She was a member of Denton Valley Baptist Church.
Survivors include her husband, Lee Roy Bland; two daughters, Sandra K. Andrew, Belhaven, N.C., and Kathy VanDyck, Abingdon; one son, Robert Edward Fields, Portsmouth; three sisters, Margaret Smith and Frances Shortt, both of Abingdon, and Nancy Hawk, Gray, Tenn.; one brother, Jake Bland, Glade Spring; five granddaughters; one great-grandchild; and several nieces and nephews.
Campbell Funeral Home, is in charge.

Mary B. Fletcher
APPALACHIA, Va. -- Mary Louise Byrd Fletcher, 93, of 126 Harding St., died Thursday, Jan. 30, 1997, in Heritage Hall, Wise.
She was a native of Jonesborough, Tenn. and was the widow of John Harrison Fletcher.
She was a member of Appalachia Presbyterian Church.
Survivors include two sons, Dr. James Harrison Fletcher, Wise, and Dr. John David Fletcher, Asheville, N.C.; four granddaughters, Ms. Elizabeth Byrd Fletcher, Mrs. William M. Kerns Jr., Mrs. John C. Harvie, all of Richmond, and Mrs. Daniel Keane, Kernersville, N.C.; one great-grandson; and two great-granddaughters.

Robert H. Grigsby
PENNINGTON GAP -- Robert Herman Grigsby, 85, died Thursday, Jan. 30, 1997, at his home.
He graduated from Lebanon State School, worked for Virginia Department of Highways as a file clerk, traffic census clerk, and payroll//timekeeper.
He joined the U.S. Air Corps and followed that with a stint as a semi-pro baseball player in the Greenbrier League at Quinwood, W.Va.
He attended King College in Bristol, Tennessee, and then returned to the Virginia Department of Highways as an equipment operator, then as construction inspector.
In 1937 he came to Lee County and was employed by Blue Diamond Coal Company of Bonny Blue, Va., as payroll clerk and scrip writer for over two years.
He was also employed with Virginia-Lee Company and United Collieries as office manager near St. Charles, Va. Virginia-Lee Company promoted him to general manager and secretary treasurer of the company.
He became a director of Lee Bank and Trust in 1963 and later became chairman of the board.
He was elected president of the bank in 1991. He was also a director of the Virginia YMCA for over 25 years and served two terms as its president. He was also a trustee for Boys' Home, Inc. Covington, Va.
He was a member of Christ Episcopal Church, Big Stone Gap having served as senior warden, junior warden and was currently trustee of the church property.
He served two terms on the executive board of the Diocese of S.W. Virginia. He also served as director of Bishop Phillips Diocese Recreation Center at Hemlock Haven near Marion. He also served two terms on the board of the regional Lonesome Pine Library.
Survivors include his wife, Jean Hill Grigsby; one daughter, Jennie Grigsby Stewart, Greeneville, Tenn.; one niece; six nephews; four great nieces; six great nephews; several great-great-nephews and great-great-nieces; one brother, Dr. William C. Grigsby, Jr. of Bristol, Tennessee.

Genetta E. Horne
CLEARWATER, Fla. -- Mrs. Genetta Eva Horne, 76, of 1487 Fairmont St., died Tuesday, Jan. 28, 1997, in Clearwater Community Hospital.
She was a native of Buchanan County, Va., until moving to Florida in 1963.
She had made her home with Jerry and Jimmie Horne and was a member of the Church of God.
Survivors include two half-sisters, Trula Ratliff, Riverview, Fla. and Lorrane Ketterman, Baltimore, Md.; two half-brothers, Leondis Horne, Jewell Ridge, and McClellon Horne, Tazewell; and nine special godchildren.
Buchanan Funeral Service, Keen Mountain, is in charge.

E. Howard Johnson
ABINGDON -- E. Howard Johnson, 84, of Lee Highway, died Thursday, Jan. 30, 1997, in Cedar Lawn Convalescent Home, Abingdon.
He was a native of Washington County and was in the real estate and auction business until his retirement in 1982.
He was a member of Abingdon Baptist Church.
He was preceded in death by his wife, Nell Easterly Johnson.
Survivors include two sons, Johnny W. Johnson and Eddie A. Johnson, both of Abingdon; one step-daughter, Peggy E. Schaffer, Abingdon; three step-sons, Billy H. Easterly, Wallace, Va., Frank E. Easterly, Bristol, Tennessee and Charles L. Easterly, Kingsport; one sister, Dorothy Kelly, Abingdon; one brother, G.C. Johnson, Glade Spring; 16 grandchildren; 21 great-grandchildren; and several nieces and nephews.

Garland R. Lowe
ST. PAUL, Va. -- Garland Radford Lowe, 96, died Wednesday, Jan. 29, 1997, in Appalachian Regional Hospital, Wise.
He was of the Baptist faith and was an engineer for the old Clinchfield Railroad for 50 years.
Survivors include his wife, Winnie "Topsy" Lowe; one sister, Mrs. Hattie Ferrell, Richlands, Va.; three step-daughters, Judy Butler, Jonesborough, Tenn., Betty Bradley, Knoxville, Faye Kilgore, Big Stone Gap; two step-sons, Eddie Wayne Dickenson, Castlewood, and Robert Glenn Dickenson, Rogersville, Tenn.
Huff-Cook Funeral Home, is in charge.
