Mary E. Lawrie
Mrs. Mary Eaton Lawrie, 80, of 801 Piedmont Ave., Bristol, Va., died Thursday, Jan. 30, 1997, in Bristol Regional Medical Center.
She was a native of Geneva, N.Y., and had lived in Sergeantsville, N.J., before moving to Abingdon in 1967, then to Bristol seven years ago.
She was of the Christian faith, attended Roberts Beach School, graduated from William Smith College, Geneva, in 1938 and was a volunteer and former officer with the American Red Cross.
She was a member of the Daughters of the American Revolution, Fort Chiswell Chapter and was the widow of Archer Lawrie.
Survivors include three sons, Peter Eaton Lawrie, Bristol, Virginia, Willis Patten Lawrie, Hardy, Va., and James Woodman Lawrie, Marion; one sister, Mrs. Elizabeth Eaton White, Geneva; two brothers, Dr. Stephen W. Eaton, Allegany, N.Y., and Elon Howard Eaton Jr., Olmsted Falls, Ohio; and two grandchildren.
Campbell Funeral Home is in charge.

Hazel S. Lawson
COEBURN -- Hazel S. Lawson, 78, died Thursday, Jan. 30, 1997, in Norton Community Hospital, Norton.
She attended the Spoken Word Tabernacle.
Survivors include six sons, John Lawson, Truman Lawson, Ralph Lawson, Carl Lawson and Carter Lawson, all of Coeburn, and Roger Lawson, Wise; four daughters, Burita Winebarger, Clara Moore, Dorothy Poston and Jearline Maine, all of Coeburn; two step-daughters, Goldie Bolden, Radford, and Lola Ball, Coeburn; two brothers, Earl Salyers, Sandusky, Ohio and Hershel Salyers, Coeburn; one sister, Edith Adkins, Coeburn; 49 grandchildren; and 53 great-grandchildren.
Sturgill Funeral Home, Coeburn, is in charge.

Maggie C.V. Ring
ST. PAUL -- Maggie C.V. Meade Ring, 101, died Friday, Jan. 31, 1997, at the home of her daughter in Vicco, Ky., where she had lived for several years.
She was a native of Russell County, a member of First Baptist Church, St. Paul and a member of The Golden Circle Sunday school class.
She was the widow of Samuel H. "Sam" Ring.
Survivors include one daughter, Mrs. Arnold (Sandra Jean) Branson Jr., Vicco; one son, James H. Ring, Bristol, Tennessee; seven grandchildren; eight great-grandchildren; three great-great-grandchildren; and several nieces and nephews.
Castlewood Funeral Home is in charge.

Carl Scott
MARION -- Carl "Buck" Scott, 71, died Thursday, Jan. 30, 1997, in Francis Marion Manor Nursing Home.
He was a veteran of World War II serving with the United States Marine Corps.
He was a member of Furnace Hill Lutheran Church and was retired from Brunswick Corporation after 37 years of service.
Survivors include his wife, Margaret E. Scott; one son, Lawrence Eugene Scott, Roanoke; three daughters, Patricia "Pat" Bowman, Barbara Ann Anderson and Rebecca "Becky" Scott, all of Marion; nine grandchildren; and one great-grandchild; one sister, Dorthy Haga, Plainsville, Tenn.; and several nieces and nephews.
Seaver- Brown Funeral Service is in charge.

Martha Smith
RAVEN, Va. -- Mrs. Martha "Agnes" Smith, 74, of the Red Root section, died Friday, Jan. 31, 1997, in a Richlands hospital.
She was a native of Tazewell County and was of the Baptist faith.
She was the widow of Leck Smith.
Survivors include four daughters, Judy Rosado, California, Peggy Louise Murray, of the home, Margaret Shelton, Roanoke, and Diane Griffith, Raven; one son, Edward Smith, Texas; one sister, Margaret Meadows, Bandy, Va.; one brother, John Vandyke, War, W.Va.; 14 grandchildren; and seven great-grandchildren.
Singleton Funeral Service, Cedar Bluff, is in charge.

Hurthel A. Thomas
RICH VALLEY, Va. -- Hurthel Angelo Thomas, 93, died Friday, Jan. 31, 1997, in Smyth County Community Hospital, Marion.
He was a member of Goodman's Chapel and a self-employed farmer for many years.
Survivors include his wife, Margaret Buchanan Thomas; three granddaughters, Linda Eller, Betty Sue Griffey and Carolyn Pauley; several nieces and nephews; five great-grandchildren; and one great-great-grandchild.

Eli W. Barker
MARION -- Eli W. "Dub" Barker, 72, died Monday, Dec. 29, 1997, at his home.
Survivors include his wife, Fannie Alice Martin Barker; two daughters, Anne Greer, Apopka, Fla., and Fran Horne, Wytheville; five sisters, Stella Craft, Jean Gillispie, Nellie Smith and Goldie Carpenter, all of Marion, and Allene Roop, Bristol;. three grandchildren; and one great-grandchild.
Barnett's Funeral Home, Marion, is in charge.

James D. Brown Sr.
DAMASCUS -- James Dailey Brown Sr., 63, of Whispering Pine Lane, died Tuesday, Dec. 30, 1997, in Johnston Memorial Hospital, Abingdon.
He was a native of Washington County and had lived in High Point, N.C., for many years before returning to Washington County in 1982.
He was a U.S. Marine Corps veteran of the Korean War, a member of the American Legion and was of the Baptist faith.
Survivors include three daughters, Annette Oxendine, Glade Spring, Carol Helmstetler, Damascus, and Rita Brown, Bristol, Virginia; four sons, Bruce Brown and Terry Brown, both of Bristol, Tennessee, Tim Brown, Baltimore, and James Dailey Brown Jr., Damascus; one sister, Lillian Rouse, Glade Spring; 16 grandchildren; and several nieces and nephews.
Johnson Funeral Home, Damascus, is in charge.

Truma Card
NORTON -- Truma Card, 66, died Wednesday, Dec. 31, 1997, at her home.
She was a retired LPN associated with various health and medical agencies in the area and was of the Protestant faith.
Survivors include her husband, Kenneth L. Card, Norton; one son, Kenneth R. Card, Clinchburg, Va.; her mother, Ella J. Maples, Dayton, Ohio; two sisters, Freida Mullins, Cincinnati, and Lana Burchette, Wabash, Ind.; two brothers, Merle Maples, Wabash, Ind., and Aurbin Maples, Dayton, Ohio; two grandchildren; and two great-grandchildren.

James D. Cornett
MOUNTAIN CITY -- James Daniel Cornett, 13, of Route 1, Hiltons, formerly of Mountain City, died Monday, Dec. 29, 1997, in a boating accident.
His father, Michael Wayne Cornett, and his brother, Michael Paul Cornett, both died in the same accident.
Survivors include his mother, Mary Elizabeth "Libby" Cornett; his paternal grandparents, Elizabeth Juanita Cornett, Mountain City, and Harold Floyd Cornett Sr., Mountain City; his maternal grandparents, Lois Evitt, Canal Point, Fla., and L.C. Moore, Bellview, Florida; and several aunts, uncles and cousins.

Michael P. Cornett
MOUNTAIN CITY -- Michael Paul Cornett, 16, of Route 1, Hiltons, formerly of Mountain City, died Monday, Dec. 29, 1997, in a boating accident.
His father, Michael Wayne Cornett, and his brother, James Daniel Cornett, both died in the same accident.
Survivors include his mother, Mary Elizabeth "Libby" Moore Cornett; his paternal grandparents, Elizabeth Juanita Cornett, Mountain City, and Harold Floyd Cornett Sr., Mountain City; his maternal grandparents, Lois Evitt, Canal Point, Fla., and L.C. Moore, Bellview, Fla.;. and several aunts, uncles and cousins.

His sons, Michael Paul Cornett and James Daniel Cornett, both died in the same accident.
Survivors include his wife, Mary Elizabeth "Libby" Moore Cornett; his mother, Mrs. Elizabeth Juanita Cornett, Mountain City; his father, Harold Floyd Cornett Sr., Mountain City; one brother, Harold Floyd "Bugs" Cornett Jr., Mountain City; two sisters, Mrs. Chuck (Debbie) Buckle, Atlanta, and Mrs. Eddie (Joy) Eldreth, Mountain City; and several aunts, uncles, nieces, nephews, and cousins.
