Virgil F. Smith
Virgil F. Smith, 83, of Orleans died May 28, 2009, in Lebanon, New Hampshire.
Mr. Smith was born March 15, 1926, in Newport, a son of Ernest and Gladys (Green) Smith.
On December 26, 1946, he married
Charlotte Houghaboom.
He was a manager at the Beacon Feed Store in Orleans.
He was a longtime member of the Orleans Country Club, Union Lodge 106 of Free and Accepted Masons, American Legion Post 23, and the Lions Club, all in Orleans. He was a member of the Orleans Federated Church and the International Association of Approved Basketball Officials.
He is survived by his wife, Charlotte Smith, of Orleans; by his children, David Smith and his wife, Debbie, of Orleans and Randy Smith and his wife, Pam, of Orleans; by grandchildren: Aaron Smith and his wife, Janet, of Orleans, Chris Smith and his wife, Shelly, of Irasburg, Corey Smith and his friend, Melissa Fontaine, of Irasburg, Erik Smith of Barton, Sandra Hicks and her husband, Bryon, of Connecticut, and Melissa Durkee and her friend, Greg Madec, of Connecticut; by great-grandchildren: Christen, Erin, Makenzie, Bronson, Alyssa, Ashlyn, and Andrew; by his brother Kermit Smith and his wife, Gloria, of Newport; and by numerous nieces, nephews, and cousins.
He was predeceased by his brother Milton Smith; by his sister Erlene Preble; and by his grandson Shawn Smith.
Funeral services will be held at 1 p.m. on Thursday, June 4, at Orleans Federated Church with the Reverend Carol Borland officiating. Friends may call from noon at the church on Thursday until the hour of the funeral.

Committal services for Lawrence Sicard Sr. will be held at 11 a.m. on Saturday, June 6, 2009 at Lakeview cemetery in Westmore.
Joan Ellyn Barry
Joan Ellyn Barry, 74, of Derby, formerly of Arlington, Massachusetts, died in Derby, surrounded by family, after a difficult battle with cancer on June 26, 2009.
Mrs. Barry was born December 6, 1934, in Medford, Massachusetts, a daughter of Carl and Agnes (Johnson) Carlson.
On October 6, 1956, she married
Ronald Earle Barry, who survives her.
She was a hard-working woman throughout most of her lifetime and was recognized as an exceptional administrative assistant, working for some of the most highly regarded doctors in Massachusetts. She worked for more than 20 of those years for the Lahey Clinic in Burlington, Massachusetts. Earlier in her working career she worked for an advertising agency in New York City.
She loved to draw. She had tremendous artistic ability. She kept her drawings private, and only those she was close with were allowed to view her work as she was her own worst critic.
She enjoyed doing New York Times crossword puzzles and drinking Diet Coke. She was an avid reader and a tremendous cook. She loved Sunday morning breakfast at the East Side Restaurant.
She is survived by her husband of 52 years, Ronald Barry, of Derby; by two children, Raymond Barry of Newport and Craig Barry and his wife, Kristi, of Derby; by her granddaughter Madison Barry of Derby; by parents-in-law, Bill and Bonnie Wheeler, of Derby Line; by sister-in-law Merilyn Barry of Derby; by niece Kimberly Flynn and her husband, Keith, of Derby Line; by nephews Kyle Berry and his wife, Gail, of Derby and Kord Barry and his wife, Mary, of Derby; by cousin Eleanor (Carlson) Hutchinson and her husband, David, of Burlington, Massachusetts; and by her collie Shannon, with whom she had a special bond. She had many close, personal friends from near and far and extremely caring neighbors who willingly gave of themselves throughout her illness.
Private services will be held at the convenience of the family.

Edgar Charles Byrd Sr.
Edgar Charles Byrd Sr., 57, died Saturday, June 27, 2009, at his home in Morgan.
Mr. Byrd was born in Burlington on February 12, 1952.
He was predeceased by his parents, Fredrick Sr. and Agnes Byrd.
Survivors include his wife, Trudy E. (Martell) Byrd, of Morgan; their children: Edgar C. Byrd Jr. and his wife, Beth, of Northfield, Christina L. Byrd of East Montpelier, Shawn A. Byrd of Morgan, John S. Byrd and his wife, Cheryl, of Morgan, Justin C. Byrd and his girlfriend, Jaleesa, of Northfield, and Cassandra N. Byrd and her boyfriend, David, of Morgan; by stepchildren: Freedom A. Dukiette of East Montpelier, Jerid D. Whiteley of Barre, and Isaiah R. Whiteley of Northfield; by grandchildren: Brandon L. Burns, Benjamin R. Pretti, Zachary J. Byrd, Dakota A. Byrd, Mandy Dutton, Olida M. Byrd, and Asianna R. Whiteley; by siblings: Joe, George, Jimmy, Bobby, Fred, Tim, Danny, Richard, Mike, Linda, Patty, Robyn, Laurie, Betsy, and Ivonne; by many nieces and nephews; and by many more loved ones.
A celebration of his life with full military honors will be held at his home at 1959 Vermont Route 111 in Morgan on Friday, July 3, at 3 p.m.

Blanche M. Colburn
Blanche M. Colburn, 92, of Newport died peacefully in the arms of her family on June 22, 2009, in Barton.
Mrs. Colburn was born November 3, 1916, in Irasburg, a daughter of William and Clara (Allen) Badger.
On December 8, 1934, she married
Maurice Colburn, who predeceased her.
She was a member of the Church of Jesus Christ of the Latter-day Saints. Everyone who knew her loved her and she will be greatly missed.
She is survived by her children: Joyce Curtis of Irasburg, Terry Colburn and his wife, Brenda, of Barton, Gail Auger and her husband, Philip, of Newport Center, Dick Colburn and his wife, Diana, of Westfield, Cecile Randall and her husband, Charles, of Coventry, Theresa Bonvouloir and her husband, Richard, of Phoenix, Arizona, and Beth Colburn-Weyant and her husband, Christopher, of Derby; by 21 grandchildren; by 16 great-grandchildren; and by several nieces and nephews. She was predeceased by her son Roy Colburn; by her daughter Marilyn Sweeney; and by her sister Betty Lacourse.
Funeral services were held June 25 at the Curtis-Britch Converse-Rushford Memorial Chapel in Newport with President Erik Worthington of the Church of Jesus Christ of the Latter-day Saints officiating. Interment followed at Pleasantview cemetery in Orleans.

Lillian E. Dickerman
Lillian E. Dickerman, 82, beloved wife of Gerald, died in Newport on June 23, 2009.
Mrs. Dickerman was one of four children born to H. Victor and Helen (Davio) Ellsworth on September 6, 1926, in Newport.
She worked for several chain stores when they were still living in Newport.
She was a member of the Morning Star Rebecca Lodge for several years.
She enjoyed playing solitaire, watching her soap operas, cross stitching, and bowling. She was a very active member of her church, its youth activities programs, and the women’s Tuxis Club.
She and her husband enjoyed taking bus tours for several years.
She was always ready and willing to give a helping hand whenever she could, including baking homemade dishes.
She is survived by her husband, Gerald; by her son Richard and his wife, Edna, of Indiana; by her daughter Vickie Counts and her husband, Vanoy, of Florida; by grandchildren: Andrew Dickerman of Indiana, Patricia Sonnier and her husband, Daniel, of Washington, and Robert and his wife, Amanda Counts, of Texas; by great-grandchildren Sarah Sonnier of Washington and Nathaniel Counts of Texas; by several nieces and nephews; and by many friends of the Newport Baptist Church. She was predeceased by her brother Glenn; and by sisters Marguerite Currier and Betty Simpson.
Funeral services were held June 27 at a Curtis-Britch Converse-Rushford Funeral Home in Newport with the Reverend David Lisner officiating. Interment followed at Pine Hill cemetery in Derby.

Barbara E. Gerrow
Barbara E. Gerrow, 71, of Coventry died June 26, 2009, in Barton.
Mrs. Gerrow was born May 20, 1938, in Newport Center, a daughter of William and Augusta (Peters) Blanchard.
She married
Morris Gerrow, who predeceased her in January 1987.
She enjoyed doing word finds and puzzles, gardening, and going to tag sales.
She is survived by five children: William Gerrow and his former wife Barbara Hanson, both of North Troy, Tim Gerrow and his wife, Laura, of Jay, Bryan Gerrow of North Troy, Jeff Gerrow of Derby Line, and Brenda Marchessault and her husband, Pete, of Enosburg; by 11 grandchildren; by three great-grandchildren; by two brothers, Roland Blanchard and his wife, Shirley, of Newport Center and Steve Blanchard of Enosburg; by her twin sister, Bea Spencer, of Canada; by her sister Polly Sweet of Enosburg; and by several nieces and nephews.
A graveside service will be held on Thursday, July 2, at 11 a.m. at the Albany cemetery with the Reverend Paul Prince officiating.

Ronald Edmund Legendre
Ronald Edmund Legendre, 56, of North Troy died June 28, 2009, in Newport.
Mr. Legendre was born March 3, 1953, in Concord, beloved son of Ruth (Young) Legendre.
He was employed as a construction worker for F.R. Lafayette Company of Essex Junction and more recently as a ski lift operator at Jay Peak Resort.
He enjoyed fishing and camping with his family. He was a NASCAR fan. He was a former member of the Peace Corps.
He is survived by his mother, Ruth Legendre, of St. Johnsbury; by his daugher Ginny Paye of Vermont; by three grandchildren: Samantha, Skye, and Gabrielle; by sisters: Ina Francis and her husband, William, of Lowell, Massachusetts, Lori Register and her husband, Dutcher, of St. Augustine, Florida, Anita Guild and her husband, Ed, of Essex Junction, Lisa Merrill and her husband, Raymond, of Ludlow, and Sarah Baker and her husband, John, of Barre; by two stepsisters, Marie Grant and her husband, Russell, of Ocala, Florida, and Shirley Parker and her husband, Leslie, of St. Johnsbury; and by many nieces and nephews.
Services will be held at the convenience of the family.

Shirley Rose Moffatt
Shirley Rose Moffatt, 82, of East Hardwick, a lifelong area resident, died Thursday evening, June 25, 2009, at her home, surrounded by her loving family.
Mrs. Moffatt was born February 12, 1927, in Greensboro, a daughter of John C. and Daisy (Willey) Hunt. She attended Greensboro public schools.
On July 1, 1946, she married
Waldon Peasley Moffatt in Greensboro.
In her earlier years she stayed at home to care for her young children. She later worked for several businesses, including the East Hardwick Creamery, Sprague Electric in Barre for 21 years, and Cabot Creamery. She was a seamstress for CoMart Stitching in East Hardwick and a caregiver for elderly people in the Greensboro and Morrisville areas. She retired in the late-1980s.
She attended Hope Community Church in Walden. She enjoyed cooking, reading, gardening, canning, rug making, and knitting.
Survivors include three sons: Gary Moffatt and his wife, Margaret, of Houlton, Maine, John Moffatt and his wife, Melissa, of Stannard, and James Moffatt of East Hardwick; six daughters: Phyllis Cloutier and her husband, John, and Mary Jean Hill and her husband, Lanny, all of East Hardwick, Elaine LaMadeleine and her husband, Ronald, of Newport, Anne Stevens of Hardwick, Sherry Bowen of Leavenworth, Kansas, and Sandy Davison and her husband, Delton, of Bedford, Massachusetts; 28 grandchildren; 45 great-grandchildren; four great-great-grandchildren; and several cousins. She was predeceased by her parents; by her husband, Waldon, on October 19, 2000; and by brothers Kenneth and Earl Hunt.
Private graveside services were held at the convenience of the family.

Mildred T. Nault
Mildred T. Nault, 54, of Orleans died peacefully on June 27, 2009, in Newport.
For those who knew her, although her body gave out, her spirit remained strong to the very end. The courage and positive outlook she possessed her whole life carried all through her illness. She will be remembered for her kindness, honesty, integrity, compassion, strength, and especially her smile.
Ms. Nault was born December 3, 1954, in Newport, a daughter of Donald and Dorothy (McGrath) Nault.
On August 2, 1985, she married
David Blodgett, who survives her.
She was a manager for the Vermont Dairy Herd Improvement Association. She ran the animal barnyard at the Orleans County Fair for many years.
She held membership with the 4-H Club, and she took in exchange students for seven years.
She was an avid reader and loved family gatherings. She enjoyed gardening and spending time with her cats and dogs.
She is survived by her husband, David Blodgett, of Orleans; by her host daughter Sully Orellana; by her parents, Donald and Dorothy Nault, of Newport Center; by her brothers Forrest Nault and his wife, Keely, of Maryland and Vernon Nault of Newport Center; by sisters Ramona Nault and her husband, Bob, of Sutton and Donna Lightly and her husband, Steve, of Pennsylvania; by nieces and nephews: Shawn, Elizabeth, Matthew, Jessica, Violet, Jeremy, Jesse, Cody, Dana, Shawna, and Layla; by her parents-in-law, Warren and Virginia Blodgett, of Irasburg; by sisters-in-law: Barbara Russell of Newport, Cathy Blodgett of Irasburg, Patty Tarbox and her husband, Steve, of Orleans, Shirley Moulton and her husband, Dwight, of Charleston; by brothers-in-law Dennis Blodgett of Irasburg and Neil Blodgett and his wife, Christine, of Irasburg; and by nieces and nephews: Jason, Nick, Chris, Corinne, Nicole, Neil, Ashley, Myah, Talon, and Max.
On July 1 an open house will be held from 1 to 4 p.m. followed by a celebration service at Ms. Nault’s home at 197 East Street in Orleans. Immediately following the service burial will take place at Pleasantview cemetery in Orleans.

David M. Willis
David M. Willis, 40, beloved husband of Marley Willis, died June 24, 2009, at his home in Westfield.
Mr. Willis was born June 10, 1969, in Newport, a son of Dennis and Linda (Collins) Willis.
On January 1, 2004, he married
Marley Kittredge, who survives him.
He enjoyed motorcycling, using his utility vehicle, working on cars, helping others, hunting, and fishing.
In 1990 he joined the Vermont Army National Guard in Newport on an armored crew as a tank commander. He served until 2005. In 2005 he joined the Vermont Air National Guard and was on the 158th Fighter Wing until his death.
He is survived by his wife, Marley Willis, of Westfield; by six children: Ashley Yarborough and Heather Willis of Scranton, South Carolina, Caitlyn Willis of Newport, Michelle Dion and Ken LaBounty of Underhill, Tiffany Hamelin of Westfield, and Mat Wing of Derby; by three grandchildren: Trenton, Tara, and Gabrielle; by his parents, Dennis and Linda Willis, of Troy; by his brother Richard Willis and Suzanne of Newport; by his grandmother Lillian Willis of Newport; by aunts, uncles, nieces, nephews, and cousins; and by special friends: Chad, Mike, Casey, and Pete.
A graveside service with full military honors was held June 29 at the Troy cemetery with Chaplain Lieutenant Colonel Calvin Kemp officiating.
