Marion Lillian Darling

Marion Lillian Darling, 73, died on September 8, 2010, at her home in Glover.
She was born in Upper Wards Creek, New Brunswick, on January 30, 1937. She moved to the U.S. in 1956 where she began to raise her children. She married Russell Darling on March 6, 1965, and moved to Glover in 1969.
Mrs. Darling worked for many years at the Candlepin restaurant in Barton before returning to work on the Darling farm on Dexter Mountain until she retired due to ill health.
She loved spending time with her children and grandchildren. She enjoyed knitting, embroidering, and making cookies with Abigail. She loved going to Florida in the winter in her RV and returning to Vermont in the summer for the horse and pony pulls at the Barton fair every August.
She is survived by her husband, Russell Darling, of Glover; by her children: Gerry English and his wife, Michele, of Glover, Sherry Provencher and her husband, Butch, of Newport, Pamela Massey and her friend Kevin of Barre, Deborah Wease and her husband, Mike, of Glover, and daughter-in-law Lisa Darling of Glover; by the following grandchildren: Amy English of Glover, Gerry English II of Glover, Jason and Ryan Larocque of Lyndonville, Bill Stevens of Glover, Chris Provencher of Virginia, Tina Provencher of North Carolina, Jon Provencher of North Troy, Jessica Massey of Barre, Amanda Darling of Glover, Justin Darling of Glover, and Abigail Darling of Glover; by the following great-grandchildren: Emma and Lily English of Glover, Adrienne and Autumn Larocque of Lyndonville, Bryer and Annika Provencher of North Troy, Lily and Violet Provencher of Virginia, and Brysian and Michael Provencher of North Carolina; by Tara, her cat, who was her constant companion. She was predeceased by her sister Marie Gardner, and her son Randy Darling on August 15, 2007.
Friends may call at the Curtis-Britch-Converse-Rushford Funeral Home at 12 Elm Street in Barton on Thursday, September 16, from 5 to 7 p.m. for a celebration of her life. Friends will gather afterwards at the family farm on Dexter Mountain Road. Interment will take place at a later date at the convenience of the family.

John Garfield

John W. Garfield Sr., 59, also known as Chief Working Beaver, died on September 4, 2010, at his home in Island Pond surrounded by his loving family.
He was born June 25, 1951, in Keene, New Hampshire.
He entered the U.S. Army where he was stationed in Korea during the Vietnam War. Mr. Garfield was a supervisor for Site Tech, Inc, Heavy Equipment Operations in Prospect, Connecticut. He was an active member and chief of the Clan of Bear and a past member of the Veterans of Foreign Wars. He enjoyed carving and woodworking in Native American arts, and he was a wonderful husband, father and friend.
He is survived by his wife, Lorna Garfield, of Island Pond; his four children: SFC John W. Garfield Jr. and his wife, Michela, of Kentucky, Billie-Jo Picard and her husband, Alan, of Island Pond, Sherrie-Shantel Testa and her husband, Nick, of Connecticut, and Mikey Garfield of Island Pond; by six grandchildren: Scott, Savanna, Lars, Cheyenne, Robert, and Kayla.
Funeral services were held on September 10, at the Curtis-Britch-Converse-Rushford Funeral Home in Island Pond with Sister Rainbow officiating. Immediately following the service, military honors wiere held.

Lawrence F. Kipp

Lawrence "Larry" Kipp, 54, of Newport, a longtime insurance agent and agency principal, died on Friday, September 10, 2010, at Dartmouth Hitchcock Medical Center in Lebanon, New Hampshire, surrounded by his son Justin, two of his best friends, and his beloved girlfriend, Sarah.
He was born November 18, 1955, a son of Richard F. and Florence (Hawkins) Kipp.
He was raised in Orleans and was a 1973 graduate of Lake Region Union High School. He received a business degree from Champlain College and joined the family insurance agency, which was started in 1928 by his grandfather Archie Kipp. He later was a co-owner with his brother Steve until the sale of the agency in 2002. In 1998, he received an award as an outstanding agent from the state Insurance Agents Association.
Mr. Kipp loved sports. He played basketball at Lake Region and had been a coach for the girls junior varsity basketball and soccer teams and his son's Junior Hoop basketball team for three years. He also was instrumental in starting the Orleans area youth soccer league. He enjoyed fishing, especially ice and lake fishing at Willoughby Lake, hunting and golfing. He was an avid Yankees fan. He enjoyed sugarmaking and vegetable and flower gardening. Mr. Kipp was known as a very grateful person, expressing sincere gratitude to all who had done anything for him.
He served Barton for a time as a school board member and also had been an emergency medical technician on the Barton Rescue Squad, as well as a previous officer.
He was a dedicated, loving and giving father and was greatly saddened by the death of his daughter Brooke in her seventeenth year.
Mr. Kipp leaves his mother, Florence "Sally" Kipp, of the Greensboro Nursing Home; his son Justin Kipp of Hanover; a brother Steven Kipp of Daytona Beach, Florida, and Irasburg; a sister Martha Lanham and her husband, Paul, of Enola, Pennsylvania; his girlfriend, Sarah Carpenter, of Newport; a niece Greta Kipp of Irasburg; three nephews: John Kipp of Orleans, Trevor Lanham of Monterey, California, and Kipp Lanham of Washington, D.C.; an aunt Betty Thurber of Middlebury; as well as extended family and friends.
He was predeceased by his father, Richard Kipp, on March 2, 1988; and his beloved daughter, Brooke, on March 2, 1998.
A memorial service will be held, at 11 a.m. on Saturday, September 18, at the Pleasant View cemetery in Orleans with Pastor David Lisner officiating.
In lieu of flowers, contributions may be made to the Brooke Kipp Memorial Scholarship, care of Tim Chamberlin at Lake Region Union High School, 317 Lake Region Road, Orleans, Vermont 05860.

Madalene Mary Teague Lemnah

Madalene Mary Teague Lemnah, 86, of St. Albans, formerly of Newport, died on September 7, 2010, in Burlington after a short illness. She was able to remain until her son Mark returned from Afghanistan.
She was born May 6, 1924, in Fairfield, a daughter of Benjamin and Iva Pearl (Boomhower) Teague.
She graduated in 1942 from Cathedral High School. Prior to her marriage, she was employed by Bell Telephone. She married Carlton F. Lemnah of Fairfield on October 5, 1950. She and her late husband moved to Newport in 1959, and she became very active within the community. She was a longtime 4-H leader and taught sewing to many young 4-H youngsters. Many a local member will have fond memories of the lessons they learned.
She is survived by her children: Thomas Lemnah of St. Albans, Mark Lemnah and his wife, Francine, of Westford, Carla Lemnah-Warner and her husband, James, of Westfield, Massachusetts, Judith Hayes and her husband, C. Steven, of Fairfax; by her grandson Derrick Lemnah and his son Stewart John Lemnah, along with Derrick’s partner, Melanie Bouchard, and her daughters Abbie and Madison; by granddaughter Renee Welchman and her husband, Kyle, and their daughter Emma; by granddaughter Katie Warner and her friend Eric McCutcheon of Westfield, Massachusetts, and Emily Warner of South Woodbury and her friend Ben Roy; by her granddaughers Mattie and Morgan Hayes of Fairfax and Jeffersonville; by her grandson Dustin Hayes of Fairfax; by her sisters: Elizabeth Hatch of Belfast, Maine, and Ann Hale of East Hartford, Connecticut; by close sisters-in-law Polly Cosgrove, Rosalie Teague, Marion Reynolds, and Ruth Lemnah; by her brother- and sister-in-law Harold and Marlene Lemnah; and by many nieces and nephews. She was predeceased by her daughter Nancy Lemnah; sister and brother-in-law Robert and Helen Teague; and by two brothers Raymond Teague and Thomas Cosgrove.
Mrs. Lemnah will be sorely missed by her close friends and Gricebrook Community members, and everyone at the St. Albans Senior Center, and especially by her card circle. She was known for her generosity and kindness, but most especially for her love.
Funeral services were held on September 13 at St. Patrick’s Catholic Church in Fairfield with the Reverend Leonidas Laroche celebrating a Mass. Interment followed in St. Patrick’s cemetery, Fairfield.

Melba Barber-Howland

On September 10, 2010, Melba Barber-Howland, 77, of Barton died on September 10, 2010.
Calling hours will be on Friday, September 17, at the Barton United Church from 12 to 1:30 p.m. with burial at the West Glover cemetery at 2 p.m. A celebration of her life will follow at the Barton United Church.
In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to the Trace Santos-Barber Scholarship, Morristown School District, P.O. Box 340, Morrisville, Vermont 05661.

Aline V. Custeau

Aline V. Custeau, 70, of Essex Center died peacefully on Wednesday evening, July 14, 2010, at the Burlington Health and Rehabilitaion Center in Burlington.
Mrs. Custeau was born January 9, 1940, in Barton, a daughter of the late Amri and Beatrice (Martel) Vezina.
She graduated from Barton Academy and Graded School on August 2, 1958.
She married James Joseph Custeau in St. Paul’s Catholic Church in Barton. She was a nurse’s assistant for a short while at the Green Mountain Nursing Home in Colchester.
Mrs. Custeau enjoyed reading, listening to music, and spending time with her sisters. She was a resident of Essex Center for 45 years and most recently had moved to the Burlington Health and Rehabilitaion Center. She was a caring homemaker who provided loving care for her in-laws for many years and later for her husband, Jim, in his last years of life. She was especially proud of her family. She deeply loved her husband, her children, and her grandchildren. Her family was blessed in having such a good mother and grandmother. She will be deeply missed by her family and friends.
Mrs. Custeau is survived by her sons: Charles Custeau and his wife, Ruth, of Milton and Thomas Custeau and his wife, Pam, of St. Albans; by her daughter Michelle Duke and her husband, Richard, of Mebane, North Carolina; by her grandchildren: Elizabeth, Heather, Kyle, Kevin, Conor, and Jessica; her sisters: Jeannine Berard and her husband, Gilles, of Barton, Alice Cooke and her husband, Robert, of Milton, and Suzanne Kwiatkowski and her husband, Tim, of Barre; her brother Henry Vezina and his wife, Priscilla, of Barton; and by numerous nieces and nephews. She was predeceased by her husband on August 13, 1999.
A Mass was celebrated on July 19, 2010, at Holy Angels Catholic Church in St. Albans with Father Maurice Roy as celebrant. Burial followed in the Riverside cemetery in Lincoln, New Hampshire.
Memorial contributions may be made to the Humane Society of Chittenden County, 142 Kindness Court, South Burlington, Vermont 05403.

Germaine Marie Brault

Germaine Marie Brault, 80, of Newport died on July 25, 2010.
She was born on August 9, 1929, in St. Jean de Matha, Quebec, a daughter of Leopold and Edouilda (St. Georges) Bonin.
Mrs. Brault and her family immigrated to Troy in 1946. In 1949 she married Marc-Aurele Brault, also of St. Jean de Matha. They moved to Connecticut shortly after to find work and raise their family.
Mrs. Brault worked as a seamstress out of her home for several years and later worked in a number of factories. Later in life, she worked as a live-in nanny in East Hartford, Connecticut, taking care of two children. In 1986, she moved back to Newport and worked as a live-in caretaker for a few years.
She enjoyed music, doing word search puzzles, and watching Animal Planet. She loved looking at books of animals.
She is survived by three daughters: Madeline Quirion and her husband, Norman, of Newport Center, Fran Sicotte and her husband, Reynold, of Newport, and Irene Daigle of Georgia; by seven grandchildren: Christine Quirion and her husband, Christopher Rosol, of Cambridge, Massachusetts, Karen Lane and her husband, Jonathan, of New Britain, Connecticut, Matthew Sicotte and his wife, Margaret, of Georgia, Corey Sicotte and his wife, Jessica, of Derby, Stephanie Sicotte and her fiancé, Daniel Higgins, of Newport, Emily Daigle and Erin Daigle, both from Georgia; by two great-grandchildren: Aubrey Sicotte of Derby and Claire Sicotte of Georgia; by sister-in-law Marielle Bonin of Orleans; and by nieces and nephews in Vermont, Connecticut, and Quebec. She was predeceased by her husband, Marc-Aurele, in 1981; her brother Germaine Bonin of Orleans; her sister Yvette Lavarierre of East Hartford; and by her son-in-law Paul Daigle of Georgia.
Friends may call from 6 to 8 p.m. on Wednesday, July 28, at the Curtis-Britch-Converse-Rushford Funeral Home at 4670 Darling Hill Road in Newport. Funeral services will be held at 11 a.m. on Thursday, July 29, at St. Mary’s Star of the Sea Catholic Church in Newport where a Mass will be celebrated. Interment will follow in St. Mary’s cemetery in Newport.
Mrs. Brault was an animal lover. Therefore, should friends desire, contributions can be made to the Frontier Animal Society, 502 Strawberry Acres Road, Newport, Vermont 05855.

Mildred F. Heath Coe

Mildred F. Heath Coe, 95, of Island Pond died on July 22, 2010, in Barton.
She was born April 23, 1915, in Newport Town, a daughter of John and Almeda (Parsons) Aldrich.
During her lifetime she was employed by Ethan Allen Manufacturing. She and her first husband, Sherman Heath, farmed for many years before she went out to work. She married Alvin Coe five years after her first husband died. Mr. Coe predeceased her in 1985.
She enjoyed knitting, sewing, crocheting, and doing crossword puzzles. She was very family oriented and delighted in her grandchildren and great-grandchildren.
She is survived by two sons: William Heath and his wife, Gleigh, of Island Pond, and Milton Heath and his wife, Fay, of Newport; by her grandchildren: Shirley Mooney and her husband, Steve, William Heath Jr. and his wife, Donna, Lorrie Heath, Peggy Reed and her husband, Earl, Robert Heath and his wife, Janet, Diana Beryle and her husband, Peter, Beverly Heath, John Heath, Stephen Heath and his wife, Tracy, Aaron Heath, Ann Marie Heath, Leslie Heath and his wife, Cindy, Joanne Young and her husband, Steve; and by 14 great-grandchildren. She was predeceased by a son Sherman, a grandson Ricky, and by two brothers and two sisters.
Funeral services were held on July 20 at the Curtis-Britch-Converse-Rushford Funeral Home, in Island Pond with the Reverend Richard Whitehill officiating. Interment followed in Lakeside cemetery in Island Pond.
Should friends desire, contributions in her memory may be made to the Activities Fund at Maple Lane Nursing Home, 60 Maple Lane, Barton, Vermont 05822.

Rudolph A. Mossa

Rudolph A. Mossa, 86, of Barton died on July 25, 2010, in Glover.
He was born May 6, 1924, in Newport, a son of Augustus and Grace (Bishop) Mossa.
On May 17, 1947, he married Leah Turcotte who predeceased him on December 31, 2005.
He entered the U.S. Navy and served his country during World War II. At one time, Mr. Mossa worked for the Canadian Pacific Railroad as a freight agent. He opened his own television sales and service business in 1955, which he operated for several years. He also repaired electric fencers, which were sent to him from all over the U.S.
He and his wife played golf for many years, and he was past president of the Orleans Country Club. He held membership with the Barton American Legion Post #76 and the Barton Bishop Ryan Council #2933. Mr. Mossa enjoyed gardening and took great pride in having his property looking topnotch.
He is survived by his daughter Rose Harper and her husband, Woodie, of Barton; by his grandchildren: Sean Harper and his fiancé, Stephanie Piette, of St. Albans, and Alexis Harper of Barton; by his sister-in-law Jeanne Perry of North Carolina; and by several nieces and nephews. He was predeceased by two half-brothers: George and Kenneth Percy.
A graveside service will be held at 2 p.m. on Wednesday, July 28, at the Pine Grove cemetery in Newport with military honors.

John T. Driscoll

John T. Driscoll, 86, of Island Pond, formerly of New York, died on August 15, 2010, at his home in Island Pond.
He was born August 16, 1923, in Bronx, New York, a son of Walter and Martha (Lane) Driscoll.
He graduated from Christopher Columbus High School in New York City.
On May 1, 1948, he married Patricia Farrell who survives him. He was a traffic controller for Lone Star Industries in Maritime Nyack, New York. He entered the U.S. Coast Guard where he served his country during World War II. He was a member of the American Legion Post #214 of Warwick, New York.
He enjoyed woodworking, playing golf, and working in his flower garden.
He is survived by his wife, Patricia Driscoll, of Island Pond; by the following children: Thomas Driscoll and his wife, Stephanie, of Cherry Valley, New York, Walter Driscoll and his wife, Marcia, of Island Pond, Kathleen Garulli and her husband, Mike, of Goshen, New York, Brian Driscoll and his wife, Jeannette, of Little Rock, Arkansas, Daniel Driscoll and his friend Michelle of Shohola, Pennsylvania, Donna Egan and her husband, John, of Shohola, Terence Driscoll of Island Pond, and John Driscoll Jr. and his wife, Liz, of Denver, Colorado; by 13 grandchildren, two step-grandchildren; two great-grandchildren; and by several nieces and nephews. He was predeceased by three brothers and four sisters.
Services will be held in New York at the convenience of the family.
