Leopaul “Paul” C. Nadeau
Leopaul “Paul” C. Nadeau, 72, of Essex died surrounded by his loving family and went home to be with the Lord on Friday, December 11, 2009, at Fletcher Allen Health Care in Burlington.
Mr. Nadeau was born in Orleans on December 28, 1936, a son of Emmanuel and Celinde (Roberts) Nadeau.
On September 2, 1961, he married
the love of his life, Beverly Niles, in Orleans.
He was a longtime member of St. Thomas Catholic Church in Underhill Center and spent many hours volunteering his gift of craftsmanship. He was a partner with his father and brothers in Nadeau Brothers Construction Company in Essex and the Nadeau Lumber Store in Jericho. His most recent accomplishment was being general contractor for his daughter Lorrie and her husband, Phil, in the relocation and construction of Frontline Fire and Rescue of Essex Center. He spent many hours there greeting and working with customers.
Anyone who ever met or knew him knows how much he loved life. He always had a smile on his face and a deep compassion for people. He was a great role model as a husband, father, and grandfather.
He would always say, “My family is my life, and they mean the world to me!”
His tremendous faith in God helped him endure the pain he suffered throughout his life.
In addition to his wife of more than 48 years, Beverly, he leaves behind his children: Lorrie Noyes and her husband, Phil, of Essex Center, Debbie Bartlett and her husband, Shawn, of Underhill, Tracie Breton and her husband, Robert, of Underhill, and David Adams and his wife, Sherrie, of Underhill; his grandchildren: Travis, Nicholas, and Hailee Bartlett, Cory and Jenna Noyes, Brianna Waters, Devin and Austin Breton, and Jessica, Kaitlyn and Meghan Adams; his siblings: Armand Nadeau and his wife, Theresa, of Florida, Roger Nadeau and his wife, Diana, of Underhill, Cecile Auger of Essex, and Alice Locke of Irasburg; many nieces and nephews; and two special friends, Bill and Betty Darrah of Essex. He was predeceased by his parents, Emmanuel and Celinde Nadeau; and by his brothers Maurice and Raymond Nadeau.
A Mass of Christian Burial was celebrated December 18 at St. Thomas Catholic Church. Burial was in St. Thomas cemetery.
In lieu of flowers, the family has requested donations be made in Mr. Nadeau’s memory to the American Arthritis Foundation, P.O. Box 96280, Washington, D.C., 20077-7491; or to Feed the Children, P.O. Box 8, Oklahoma City, Oklahoma 73101-0008.
Catherine J. Shepard
Catherine J. Shepard, 46, of Holland died suddenly on December 13, 2009, at her home.
Mrs. Shepard was born August 29, 1963, in Newport, a daughter of David and Bonita (Cumby) Rice.
On December 29, 1995, she married
Stuart Shepard, who survives her.
She loved to cook, crochet, and make arts and crafts, much to the delight of family and friends who received items as gifts. She loved family get-togethers and her animals, especially her cats.
Besides her parents, she is survived by her husband, Stuart Shepard, of Holland; by her children Liza Delong of New York and Miranda Shepard of Holland; by her grandchildren: Dawson, Laney, and Dillon Stebbens of Irasburg; and by her siblings: David Rice Jr. and his friend, Jean Bombard, Donald Rice and his companion, Cathy Rever, of Derby, Christopher Rice and his partner, Travis Randall, of West Burke, Lori Puckett of South Carolina, and Debbie Crowe and her companion, Steven, of Barre; by special friends: Randy, Lorraine, and Kyle Griffin, Yvon Quirion, and David Phaneuf; and by several aunts, uncles, nieces, and nephews. She was predeceased by her son Ryan Berry in 2003.
A memorial service will be held at 1 p.m. on Wednesday, December 30, at the Curtis-Britch Converse-Rushford Funeral Home on Darling Hill Road in Newport with the Reverend Richard Whitehill officiating. Friends may call from noon on Wednesday at the funeral home.

Glenys Lilian Tukis
Glenys Lilian Tukis, 65, of Newport Center died December 16, 2009, at her home.
Mrs. Tukis was born September 30, 1944, in Durham, England, a daughter of Charles and Sarah (Hogg) Scott.
On July 3, 1965, she married
Wallace Tukis, who survives her.
She was a past member of the Royal Order of Moose.
She enjoyed doing puzzles and tending to her flower gardens.
She and her husband moved to Vermont in 1989 from Connecticut and to Newport Center in 1992.
In her younger years she liked to ride her horse, be with horses in general, and raise her dogs.
She is survived by her husband, Wallace Tukis, of Newport Center; by children Wallace Tukis Jr. and his wife, Kristy, of Oregon and Charles Tukis and his wife, Tabatha, of Newport Center; and by grandchildren: Alex, Ethan, Isah, Roddi, Randy, and Andrea, all of Oregon, and Kristina Tukis of Newport Center.
Services will be held at the convenience of the family.

Virginia Mary Altenhoff
Virginia Mary Altenhoff, 82, of Barton died March 10, 2010, in Newport.
She was born April 21, 1927, in Braddock, Pennsylvania, a daughter of Bruno and Mary (Mankowski) Kwiatkowski.
On July 20, 1973, she married
George Altenhoff who predeceased her on June 15, 2002.
Mrs. Altenhoff was a clerk for the former Ben Franklin Store in Barton. She enjoyed having coffee at the Barton Pharmacy with the coffee group. She was a member of St. Paul’s Catholic Church in Barton.
She is survived by two children: Leonard Rock and his wife, Carol, of Barton; and Judy Hoyt and her husband, Rick, of Orleans; her step children: George Altenhoff Jr. and his wife, Barb, of St. Petersburg, Florida; and Rich Altenhoff of Crystal Lake, Florida; by her son-in-law, Joseph LaCoco Sr. of Huntly, Illinois. She is also survived by a sister, Helen Jackson, and her husband, Bonnie, of Boca Raton, Florida; and by numerous grandchildren, great-grandchildren, nieces and nephews.
She was predeceased by her daughter, Debra Rock; her step-daughter, Dianna LaCoco; by a sister, Jessie May; and by three brothers, Walter, Eddie and Joseph Kwiatkowski.
Funeral services will be held on June 3 at St. Paul’s Catholic Church in Barton with the Reverend Sixmund Nyabenda celebrating a mass of Christian burial.
Should friends desire, contributions in her memory may be made to the North Country Hospital Ronald Holland Renal Dialysis Center, 189 Prouty Drive, Newport, Vermont 05855. Interment will follow in Welcome O. Brown cemetery, Barton.

Robert J. Gordon
Robert J. Gordon, 54, of Albany died at the Vermont Respite House in Williston on March 9, 2010, following a courageous battle with cancer.
He was born in Nyack, New York, the son of Frank and Theresa (Dombrowski) Gordon.
He attended Rockland Community College in Suffern, New York, where he studied art.
In 1991 he married
Lynn Roberts in Rock Tavern, New York. They moved to Albany in 1995.
Mr. Gordon worked for Parkview Garage in Barton as an auto mechanic.
His favorite thing was to spend time with his wife, son and dogs. He enjoyed working on projects with his son and was a lover of good food and automobiles. He was a hard worker, everyone's friend, and always willing to lend a hand.
He leaves his wife, Lynn, of Albany; two sons, Travis Gordon of Albany and George Venevia of New York; two brothers, Rony Gordon and Stephen Gordon, both of New York; three sisters, Priscilla Gordon, Pauline Gordon and Ellie Gordon, all of New York.
There will be no services. Contributions in his memory may be made to the Community National Bank in Morrisville where a fund is being set up for his son Travis; or to the Frontier Animal Society, 4473 Barton-Orleans Road, Orleans, Vermont 05860.

William Lee Hackett
William Lee Hackett, 86, of Derby, died March 10, 2010, at his home.
He was born January 8, 1924, in Holland, a son of Lee and Carrie (Tree) Hackett.
On June 22, 1946, he married
Jane E. Letourneau, who survives him.
Mr. Hackett always worked locally. He worked for Geach Electric selling and servicing appliances until he founded his own TV and appliance store. After he sold his share of that business, he worked for Montgomery Ward and Newport Cable. He later worked for Seguin Music as a television technician.
He enjoyed traveling, liked visiting historic places, and spent many years working on the family tree.
He is survived by his wife, Jane Hackett, of Derby; his children: Linda Gibson and her husband, Thomas, of Isle LaMotte; David Hackett and his wife, Lise (Limoge), of Phoenixville, Pennsylvania; and Mary Anne Gratton and her husband, Daniel, of Essex Junction. He also leaves seven grandchildren: William Hackett and his wife, Tanya, of Bennington; Craig Hackett of Pownal; Jason Gibson of Isle LaMotte; Alex and Timothy Hackett of Phoenixville, Pennsylvania; Andrea and Allie Gratton of Essex Junction; and by two great-grandchildren: Crystal and Mayka Hackett of Bennington. He is also survived by a sister, Doris Haldorsen, and her husband, Hal, of Las Vegas, Nevada; and by his daughter-in-law, Irene Hackett, of Bennington.
He was predeceased by his son Richard Lee Hackett; a sister, Evelyn Simmons; and by a brother, Warren Hackett.
Funeral services were held March 15 at Curtis-Britch-Converse-Rushford Memorial Chapel in Newport with Pastor Christine Moseley officiating.
Spring interment will be held on May 28 at the Mead Hill cemetery in Holland.

Sylvia Cullum Hunt
Sylvia Cullum Hunt, 93, of Derby, formerly of West Hartford, Connecticut, died March 6, 2010, at home in Newport.
She was born September 7, 1916, in London, England, a daughter of William Cullum and Margaret (Muir) Enterkin.
On December 5, 1942, she married
Edward Earle Hunt, who survives her.
Mrs. Hunt was an accomplished pianist, organist, and painter. She was active in the West Hartford Art League, and she was an author of the book, Caught In The Middle, A Portrait of Two Worlds.
She and her husband moved to Derby in 2006 to live with their son.
She is survived by her husband, Edward Hunt, of Derby; her son, Warren Hunt, and his wife, Helene Giroux, of Derby; her daughter, Deborah Hunt-Tolly, and her husband, James, of Austin, Texas; five grandchildren; and five great-grandchildren.
Services will be held at the convenience of the family. Interment will be at Fairview cemetery, in West Hartford, Connecticut. Arrangements are by Curtis-Britch-Converse-Rushford Funeral Homes.
Herbert J. Washer
Herbert J. Washer, 79, of Berlin died March 12, 2010, at the Berlin Health and Rehabilitation Center. His family was at his bedside.
He was born April 26, 1930, in St. Johnsbury, the son of Oscar and Ruth (Wheeler) Washer.
He graduated from Orleans High School in 1948 and received his bachelor of arts degree from Norwich University in Northfield in 1952.
He had been married
to Cynthia Emerson, and they made their home in Barton. They later divorced. Since 1978, he made his home in Montpelier and more recently in Berlin.
For over 38 years, he worked for the Vermont Highway Department and then the Vermont Agency of Transportation. He was a civil engineer in the construction division. He also worked as a consultant to the agency. He retired in 1992.
His memberships included the Brown-Johnson VFW Post 792 Men’s Auxiliary and the Elks Lodge 924, both of Montpelier. He was also a Scottish Rite Mason, belonging to Orleans Masonic Lodge 55 of Barton, where he was a Past Master, and the Mount Sinai Shrine Temple 3 of Montpelier.
He enjoyed antique cars, following the New York Giants football team, and the New York Yankees baseball team, and traveling to Florida. Trips to New York to watch his favorite teams were special times.
Survivors include his son Johnny Washer of Barton; his two daughters, Tanya Bradley and her husband, David, of Barton and Anne Plourde and her husband, Raymond, of Amherst, New Hampshire; and two grandchildren, Thomas Bradley and Tara Bradley.
Besides his parents, he was predeceased by his son Terry Lee Washer; his sister Marie Washer; and his brother Newton Washer who was shot down over Italy during WWII.
Funeral services were held on March 16 at the Hooker and Whitcomb Funeral Home in Barre. Interment will take place at a later date in the Irasburg cemetery.
