Vera W. Smith

ST. JOHNSBURY — Vera Washburn Smith, 54, died Monday, Feb. 26, 2001 at Northeastern Vermont Regional Hospital in St. Johnsbury after a long illness.

She was born on October 15, 1946 in Randolph the daughter of Chester and Lena (Vaughn Raymond) Washburn. She was educated in Braintree and Randolph.

For the last 11 years she had been employed at Dartmouth College as a janitor, a job she truly loved. In addition, she assisted her husband, Linwood, in operating an archery Pro-Shop from their home in St. Johnsbury.

Her favorite activities were reading, crosswords, the outdoors, and family gatherings. She was a member of the Green Mountain Grange #1 and a 4-H leader.

She was predeceased by her parents.

She is survived by her husband: Linwood Smith of St. Johnsbury, whom she married Sept. 3, 1966; two daughters: Debbie Wunder and her husband John of St. Johnsbury, and Carol Roy and her husband Bruce Jr. of Lyndonville; two grandsons; Justin and Randy Roy of Lyndonville; her sister; Thelma Murray; her mother-in-law; Harriett W. Smith of Passumspic; her brothers-in-laws: Duane Smith, his wife Evelyn, and their children, Danny and Jessie, of Lyndonville; and Larry Smith, his wife Lisa, and their children, Jennifer and Josh, of St. Johnsbury; her cousins, and many friends.

Visiting hours will be held at the New Beginning Christian Church, 72 Town House Terrace, St. Johnsbury, from 6-9 p.m. Thursday evening.

Memorial services will be held at the Union Baptist Church on Route #5, St. Johnsbury, Friday, March 2, at 2 p.m., with Pastor Richard Menard and Rev. Glenn Hatch officiating.

In lieu of flowers, contributions in her memory may be made to the New Beginning Christian Church Marilyn Berube, 72 Town House Road, St. Johnsbury, Vt. 05819 or the Green Mountain Grange #1, c/o Elizabeth Dresser, 9863 Green Lantern Trailer Park, St. Johnsbury Center, Vt. 05819 or to 4-H Shooting Program, c/o Kristin Cross, 9 Dean Street, Springfield, Vt. 05156.

Woods-Trefren & Pearsons Funeral Home, 70 Church Street, Lyndonville is in charge of the arrangements.

Richard B. Wattson

RANDOLPH CENTER — Richard B. "Doc" Wattson, 64, died Friday in Lebanon, N.Y. He was born August 7, 1936 in Hackensack, N.H., a son of Harry B. and Carolyn L. (Ott) Wattson.

He graduated from high school in Rutherford, N.J. and then from Stevens Institute of Technology. After receiving his Doctorate in Physics from Princeton, the moved to Boston to work with Carl Sagan at MIT. He later worked for Visidyne Corp. in Burlington, Mass. as a molecular spectroscopist and most recently for the Stuart Radiance Laboratories in Bedford, Mass. He retired to Randolph Center in August.

He loved hiking, long walks in the forest and listening to music.

He is survived by his mother, a sister, Virginia Rowley, and her husband Gordon, three nieces: Tracey and Megan Rowley, and Kerrie Myre and her husband Derek; two grand nieces; Amber and Lauren, and a grand nephew, Zachari Myre, all of Richmond, Ky., and his good friend of twenty years Alan L. Drew of Randolph Center.

Calling hours were held Feb. 27 at the Knight Funeral Home, 903 Hartford Ave., White River Jct.

Kevin Brent Osgood

ANSON, ME. & RANDOLPH — Kevin Brent Osgood, 41, of Anson, and formerly of Randolph, died suddenly, Friday morning, Feb. 23, 2001 in Skowhegan, Maine.

He was born Oct. 5, 1959 in Randolph, the son of Carleton "Bunk" and B. Irene (Bowen) Osgood. He graduated from Randolph High School and had lived in Maine the past 20 years.

He had worked at the L.L. Bean Shoe Shop in Farmington, Maine, and most recently was a paving contractor. He enjoyed fishing, camping, rock & roll, and country music. He was married to Wanda Libby.

Survivors include his wife, Wanda, of Anson, a son, Justin Osgood of Anson, daughters; Karen Osgood of Anson, and Nicole Campbell of Morrisville, Vt.; parents; Carleton "Bunk" & B. B. Irene Osgood of Randolph; brothers; David Osgood of Randolph, and Craig Osgood of Strafford, N.H.; sisters; Carlene Dean and Donna Elmore of Randolph; two grandchildren; several nieces and nephews and longtime best friend, Howard Boutwell of Randolph.

Funeral services were held Tuesday morning, Feb. 27, at the Day Funeral Home in Randolph, with Rev. Ronald Rilling, officiating. A poem entitled "Someone Loves You" written by Kevin’s niece, April Dean, was read by Rev. Rilling. Bob Segar’s "Old Time Rock and Roll" was played to conclude the service. Calling hours were Monday evening at the funeral home.

Burial will be in the spring at the Pleasant View cemetery in Randolph. Contributions in his memory may be made to the Justin Morgan Christian School, Hebard Hill Road, Randolph, Vt. 05060.

Edith C. Pray

ROYALTON — Edith C. Pray, 87, died Saturday afternoon at the Brookside Nursing Home in Bradford. She was born March 15, 1913, in Northfield, the daughter of Jesse Otis and Lila Mabel (Thyer) Chaffee.

She attended school in Northfield, and married Robert N. Pray, Sept. 16, 1931 in South Royalton. Edith worked as a weaver at the woolen mills in Enfield, N.H. and North Montpelier, and for several years at Dewey’s Mills in Quechee. She later worked at Granite Glove Corporation in South Royalton and G.W. Plastics in Bethel. Edith also worked for short periods of time keeping house for several law students in Royalton, at the Calvin Coolidge Tourist Center in Plymouth, and with the Randolph Headstart Program, as well as providing care for many elderly individuals throughout the Central Vermont area as a senior companion. She had been at the Brookside Nursing Home in Bradford for the past two years.

She was a former member of the First Congregational Church of Royalton. She also attended services at the South Royalton Congregational Church as well as the Baptist Church in Randolph. She was a church volunteer and helped with the SHARE program in Sharon. She will be mostly remembered for her family gatherings, which she treasured.

She is survived by a son, Donald R. Pray of South Royalton, a daughter, Dorothy L. Carr of Tunbridge, a grandson, whom she raised, Ray Pray of Bethel; 11 grandchildren, 16 great grandchildren, and several nieces and nephews.

She was predeceased by her husband who died March 6, 1975, a son, Clifford B. Pray, who died Nov. 19, 1986; a granddaughter, Dawn Marie; a grandson, Edwin Ives; a brother, Ray Chaffee; and a sister, Violet Davis.

Calling hours were held at the Boardway & Cilley Funeral Home in Chelsea, Tuesday evening. Funeral services were held Wednesday, Feb. 28 at the funeral home, with the Rev. Jerry Smith, pastor of the Randolph Baptist Church, officiating. Burial will be held in the spring in the Riverview cemetery in South Royalton.

Memorial contributions may be sent to the charity of one’s choice.

Marion B. Titus

WEST CHESTERFIELD, N.H. — Marion B. Titus, 77, of Stage Road in West Chesterfield, died unexpectedly Tuesday afternoon, Dec. 26, 2000 at Brattleboro Memorial Hospital.

She was born in South Royalton Jan. 26, 1923, the daughter of Lawrence and Olive (Wheeler) Burke.

She was raised and educated in South Royalton and was a graduate of South Royalton High School, Class of 1940.

She was employed at the Town Crier in Brattleboro for the past 22 years as a proofreader. Previously she served as church secretary at Centre Congregational Church and had worked at the American Optical Corp. in Brattleboro.

She especially enjoyed knitting, quilting, and reading. She loved the seacoast and spent time vacationing in Maine. She was also known as an excellent cook; and operated a baked goods business for a number of years.

On June 22, 1946, in South Royalton, she was married to Elwin P. Titus, who survives.

Besides her husband of 54 years, she leaves three sons: Brian Titus of Stratham, N.H.; Jeffrey Titus of West Chesterfield, and Neal Titus of Hinsdale; two sisters; Beatrice Lovejoy and Eunice Morris, both of South Royalton; five grandchildren and many nieces and nephews.

Funeral services were conducted Friday, Dec. 29 at the Atamaniuk Funeral Home, 40 Terrace Street, Brattleboro. Burial and committal service will take place in the springtime.

Memorial contributions in Mrs. Titus’s name may be made to; The Monadnock Humane Society, P.O. Box 678, West Swanzey, N.H. 03469.

Arrangements were under the direction of the Atamaniuk Funeral Home.

Josephine Stephens

BRADFORD — Josephine M. Stephens, 78, of Wilmington, Mass. and formerly a longtime resident of Bradford, Vt. died Friday, Dec. 22, 2000 at The Sunbridge Nursing Home in Wilmington.

She was born Oct. 11, 1922 in Bradford, the daughter of Andrew and Mary (Bowen) Emerson. She was educated in Bradford schools and was a 1940 graduate of Bradford Academy. She then attended Temple University.

She was last employed by the Fairlee Motel and had been employed for the Vermont State Highway Department for two years and was employed for the United State Government for 19 years in civil service.

On May 3, 1942 in Outon, Maryland she was married to Norton Stephens, who predeceased her in 1972.

She resided in Bradford until moving to Massachusetts ten years ago. She was a member of the Orange East Senior Center.

Survivors include her four daughters; Mary Provost of Shrewsbury, Mass., Gail Welch of Hopkinton, Mass., June Gates of Tewksbury, Mass. and Vera Stephens of Jacksonville, Fla.; eight grandchildren; seven great-grandchildren and one great-great grandchild; one sister; Francis Thurston of Sheffield, two brothers; Wesley Emerson of South Royalton, and William Emerson of Brookfield, Mass., and several nieces and nephews. She was predeceased by four sisters; Edith Brown, Elizabeth Penn, Bertha Emerson and Susie Maynard and five brothers; Andrew, Frank, John, Clifford and Hollis Emerson.

Graveside funeral services will be held in the spring in Sawyer cemetery Bradford, Vt. There were no calling hours.

Donations in Mrs. Stephens’ memory may be made to the American Diabetes Association. Arrangements are under the direction of the Hale Funeral Home, Upper Plain, Bradford, Vt.
