Marjory E. (Russell) Ames

CUSHING, ME. — Marjory Edith Ames, 76, died Sept. 8, 2000, at Penobscot Bay Medical Center, Rockport, Me. born Aug. 1, 1924, in Royalton, she was the daughter of Homer and Dorothy (Young) Russell.

She attended both grade school and high school in Royalton, as well as two years of college in Vermont. She came to Friendship, with her parents, in 1949 and worked 23 years at GTE Sylvania, in Waldoboro. She retired as a Quality Control Inspector.

Marjory married Oakley Ames in 1975, moving to his home in Cushing, and the couple celebrated their 25th wedding anniversary this past July. She and Oakley enjoyed sailing and several times left their shore to sail the eastern seaboard, ending up in either Canada or Florida.

Besides her husband of Cushing, she is survived by her brother, Everett H. Russell of Friendship. She also leaves her children, Anna Gay Sellars of Owl’s Head, Me., O. David Ames of Warren, Me. Ramona F. Kerner and Dennis W. Ames both of St. Augustine, Fla., Mark L. Ames of Cushing and Kosovo, Yugoslavia; Shirley Beaudry of Port St. Lucia, Fla., Diane Gyorgy of St. Leonard, Md., and Kathleen Meservey of Hope, Me; 21 grandchildren and six great-grandchildren. She requested that her two closest friends, Sandra Whitehill of Waldoboro and Edna Simmons of Friendship be added to this family of survivors.

A graveside service will be held, Thursday, Sept. 14 at the Pleasant View cemetery, Davis Point Road, Cushing, with Rev. Dan Ames officiating. Arrangements are under the care of the Strong Funeral Home, 612 Upper Main Street, Damariscotta.

Marion B. Lewis

BETHEL — Marion B. Lewis, 84, died Friday, Jan. 12, at her home in Bethel. She was born November 2, 1916 in South Royalton, the daughter of Wilbur and Hattie (Richards) Woodard.

She attended school in South Royalton and graduated from South Royalton High School in 1934. She married Hugh Russell in South Royalton. Later, she was married to Robert C. Lewis of Strafford in 1942 and they lived on their farm on Dairy Hill in South Royalton.

She worked for several years at Van Raalte in Randolph, in the 1950’s. Mr. Lewis died October 26, 1958. She then moved to the village in South Royalton and began her career as a health care provider, doing private home health care for the elderly until her retirement in the 1980’s.

She was a former member of the Baptist Church in Randolph, and the Methodist Church in South Tunbridge. Currently she belonged to the Church of Jesus Christ Latter Day Saints in South Royalton. Marion enjoyed knitting, attending auctions and spending time with her family, especially her grandchildren.

She was predeceased by a daughter, Hazel Russell.

She is survived by a daughter, Shirley Foley of Rutland; three sons; Hugh Russell of Missouri, David W. Lewis of South Royalton, and Donald P. Lewis of Bethel; 11 grandchildren, 20 great grandchildren and several nieces, nephews and cousins.

Funeral services were held Monday, Jan. 15, at the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter Day Saints in South Royalton. Bishop Frank Perron, Jr. conducted the service and Harold Kill gave the invocation. Organist Coreen McGuire led the congregation in singing "How Great Thou Art, " "Rock of Ages" and "Amazing Grace." Reflections were given by Vivian Kill and Bishop Perron. Soloist Laura Crossett sang "Be Still, My Soul." Nancyanne Moulton gave the benediction.

The bearers were grandsons, Jeff Lewis and Jason Lewis. Burial will be held later in spring in the Riverview cemetery in South Royalton. Following the service there was fellowship for family and friends at the Royalton Academy Building in Royalton.

Memorial contributions may be sent to the Visiting Nurse Alliance of Vermont and New Hampshire, Inc., 36 South Main Street, Randolph, Vt. 05060.

Hazel G. Darrah

WHITE RIVER JCT. — Hazel G. Darrah, 83, died Wednesday, Jan. 10 at Brookside Nursing Home in White River Jct., Vt. She was born August 23, 1917 in West Swanzey, N.H.

She graduated from high school in Randolph and married Frank F. Darrah April 28, 1940. They lived in Randolph until moving to White River Jct., in 1952, where they lived the rest of their lives.

She worked at the glove factory in White River Jct. and later in the cafeteria for the Hartford School District. After retiring, she and her husband wintered in Florida for 20 years, until he died in 1993.

She is a former member of the Good Sam Club.

She is survived by a son, Thomas Darrah of White River Jct., a daughter Virginia Erickson of Rutland, and a grandson.

A graveside memorial service will be held at the convenience of the family in the North Hollow cemetery in Rochester.

Knight Funeral Home in White River Jct., Vt. is in charge of arrangements.

In lieu of flowers memorial contributions may be made the American Diabetes Association, 77 Hegeman Ave. Colchester, Vt. 05446-3113.

Emily Kermath

ARDEN, N.C. — Emily Ely Woodward Kermath, 94, a resident of Krescent View Retirement Centre, died Thursday, Jan. 11, 2001.

She was born Sept. 6, 1906, in Rutherford, N.J., to the late Abigail M. Ely and Frederick Howland Woodward. Mrs. Kermath was a graduate of the University of Michigan at Ann Arbor. She was married to the late Eric J. Kermath, who died in 1951.

During her married life she lived in Newton, Mass., and was active in civic affairs, the Federation of Women's Clubs, League of Women Voters, Delegate to the Republican State Convention, and the PTA. After her husband's death, she taught senior English in high schools in Massachusetts, Michigan and finally in Westfield, N.J.

After she retired from teaching, she moved to Pittsfield, Vt., where she lived for 20 years. Always interested in education and reading, she was instrumental in establishing a library in the town and served as a town auditor. In 1992, she moved to Asheville and lived in Crowfields until 1998.

She was preceded in death by a daughter, Anne K. Amerman.

She is survived by three children, Addison H. Kermath of Pacific Palisades, Calif., Helen E. Casey of Sterling Park, Va., and Margaret K. Story of Asheville; 12 grandchildren and 15 great-grandchildren.

Interment will be in Newton, Mass., at a future date.

Memorials may be made to Mountain Area Hospice, P.O. Box 16, Asheville, N.C. 28801.

Elbert E. Fullam

RANDOLPH — Elbert E. Fullam, 89, of Randolph, died Saturday afternoon, Feb. 24, at his home.

He was born Feb. 16, 1912, in Randolph, the son of Walter and Lillian (Farrar) Fullam. He attended West Brookfield School, which is now the site of his deer camp.

He was married to Theresa Rogers on Feb. 6, 1932, in Randolph. He worked for Randolph Coal & Oil, Sargent & Roundy, Fritzel Toys, Rodco, and operated Cities Service Station & Repair in Randolph from 1949-1959. He had also worked for Waterbury Plastics until retiring in 1976.

A 20-year member of Randolph Village Fire Department, he loved playing cards, especially pitch, hunting at his deer camp, and was fond of animals. He had also been a member of the Odd Fellows, and the Randolph Fish & Game Club.

Survivors include his wife of 69 years, Theresa Rogers Fullam of Randolph; son Allen E. Fullam of Randolph; daughter, Linda J. Allard of Enfield, Conn.; brother Ralph Fullam of Wayland, N.Y.; sisters: Muriel Tabor of Randolph Center and Ruth Foster of Freeport, Maine; 12 grandchildren; 22 great-grandchildren; several nieces and nephews.

He was predeceased by his daughter, Dorothy Martin, and seven brothers and sisters.

Calling hours were held Tuesday evening, Feb. 27, at the Day Funeral Home in Randolph. Graveside services will be held at 1 p.m., May 5, at the West Brookfield cemetery, with Rev. Kathy Eddy officiating. Contributions in his memory may be made to the White River Valley Ambulance, RR 1, Box 579, Bethel, Vt. 05032; or to the VNA Hospice Visiting Nurses Alliance, 36 South Main Street, Randolph, Vt. 05060. Arrangements are by the Day Funeral Home in Randolph.

Frances Bradley

MIDDLEBURY — Frances Viola VanDriessche Bradley, 93, passed away at Helen Porter Nursing Home on February 7, 2001 surrounded by her family.

She was born in Chicago, Illinois on April 2, 1907, the daughter of frank and Emily (Hayden) VanDriessche.

She worked as a homemaker, and also at the A&P, the Park Restaurant in Vergennes and as a housekeeper at the Basin Harbor Club. She was a past member of St. Peter’s Church in Vergennes, and Sts. Donation and Rogation Church in Randolph.

She married Arthur E. Bradley Sr., her husband of 57 years, in Chicago on April 26, 1924. He predeceased her on October 29, 1981.

She was a member of St. Anne’s Society, Autumn Years Club, and the Gifford Medical center Auxiliary. She also loved cats and birds. She moved to Vermont in 1926.

She is survived her children: Arthur Bradley, Jr. and his wife, Marie of Weybridge; Frank Bradley of Braintree, Donald Bradley and his wife, Janice of Milton; Robert Bradley and his wife, Jocelyn of Addison, Elizabeth Barrett of Georgia, Beverly Schroeder of Bristol, Mary Bradley of New Milford, Conn., Florence Martel of Franklin, and Bonnie Mainieri of Colchester. She is also survived by a brother, Thomas Maroney of Mt. Prospect, Illinois, a son-in-law, Willis Patenaude of Copake Falls, N.Y.; 48 grandchildren, numerous great-grandchildren and great-great-grandchildren; several nieces, nephews and cousins.

She was predeceased by four children: Marguerite, Rose Marie, Joyce and an infant son; and by three sister, Marie, Betty and Irene; a daughter-in-law, Juliette Bradley, sons-in-law, Bernard Barrett, and William Martel.

A Mass of Christian Burial will be celebrated Saturday, Feb. 17, 2001 at 11 a.m. at St. Mary’s Catholic Church in Middlebury. Interment and committal services will be held in the spring at Mountain view cemetery in Braintree.

Memorial contributions may be made in her memory to the Helen Porter Nursing Home Activity Fund, c/o Amy Curtis, South Street, Middlebury. Vt. 05753, or to the America Cancer Society, 13 Loomis St., Montpelier, Vt. 05602.
