Donna Swinchoski

RANDOLPH CENTER — Donna M. Swinchoski, 35, died unexpectedly Sunday morning, May 1, 2005, in Buffalo, N.Y.

She was born May 31, 1969 in Berlin, the daughter of Donal and Dorothy (Blanchard) White, Sr.

She attended Randolph schools and graduated from Randolph Union High School in 1988. She worked for Aramark Food Service at Vermont Technical College in Randolph Center for several years.

She married Steven Swinchoski October 26, 2002, in Randolph. They lived in Johnson for a short time before moving to Gresham, Ore., this past November. They were in the process of moving back to Vermont.

She enjoyed doing arts and crafts, picking blackberries, cooking, baking and collecting bells. She had been a volunteer for the Salvation Army in Barre and for Adult Basic Education in the Randolph area. She was a member of the Grange.

Survivors include her husband, Steven Swinchoski of Randolph Center; her parents, Donal White, Sr. of Randolph and Dorothy Monroe of Florida; her mother-in-law, Connie Manning of Morrisville; her father-in-law, Robert Swinchoski of Waterbury; three sisters, Roseann Weaver of Yakima, Wash.; Millie Green of Randolph; and Wendy Vandenberg of Hillsboro, Ore.; a brother, Donal White Jr. of Hillsboro, Ore.; two brothers-in-law, Philip and Christopher Surgen, both of Morrisville; a sister-in-law, Sheila Colombe of Barre; and many aunts, uncles, nieces and nephews.

Funeral services will be held Saturday, May 7, at 2 p.m. at the Day Funeral Home, with Rev. Jerry Smith officiating. Calling hours will be this Friday evening with Rev. Jerry Smith officiating. Calling hours will be this Friday evening, 7-9 p.m. at the funeral home.

Arrangements are under the direction of the Day Funeral Home of Randolph.

Olivia A. Hemond

BETHEL — Olivia A. Hemond, 91, died Tuesday, April 26, 2005, at her home in Bethel. She was born Jan. 17, 1914, in St. Albans, the daughter of Edward and Helen (Bennett) Willett. She attended school in St. Albans and married Merrill F. Hemond June 17, 1935. They lived briefly in St. Albans before moving to Bethel, where they lived the rest of their married life. He died Sept. 11, 1989.

For over 20 years, she worked at Gifford Hospital in Randolph, in many different capacities. Before retiring in 1981, she was the personal secretary for Dr. John Fachenthal and Dr. Richard Barrett.

She was a past member of the Catholic Daughters of America and the Central Vermont Public Service Advisory Committee. For over 33 years, she was a member of the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter Day Saints in South Royalton, where she taught Sunday school and was a member of the choir and the Women’s Relief Society. She was a very religious person, an active member of the Republican Party, and was a pro-life advocate.

She enjoyed reading, sewing, walking and exercise, flower and vegetable gardening, playing the piano, genealogy and traveling to many of the Latter Day Saints Temples.

Survivors include four sons, John "Jack" Hemond of Iron River, Mich., Patrick M. Hemond of San Antonio, Texas, Merrill F. Hemond Jr. of Princeton, N.J., and Christopher J. Hemond of Bethel; four daughters, Susan E. Bissonnette of Orlando, Fla., Kathleen J. Nerpouni of Chagrin Falls, Ohio, Jennifer M. Gates of CoCoa Beach, Fla., and Mary B. Hemond-Mack of Montpelier; 23 grandchildren and 26 great-grandchildren.

She was predeceased by a sister, Helen Dubois.

Calling hours were held Saturday, April 30, at the Boardway & Cilley Funeral Home on Main Street in Chelsea. A funeral service was held Monday, May 2, at the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter Day Saints on Dairy Hill in South Royalton with Randy Ferris conducting. Organist Elaine Soule and chorister Mary Harrington led the congregation in singing hymns "I Stand All Amazed, " "O My Father, " and "How Great Thou Art." Richard Perry gave the opening prayer and the speaker was Bob Ross. Kurt King played the guitar and sang songs he had written entitled "What My Lord Has in Store for Me, " and "The Hardest Thing."

Her children, grandchildren, and friends shared stories about her life and how much she meant to all of them. Jerry Kill gave the eulogy, followed by the benediction given by Janice Perron. The bearers were nine grandsons, Peter Hemond, Marshall Hemond, Eric Hemond, Michael Hemond, Bob Henderson, Aram Nerpouni, Greg Nerpouni, Joe Bissonnette and Patrick Bissonnette. Burial took place at the Fairview cemetery in Bethel.

Following the dedication of the grave, which was done by Olivia’s son, Patrick, all of her family and friends joined hands and circled the casket while bagpiper Ben Post played.

Samuel B. Karumba

NAIROBI, KENYA, EAST AFRICA — Samuel B. Karumba died April 11, 2005, in Nairobi, Kenya.

He was born in 1938 and did his elementary education in Kenya.

He first came to the US in 1960 under the JFK scholarship program. He lived in Morrisville, N.J., with a family while he did some of his high school education there. He finished high school at the Andover Academy in Andover, N.H., where he graduated. He entered Goddard College and graduated in 1968. During his college years, he married Bonnie Farrar of South Royalton and together they had two children, Njoroge and Mukuhi.

In 1968, he went to work for Kiewit Computer Center in Hanover, N.H., where he worked until 1979 when he and his family moved to California. There, he worked for Southern Pacific before accepting an offer with U.S. Sprint, where he worked as Senior Computer Consultant until 1997. He retired because of ill health and returned to Kenya, where he remained the rest of his life.

Survivors include a son, Njoroge of Derry, N.H.; a daughter, Mukuhi (Kris) of South Royalton; four grandsons: Kristian, Jesse, Robert and Romundo; one granddaughter, Hailee; and five brothers and two sisters, all of whom live in Kenya.

Services were held April 16 in Naivasha, Kenya, where he was buried next to his parents. Both of his children were blessed to have been able to be with their dad prior to his death and were present in Kenya at the time of his death.

Justin M. Kinney

RANDOLPH CENTER — Justin M. Kinney, 33, of Randolph Center, died Tuesday morning, May 3, 2005, at his home after a long illness.

Funeral services will be held Monday, May 9, at 10:30 a.m. at Day’s Funeral Home in Randolph. There are no calling hours. Burial will take place directly afterwards at Mountain View cemetery in Braintree.

In lieu of flowers, donations may be dropped off at any Randolph National Bank branch office for the Justin Kinney Memorial Scholarship Fund for his son, Mason.

Eugene Kennedy, Jr.

CHELSEA — Eugene H. "Putt" Kennedy, Jr., 94, died Sunday night, May 1, 2005, at the Riverbend Residential Care Home in Chelsea.

He was born Oct. 14, 1910, in Chelsea, the son of Alice C. (Druge) and Eugene H. Kennedy, Sr. He attended school in Chelsea. On Aug. 15, 1933, he married Alice L. Downing of Chelsea. They lived all their married life in Chelsea. She died Dec. 21, 1993.

He lived at Riverbend Residential Care Home since October 2004, where he entertained the residents with his fiddle playing. He was a self-employed logger and for many years managed the Chelsea dump. He also ran the gun mart out of his home, selling and trading guns and reloading thousands of rounds of rifle cartridges for many area sportsmen.

He was a member of the Chelsea Fish & Game Club of Chelsea. He enjoyed watching wrestling and baseball, and sharpening saws and knives. His true love was doing anything outside, pickerel shooting, deer and partridge hunting. He was a great shot at moving targets.

Survivors include two sons, Roy E. Kennedy of Corinth and Neil H. Kennedy of Chelsea; six grandchildren and four great-grandchildren; and several nieces, nephews and cousins.

He was predeceased by his wife, an infant daughter, Laura Belle Kennedy; seven brothers, James "Jim" Kennedy, Glenn Kennedy, John "Jack" Kennedy, Harry "Zeke" Kennedy, Walter "Peanut" Kennedy, Richard "Dick" Kennedy, and Maurice "Mike" Kennedy; and a sister, Ruth Kennedy.

In accordance with his wishes, there will be no public calling hours or funeral service. A private burial will be held at a later date in the Highland cemetery in Chelsea. In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be made to the Visiting Nurse Alliance of Vt. and N.H., 20 South Main Stret, White River Junction, Vt., 05001; or to Riverbend Recreation Fund, P.O. Box 7, Chelsea, Vt., 05038.

Arrangements are under the direction of the Boardway & Cilley Funeral Home on Main Street in Chelsea.

Louise C. Darrow

TUNBRIDGE — Louise C. Darrow, 101, died Wednesday, April 13, 2005, at the Berlin Health & Rehabilitation Center in Berlin. She was born Jan. 15, 1904, in Watertown, N.Y., the daughter of Armand J. and Mabel (Cook) Converse.

She was educated at St. Mary’s School, Oswego High School and Oswego State Teacher’s College, doing graduate work at Albany State Teacher’s College and Russell Sage College in Troy, N.Y.

In 1927, she married Harold W. Darrow of Stillwater, N.Y. For 39 years, she taught in the schools of Stillwater and Watervliet, N.Y. During summer vacations she was a mail order adjuster for Montgomery Ward in Albany, N.Y. During World War II, she was a dental technician for the Second Service Command stationed at the Watervliet Arsenal Hospital.

In 1968, the Darrows moved from Schenectady, N.Y., to Vermont, living in Warren before moving to Tunbridge in 1970. Her husband died Oct. 6, 1980. She was a member of the N.Y.S.U.T. in New York State, in Vermont, the Orange County Retired Teacher’s Association, Chelsea & South Royalton Area Senior Citizens, North Tunbridge Ladies Aid and St. Matthew’s Church in South Royalton.

She enjoyed her Siamese cats, "Ching" and "Meiling, " traveling on bus trips, scrap books, gardening, handicrafts, and going out to eat with her good friend, Marion Miller.

She is survived by several cousins and many friends.

A calling hour was held Sunday, April 17, at the Boardway & Cilley Funeral Home on Main Street in Chelsea. A Mass of Christian Burial was held Monday, April 18, at St. Anthony’s Catholic Church in Bethel with Father Lance Harlow officiating. Organist Mary Parmenter accompanied soloist Mary Ann Church in singing hymns. The bearers were Calon Miller, Bob Gavin, Rob Howe and William Field. A graveside committal service was held Tuesday, April 19, at the Stillwater Union cemetery in Stillwater, N.Y.

In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be made to either the Tunbridge Church, in care of Euclid Farnham, 24 The Crossroad, Tunbridge, Vt., 05077, or to St. Anthony’s Catholic Church, P.O. Box 63, Bethel, Vt., 05032.
