Nicholas Small

Brookfield — Nicholas (Nick) Small, 20, died Tuesday, May 10, 2011.

Arrangements are pending at the Day Funeral Home in Randolph.

Rhoades Services

Graveside services for Jean A. Rhoades, 89, of Rochester, who died May 2, 2011, were held Friday afternoon, May 6 at Woodlawn cemetery in Rochester, with Rev. Gregory Homan officiating.

Remembrances were shared by Jakey Twitchell and Marv Harvey. Pallbearers were Dennis Rhoades, Brian Curtis, Tyson Curtis, Justin Curtis, John Fitzpatrick, and Gordon Bedell. A reception followed at the Rochester Federated Church.

Arrangements were by the Day Funeral Home in Randolph.

Joan Mayer

SOUTH ROYALTON — Joan Mayer, 77, died Tuesday, Jan. 9, 2007 at Gifford Memorial Hospital in Randolph.

Born in New York City and educated in the public schools, she earned her BA from Hunter College in 1950, and her Masters degree at the State University of New York in 1968. She taught junior and high school science in Rockland County, N.Y.; where she and the growing family lived from 1956-86. She and her husband traveled extensively through Europe, and the Middle and Far East.

After relocating in South Royalton in 1986, she became a member of the South Royalton Women’s Club, of which she served as President from 1994-96. She helped raise the funds that went to expand the South Royalton School Library.

As a member of the South Royalton Democratic Club, she was elected to serve as Justice of the Peace for several terms, and in August 2000 was selected as a delegate to the Democratic National Convention in Los Angeles. A prized moment was meeting President Bill Clinton on Veteran’s Day 2000 at a White House breakfast.

Survivors include her husband, Monroe (Monte) Mayer; four sons: Tavian and Ilerdon of South Royalton, Barton of Concord, N.H., and Livian of New York City; and five grandchildren: Jacon, Eliza, Hanna, Jessica and Cassi.

Internment occurred in Lebanon, NH.

Leta Louise Young

Randolph Center — Leta Louise (Ward) Young, 88, of 705 Neighbor Road, formerly of Meriden, Conn., died peacefully June 14, 2011 in Randolph.

A daughter of the late Leon R. Ward and Pauline (Austin) Kistler, she was born in Springfield, Mass., graduating from Springfield Technical High School, Class of 1940.

On January 8, 1941, she married Charles Henry Young of Wallingford, Conn. She and her husband owned and operated High Hill Orchard in Meriden, Conn., until retiring in 1980. Although retired, they returned seasonally to help on the family farm, especially during harvest time. She was a member of the Seventh-day Adventist Church.

Survivors include three sons, Charles H. (Joyce) Young, Jr. of Calhoun, Ga., David H. (Darlene) Young of Randolph Center, and Wayne H. (Emily) Young of Meriden, Conn.; five grandchildren; and a sister, Esther Strout.

A memorial service will be held at a later date. Arrangements are being handled by Pearsons Funeral Home in Lyndonville.

Barrows Services

Graveside memorial services for John Barrows, 77, of Stockbridge, who died March 8, 2011, will be held Saturday, June 18 at 1:30 p.m. at the Pittsfield Village cemetery. with Rev. Howard Gunter officiating.

Arrangements are by Day Funeral Home in Randolph.

Bessette Services

Memorial services for Carrie L. Bessette, 82, of Hancock, who died June 3, 2011, will be held Saturday, June 18 at 10:30 a.m. at the Community Church of Hancock-Granville in Hancock, with Rev. Wayne Holsman officiating.

Burial will follow at Hancock Village cemetery. Arrangements are by the Day Funeral Home in Randolph.

William J. Fiske

ROCHESTER — William John Fiske, 54, died in his sleep July 18, 2008, in Burlington.

The son of Barbara (Isabelle) Calhoun and Irving Fiske, co-founders of the Quarry Hill Creative Center in Rochester, he was born February 4, 1954, in Brooklyn, N.Y. He grew up at Quarry Hill and in the Ocala National Forest in central Florida, where the Fiskes wintered. In an educational choice rare for the era, he was home-schooled and largely self-taught. He mastered many subjects, especially mathematics and science, earning two masters’ degrees from the University of Vermont, in computer science and in history. At the time of his death he was pursuing a Ph.D. in computer science.

He was an accomplished classical musician on flute and recorder, an excellent writer, a mathematician who could explain abstruse mathematical concepts to almost anyone, an innovative photographer whose work appeared in Vermont Life, and a thespian with New York's Living Theater. In the early 1990s, he published the groundbreaking Digitas, an electronic journal of the arts, featuring early work by artists like the filmmaker Jim Jarmusch. He was a member of the Rochester Historical Society.

A businessman as well, for many years he was President of Lyman Hall, Inc., which owns and runs the Quarry Hill Creative Center. A pioneer in the field of blood banking software, he established two cutting-edge software firms, Bioheuristics, Inc., and William Fiske Associates. He was a mentor to a number of now-prominent members of the IT community. In 1986, he was guest lecturer on medical expert systems at Beijing University.

Survivors include his mother, Barbara Calhoun, and stepfather, Dr. Donald Calhoun; his children, Jason and Eva Us, and grandchildren, Isaiah Simon and Amir Malik; his former partner, Stefani Us; his ex-wife, Anne Fitzgerald; his sister, Isabella (Ladybelle) Fiske McFarlin, and brother-in-law, Brion McFarlin; a niece, nephew, aunt, and cousins.

Family and friends will soon hold a celebration of his life, at a date to BE determined. In lieu of flowers, contributions to an educational fund for his grandchildren would be immensely appreciated. Donations designated "For the Isaiah/Amir Educational Fund" may be made directly to the Randolph National Bank, Rochester, Vt. 05767. If preferred, donations may also be made to the Rochester Historical Society.

Sherman Manning

FROSTPROOF, FLA. — Sherman A. Manning, 65, a former Randolph area resident, died October 15, 2008 at his home, following a short illness.

Family and friends will gather this Saturday, Oct. 25 at 1 p.m. at the Braintree Town Hall to celebrate his life. All attending are invited to bring a potluck dish and there will be bluegrass music, since that was his favorite. Anyone who would like to share stories and/or pictures from his life is welcome to do so.

Richard Hauger

THETFORD — Richard Hauger, 63, of 255 Hauger Road died at home Tuesday evening Dec. 12, 2000, after a year long battle with lymphoma cancer.

He was born March 23, 1937 in Patterson, N.J. the son of Oscar and Sarah (Finucan) Hauger. A 1955 graduate of Ridgewood (NJ) High School, he attended the University of Vermont and New England College, graduating in 1960 with a degree in civil engineering.

He initially worked for the Vermont Highway Department monitoring road construction on Interstate 89 and other state highways, and briefly for Pinello Engineering & Bridge in Bethel. In 1970, he accepted a position as the first Director of Public Works in Hanover, N.H, retiring in 1998. For a short period, he also served as Hanover’s interim town manager and president of the Hanover Water Company in 1983.

The town of Hanover honored him in 1997 for his many years of devotion to the community and his outstanding contributions as Director of Public Works, by naming the public works facility after him.

In 1967 he moved to Thetford. He was extensively involved in his home community, serving three years as a town selectman, and 10 years as a trustee for Thetford Academy. In 1998, he volunteered to serve as clerk of the works for the construction of a new maintenance facility, improved parking areas, and landscaping at Thetford Academy. He was presented a chair by the Academy honoring his service and dedication. He was a member of Jackson Lodge #60 of West Fairlee since 1959, and was a founder of Treasure Island public beach on Lake Fairlee.

A dedicated family man, Mr. Hauger cherished his good marriage to his wife, Marvel Hauger whom he married June 10, 1961 in Strafford. He will be remembered for his friendly, easygoing personality. He would want everyone to subscribe to the motto: "Get along with others, and you will get along with yourself."

Besides his wife, he is survived by three children: Corrinne Hauger of Berkeley, Calif., Stephanie Hauger Clark of Fairlee, and Vaughn Hauger of Boise, Idaho; two grandchildren; his mother, Sarah Hauger of Lebanon, N.H.; a brother, David Hauger of Thetford; a sister, Lois Hauger Wiggen of Fairlee, and nieces and nephews.

Funeral services will be held Saturday, Dec. 16 at 2 p.m. in the First Congregational Church on Thetford Hill. Burial will follow in Hillside cemetery in Thetford. There are no calling hours.

Donations in his memory may be made to the Visiting Nurse Alliance of NH & VT, Mount Support Road, Lebanon, N.H 03766, or the Norris Cotton Cancer Center, Medical Center Drive, Lebanon, N.H. 03766. Arrangements are under the direction of Hale Funeral Homes of Thetford and Bradford.

Robert Hebert

Cross Lake, Maine — Robert Hebert, 82, died October 1, 2011 at home surrounded by his family.

He worked for the Maine Dept of Transportation for over 30 years.

He is survived by his wife of 64 years, Madeline Bouchard Hebert, of Cross Lake, Maine; two sons, Reynold of Eagle Lake, Maine, and Jerry Hebert of Randolph Center; two daughters, Lorraine Dionne of Englewood, Fla., and Brenda Michaud of Fort Kent, Maine; four brothers; 13 sisters; and many grandchildren.

Funeral services took place Wednesday, Oct. 5 at St. Joseph Church in Sinclair, Maine.
