G. WILLIAM LAWTON

ST. ALBANS -- Mr. G. William Lawton, age 77, died Monday morning, June 23, 2003, in Redstone Villa. He was born in St. Albans, Jan. 4, 1926, son of the late John and Julia (Dwyer) Lawton.

Bill retired as Administrative Assistant in Sales for the Central Vermont Railway and the Canadian National Railway. From 1977 to 1988 Bill was employed in Security for the Fonda Container Corp. Prior to his railroad employment he was a St. Albans City Police Officer and for many years was a Franklin County Deputy Sheriff. He also served Franklin County as a Justice of the Peace and was a St. Albans City Alderman.

Bill served in the U.S. Army during World War II and was a member and past president of the Veterans of Foreign Wars Robert E. Glidden Post 758. Bill was a member of the Franklin County Harbor Club and the American Legion Green Mountain Post 1. Bill enjoyed cribbage and "500" card games at the clubs. He was a communicant of St. Mary's Church.

On May 24, 1948, he married Evelyn Benham. Besides his wife of over 55 years, he is survived by their two daughters and their husbands, Sheila and Wayne Gilman of Barre, and Kellie and Roger Jette; two sons, Michael Lawton, and Gary and his wife Rose Lawton, all of St. Albans; 13 grandchildren; 10 great-grandchildren; two sisters, Joan DuBiago of Pallantine, Ill., and Shirlie DeCostanza of West Orange, N.J.; and several nieces, nephews and cousins. Besides his parents he was predeceased by his daughter, Valerie J. Plant, on Sept. 11, 1990, his sister, Mary Daniels, and his brother, Dwyer Lawton, and a special sister-in-law, Elizabeth English.

Evelyn and her family wish to express their most sincere gratitude to the staff of Redstone Villa, for the excellent care and compassion extended to Bill during his most recent illness.

Funeral services will be held Thursday at 10 a.m. in the Brady & Levesque Chapel, 86 South Main St., St. Albans. Full military honors will be accorded Bill with burial to follow in the Lawton family lot in Holy Cross Cemetery. There will be no public calling hours.

In lieu of flowers, memorials may be made to the Harbor Club, 34 Kingman St., St. Albans, Vt. 05478, or to the Patient Fund of Redstone Villa, 7 Forrest Hill Drive, St. Albans, Vt. 05478.

Arrangements are entrusted to the Brady & Levesque Funeral Home.

ADALENE ALENA LEMNAH

EAST HIGHGATE / FAIRFAX -- Adalene Alena Lemnah, age 90, passed away on her birthday in the early morning hours of Monday, June 23, 2003, at Haven Health Care in St. Albans. She was born in Brookfield, VT on June 23, 1913, daughter of the late Paul and Mary S. (LaBounty) Lapan. She was married to Harry W. Lemnah on Dec. 29, 1935, in East Highgate, who predeceased her on Aug. 1, 1981. Adalene worked many years in area establishments as a cook and started the hot lunch program in the East Highgate School. She was an advocate for senior citizens in Franklin County, representing them at times in Washington, D.C. Adalene enjoyed cooking, gardening and canning, knitting, crocheting, and reading. Some of her favorite subjects were poetry and Vermont in the Civil War, especially books written by Howard Coffin, whom she had the pleasure of meeting several times. She will be dearly missed by her loving family and many friends.

She is survived by one son, Ralph Lemnah and his wife Claire of Fairfax; one daughter, Mary Putnam and her husband Ralph of Burlington; one brother, Lawrence Lapan of East Highgate; one sister, Norma Gokey of New Jersey; five grandchildren; nine great-grandchildren; and many nieces, nephews, and cousins.

She was also predeceased by several brothers and sisters.

Visiting hours will be held on Tuesday, June 24, 2003, from 6 to 9 p.m. at the Hayes-Rich Funeral Home. A Mass of Christian Burial will be celebrated on Wednesday, June 25, 2003, at 11 a.m. in St. Louis Church, Highgate Center, with Reverend John J. Meagher officiating. Interment will follow in the family lot in St. Louis Cemetery, Highgate Center.

Memorial contributions may be made in Adalene's memory to the Highgate Historical Society, PO Box 222, Highgate Center, Vt. 05459.

Arrangements are by Hayes-Rich Funeral Home, 1176 Main St. Fairfax.

JANET GIROUX

ST. ALBANS, Vt. / TUCSON, Ariz. Janet Giroux, 74, died peacefully in the early morning hours of June 10, 2003, at the Rosa Chante Health Care Facility in Tucson, Ariz., following a short illness. Janet was born in St. Albans on Oct. 12, 1928, the daughter of Clarence and Isabell Hance.

Janet is survived by her husband of nearly 53 years, Norman F. Giroux of St. Albans/Tucson, and their children and grandchildren; Norman Giroux, Jr. and his daughter, Kathyrn; Mary Thorpe, her husband Patrick and daughter, Alexandra; and, Marsha Galvin, her husband John and their children, Elizabeth and John. Janet also leaves her brother and sisters, James Hance, Mary Jane Barber and Margaret Prior. Both her parents and older sister, Patricia McGrath, predeceased her.

Prior to retiring to Arizona, Janet was a parishioner at St. Mary's Roman Catholic Church in St. Albans and an active member of the Catholic Daughters.

Interment will be in the Giroux family lot in Mount Calvary Cemetery. A memorial service will be held at St. Mary's Church July 7, at 11 a.m

GLENNA (FLEURY) SHERRER

RICHFORD -- Glenna (Fleury) Sherrer, age 75, died Sunday, June 22, 2003, following a brief illness. Glenna was born May 28, 1928, in Fairfield, the daughter of the late Noah and Mildred (Reed) Fleury.

Glenna was a resident of Richford most of her life, and she was a graduate of Richford High School. She was also a member of the Richford Methodist Church where she was an active volunteer. She was known for her crafts. Her friends were many, and she will be missed. She married Lloyd Sherrer in 1950. He predeceased her in 1983.

She is survived by her children, Ricky Sherrer and his wife Carole of Richford, Leonard Sherrer of Richford, Elwin Sherrer of Burlington, Brenda Marcoux and her friend Raymond Phillips of Berkshire, and Sandra Stratton and her husband Hiram of Maple Grove, Minn.; two sisters, Gila Domina and her husband Harlan of Montgomery and Dorothy Jewett of Richford; a brother, Daton Fleury and his wife Virginia of Berkshire; five grandchildren, Gregory Marcoux, Nicholas and Samantha Sherrer, Arielle and Miranda Stratton; several nieces and nephews, and many friends. Besides her husband she was predeceased by two grandsons, Alexander Sherrer and Bradley Marcoux; a brother, Dennis Fleury; and a sister, Glee Clark.

Funeral services will be held Wednesday morning at 11 a.m. at the Richford Methodist Church with Pastor Kate Tobey officiating.

Visiting hours will be held Tuesday from 2 to 4 and 7 to 9 p.m. at the Spears Funeral Home, 140 Main Street, Richford.

MARIAN K. CHAGNON

ST. ALBANS -- Mrs. Marian K. Chagnon, age 89, died Tuesday afternoon, June 17, 2003, in Holiday House Nursing Home. Marian was born in Swanton, Nov. 13, 1913.

She married Clement "Joe" Chagnon, Nov. 10, 1930. Joe died Jan. 31, 1977. She was the manager of Joe's I.G.A., in Sheldon Springs for many years and later established The Foodliner in St. Albans. Later she was employed by Wm. Doolin & Company and J.C. Penney Store, both in St. Albans.

Marian was a past member and former President of the St. Albans Area Chamber of Commerce. She was a member of the American Legion Auxiliary Unit 1 of St. Albans, and a former member of the Business and Professional Women's Club.

She is survived by her daughter, Wanda and her husband Stanley White of St. Albans; three grandchildren, Gary and his wife Debbie White, Stephen and his wife Pamela White, all of St. Albans, and Mark and his wife Denise White of Fairfield; four great-grandchildren; and a great-great-grandson; and several nieces and nephews. Besides her husband and parents, she was predeceased by her sisters, Pauline Norris and Dorothy Frazier.

Graveside funeral services will be held Tuesday at 10 a.m. in Holy Cross Cemetery. Interment will follow in the family lot in Holy Cross Cemetery. There will be no public calling hours.

Those planning an expression of sympathy are asked to consider the Franklin County Home Health Agency, 3 Home Health Circle, St. Albans, Vt. 05478.

ANNE S. DEMING

SOUTH BURLINGTON/ST. ALBANS -- Anne S. Deming died Sunday, May 18, 2003, at Fletcher Allen Hospital after a short illness. She was born July 29, 1926, the daughter of Isabelle and John Deming of St. Albans.

After graduating from Bellows Free Academy she joined the Student Nurse Corp, receiving training and subsequent certification at St. Luke's and Staten Island Marine Hospital in New York City. She then spent over 22 years in the Army Nurse Corp serving her country at military hospitals throughout this country and abroad including Japan, the Evacuation Hospital in Korea and the American Hospital in Paris. She particularly enjoyed her professional colleagues and the foreign travel.

She retired as Lieutenant Colonel in 1975 and moved back to Vermont. She built a house in Georgia to be near her parents and was able to provide care for them in their final years. Like her mother, she gave much of her time to volunteering for various agencies, including Holiday House, the Franklin County Humane Society, the Kings Daughters Home where she also served on the Board of Directors and the Women's Fellowship at the First Congregational Church.

She adored her nieces and nephew and their several children and together they formed a formidable mutual admiration society. She traveled often to various dog shows with one of her nieces, and enjoyed socializing with friends from childhood days in St. Albans and professional colleagues from her military service.

She is remembered by her family and friends for her sense of humor and as a kind, thoughtful and generous lady.

She is survived by a brother, Howard Randall Deming M.D. and his wife Ann of Cape Elizabeth, Maine; a nephew, Jonathon Deming of Keeseville, N.Y.; nieces Catherine Farnsworth of South Royalton, VT., Elizabeth Dauten of Northfield, Ill., and Laura Deming of Salisbury, N.H.; and several grand-nieces and nephews.

A memorial service will be held on Friday, June 27, 2003, at 11 a.m. in the First Congregational Church, Church Street in St. Albans with the Reverend Judy Kennedy officiating. There will be no visitation. Interment will be in the Deming family lot in Sheldon Village Cemetery.

In lieu of flowers memorial donations may be made to the Franklin County Humane Society, 30 Sunset Meadows, St. Albans, Vt. 05478.

Arrangements are by the Heald Funeral Home, 87 So. Main St., St. Albans.

AUDREY L. TAYLOR

FRANKLIN/RICHFORD -- Audrey L. Taylor, age 77, died Wednesday, June 18, 2003, at the Northwestern Medical Center in St. Albans. She was born in Burlington, Feb. 22, 1926, the daughter of the late Clifford J. and Beatrice (Wells) Shangraw.

She moved to Richford in 1976, and for the past two years she made her home in Franklin at the Carriage House. She was a 1943 graduate of Burlington High School and was employed at S.S.. Kresge in Burlington for 10 years. She then married Michael F. Taylor on Nov. 18, 1952, at which time she devoted her time to raising her family. Audrey was an avid gardener.

She is survived by four sons and their wives, Michael F. Taylor II of Burlington, Timothy and Lorraine Taylor of Colorado Springs, Colo., Stephen and Donna Taylor of Williston, S.C., and Patrick and Karen Taylor of Evans, Ga.; two daughters and their husband, Katie and Robert St. Pierre, and Janet and Ronald West, all of Richford; 14 grandchildren; two great-grandchildren; four brothers and their wives, Everett and Pat Shangraw of St. Charles, Mo., and Richard and Kathy Shangraw of Roswell, N.M.; three sisters, Virginia Pendriss of Colchester, Janet Yendrezeski of Travares, Fla. and Patricia Delaney of Cape Coral, Fla.; one brother-in-law, Peter Taylor of Stone Mountain, Ga.; one sister-in-law, Sheila DeGrasse of Palmetto, Fla.; and several nieces and nephews. She was predeceased by her husband, Michael F. Taylor, on April 14, 2002.

Funeral services will be held Saturday, June 21, 2003, at 10 a.m. at the Spears Funeral Home, 96 Dickenson Ave., Enosburg Falls, with Pastor Patrick Hoadley officiating. Interment will follow at 1 p.m. at the Lakeview Cemetery in Burlington.

Visiting hours will be held Friday afternoon from 3 to 6 at the Spears Funeral Home in Enosburg Falls.

MARY JANE BELVAL

MILTON -- Mary Jane Belval, 85, of Milton, passed away at home with her family at her side on Thursday morning, June 19, 2003, following a short illness.

Mary was born Aug. 1, 1917 in St. Joachin, P.Q., Canada, the daughter of Emile and Dorila Stanislas Pigeon. On April 8, 1936, she married Charles Albert Belval. He predeceased her in 1973.

Mary retired from the Mary Fletcher Hospital after working for several years in the hospital bakery and cafeteria. Following her retirement she ran her own bakery on Prim road in Colchester and on Route 7 in Milton until its closing in the early 70's.

Mary and Charles raised seven children who survive her: Gloria Tremblay and her husband Paul of Georgia; Pauline Belval of Milton; Louis Belval and his wife Mary of St. Albans Bay; Roland Belval, Theresa Maynard, Rita Dupree and her husband Roger and Leo Belval and his wife Cheryl, all of Milton; and a daughter-in-law, Madeline Belval of Essex; 20 grandchildren; and numerous great-grandchildren. She leaves six brothers and sisters, Roland Pigeon and his wife Nettie of Westford, Annette Boutin of Essex, George Pigeon and his wife Theresa of Florida, Raymond Pigeon and his wife Claudette of Georgia, Ida LaRoche of Highgate, and Doris Emmons and her husband Albert of Winooski; and a sister-in-law, Jeannine Pigeon of Swanton. She was predeceased by two brothers, Morris and Paul Pigeon; and three sisters, Marie Pigeon, Cora Brosseau and Alice LeFerrier.

A Mass of Christian Burial will be celebrated on Saturday, June 21, at 1 p.m. in Our Lady of Grace Roman Catholic Church, Main St. Colchester, with Father Jay Haskins celebrant. Burial will follow in New Mount Calvary Cemetery in Burlington.

Memorial contributions may be made to the Hospice of the Champlain Valley, c/o the Visiting Nurse Association, 1110 Prim Road, Suite 1, Colchester, Vt. 05446

Visiting hours will be held this evening from 7 to 9 p.m. in the Minor Funeral Home, Rt. 7, Milton.
