LEO FRANCIS SMITH
ST. ALBANS - Leo Francis Smith, 80, a lifelong area resident and businessman, passed away on Tuesday evening, July 12, 2005, at his home with his family at his side. He was born in St. Albans on Aug. 7, 1924, the son of the late Thomas Timothy and Nellie (O'Neill) Smith. On May 16, 1953, at Christ the King Church in Rutland, Vt., Leo married the former Mary Jane Duffy, who survives him.

Leo graduated from St. Mary's High School and was a member of St. Mary's Roman Catholic Church. He worked in the restaurant business for 44 years, starting with his father at the St. Albans House on Lake Street. In March of 1967, Leo and his brother, John founded and operated The Cornerstone Restaurant and Tom's Lounge on the corner of Kingman and Federal Streets until their retirement in June of 1987. Leo sold Christmas trees for 25 years after beginning his business with his good friend, Dick Hungerford and then with Jim O'Connor. He also worked for many years at the Driscoll and Moran Memorial Home. He was a lifetime member of St. Albans Lodge 1566, B.P.O.E. and the Owl Club and he enjoyed playing golf at the Champlain Country Club.

Survivors include his wife of 52 years, Mary Jane Smith of St. Albans; four sons: Stephen Smith and his fiancee, Susan Coleman, Michael Smith and Loree Garceau, Timothy Smith and his fiancee, Denise Beliveau and Kevin and Christine Smith, all of St. Albans; three daughters: Joanne and Kevin McGinn and Sally and Greg Sargent, all of St. Albans, and Shannon and Andrew Maass of Proctor, Vt.; two sisters: Catherine Flaherty of Winsted, Conn. and Virginia Stapleton of Ridgewood, N.J.; 14 grandchildren: Bryan and Hilary Smith, Katherine, Maureen and Anne McGinn, Colin Smith, Amanda and Cody Choquette, Eddie, Ellen and Charlie Sargent, Richard, Claire and Peter Maass; two sisters-in-law: Lena Smith of St. Albans and Joanne Grace of Canton, Conn.; his good friend, Merrill Hungerford of St. Albans; and the family canine companion, Kramer; and several nieces and nephews. Leo was predeceased by his parents; his brother, John; and his brothers-in-law: William Flaherty, Paul Stapleton and William Grace.

At Leo's request, he wanted to take this opportunity, on behalf of himself, his brother and partner, John to thank all their customers over the past years of business at the St. Albans House, Tom's Lounge and the Cornerstone Restaurant as well as all the employees that worked for them and their success. Thank you all very much, it was greatly appreciated.

A funeral service will be held on Saturday, July 16, 2005, at 2 p.m. in St. Mary's Roman Catholic Church, Fairfield Street, with the Reverend Leonidas B. Laroche celebrating a Mass of Christian Burial. Interment will follow in the family lot Holy Cross Cemetery. Leo's family will receive friends on Friday from 4 to 7 p.m. at the Heald Funeral Home, 87 South Main St., St. Albans.

DOROTHY M. MASTALER
LAKE WORTH, Fla. — Dorothy M. Mastaler, 89, passed away into the arms of our Lord on Sunday, July 3, 2005, in Lake Worth, Fla.

Dorothy graduated, worked and retired as a Registered Nurse at Brattleboro Memorial Hospital in Brattleboro, Vt.

She was predeceased by her husband, Wallace A. Mastaler. She is survived by her only daughter, Jane E. Medor of Lake Worth, Fla.; four grandchildren: Kimberly Williams, Michelle Cutting of Vermont and Beth Burkhardt and Pamela Valenti of Florida; nine great-grandchildren; one great-great-granddaughter; several nieces and nephews; and many friends, a number of which reside in northwestern Vermont.

A memorial service will be held in Brattleboro, Vt. at a later date in the fall.

KATHRYN CHASE CONTI
SILVER SPRING, Md. / ST. ALBANS, Vt. - Mrs. Kathryn Chase Conti, 88, a former resident of Bradenton, Fla. and a summer resident of St. Albans on Lake Champlain, passed away on Monday, Jan. 17, 2005. She was born in Cambridge, Vt. on Nov. 29, 1916, the daughter of the late Allen A. and Katherine (Burritt) Chase. She was the widow of Reno J. Conti, who predeceased her on Nov. 13, 1997. Kathryn and Reno lived and worked in Washington, D.C. before they retired.

Kathryn was a veteran of World War II serving in the Women's Army Corps from 1944 to 1946. She started her medical career in the army and then was the advisor for staff development at the Greater Southeastern Hospital in Washington D.C. until her retirement in 1978. She was a member of WIMSA and the American Legion.

Survivors include three daughters: Kathy Conti of Glenwood, Md., Terri Conti of Washington, D.C., and Eleanor Conti-Parker of San Diego, Calif.; seven grandchildren and four great-grandchildren. Besides her parents and husband Reno, she was predeceased by a brother, James Otis Chase; and a sister, Alfreda Chase Murphy.

A celebration of Kathryn's life will be on Saturday, July 16, 2005, at 11 a.m. in the Heald Funeral Chapel. Interment will be at the convenience of the family in Holy Cross Cemetery.

GEORGE DARWIN BENHAM
ST. ALBANS - George Darwin Benham, 81, a lifelong resident of this area, passed away unexpectedly Sunday, July 10, 2005, at Northwestern Medical Center. He was born in St. Albans, Feb. 4, 1924, the son of the late Carl Darwin and Evelyn (Fayres) Benham. His beloved wife, Lorraine (Alexander) Benham, died Feb. 23, 1999.

George graduated from Bellows Free Academy in St. Albans and started as a Machinist Apprentice for Central Vermont Railway. He retired in 1982 as Chief Mechanical Officer after 38 years of service. He was a member of the U.S. Naval Reserve during World War II, was a life member of Green Mountain Post 1, American Legion, and belonged to St. Albans Lodge 1566, BPOE, Franklin Lodge 4, F & AM, and was a former member of the Owl Club and the Georgia Volunteer Fire Dept., where he served as Chief.

George was a winter resident of the Bahamian Club in New Smyrna Beach, Fla. Throughout his life he enjoyed fishing, bowling, golfing, knock rummy, and summer sunsets at his camp on Lake Champlain, but every day he especially enjoyed his "Big Breakfast" and a good cigar. Anyone who knew George appreciated his handyman abilities and willingness to fix anything for them.

Survivors include his son, Stephen Darwin Benham and his wife, Corinne, of Swanton; his daughter, Patricia B. Duchesneau and her partner, Kenneth Wittlief, of Williston; three grandchildren: Kerry Delaney of San Diego, Calif., Paige Benham of Winooski and Lance Darwin Benham of Newton, Mass.; a sister, Evelyn Lawton of St. Albans; and many special friends in this area and Florida. In addition to his wife of 51 years, Lorraine, he was predeceased by his parents; a brother, Carl Benham; and a sister, Elizabeth English.

A funeral service will be held on Friday at 11 a.m. in St. Luke's Episcopal Church. Interment will be in the family lot in St. Albans Bay Cemetery. Another Memorial Service will be held this winter in Florida at a time to be announced.

In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be sent to St. Peter the Fisherman Episcopal Church, 4212 Saxon Drive, New Smyrna Beach, FL 32169.

Visitation will be on Thursday from 4 to 7 p.m. in the Heald Funeral Home, 87 South Main St., St. Albans.

LORRAINE A. LAWRENCE
ST. ALBANS - Mrs. Lorraine A. Lawrence, age 91, died Tuesday, July 12, 2005, in the Northwestern Medical Center. She was born in East Fairfield, Dec. 17, 1913, daughter of the late Jerry and Anna (Archambault) Corron.

She was a former employee of The Woolen Mills in Winooski. She was a member of the Ladies of St. Anne, Women of the Moose, Chapter 321, Franklin County Senior Center and was an avid card and bingo player. She was an exceptional cook and enjoyed knitting. She was the widow of Moses Lawrence, who died in 1977.

She is survived by her nine children and their spouses: Lorraine and Pat Garrow of Cartersville, Ga., James and Agnes Lawrence of Brooksville, Fla., Winfield and Diane Lawrence of Virginia, Moses and Donna Lawrence of Brooksville, Fla., Marion Bombardier, Mary Gervais, Rita and Harold Gagnon, all of St. Albans, Ilene and Robert Pampano of New Haven, Conn., David Lawrence of Essex Junction; 19 grandchildren, 25 great-grandchildren, two great-great-grandchildren; and several nieces and nephews. She was predeceased by all of her eight siblings: Amelia Smith, Jerry Corron, Winfield Corron, Charles Corron, Philip Corron, Lucille Corron, Marita Bean and Marion Ledoux.

A Mass of Christian Burial will be celebrated Friday at 9 a.m. in Holy Angels Church. Friends may call at the Brady & Levesque Funeral Home, 86 South Main St., St. Albans, from 2 to 4 and 7 to 9 p.m. Thursday. A Women of the Moose Service will be held at 8 p.m. Thursday. Interment will be at 2 p.m. Friday in Holy Family Cemetery, Essex Junction.

JACQUELINE SCHILLING
Jacqueline McCormick Schilling died on July 2, 2005, at the UCD Medical Center in Sacramento, Calif. A resident of Davis, Calif. since 1963, she was 80 years old.

Born July 8, 1924, in St. Albans, Vt. to Dr. Thomas Allen and Ruby Hartmann McCormick, she graduated from Bellows Free Academy and the University of Vermont.

She was the widow of Dr. Stanley Schilling. They met as students while both were attending UVM. They were married in St. Albans in 1949.

Before settling in Davis, Jackie and her family lived in Madison, Wis.; Lihue, Hawaii; Weimar, Calif. and San Francisco. She and Stanley also lived in the Capay Valley. Jackie returned to Davis upon his death.

Jackie's lifelong passions were cooking and knitting. She was famous for her piroshki, pomegranate jelly, curry powder pickles and Christmas rosettes. She frequently hosted knitting parties at her home and knitted with friends at the Davis Senior Center.

She was also active in the Yolo County Medical Society Auxiliary. Jackie was noted for her part in the auxiliary's puppet shows at elementary schools throughout the county that emphasized proper childhood nutrition.

She loved being around children and volunteered for many years as a teacher's aide at Fairfield Elementary and Willett Elementary Schools in Davis, Calif.

She is survived by her sons: Reuben, Jonathan and Tyler; daughter-in-law, Joyce Akiyoshi Schilling; and grandchildren, Sally and Jack Schilling, all of the Davis area; sister, Jane Sumner of Williston, Vt.; sister-in-law, Jackie Beanland McCormick of Geneva, N.Y.; and many nieces and nephews. She was preceded in death by her brothers, Fuller S. and Thomas A. McCormick, MD.

The family invites all of her friends to a gathering to celebrate her life on Saturday, July 23, at 3 p.m. at her home in Davis, Calif.

ESTHER MAUD (SHEPARD) CHOINIERE
Esther Maud (Shepard) Choiniere passed away July 3, 2005, in the Palliative Care Unit of the Northumberland Hills Hospital in Cobourg, Ontario. She was born on Dec. 16, 1930, in Beebe, Quebec.

Esther and John were married in 1950 and they gave life and love to five children who mourn her passing: Jacqueline (Peter Sparrow), Douglas (Barbara), Phillip (Gwen), Jane Nawroth (Rick) and Paul. Esther leaves nine grandchildren and two-great grandchildren; three siblings: Freda Hibbard of Beebe, Quebec, Raymond Shepard of Magog, Quebec, and Louise Poulton of St. Albans; also nephew, John Grant of Sheldon; and nieces: Joan Grant of St. Albans, Debbie (Bernie) Lamoureux of Swanton; as well as many other nieces and nephews.

Esther was predeceased by husband, John, in 1976; seven siblings: Linnie Shepard, Leona Shepard, Gladys Carr, Elwin Shepard, Barbara Henderson, Derward Shepard, and just one week ago, Elaine Ann Grant.

Funeral services were held at MacCoubrey Funeral Home, 30 King St., E. Cobourg, Ontario on Wednesday, July 6.

RONALD E. PRINCE, SR.
COLCHESTER - Ronald E. Prince Sr., 68, Vermont native and long-time resident of Colchester, passed away peacefully early Monday morning, July 11, 2005, at his home. Ron was born in Burlington to Willard and Ella (Owens) Prince on Oct. 29, 1936. He graduated from Burlington High School in 1955 and married JoAnn M. Raymond, also of Burlington, in 1956. After a brief time in Chicago, the couple returned to Vermont in 1960 to raise their family. Ron worked for 22 years as a draftsman for General Electric during which time he was awarded several joint patents. He retired early to pursue his love of the outdoors, owning and operating two businesses in Colchester, Pine Haven Campground since 1978, and Ron’s Bait and Tackle since 1980. He served his country as a member of the Air National Guard and Air Reserve for 8 years. Ron enjoyed hunting, fishing, and was a member of the American Bowlers Congress most of his life. He spent many memorable hours discussing local events with his friends at the Milton Diner.

Ron had a keen interest in genealogy, tracing his family back to the earliest settlements in New England. He also spent many hours learning about local history.

Ron is survived by his wife of 49 years, JoAnn; his children: David Prince and his wife Judy of Westford; Bruce Prince and his wife Patty of Morrisville; Ronald Prince Jr. and his wife Sheryl of Milton; Reagan Prince of St. Albans; and Linda Prince of Studio City, Calif.; seven grandchildren: Melanie, Jessica, Samantha, Christina, Jennifer, Paul, and Randy; and four great-granddaughters: Aislynn, Kelsey, Alexis, and Kylie-Rose. He is also survived by his sister, Audrey and her husband, Larry DeGrechie, of Rouses Point, N.Y.; and by his half-brother, Louis Durivage of Sun City, Ariz.

Special thanks to Dr. Mark Greenblatt and the caring staff of the oncology unit of the Fletcher Allen Health Care and Hospice of the Champlain Valley.

Friends may visit the family at the Minor Funeral Home on Wednesday, July 13, from 2 to 4 and 7 to 9 p.m. Burial will be private.

REGINALD W. HUGHES I
ST. ALBANS / FAIRFIELD - Mr. Reginald W. Hughes I, age 78, died shortly after arrival at the Northwestern Medical Center, Sunday evening, July 10, 2005, following a brief illness. He was born in Bakersfield, Sept. 14, 1926, son of the late Arthur Hughest Sr. and Myrtle (White-Ladieux) Hughes.

Reg was a dairy farmer all of his working life, having been employed on the R.L. Vallee, Soule and Howrigan farms, retiring gin 1991. Reg enjoyed hunting, especially for bear, and spent many hours fishing and ice fishing.

On Oct. 4, 1947, he married Mary Terry. Mrs. Hughes died Oct. 10, 2003, following 56 years of wedded life together.

They are survived by eight children: Wayne Hughes of Grand Isle, Danny and his wife Marie Hughes of Swanton, Linda and her husband Donald Hallock of Leesburg, Fla., Christina Hughes of Bennington, Mary Theresa Hughes and her partner Pam Panuchitck of Rutland, Michael Hughes and his partner Teah Faniole of Chittenden, Reginald Hughes II of St. Albans, Wuanita and her husband Jacob Clogston of Swanton; 22 grandchildren; several great-grandchildren; sisters and brothers: Pearl Moll of Fairfield, Lawrence and his wife Yvette Hughes of Swanton, Mitchell and his wife Virginia Hughes of Fairfield, Phyllis and her husband Norman Hall of Burlington, Arthur Hughes Jr. and his wife Beverly Hughes of St. Albans, Shirley and her husband Paul Turner of Highgate, Ruth Labelle of Bakersfield; special friends, Dolly and Ronny Shappie of Grand Isle; several nieces, nephews and cousins. Besides his wife and parents, Reg was predeceased by his sisters, Frieda Chaplin, Ruby Broe and last week by Elizabeth Day; and by a son, Reginald Lee Hughes.

Funeral services will be held at the convenience of his family. There will be no public calling hours.

KENNETH (KENNY) H. JEROME
SHELDON - Kenneth (Kenny) H. Jerome, 33, died tragically on Thursday, July 7, 2005, at the Magnan Farm in East Sheldon. Kenny was born Aug. 28, 1971, in Burlington. The second born son of Clark and Lois (Hall) Jerome. He graduated from BFA Fairfax in 1990. He was a lifelong resident of this area.

He was employed by Whitings and Fairfax Salvage before his present job at the Terry and Joanne Magnan Farm in East Sheldon, where he had worked for over 10 years.

Kenny enjoyed snowmobiling and was a member of V. A. S. T. He also enjoyed four wheeling and collecting model John Deere tractors throughout his life.

Kenny had a special gift with children and in November of 2004 he was blessed with a beautiful daughter of his own. He was a loving and devoted daddy to his precious Kaitlin.

To know Kenny was to love him. His kind and generous manner was known by everyone who knew him. He was always there to help a friend in need, whether it be working on their car, or just lending them a hand in anyway he could.

He is survived by his parents, Clark and Lois (Hall) Jerome of Fletcher; his special friend and partner, Jennifer Miller of Sheldon, and their children Kaitlin Jerome, and McKayla and Perry. He is also survived by his brother, Clark, his wife Mary and their children Amber, Kylie, Michele, and Tiffany, all of Jericho; his grandfather, Francis Hall of Westford; his aunts and uncles, Beverly Hall, Bob and Alice Giroux, Raymond and Bonnie Hall, all of Westford, Jim and Claire Hall of Milton, Frank and Julie Hall of Fletcher, Ted and Martha Provost of Burlington, Norm and Sandy Ayer of St. George, and Steve and Linda Zeno of South Burlington; and his step grandmother, Joyce Jerome. Kenny also leaves his many cousins, all who loved him so much. Also a special little cousin, Mariah Michelle Nolan of Alburg, whom held a very special place in Kenny’s heart. Along with his many friends, a very special, Brian Lockerby.

He was predeceased by his grandmothers, Bertha Hall, and Louella Zeno. His grandfathers, Clarence Jerome, and Charlie Zeno. Also, his uncle, Hobart Jerome.

Kenny had a gentle spirit and a real love of life and he lived for his family and many friends. He touched the lives of many people in his short life. He will be sadly and so deeply missed by all who knew and loved him.

A funeral service will be held on Wednesday, July 13, 2005, at 11 a.m. in the Minor Funeral Home in Milton. Burial will follow in the Binghamville Cemetery in Fletcher.

Contributions in Kenny’s memory may be made to a trust fund established to benefit Kaitlin and McKayla in care of Dale Fisher, People’s Trust Company, P.O. Box 320, St. Albans, Vt. 05478.

WINIFRED “JOYCE” FIELDER
MORRISVILLE - Winifred “Joyce” (Rector) Fielder passed away on the evening of Thursday, July 7, 2005, at Genesis Elder Care in Morrisville. She was born in Elmira, N.Y. on June 30, 1926, and was adopted by the Reverend and Mrs. Milton Rector. She married Melvin F. Fielder in Littleton, N.H. on Sept. 20, 1947. Melvin passed away in 2000.

Joyce was active in the community as a member of the Puffer United Methodist Church of Morrisville, was a former member of the Second Congregational Church in Jeffersonville, and was a past officer in LaPlatte Grange in Shelburne. Joyce loved music and was an avid pianist, trombonist and soloist playing in church and conducting children’s choirs at the Methodist Church in Shelburne and the Baptist Church in Readsboro.

One of the greatest joys of Joyce’s life was reuniting with her biological siblings when she was 66 years old. On April 10, 1992, after locating her brother and sister, Joyce returned to Elmira, N.Y., where she met 50 of her relatives in person, including her brother Arthur Caywood and sister Mary Rice. She discovered that she also had a brother, James Caywood, who died in World War II at the age of 22 and another brother, Harold Morgan, who had also been adopted, and died in 1986.

Joyce was a loving wife, mother, grandmother, great-grandmother, sister and friend. She will be greatly missed by all who had the pleasure to know and love her.

She is survived by her children: Sheryl Merrey and husband Anthony of Goffstown, N.H., Duane Fielder and wife Gail of Utica, N.Y., Leona Burleson and companion Gerard LaPlume of Westfield, Marilyn Krudop of Sacramento, Calif., Carolyn Smith and husband Gordon of Johnson, Jan Van Raalte and husband Peter of Briarcliff Manor, N.Y., Beth Banka of Stowe; 19 grandchildren, three great-grandchildren; and several nieces and nephews, including her niece, Elizabeth, and her husband Stuart, her brother, Arthur Caywood and wife Montene of Wellsburg, N.Y., her sister, Mary Rice of Elmira Heights, N.Y., and her sister-in-law, Betty Morgan of Millport, N.Y. Joyce was predeceased by her brothers, Elwin Rector, Harold Morgan, James Caywood; and two sisters, Adonna DeGroat and Verna Kubin.

The family would like to thank all of the nurses and staff at Genesis who provided wonderful care to our mother for the past five years.

Visiting hours will be held today (July 11) from 6 to 9 p.m. in the A.W. Rich Funeral Home, Fairfax Chapel. Funeral services will be held at the Second Congregational Church of Jeffersonville at 11 a.m. on Tuesday, July 12, with the Reverend Peggy Tooker officiating. Interment will follow in the family lot in Maplewood Cemetery in Huntington.

HOLLIS L. GARROW
HIGHGATE CENTER - Hollis L. Garrow, 77, a longtime area resident, passed away on Friday, July 8, 2005, shortly after arrival at the Northwestern Medical Center. He was born in Milton, Vt. on May 9, 1928, the son of the late William and Marion (Robinson) Garrow.

Hollis served his country in the United States Army during the Korean Conflict. He was employed in Connecticut for 16 years for the Stanley Works Corporation, then moved back to Vermont where he worked for several years for the Swanton Foundry and then retired in 1992 from the Maintenance Department at the Northwest Correctional Facility in St. Albans. He was a member of the American Legion Post 95 of Norfolk, N.Y.

Survivors include his wife of 47 years, Joyce (Drean) Garrow of Highgate Center; three sons: Kenneth Murray and Craig Garrow, both of Swanton, and Brett Garrow and his wife, Rebecca of Plainville, Conn.; two daughters: Terri Krystofalski of Chateaugay, N.Y. and Valerie Dewey of Highgate Center; a brother, Howard Garrow of Rutland; a son-in-law, Kenneth Michaud Sr. of Bristol, Conn.; seven grandchildren: Kenneth Michaud Jr. and his wife, Kris, Kasey Michaud and his wife, Kate, Nicole Krystofalski and Danny Nadeau, Jason Krystofalski, Joshua Garrow, Brittany Garrow and Trevor Garrow; four great-grandchildren: Samantha Potter, Tyler Michaud, Skylar Michaud and Gavin Nadeau; and many nieces and nephews. In addition to his parents, Hollis was predeceased by two daughters, Veronica Garrow on June 13, 1981, and Sherry Michaud on June 3, 2005; his four sisters: Katherine, Ethel, Lois and Irene; and his three brothers, Stanley, Bernard "Jim, " and David.

A funeral service will be held on Wednesday, July 13, 2005, at 11 a.m. in the Heald Funeral Chapel, 87 South Main St., St. Albans, with the Reverend Herman Benjamin, Pastor of St. Paul's United Methodist Church officiating. Interment with full military honors will follow in the family lot in Maple Grove Cemetery in Bakersfield. Hollis' family will receive friends on Tuesday from 2 to 4 and 7 to 9 p.m. at the funeral home.

Those planning an expression of sympathy are asked to consider the Hospice Program of the Franklin County Home Health Agency, 3 Home Health Circle, St. Albans, Vt. 05478, or the Vermont Center for Cancer Medicine, 792 College Parkway, Colchester, Vt. 05446.
