KENNETH GEORGE BALDWIN
Swanton

Mr. Kenneth George Baldwin, age 82 years, a resident of this area since 1956, died early Thursday afternoon, April 24, 2008, at the Haven Health Care Center in St. Albans Town.

Born in Attleboro, Mass. on April 15, 1926, he was the son of the late George and Annie (Pilling) Baldwin. He attended Massachusetts schools and on Nov. 8, 1947, was married to the former Ruth Stafford, who predeceased him on Oct. 25, 1999. He was employed for many years and retired from the United States Border Protection Service.

Ken faithfully served his country in the United States Navy during World War II and was a life member of the Veterans of Foreign Wars, Robert Glidden Post 758, in St. Albans. Over the years he had been active in Swanton’s Seventy-Six Lodge 14, F&A.M., was an honorary member of Masonic Lodge 166 of Williamstown, N.J., and a member of the Savard of Bunker Hill. He enjoyed hunting, fishing and photography, having photographed every covered bridge throughout the State of Vermont.

Ken leaves two daughters and their husbands, Pamela and James Petrini of Vineland, N.J. and Priscilla and Gary Taylor of West Swanton; five grandchildren: Karl Taylor and his wife, Heidi, Kristy Taylor and her fiancé, Jason Benjamin, Andrea Petrini and Leah Petrini and fiancé Michael Stavoli; two great-grandchildren, Dalton and Kassidy Benjamin; one niece and two nephews.

Besides his wife and parents, he was predeceased by a daughter, Patricia Baldwin in 1993; and most recently by a grandson, Kevin Kenneth Taylor, on April 15, 2008.

At the request of the family, Funeral Services and Interment will be private and at their convenience.

In lieu of flowers it is suggested that gifts in Ken’s memory be made to the Shriners Hospital for Crippled Children, 1420-3400 De Maisonneuve Blvd. W, Montreal, Quebec Canada H3Z9Z9; Missisquoi Valley Rescue, P.O. Box 22, Swanton 05488; or to the Franklin County Home Health Agency, 3 Home Health Circle, St. Albans 05478.

Arrangements have been under the direction of The Kidder Memorial Home, 89 Grand Ave., Swanton 05488 (868-3331).

ARTHUR (ART) R. KIMBELL
Brownsville, Vt.

Arthur (Art) R. Kimbell of Brownsville, Vt., devoted husband, father, sportsman, World War II veteran and intellect, died on April 24th at Dartmouth Hitchcock Medical Center, in the company of his wife and three of his eight children. He was 83.

Graveside services are open to the public and will be held Saturday, May 3, at 1 p.m. in Brownsville, Vt. In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions can be made to Vermont Institute of Natural Science, P.O. Box 1281, Quechee, Vt. 05059.

He was born Dec. 31, 1924 in Chicago, Ill., to Arthur W. Kimbell and Alice Raymer, the youngest of four children. They moved to Boston, Mass. in 1929.

Art graduated from Browne & Nichols Prep School in Cambridge, Mass. in 1942 and entered Cornell University. He joined the U.S. Army in June 1944 and was assigned to the Manhattan Project in Los Alamos, NM. Sergeant Kimbell was honorably discharged in 1946, returned to Cornell and graduated in Mechanical Engineering in 1947. He immediately went to work for United Carr Fastener in Cambridge, Mass., where over 20 years, he witnessed the birth of the semi-conductor industry.

It was on a business trip to Detroit, Mich. that Art met his wife, Mona L. Jacob of Gross Pointe. Their 59-year love affair ended only with Art’s passing.

They started their family in Norwell, Mass. and moved to Newton, Mass. in 1954. In 1968, Art moved the family of eight children to St. Albans, Vt., where he joined Phillips Metallurgical in Swanton as President. They spent 10 great years in St. Albans. Art was very active with the board of Kerb’s Hospital, Associated Industries of Vermont, the Rotary Club, the Hard’ack Ski Club, other civic organizations, and in his children’s pursuit of alpine skiing. He worked on the gubernatorial campaigns of Luther “Fred” Hackett and Richard Snelling, and always had an opinion on Vermont politics.

Art was a partner in Touraid Travel in St. Albans for four years and in 1978 took a position with Windsor Minerals, a division of Johnson & Johnson in West Windsor, Vt. He and Mona lived in Brownsville for 29 years, where he served as Justice of the Peace and on the Act 250 District 2 Environmental Commission.

Kimbell was an avid outdoorsman. He fished anywhere and any time, including during his honeymoon. Squam Lake in New Hampshire was a very special place to him and it was there in the White Mountains that he passed on his passion for the outdoors to his children and grandchildren. He loved reading, birdwatching, backgammon, crossword puzzles and people. He particularly enjoyed time with his children as they moved through life.

Art is survived by his wife, Mona Kimbell, residing at Wheelock Terrace in Hanover, N.H.; and by all eight of his children: Arthur “Duke” Kimbell of Fort Myers, Fla., Abigail R. Kimbell of Alexandria, Va., Alice Domey of Bradenton, Fla., Andrew S. Kimbell of Raleigh, N.C., Martin N. Kimbell of Campton, N.H., Daniel J. Kimbell of St. Johnsbury, Vt., Mona “Noni” Kimbell of Australia, and Charles A. Kimbell of Woodstock, Vt. From the large family are 14 grandchildren and six great-grandchildren.

MADELINE MAE ‘MAGGIE’ SALAMON
MILTON

Madeline Mae “Maggie” Salamon, 66, died Sunday, April 27, 2008, at the Fletcher Allen Health Care in Burlington.

Maggie was born in St. Albans on Oct. 28, 1941, the daughter of Charles and Doris (Linscott) Bullock.

She graduated from Milton High School and had worked for several years at St. Michael’s College.

Maggie enjoyed yard sales and spending Saturdays and Sundays riding the backcountry roads with her sisters.

She is survived by her sister, Lillian Baxter, whom she lived; sister, Beverly Littlefield of Milton; and her brother, David Bullock and his wife, Linda of Largo, Fla. She is also survived by many nieces, nephews; and her cat Boo-Boo.

A Funeral Service will be held on Wednesday, April 30, at 11 a.m. in the Minor Funeral Home in Milton. Burial will follow in the Milton Village cemetery.

Memorial contributions in Maggie’s name may be made to your favorite Humane Society.

Visiting hours will be held on Tuesday from 6 to 8 p.m. in the Minor Funeral Home in Milton.

FARRINGTON FISHER POST
St. Albans

Farrington Fisher Post (Babe) passed away in his home on May 21, 2008, after a long illness. Babe was born in St. Albans on May 18, 1925, the son of the late Farrington D. Post and Ruth Fisher Post. He graduated from B.F.A. in 1943 and the University of Vermont in 1950.

During World War II and the Korean Conflict, he served in the Army, achieving the rank of 1st lieutenant. On Sept. 5, 1949, he married Beverly Hall and they enjoyed 59 years together. For 34 years he was employed at General Electric in the Finance Department. Upon retirement, Bev and Babe happily spent 24 winters in Fort Myers, Fla.

He is survived by his wife; his daughter, Betsy and Rod Hayden of St. Albans and their children, Kyle and Rebecca Hayden and Dr. Brian and Jeanne Irwin; his son, William and Linda Post of Burlington and their children, Christy and Eleazer Durfee, William Post II and Katharine Post; his daughter, Barbara and Paul Crandell of Queensbury, N.Y. and their children, Tara and Rob Bogucki, Melissa Crandell and Lindsey Crandell. He was blessed with four great-grandchildren: Fisher Irwin, Ruby Durfee, Jack Hayden and Gwenyth Irwin. He also leaves cousins, Robert Fisher of Burlington, and Anne Fisher of St. Albans; brothers-in-law, Robert and Frances Hall of Shelburne, and Bill and Ann Hall of Williston; and many wonderful nieces and nephews.

A memorial service was held Saturday, May 24, at 2 p.m. at All Saints Episcopal Church, Spear Street, South Burlington.

In lieu of flowers, contributions in his memory may be sent to All Saints Church. Inurnment will be at the Georgia Plains cemetery at a later date.

EUNICE M. (FORTUNE) CROSS
Georgia

Eunice Mae (Fortune) Cross, 68, passed away on Monday, May 26, 2008, at her daughter’s home in Alburgh, surrounded by her loving family. Eunice was born in Alburgh on Dec. 1, 1939, daughter of the late Peter and Elva (Bohannon) Fortune.

She had worked with housekeeping at Fletcher Allen and Northwestern Medical Center for numerous years. She married Raymond Cross Sr. on Dec. 26, 1959, whom predeceased her in 1996. Eunice enjoyed crocheting and lovingly knitting items and wood working for her family and friends. She had been an active member with the VFW Ladies Auxiliary 758. She was also a member of the Royal Order of the Moose. She will be greatly missed by all those who knew and loved her.

She is survived by her daughter, Nancy Paquette and husband, Douglas, of Alburgh; her three sons: Raymond Cross Jr. of Georgia, Peter Cross and wife, Elizabeth, of Williston, Charles “Chuk” Cross of Georgia; her adopted son, Bryan Deyette, of Fairfield; two brothers, Fred Fortune of St. Albans Town, James Maskell and wife, Sherry, of Glens Falls, N.Y.; two sisters, Mildred Stevenson and Lynn of Clarenceville, Quebec, Mariette Curfman of Ada, Neb.; nine grandchildren; three great-grandchildren; and several aunts, uncles, cousins, nieces and nephews. She was also predeceased by her son, Robert Cross, in 1964; and two brothers, Carl and Wyman Maskell.

Visiting hours will be held today, May 29, 2008, from 6 to 8 p.m. at A. W. Rich Funeral Home - Fairfax Chapel. A graveside service in the Sanderson Corners cemetery, Fairfax, will be held on Friday, May 30, 2008, at 12 p.m. with the Reverend Elizabeth Griffin officiating.

Memorial contributions in Eunice’s name can be made to either the Visiting Nurse Association Home Care or Hospice Program, 1110 Prim Road, Suite #1, Colchester, Vt. 05446; or to the American Cancer Society, 121 Connor Way, P.O. Box 1460, Williston, Vt. 05495-1460.

ERIKA H. BAYER
Isle La Motte

Erika H. Bayer, 93, of Isle La Motte, Vt., died Jan. 25, 2008, at Northwestern Medical Center in St. Albans.

Mrs. Bayer was born on Aug. 23, 1914, in Maplewood, N.J., the daughter of Robert C. and Erika (Hachmeister) Clark. Her parents predeceased her. She married Emil Bayer, who predeceased her Dec. 13, 1981.

She enjoyed reading, playing cards, bird watching, gardening, and the flowers around her home, and swimming across Lake Champlain in her younger years. She loved animals, especially her last two: her dog, Sophie (Shadow) and her cat, Greylocks. Some of her most enjoyable times were living independently at her Isle La Motte lighthouse home. She was proud to have helped her nephew, Robbie, clean the windows of the lantern room in preparation for the Oct. 5, 2002 re-lighting.

She is survived by one brother, Lockwood L. Clark and his wife, Claire C. Clark, of Champlain, N.Y.; a nephew, Lockwood “Robbie” Clark of Champlain; three stepchildren: Larry Bayer and his wife, Beatrice, Ruth Elliott and her husband, Harry, and Sally Newcombe, all of Connecticut. She is also survived by cousins.

A funeral service will be held on Saturday, May 31, at 2 p.m. at Christ and St. John’s Episcopal Church on Butternut Street in Champlain, N.Y. Burial will follow at Glenwood cemetery on Oak Street in Champlain.

Arrangements are with M.B. Clark, Inc. Funeral Home in Champlain, N.Y.

MR. WILLIAM JAMES ALLEN
Bedford, QC

Mr. William James Allen died Wednesday, May 21, 2008, at the age of 88 at the Bedford CHSLD. He was born March 16, 1920, in Montreal, son of John and Ethel (Rawling) Allen.

Mr. Allen was a World War II Veteran serving six years overseas with the Canadian Air Force. He met and married Ruth Elizabeth Weeks, Oct. 2, 1943, in Radstock, Bath, England. They lived and worked in Montreal until he retired in 1986 and moved to Bedford, Qc.

Survivors include his loving daughter, Patricia D. Cooper and husband, Donald, of Franklin, Vt.; two grandchildren, Mary E. Cooper of St. Johnsbury, Vt., Christopher W. Cooper (Kimberly) of Websterville, Vt., they were his pride and joy.

He was predeceased by his wife, Ruth Elizabeth, of 54 years; a brother and sister.

Arrangements entrusted to Joseph Dion & Fils funeral home, 215 rue rivière, Bedford, Qc (450-248-2911 / josephdionfilsltee@bellnet.ca).

A graveside service was held at the Bedford Protestant cemetery, Thursday, May 29, 2008, at 2 p.m.

WENDELL LAWRENCE CHERRIER
Windsor, Vt.

Wendell Lawrence Cherrier, 75, passed away Wednesday, May 28, 2008, at the Mt. Ascutney Hospital & Health Center in Windsor.

He was born Feb. 20, 1933, in Fairfax, Vt., son of Lawrence A. and Lorena M. (Bennett) Cherrier.

He attended school in Windsor. He served in the U.S. Army during the Korean War. He married Nancy Chickering on July 2, 1960, in Brattleboro, and they were later divorced.

Mr. Cherrier was employed as a LPN at the Mary Hitchcock Memorial Hospital in Hanover, N.H. for 10 years, and later at the Dartmouth College Infirmary for 35 years before retiring in 2003.

He enjoyed gardening and vacationing at the ocean. He loved his horse and dogs. His partner, Steven Nott, predeceased him in 1990.

Surviving family members include two sons: David Cherrier of Fountain Inn, S.C., and Dale Cherrier of Greenville, N.C.; one brother, Wayne Cherrier of East Topsham, Maine; two sisters: Doris Wareham of Cove, Ore., and Aldean Murphy of Exeland, Wis.; six grandchildren; and several nieces, nephews, and cousins.

Funeral services will be held today, May 30, 2008, at 7 p.m. at the Knight Funeral Home in Windsor, with Reverend Ken White officiating. Interment will be in the Hillside cemetery in Norwich, Vt., on Saturday at 2 p.m.

In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be made to the Upper Valley Humane Society, 300 Old Route 10, Enfield, N.H. 03748.
