Veronica A. Romano

Veronica A. Romano, 90, of Rutland, died Dec. 19, 2002, at Berkshire Medical Center in Pittsfield, Mass.

She was born Dec. 2, 1912, in Chittenden, the daughter of Charles and Anna (Carter) Greeno.

She attended local schools and graduated from Castleton State Teacher’s College in Castleton in 1934.

She taught school in a one room schoolhouse in Goshen, grades 1 to 8, in the 1930s and later worked for Miss Muffy Carmody’s Dancing Studio.

Mrs. Romano was a member of St. Peter’s Church and the Sodality of the Most Holy Rosary.

She enjoyed playing cards and was an avid reader.

Survivors include three sons, the Rev. Joseph Romano of Springfield, Charles Romano and Stephen Romano, both of Pittsfield, Mass.; four grandchildren, seven great-grandchildren and two great-great-grandchildren.

She was predeceased by her husband, Joseph Romano, in 1995.

The funeral Mass will be celebrated Saturday at 10 a.m. at St. Peter’s Church in Rutland. A private burial will take place in Calvary cemetery.

Friends may call Friday from 4 to 6 p.m. at the Clifford Funeral Home in Rutland.

Memorial contributions may be made to Holy Family School, Pleasant Street, Springfield, 05156.

Arrangements are under the direction of the Clifford Funeral Home.

John J. Scanlon

TROY, N.Y. — John J. Scanlon, 82, died Dec. 19, 2002, at Rosewood Gardens in East Greenbush.

He was born Oct. 29, 1920, in Rutland, Vt., the son of Francis and Jane (Fallon) Scanlon.

He graduated from Mount St. Joseph Academy.

He worked as a reporter for the Rutland Herald and the Plattsburgh Press Republican and copy editor, and later for the Troy Record for more than 46 years. He was lately a columnist at the Troy Record. He had also written for the Southern Germany Edition of Stars and Stripes.

Mr. Scanlon served in the 1056th Infantry during World War II, with the 240th Coast Artillery, 630th Tank Destroyer Battalion and 771st Tank Battalion.

He was a member of the Troy Knights of Columbus and a communicant of St. Peter’s Church in Troy.

Survivors include three sons, Frank Scanlon of Latham, Thomas Scanlon of Hampstead, N.H., and John Scanlon of Stillwater Reservoir; three sisters, Catherine Grace and Loretta Scanlon, both of Center Rutland, Vt., and Anne Scanlon of White River Junction, Vt.; and five grandchildren.

The funeral service will be held Monday at 9 a.m. at the Bryce Funeral Home Inc. in Troy and continue at St. Anthony’s Shrine Church in Troy at 9:30 a.m. with a Mass. Burial will follow in St. Mary’s cemetery in Troy.

Friends may call Saturday from 5 to 8 p.m. and Sunday from 1 to 4 p.m. at the funeral home.

Memorial contributions in lieu of flowers may be made to the John Scanlon Scholarship, in care of Mount St. Joseph Academy, 127 Convent Avenue, Rutland, Vt., 05701, or Clothe-A-Child, in care of The Record, 501 Broadway, Troy, 12180.

Arrangements are under the direction of the Bryce Funeral Home Inc. in Troy.

Shari Sperry

CORNWALL — Shari Sperry, 44, died Dec. 19, 2002, in Cornwall as a result of the automobile accident.

Funeral arrangements are pending at the Sanderson Funeral Home in Middlebury.

Haskins Infant

CORNWALL — Brianna Haskins, 21 months, died Dec. 19, 2002, in Cornwall as the result of an automobile accident.

Funeral arrangements are pending at the Sanderson Funeral Home in Middlebury.

Steven Warner

MIDDLEBURY — Steven Warner, 40, died Dec. 19, 2002, in Cornwall as the result of an automobile accident.

A memorial service will be held Sunday at 1 p.m. at the Cornwall Congregational Church.

Arrangements are under the direction of the Sanderson Funeral Home in Middlebury.

Beverly Boise

MIDDLEBURY — Beverly Boise, 66, died Dec. 18, 2002, at the home of her daughter in Orwell.

She was born Jan. 2, 1936, in Cornwall, the daughter of Frederick and Hazel (Benson) Boise.

She graduated from Middlebury High School and Becker Junior College.

She taught at Hinesburg High School and later worked at several other jobs. She most recently worked at Addison County Community Action in Middlebury.

She enjoyed helping others, crafts and reading.

Survivors include a daughter, Marie Orr of Orwell; a son, D. Richard Boise of Lynn, Mass.; and “adopted” son, Leo Bruso Jr. of Lynn, Mass.; three grandchildren; a brother, Richard Boise of Houston, Texas; a sister, Patricia Paquin of Westminster, Md.; and several nieces and nephews.

She was predeceased by a son, Daniel Dederick; two sisters, Doris Boise and Katherine Lyles; and two step brothers, Francis and Frederick Boise.

There will be no calling hours or memorial service. A private graveside service will be held at a later date.

Memorial contributions may be made to Addison County Home Health and Hospice, P.O. Box 754, Middlebury, or Addison County Community Action, 282 Boardman St., Middlebury.

Arrangements are under the direction of the Sanderson Funeral Service in Middlebury.

Teresa V. Nantel Rites

ORWELL — The funeral Mass for Teresa Velna Nantel, 74, who died Dec. 16, 2002, was celebrated Thursday at St. Paul’s Catholic Church in Orwell with the Rev. Charles Danielson officiating.

A private burial will follow in Mountain View cemetery in Orwell.

Organist and soloist was Stu James.

Pallbearers were Ed Barnes, Bill Orr, Louis Hall, Joe Fernandez, Paul Plouffe and Brian Sampson.

The family received friends at the home of her son, Eugene, in Poultney for a time of fellowship and reflection following the committal service.

Arrangements were under the direction of the Mallory Funeral Home in Fair Haven.

Russell Infant

BROOKFIELD — William Craig Russell, infant son of Craig and Angela (Blodgett) Russell, died on Dec. 18, 2002, at home.

He was born Nov. 22, 2002, in Berlin.

Survivors include his mother and father of Brookfield; a brother, Alexander Russell of Brookfield; his paternal grandparents, Charles and Sandra Russell of Randolph Center; maternal grandparents, Wayne and Christie Blodgett of Brookfield; paternal great-grandparents, Donald and Sylvia Nolan of Underhill; maternal great-grandmother, Fleda Stone of Braintree; seven uncles and two aunts; and a cousin.

The funeral service will be held Sunday at 2 p.m. at the Green Mountain Gospel Chapel in Randolph with the Rev. Ronald Rilling officiating. Burial will take place at a later date.

There will be no calling hours.

Memorial contributions may be made to the March of Dimes, P.O. Box 605, Barre, 05641.

Arrangements are under the direction of the Day Funeral Home in Randolph.

Ward H. Paronto Sr.

WHITE RIVER JUNCTION — Ward H. Paronto Sr., 77, died Dec. 18, 2002, at Brookside Nursing Home in White River Junction.

He was born March 24, 1925, in Eden, the son of Howard and Alice (Brown) Paronto.

He attended schools in Eden and Quechee.

He married Marilyn Kenison on April 27, 1946, in Norwich. She died in 1999.

Mr. Paronto worked at Dewey’s Woolen Mill for many years, repairing carding machines and later as a supervisor. He also worked at several other mills until they closed, and later worked in the maintenance department at Dartmouth College, retiring in 1987. He enjoyed hunting, fishing and his vegetable garden. He was also an avid reader and enjoyed politics.

Survivors include two sons, Ward Paronto Jr. of Fairlee and Eric Paronto of White River Junction; a daughter, Nadine Hodgdon of West Hartford; eight grandchildren and five great-grandchildren; a sister, Arta Grambling of Woodstock; a brother, Jack Paronto of White River Junction; and several nieces and nephews.

He was predeceased by a brother, Frank Paronto, in 1955.

Friends may call Saturday from 2 to 4 p.m. at the Knight Funeral Home in White River Junction. The funeral service will follow at 4 p.m. at the funeral home. Burial will take place at a later date in West Hartford cemetery.

Memorial contributions in lieu of flowers may be made to the Brookside Nursing Home, Activity Fund, 120 Christian St., White River Junction, 05001, or Visiting Nurses Alliance of Vermont and New Hampshire, 20 S. Main St., White River Junction, 05001.

Arrangements are under the direction of the Knight Funeral Home in White River Junction.

Jules Xavier Junker

LONDONDERRY — Jules Xavier Junker III, age 85, died peacefully at his home in Londonderry, Vermont, on Tuesday night, December 17, 2002.

Born in Philadelphia on August 1, 1917, Colonel Junker attended University of Pennsylvania and Syracuse University. He entered Military Service in June 1941 and was commissioned a Second Lieutenant in the U.S. Army Air Corps 1 April 1942.

Junker flew bombers against Japan and Germany in World War II, and against North Korea during the Korean War and commanded support operations for transport and refueling aircraft during the War in Viet Nam.

Some of his most interesting assignments other than combat were: Commander In Chief Pacific Staff, the joint Army, Navy, Air Force Command in Hawaii; Commander Myrtle Beach Air Force Base, Myrtle Beach, South Carolina, Commander Ching Chaun Kang Air Base Taichung. Taiwan, a Joint U.S. and Chinese Nationalist Air Force Operation and Commander Ramstein Air Base, Germany, at that time the largest United States Air Force Base outside the U.S.

Col. Junker was a Command Pilot and Bombardier and was awarded Chinese Air Force Pilot Wings in 1967. His decorations include Legion of Merit, Distinguished Flying Cross with Oak Leaf Cluster, Bronze Star Medal, Air Medal with Seven Oak Leaf Clusters, Air Force Commendation Medal with Oak Leaf Cluster, Distinguished Unit Citation, American Defense Medal, Far East Service Medal, European Middle East Service Medal, National Defense Medal, Korean Service Medal, and United Nations Korean Service Medal.

Retiring from the Air Force in 1971, the Junker family returned to their home in Hampton, Va., where he engaged in real estate and general contracting business. The family moved to Londonderry, Vt., in 1973. He made a business of his hobby of restoring antiques and became active in town affairs. He was one of the Town Listers until 1989 and was also the Town Grand Juror, a Trustee Memorial Park, Chairman Londonderry Green Up and Treasurer of Flood Brook School Board, and more recently Town Zoning Administrator and a Trustee of Public Funds.

He is survived by his wife, Nancy Bigelow Junker; his daughters, Susan Morrill of Colorado, Aimee Junker of Nepal, Casey Junker Bailey of Londonderry, Vermont; and his two sons, Jules X. Junker IV of Johnson, Vermont and Payne Junker of Chester, Vermont.

A memorial service will be held at Saint Joseph’s Chapel in Londonderry, Vermont on Sunday, December 22, 2002, at 2 p.m. Mr. Junker’s cremated remains will be committed to the earth in the Windham cemetery.
