ROBERT RICHARD STURGEON

MILTON/FAIRFAX -- Robert Richard Sturgeon, age 74 of Fairfax, formerly of Milton, passed away Sunday, Feb. 17, 2002, at Fletcher Allen Health Care in Burlington with his loving family by his side. He was born in Charlotte on Oct. 12, 1927, son of the late Frank L. and Edith (Poirier) Sturgeon. He was a cook at St. Michael's College in Colchester for more than 20 years.

He is survived by his wife, Elizabeth (Peters) Sturgeon of Fairfax; a son, Michael Sturgeon and his wife Linda of Franklin; two daughters, Sharon Maskell of Georgia, and Patricia Stone and her husband Larry of Florida.; four sisters, Rena Dragon of Burlington, Anna Place of Burlington, Laura Bora of Brandon, and Doris Yandow and her husband Raymond of Essex Jct.; six grandchildren, Shawn Sturgeon and his wife Mary, April Stone, Stacey Demore, Curtis Demore, David Sturgeon, Melissa Sturgeon; and several nieces, nephews, and cousins.

He was predeceased by two brothers, George and Walter Sturgeon; two sisters, Katherine Fahey and Helen Palmer.

There will be no visiting hours. Funeral services will be private and at the convenience of the family. Arrangements are by the Hayes-Rich Funeral Home, 1176 Main St., Fairfax.

LYNDON E. SHELDON

MILTON -- Lyndon E. Sheldon, 79, died Sunday, Feb. 17, 2002, at the Fletcher Allen Health Care in Burlington.

Lyndon was born in Milton on July 29, 1922, the son of Willie and Ruth (Scofield) Sheldon.

He was a U.S. Army Veteran, serving during World War II, where he received the Purple Heart.

On Dec. 29, 1945, he was married to Lorraine Bittner. Lorraine passed away on Jan. 25, 2000.

A lifelong Milton resident, Lyndon was a member of the American Legion Post #57, the VFW, the Seneca Lodge #40 F & AM and was very active with the Milton Grange, holding all of the positions of office within the Grange in Milton.

Lyndon was employed on the Pidgeon Farm and area farms in his earlier years. He then went to work for J.W. Ryans for 30 years, for Blodgetts Oven Co. for 4-5 years, and for the Milton Schools for 17 years before retiring.

Lyndon is survived by his sister Bertha Stuart and her husband John of Milton; by a brother Rudy Sheldon and his wife Freida of Unionville, Conn.; by his brothers-in-law Peter Senna of Williston, Gerald Smith of Milton, Cecil Bittner of West Va.; and his sisters-in-law Catherine Barnett and her husband George of Mississippi, and Dorothy Bailey and her husband Leonard of St. Albans. He is also survived by several nieces, nephews and cousins.

In addition to his wife Lorraine, Lyndon was predeceased by his son Edward in March of 1968 while serving in the Vietnam War, and by his sisters Emily Senna, Florence Murray, and Caroline Smith.

A funeral service will be held Wednesday, Feb. 20, 2002 at 10 a.m. in the United Church in Milton with the Rev. Jeffrey Cornwell officiating. Memorials in Lyndon's memory may be made to the American Legion, c/o Stan Henry, 13 Watkins Rd., Colchester, Vt. 05446. Burial will be in the Milton Village Cemetery in the spring. Visiting hours will be held Tuesday, Feb. 19, from 2-4 and 7-9 p.m. in the Minor Funeral Home, located at 237 Rt. 7 South in Milton.

REVEREND DR. J. LAWRENCE OUIMET

COVENTRY, Conn./SWANTON -- The Reverend Dr. J. Lawrence Ouimet died Saturday at his residence in Coventry, Conn. where he was the associate pastor of St. Mary's Church.

Father Larry, as he was popularly known, was born in St. Albans, on Sept. 1, 1947, the son of Yvette Begnoche Ouimet of Swanton, Vt. and the late John C. Ouimet.

He graduated from St. Michael's College in Winooski, received his Master of Divinity Degree from St. Michael's College in Toronto, Canada and his doctorate in Pastoral ministry from St. Mary's Seminary University in Baltimore, Md.

He was ordained in the priesthood in 1974, and served two years in Vermont area parishes. He came to Connecticut and was the assistant pastor at Sacred Heart Church in Groton for 11 years. He was incardinated as a priest of the Norwich Diocese in 1988. He then served at various churches in the Norwich Diocese including Sacred Heart in Norwichtown and St. Mary's Church in Coventry. He was instructor advocate of the Norwich Diocesan Tribunal and served as a judge of the court of appeals of the Province of Hartford.

While at Sacred Heart Church in Groton Father Larry was invited to become the Chaplain of the Pioneer Hose Company in the City of Groton and then the Chaplain for the entire Fire Department. He became a trained volunteer fire fighter and attended the State of Connecticut Fire School in Willimantic. He was then added to the call list for the city and was present at most fire calls.

He was then asked to serve as Chaplain of the Poquonnock Bridge Fire Dept in Groton, and B. F. Hoxie Engine Company in Mystic. He also was named the chaplain for the New London County Fire Chiefs Association and the Connecticut Fire Chiefs Association. Father Larry was named the first chaplain of the Groton Town Police Department. He was associated with the International Conference of Police Chaplains. He was named chaplain of the City of Norwich Fire Department and also the Yantic Fire Engine Company.

He was a member of the Groton Lodge of Elks, the Seaside Council #7 of the Knights of Columbus and Alahar Caravan #37 of Alhambra.

He is survived by his mother, Yvette T. ( Begnoche ) Ouimet of Swanton; his brother, John C. Ouimet Jr. of Memphis, N.Y.; and his fiancee Cathy. His two sisters Patricia A. Routhier of Swanton, and Janet E. Lucas of Swanton, and her husband Michael G. Lucas. He leaves three nieces and six nephews, Vicki M. Kitts, Melissa C. Depuydt, Laurie A. Ouimet, Todd M. Ouimet, Michael Ouimet, J.P. Routhier II, Eric C. Routhier, Patrick Routhier, and Jeremy M. Lucas.

'Father Larry' will be remembered for his love of faith, his love of life, and his dedication to people. So many lives were touched through his ministry; his kindness and compassion for others was limitless. Larry sought to enrich the lives of everyone he met. He took great pleasure in helping the disadvantaged, bringing hope, compassion, and humor to all he encountered. He will be truly missed in our hearts.

Fr. Larry: God has some soft cookies and milk waiting for you.

A Mass of Christian Burial will be held on Wednesday morning at 10 o'clock at the Cathedral of St. Patrick, Broadway, Norwich. Interment will be in St. Mary's Cemetery, in Swanton. Father Ouimet will lie in state on Tuesday from 2 to 4 and 6 to 8 o'clock at the Cathedral. Byles-Groton Memorial Home, 310 Thames St. is in charge of arrangements. A Mass of Christian Burial will also be held on Saturday at 11 o'clock at the Church of the Nativity of the Blessed Virgin Mary, Swanton. Father Ouimet will lie in state there on Friday from 2 to 4 and 7 to 9 p.m.

Father Larry requested that there be no flowers and that donations should be made to the American Heart Association, 5 Brookside Dr., Wallingford, Conn., 06492 or to ones own parish for Masses. Vermont arrangements are under the direction of the Kidder Memorial Home, 89 Grand Avenue, Swanton.

HAZEL KATHERINE JARVIS

ISLE LaMOTTE -- Mrs. Hazel Katherine Jarvis, 93, a longtime resident of the Isle La Motte community died Saturday evening, Feb. 16, 2002, in The Brownway Residence in Enosburg Falls.

She was born in Alburg, March 20, 1908, the daughter of the late Henry and Miranda (Mumley) Mitchell, She attended schools in Alburg and on, June 27, 1932, was married to Paul Jarvis who predeceased her in 1983.

An active member of the Isle La Motte community Mrs. Jarvis was a member of the Isle La Motte Volunteer Fire Department Ladies Auxiliary and was also a longtime member of the Isle La Motte Historical Society. She was a devoted parishioner of St. Joseph's Roman Catholic Mission and belonged to the Ladies of St. Anne.

Mrs. Jarvis leaves her daughter and son-in-law, Joan and Larry Greene of Isle La Motte and Ocala, Fla. and their children, Craig, Timothy and Kenneth Greene and Karen Bourgeois; two sons and daughters-in-law, Vincent and Jacquelin Jarvis of Isle La Motte and their children Lee, Anthony and Gene Jarvis and Julie Irick and Gary and Martha Jarvis of Ocala, Fla. and their children Brian, Richard and Jennifer Jarvis; and Mrs. Jarvis' daughter-in-law Laura Jarvis of St. Albans and her children Calvin Jarvis, Norma Miller, Brenda Gilbert and Gail Elvidge. Also surviving are 15 great grandchildren and several nieces and nephews.

In addition to her husband, Mrs. Jarvis was predeceased by her son Robert in 1965; by a grandson, Neil Jarvis; and by three brothers and four sisters.

The Jarvis family would like to express their deepest gratitude to all the Brownway Residence staff in Enosburg Falls for the dedicated, kind and loving care they gave Mrs. Jarvis during the three years she made her home with them.

A Mass of Christian Burial will be celebrated Thursday, Feb. 21, 2002, at 11 a.m. from St. Joseph's Roman Catholic Mission, Main Street, Isle La Motte. The pastor, Father Maurice U. Boucher, SSE will be the celebrant and homilist. Interment will follow in the Jarvis family lot in St. Joseph's Cemetery. Friends may call at the Kidder Memorial Home, 89 Grand Ave., Swanton on Wednesday, Feb. 20, from 7-9 p.m. Gifts in Mrs. Jarvis memory may be made to St. Joseph's Roman Catholic Mission, Main Street, Isle La Motte, 05463.

ELIZABETH 'BETTY' (COURVILLE) LeBLANC

ST. ALBANS -- Elizabeth 'Betty' Courville, 80, a native of St. Albans, died early Saturday morning, Feb. 16, 2002, in the Holiday House Nursing and Rehabilitation Facility in St. Albans Town.

She was born in St. Albans, Sept. 1, 1921, the daughter of the late Oscar and Charlotte (Wry) Courville. She attended schools in St. Albans as well as in Phillipsburg, Que., Canada.

Betty will best be remembered for her association of more than 30 years with Father Jean Paul Laplante, serving in St. Cecelia Parish in Washington, St. Frances Cabrini Parish in East Barre, St. Louis Parish in Highgate Center and St. Thomas Parish in Underhill Center. While working in those parishes she was involved in many different parish functions and organizations.

Betty leaves her daughter, Linda R. Martin of Swanton; and her brother, Raymond Courville and his wife Betty of St. Albans. Also surviving are three grandchildren, Michelle Long and her husband David of Bennington, Stephanie Gerrity and her husband Scott of Alburg and Krista Martin and her fiance Justin Rocheleau of St. Albans; five great-grandchildren, Kyle and Kayla King, Taylor Labor and Teagan and Savanna Long. She also leaves two nephews and their wives, Steve and Gail Courville of St. Albans and Marc and Julie Courville of Michigan; two great nephews, Shaun and Alexander Courville; and a great niece, Rachel Courville; as well as four step-grandchildren.

A Mass of Christian Burial will be celebrated Tuesday, Feb. 19, at 11 a.m. from St. Louis Roman Catholic Church, Lamkin Street, Highgate Center. The pastor, Father John J. Meagher, SSE will be the celebrant and homilist, concelebrating with Father Jean Paul Laplante pastor emeritus of St. Louis Parish. Interment will follow in the Courville family lot in Mount Calvary Cemetery in St. Albans. Friends may call at the Kidder Memorial Home, 89 Grand Ave., Swanton on Monday evening, Feb. 18, 2002, from 7 to 9 p.m.

GLADYS A. PRYME

SWANTON/SHELDON -- Mrs. Gladys A. (Rice) Pryme, age 95, died Thursday afternoon, Feb. 14, 2002, following an extended illness, in the Genesis Health Care Center, in Morrisville, where she had made her home for the past 13 years.

She was born in Highgate June 9, 1906, youngest daughter of seven children of the late Dexter and Gertrude (Percy) Rice. She was a resident of Sheldon during her younger years and a member of the Sheldon Methodist Church. After moving to Swanton, she was a member of the Memorial Methodist Church. Gladys was a life member of the Martha Washington Chapter #44, Order of the Eastern Star.

Feb. 19, 1925, she married William Pryme. Mr. Pryme died Oct. 6, 1982.

Mrs. Pryme is survived by her two sons, Richard and his wife Doris Pryme of St. Albans, Furman Pryme of Queensboro, N.Y.; five grandchildren; 11 great-grandchildren; several nieces and nephews. She was predeceased by her parents; her four sisters; and two brothers; and her daughter-in-law Beverly Karpel Pryme, wife of Furman Pryme.

Funeral services were held Saturday at 11 a.m. in the Brady & Levesque Chapel. Pastor Donavee Copenhaver, of the Missisquoi River Charge Methodist Churches of Rice Hill, Sheldon and Swanton, officiated. Interment was in the Pryme family lot in Highgate Center Cemetery. Arrangements were entrusted to the Brady & Levesque Funeral Home.

ALCINA S. THIBAULT

ST. ALBANS - Mrs. Alcina S. Thibault, age 83, died Friday morning, Feb. 15, 2002, in the Roncalli Health Care Center, following a brief illness. She was born in St. Albans July 3, 1918, daughter of the late Alcide and Clara (Ferland) St. Dennis. She graduated from Holy Angels School and was a switchboard operator for the New England Telephone Company for 21 years. During that time, she was transferred to Fort Dix, in New Jersey, as an operator for the war effort for a year and a half. She later became a bookkeeper for Peoples Trust Company for eight years and at the Franklin Lamoille Bank for 10 years. For over 17 years she was the volunteer bookkeeper for Holy Angels Parish. She was a lifelong communicant of Holy Angels and a member of the Ladies of St. Anne. She was a former member of the Holy Angels Mothers Club.

Oct. 11, 1942, she married Joffre Thibault, in Mt. Holly, N.J. Besides her husband, Joffre, Alcina is survived by her daughter Paule and her husband Reginald Fiske of Swanton; her son Norman and his wife Patricia Thibault of Merrimack, N.H.; eight grandchildren; four great-grandchildren; her sisters, Edwilda O'Brien of Albuquerque, N.M., and Sister Rolande St. Dennis of Manchester, N.H., along with several cousins, nieces and nephews. She was predeceased by her brothers Fernand St. Dennis, Urgel St. Dennis and sister Rita Gillespie.

A Mass of Christian Burial will be celebrated Tuesday at 10 a.m. in Holy Angels Church. Friends may call at the Brady & Levesque Funeral Home, 86 South Main St., from 2 to 4 and 7 to 9 p.m. on Monday. Interment will be in the Thibault family lot in Mt. Calvary Cemetery. Memorials may be made in Masses or to the Ladies of St. Anne Society of Holy Angels Parish, 246 Lake St., St. Albans, Vt. 05478. Arrangements are entrusted to the Brady & Levesque Funeral Home.

MAY ELIZABETH REGAN

ST. ALBANS - May Elizabeth Regan, 95, a lifelong resident of this area, passed away early Thursday morning, February 14, 2002 at Roncalli Health Center. She was born in Sheldon May 27, 1906, the daughter of the late William M. and Winifred (Thompson) Regan.

May graduated from Brigham Academy in Bakersfield and Bay Path Business College in Springfield, Massachusetts. She was a devout Christian and a member of St. Paul's United Methodist Church, the Phi Alpha Class, and Service Seekers Circle of the Kings Daughters. She retired in 1971 after completing 25 years in Teacher Placement with the Vermont Department of Education in Montpelier. She enjoyed worldwide travel and trips to the Middlebury Inn with the Seniors.

May is survived by nieces, nephews, cousins and many very close friends. In addition to her parents, she was predeceased by her sister, Doris Regan Burke; a half -brother, Fay Regan; and a half-sister, Winnie Barber.

A funeral service will be held on Sunday, Feb. 17 at 3 p.m. in St. Paul's United Methodist Church. Interment will be this spring in the family lot in Maple Grove Cemetery in Bakersfield. Memorial contributions may be made to the charity of one's choice. Visitation will be at the church from 2:30 p.m. until the time of the funeral. Arrangements are by the Heald Funeral Home, 87 So. Main St., St. Albans.
