Richard L. Morse

Richard L. Morse, 85, died Friday, June 13, 2003, at Dartmouth-Hitchcock Medical Center in Lebanon, N.H., as a result of post surgical complications.

He was born in Rutland on November 23, 1917, the son of J. Ray and Carrie (Burton) Morse.

He graduated from Rutland High School and enlisted in the National Guard, then became a member of the U.S. Air Force. During World War II he was a tail gunner on a B-17, stationed in Podington, England, and flew missions to Germany. He was shot down over France, hidden by the French Underground, captured by the Germans and was a POW for 14 months at Stalag Luft IV in Eastern Prussia. In the winter of 1945, he was on a forced march across Germany for 86 days covering approximately 600 miles. He was a proud American and was glad to have been able to serve his Country.

After leaving the service he was employed by the U.S. Post Office in Rutland. He was a member of the American Legion, Disabled American Veterans, Veterans of Foreign Wars and Ex-POW organizations.

He is survived by his wife of 51 years, Priscilla (McCarthy) Morse; his daughter, Susan M. Kuhn, her husband, Karl J. Kuhn, and grandsons, Eric and Scott of Haymarket, Virginia; and his son, Dr. Richard A. Morse, his wife, Dr. Christie L. Morse, and grandsons, Christopher and Jonathan of Hanover, New Hampshire.

There will be no calling hours and private services will be held at the convenience of the family. In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to the American Lung Association, 30 Farrell Street, Burlington, Vermont 05401, or to a favorite charity.

Tossing Funeral Home is in charge of arrangements.

Morris Krupnick

BURLINGTON — Morris “Murray” Krupnick, 78, of Burlington, died unexpectedly at his home on June 13, 2003.

He was born in Boston, Mass., on May 10, 1925. He served his country in the U.S. Army during World War II, receiving two Purple Hearts. Upon returning from the war, he obtained his Bachelor of Science degree from the University of Illinois and went on to complete his Master’s Degree from San Diego State University. He worked as an Aerospace Engineer for 40 years, completing his career at Grumman Corp. in Bethpage, N.Y.

He loved living an active life. He was an avid fisherman and thoroughly enjoyed gardening.

He is survived by the mother of his children, Claudette Krupnick of Mendon; his son, Dr. Kurt Krupnick and his wife Debbie of North Chittenden; and by his daughter, Kara Krupnick of Brooklyn, N.Y.; two grandchildren, Haley P. and Slater M. Krupnick, also of North Chittenden. He came from a large family of siblings, including his sisters, Miriam Abromson of Florida and Rose Willner of New York.

There will be no visiting hours. A private memorial service for the immediate family will be held.

Alphonse F. Poremski

FLORENCE — Alphonse F. Poremski, 86, died June 16, 2003, at his home.

Funeral arrangements are pending at the Barnard Funeral Home in Pittsford.

Warren F. Bolin Rites

The graveside service for Warren F. Bolin, 75, of Rutland, who died Jan. 17, 2003, was held Saturday in St. Joseph’s cemetery in Bristol. The Rev. Pierre Lavalee, pastor of St. Ambrose Church in Bristol, officiated.

Arrangements were under the direction of the Clifford Funeral Home.

Richard A. Chandler Rites

BRANDON — The graveside service for Richard Amos Chandler, 66, who died May 7, 2003, was held Saturday in Pine Hill cemetery with the Rev. Albert Baltz, pastor of St. Mary’s Catholic Church, officiating.

American Legion Post 55 of Brandon provided military honors.

Arrangements were under the direction of the Miller & Ketcham Funeral Home in Brandon.

Anne M. Carroll

CHESTER — Anne M. Carroll, 80, died June 16, 2003, at Grace Cottage Hospital in Townshend.

Funeral arrangements are pending at the Adams & Kenney Funeral Homes in Chester.

Ada Paquin

CHESTER — Ada Paquin, 97, died June 16, 2003, at Springfield Hospital.

Funeral arrangements are pending at the Adams & Kenney Funeral Homes in Chester.

Gaynell Webb

MANCHESTER CENTER — Gaynell “Fritty” Webb, 79, formerly of Arlington, died June 16, 2003, at Southwestern Vermont Medical Center in Bennington.

She was born Feb. 23, 1924, in Winsted, Conn., the daughter of Forrest and Gaynell (Parkinson) Jepson.

She graduated from Arlington Memorial High School in 1942.

She married James Webb Sr. on July 5, 1947. He died in 1976.

Mrs. Webb worked for Mack Molding and Cullinan’s Store. She later was a home provider and caregiver to many community people.

Survivors include a son, Jim Webb of Simpsonville, S.C.; a daughter, Martha LaBonte of Hoosick, N.Y.; a brother, George Jepson of Newport; a sister, Jane Jones of Marietta, Ga.; two granddaughters; nieces and nephews.

She was predeceased by a sister, Ruth Darby.

The graveside service will take place in Mount Pleasant (South End) cemetery in Sunderland at the convenience of the family.

Friends may call today from 6 to 8 p.m. at the Arlington Chapel of the Hanson-Walbridge Funeral Home.

Memorial contributions may be made to the Arlington Rescue Squad or the Manchester Rescue Squad, in care of the Hanson-Walbridge Arlington Chapel, P.O. Box 528, Arlington, 05250.

Arrangements are under the direction of the Arlington Chapel of the Hanson-Walbridge Funeral Home.

William G. Maitland Sr.

SHAFTSBURY — William G. Maitland Sr., 73, of Venice, Fla., formerly of Shaftsbury, died June 13, 2003, at Bon Secours Hospital in Venice.

He was born Sept. 30, 1929, in Rockville Centre, N.Y., the son of William and Mabel (Wolf) Maitland.

He graduated from Hempstead (N.Y.) High School in 1949.

He married Audrey Chapek on Sept. 15, 1951, in Hempstead.

Mr. Maitland served with the Nassau County, N.Y., Police Department for 20 years, retiring in 1975. He then moved to Shaftsbury, where he and Brud Riley owned and operated B&B Construction in the Bennington area.

He was a U.S. Army veteran, serving as a paratrooper in the 82 nd Airborne Division during World War II.

He was a member of St. Mark’s Episcopal Church, American Legion Post 159 and Elks Lodge, all in Venice, and the Wantaugh Masonic Lodge in Bellmore, N.Y. He was also a member and past president of the NorShaft Lions Club in Shaftsbury.

Survivors include his wife of Venice; a daughter, Diane Kitchell of Bellmore; two sons, Paul Maitland of Shaftsbury and William Maitland Jr. of Sayville, Long Island, N.Y.; two sisters, Carole Thomas of Richmond, Va., and Joyce Pradon of Smithtown, Long Island, N.Y.; four grandchildren; and several nieces, nephews and cousins.

The funeral service will be held Thursday at 11 a.m. at the Mahar & Son Funeral Home with the Rev. Penny Hawkins of St. Peter’s Episcopal Church officiating. A private burial will take place in Center Shaftsbury cemetery at the convenience of the family.

Friends may call Wednesday from 2 to 4 p.m. and 7 to 9 p.m. at the funeral home. All members of Mount Anthony Lodge 13, F&AM, are asked to meet at the funeral home at 8 p.m. to conduct their service.

Memorial contributions in lieu of flowers may be made to the NorShaft Lions Club, through the office of the Mahar & Son Funeral Home, 628 Main St., Bennington, 05201.

Arrangements are under the direction of the Mahar & Son Funeral Home.

Gary L. Bechtel

BENNINGTON — Gary L. Bechtel, 72, died June 15, 2003, as a result of a tractor accident at his home.

He was born April 12, 1931, in Cleveland, Ohio, the son of Gordon and Inez (Granquist) Bechtel.

He graduated from Cleveland Heights High School and Ohio University.

He married Sandra (Bixler) Peckham on Aug. 3, 1986, in Irvington, N.Y.

Mr. Bechtel was general manager of sales on the Eastern Seaboard at Glidden Paint Co. in Reading, Pa., and later vice president of sales in New York at Smith Corona. In 1983 he and his wife founded Telemar Data Systems and later South Stream Enterprises. For the last four years, Mr. Bechtel worked at AFLAC Insurance as a regional and district sales coordinator.

He was a U.S. Army veteran, serving during the Korean War.

Mr. Bechtel enjoyed hunting, his farm, and his horses.

Survivors include his wife of Bennington; three sons, Steve Bechtel of Atlanta, Brett Bechtel of Wallingford, Conn., and Eric Bechtel of Upper Saddle River, N.J.; a daughter, Shari Ouellette of Trumbull, Conn.; a stepdaughter, Linda Peckham of Chicago; two stepsons, Robert Peckham of Ridgefield, Conn., and Tom Peckham of Tucson, Ariz.; a brother, Gordon Bechtel of Gainesville, Fla.; and 13 grandchildren.

He was predeceased by a son, Gary Bechtel.

The memorial service will be held Thursday at 10 a.m. at Irvington Presbyterian Church in Irvington, N.Y., with the Rev. David Harkness officiating. Burial will follow in Frederick Jenkins Memorial Garden in Irvington.

There will be no calling hours.

Memorial contributions may be made to AFLAC Cancer Center in Atlanta, through the office of the Mahar & Son Funeral Home, 628 Main St., Bennington, 05201.

Arrangements are under the direction of the Mahar & Son Funeral Home.

Cleo Payne

WOODSTOCK — The graveside service for Cleo Payne, 84, who died Feb. 18, 2003, will be held Saturday at 10 a.m. in Burns cemetery in Pomfret.

Arrangements are under the direction of the Cabot Funeral Home in Woodstock.

Barbara R. Ford

WINDSOR — The graveside service for Barbara Reynolds Ford, 80, who died March 25, 2003, will be held Saturday at 11 a.m. in St. Francis cemetery in Windsor with the Rev. Paul Belhumeur officiating.

Arrangements are under the direction of the Knight Funeral Home in Windsor.

Michael D. Gola

WINDSOR — The graveside service for Michael D. Gola, 56, who died Feb. 7, 2003, will be held Saturday at 11 a.m. in St. Francis cemetery in Windsor with the Rev. Paul Belhumeur officiating.

Arrangements are under the direction of the Knight Funeral Home in Windsor.

Janis M. Reynolds

WINDSOR — The graveside service for Janis Mae Reynolds, 77, who died Dec. 15, 2002, will be held Saturday at noon in the Taftsville cemetery. The Rev. Christina Brannock, pastor of St. James Episcopal Church in Woodstock, will officiate.

Arrangements are under the direction of the Knight Funeral Home in Windsor.
