Richard H. Reisner
(November 14, 1943 - May 29, 2011)

Richard H. Reisner - 67, of Fayston, VT, passed away in the comfort of his family at the Central Vermont Medical Center in Berlin, VT on Sunday, May 29, 2011. Born in Washington, DC on November 14, 1943, he was the son of the late Frederick W. and Gyda (Hansen) Reisner. On July 13, 1997, he married the former Sally Anne Demarest in Westfield, NJ.
Richard helped found several startup bio-medical device companies, the most recent being Exogen, Inc. of Piscataway, NJ where he went on to serve as Vice President and Chief Financial Officer. Retiring to Fayston, VT ten years ago with his wife Sally, Richard enjoyed being an active member and past president of Vermont Adaptive Ski and Sports and recently was proud to have earned his Professional Ski Instructor certification. His other memberships included the Mad River Valley Rotary Club and the Professional Ski Instructors of America. While living in New Jersey, Richard was an active member of St. Helen’s Parish Community and was a board member of the Union County Coalition to House the Homeless.
An accomplished lifelong sailor, Richard and his wife Sally enjoyed their summers on Lake Champlain.
Richard is survived by his wife, Sally Anne Reisner of Fayston, VT; his daughter, Ingrid Reisner of Philadelphia, PA; his son, Erik Reisner and his wife, Lisa and their children, Anabelle and Madeline of Warren, VT; two stepsons, Scott Boyd and his wife, Suzanne and their children, Emma, Maxwell and James of Olympia, WA; and James Boyd and his wife, Stacey and their children, Lilly and Levi of Condon, MT; a sister, Barbara Young of San Raphael, CA; a brother, William F. Reisner and his wife, Anne of Wicomico Church, VA; as well as nieces, nephews and extended family.
Together with his oncology team, headed by Dr. John Valentine, Richard waged his battle against Leukemia for nine years, never allowing the cancer to impact his quality of life. He and his wife were able to travel the world together. He will be sorely missed by those whose lives he touched.
A memorial celebration will be held by the family this summer. In lieu of flowers, donations to Vermont Adaptive Ski and Sports (www.vermontadaptive.org) or to the Mad River Valley Rotary Club (PO Box 267, Waitsfield, VT 05673) are greatly appreciated.

Michael Arthur Martin
(April 22, 1952 - August 9, 2011)

Michael Arthur Martin - 59, of Dummerston and formerly of Waterbury, passed away in Brattleboro on Tuesday, August 9, 2011. Born in Montpelier on April 22, 1952, he was the son of the late Wayland and Mary A. (Canale) Martin. On October 29, 2010, he married the former Jennifer Dusenbery in Dummerston.
Michael grew up in Waterbury and was a 1970 graduate of Harwood Union High School in Duxbury. He continued his education at Johnson State College, and the College of Arts, Media and Design at Northeastern University in Boston.
Michael started his working career with Overlake Distributors in Burlington and Florida and then founded his own electronics business in Barre, named Great Electronics. Moving to Albuquerque, New Mexico, Michael started a journey that led him to studying alternative medicine at the Ayurvedic Institute from which he graduated with his degree in Ayurvedic Medicine. The pursuit of well-being, natural health and foods led Michael to not only start his own Ayurvedic Medicine practice but also work for various natural food companies such as Wild Oats Natural Foods, Sun Flower, The Vitamin Shoppe, Tree of Life which had him traveling extensively throughout the United States. Moving to the Brattleboro area 5 years ago, he became the manager for the Brattleboro Food Co-op, a job that he loved very much and enjoyed being part of its growth and success.
Michael’s memberships included the Free and Accepted Masons, the Natural Grocery Co. Association where he was very active in policies, and in his leisure time, enjoyed brewing beer, cooking, raising chickens, riding his motorcycle, kayaking, canoeing, fishing, hunting and spending time with his best friend, Barry at his camp on Miller Pond in Groton.
Those who knew Michael felt his passion for his work, his family and his friends. Meeting the true love of his life, Jennifer, has been the greatest gift. The life they shared brought him contentment, love and peace and it was evident that he enjoyed every minute.
Michael is survived by his wife, Jennifer Martin of Dummerston; his children, Trinity Nasca of Buffalo NY, Ella Martin of Burlington, Leah Martin of St. Albans, Jesse Martin of Cottonwood AZ, Corporal Rory Martin USMC, of Lake Mary FL, and Keegan Martin of Lake Nary FL; 3 grandchildren, Destiny and Desiree Turner, and Amelia Martin; his stepchildren, Sam, Mitchell and Evelyn Dusenbery, all of Dummerston, Abrie Brutsche of Boulder CO and Zach Brutsche of Sedona AZ; 2 sisters, Jo Ann Berno and her husband, Randy of Duxbury, and Cathy Fisk and her husband, Shane of Duxbury; 3 nieces, Elizabeth Berno, Erin Wheeler and Ashley Fisk; 2 nephews, Martin Berno and Tyler Fisk; as well as his best friend, Barry McGinnes of West Lebanon NH.
A Celebration of Michael’s Life will be held from the Wesley United Methodist Church, 56 South Main Street, Waterbury VT on Wednesday, August 17, 2011 at 11 a.m. with a reception to follow in the church dining room. Ruth Mehrtens Pray
(August 3, 1914 - June 12, 2011)

Ruth Mehrtens Pray - 96, of Waterbury, passed away on Sunday, June 12th, 2011, at Fletcher Allen Health Care in Burlington. She was born in Corona, New York, August 3, 1914, daughter of the late Samuel and Emily (Ceely) Mehrtens. One of 13 children, she graduated from Newtown High School and worked for 40 years for the Consolidated Edison Company, rising through the ranks to a management position in Accounts Receivable. After retirement, she was an active volunteer at Mercy Hospital in Rockville Centre, NY for nearly 25 years. In July 1978 Ruth married Charles Pray of Malverne, NY and moved to Malverne, where she resided from 1978 to 2004. Mr. Pray passed away on January 6, 1996. A great athlete, Ruth enjoyed golf, tennis and bowling. She participated in two bowling leagues weekly for many decades, earning trophies for her skill. She was an avid fan of baseball, routing for all the New York teams. She often spoke of meeting Babe Ruth and other famous old-time ball players. In addition to her love of sports, Ruth was known for her generosity; she gave unstintingly of both her time and her money, contributing to many local, national and international charities. She moved to Vermont in 2004, and began volunteering at the Full Ladle Soup Kitchen in Montpelier soon thereafter. She was a member of Grace Episcopal Church in Corona, NY, and, after her relocation to Vermont, of Christ Church (Episcopal) in Montpelier. All her siblings predeceased her. Survivors include 4 nieces, Susan Mehrtens of Waterbury, Charlotte Mehrtens of South Burlington, Patricia Dunlop of Wayzata, Minnesota, and Janet Solner of Nesconset, New York. Services will be private. The family has asked that, in lieu of flowers, donations be sent to: The Full Ladle Soup Kitchen, c/o Christ Church (Episcopal), 64 State St., Montpelier VT 05602. Marie Ann Hartshorn
(June 7, 1939 - June 21, 2011)

Marie Ann Hartshorn - 72, a lifelong Mad River Valley resident, passed away in the comfort of her family at the Vermont Respite House in Williston on June 21, 2011 following a 15-year battle with cancer. Born in North Fayston on June 7, 1939, she was the daughter of the late Ernest and Anna (James) Nelson. On October 26, 1957, she married Paul H. Hartshorn in Waitsfield.
Marie was a graduate of Waitsfield High School and as a young woman, worked as a nursing assistant at the Vermont State Hospital in Waterbury. Following her marriage, she and her husband Paul, owned and operated the Ox-Bow Dairy Farm on Route 100 in Waitsfield for 35 years. In addition, Marie was integral in the family operation of a large maple sugaring and logging business.
Her memberships included the Waitsfield United Church of Christ, the former Maple Rebekah Lodge #56 of Waitsfield, Emerald Rebekah Lodge #33 of Waterbury and the Vermont Farm Bureau. In her leisure time Marie loved to dance, sing, play the piano by ear and vacation in Hawaii and Alaska.
Family was the center of Marie’s life. Whether it was spending time at their camp on Lake Champlain together, traveling to Florida to visit, the joy was the company of the people she loved. The reflection of her caring has been seen in the mutual love of her family for Marie. Her daughter Jenni has devoted the last 15 years caring for her Mom, and Jenni’s son Aiden has been the light of Marie’s life for the past three years.
Marie is survived by her husband of 53 years, Paul H. Hartshorn of Waitsfield; their children, Kathi Orr and her husband, Reginald of Waitsfield, David Hartshorn and his companion, Amy Todisco of Waitsfield, Cindi Jones and her husband, James of Warren, and Jenni Heath and her husband, Chad of Waitsfield; her grandchildren, Tyler Hartshorn and his fiancée, Jennifer Dean, Caitlyn Hartshorn, Ramsey Orr and his wife, Lauren, Jason Jones, Jessica Jones and Aiden Heath; a great-grandchild, Elladaye Orr; a cousin who was like a sister to her, Pauline Hodges of Dade City FL; her beloved and faithful Shih Tzu, SheShe; a longtime family friend, Lisa Palmer of Waitsfield; as well as nieces, nephews and extended family.
A Celebration of Marie’s life will be held from the Waitsfield United Church of Christ on Monday, June 27, 2011 at 11 a.m. with a reception to follow in the church dining room. Inurnment will take place in the Waitsfield Common cemetery. Alfred A. Tanck
(June 20, 1938 - July 9, 2011)

Alfred A. Tanck - 73, passed away unexpectedly at his Warren home on Saturday, July 9, 2011. Born in Merrill WI on June 20, 1938, he was the son of the late Alfred E. and Margaret (Gaedek) Tanck. On September 10, 1960, Alfred and Barbara were married in Milwaukee WI.
Alfred was a graduate of Pulaski High School in Milwaukee WI and then continued his education at Michigan State University where he received both his Bachelor of Science and Masters degrees. In his earlier years, Alfred worked in his family’s Supermarket business in Waterford WI. He later was employed as the Beverage Division Vice President for General Foods Corporation before becoming the Senior Vice President for the Schaefer Brewing Co. in New York City. Most recently he worked for the Olin Corporation in Stamford CT, retiring in 1987 where he has since made his home in Warren. While living in Stamford CT, Alfred was an active member and Elder with the Turner River Presbyterian Church as well as the Stamford Yacht Club. In his leisure time he enjoyed reading.
Alfred is survived by his former wife, Barbara Tanck of Warren; his two children, Tracy Ellis and her husband, Charles of Northfield, Todd Tanck and his wife, Colleen of Greensboro NC; and five grandchildren, Tyler Ellis and Chase Ellis, both of Northfield, and Alexandra Tanck, Samantha Tanck, and Scott Tanck, all of North Carolina.

Alyce J. LaVanway
(Died July 28, 2011)

Alyce Janeen LaVanway, the 7th Child of Albert and Zelda (Hartshorn) LaVanway, Jr., started her life journey in Berlin, VT, on July 31 1975 and that journey ended all too soon on July 28, 2011 in Longwood, FL, at the age of 35. She moved with family to Florida at the age of 4 and graduated from Flagler Palm Coast High in 1993 where she was manager of the wrestling team, on the basketball team and won two creative artist ribbons with her artistic ability. Alyce lived her life smiling and serving others in her waitress career. She now can enjoy her dance with her Daddy who passed in August 2009; her High School buddy, Kenny Evans, who passed in June 1991; and her beloved pet Deogee who passed in 2007. She takes with her a smile that will never be forgotten and leaves a deep love that will remain forever with those of us who knew her. Devoted friend, sister, and daughter, Alyce is survived by her mother, Zelda LaVanway of Fayston, brothers, Maurice and wife Barb of Duxbury, Wendall of St. Augustine, FL, Glenn of Waitsfield, Kevin and wife Paige of Duxbury, Chris and Fiancé Myrna of Winter Park, FL and sister Darleen of Oviedo, FL. There are two nieces in FL and four in VT. Two nephews in IN, one nephew in FL and two in VT. A grand nephew and niece in IN, three grand nieces and one grand nephew in VT, Dave Young, a devoted and faithful companion, as well as a large extended family.
Graveside services will be held from the North Fayston cemetery on August 14, 2011 at 3:00 p.m. In lieu of flowers, it would please the family if you considered a donation to the South Seminole Hospital, 555 W. George "J.R." Byrd, Jr.
(April 23, 1958 - August 10, 2011)

George F. “J.R.” Byrd, Jr. - 53, passed away unexpectedly on August 10, 2011 in Berlin. Born in Burlington on April 23, 1958, he was the son of George F. Byrd, Sr. and Mary (Mercier) Byrd. On July 21, 1989 he married the former Melanie A. Morse in Duxbury.
J.R. was a 1977 graduate of Milton High School where he lettered in Basketball, Track and Field and Soccer, having served as Captain of the team. He also was President of the Varsity Club. Following graduation J.R. served in the US Army and then worked as a machinist, worked in construction and as a psychiatric technician at the Vermont State Hospital in Waterbury. For the past 12 years J.R. has worked for Green Mountain Coffee Roasters in Waterbury, first as a truck driver and more recently as a machine operator in the Keurig Division.
His leisure time was filled enjoying RC Race Cars, was an avid fan of Stock Car Racing at both Catamount and Thunder Road, riding his Harley Davidson Motorcycle as well as hunting and fishing.
J.R.’s son, Ethan, was his proudest accomplishment and pride and joy. A dedicated and active supporter of the U-32 boys sports programs, where Ethan attended school, J.R. treated all of the boys participating as if they were his own and was always willing to share his opinion and advice whether they wanted it or not.
J.R.’s favorite times were spent in the company of his family and friends.
J.R. is survived by his wife, Melanie A. Byrd of Berlin; their son, Ethan D. Byrd of Berlin; his father and stepmother, George and Carol Byrd, Sr. of Hyde Park; his mother, Mary Byrd of Burlington; 2 sisters, Lisa Vayou and her husband, Jon of Georgia, and Donna Quintin and her husband, Butch of Geneva FL; as well as nieces, nephews and extended family. J.R. was predeceased by a sister, Lynn Byrd Quintin.
A Celebration of J.R.’s Life will be held from the Waterbury American Legion on Monday, August 15, 2011 at 2 pm with a reception to follow. Elizabeth "Libby" Towne
(May 18, 1956 - June 1, 2011)

O. Elizabeth “Libby” Towne - 55, passed away on Wednesday, June 1, 2011. Born in Troy NY on May 18, 1956, she was the daughter of Margaret (Darnley) Towne and the late Morris Towne. On June 22, 1997, Libby married Douglas A. Lombard in Stowe.
Libby was a graduate of the Hoosac School in Hoosick, NY and continued her education at the College of Wooster in Wooster OH and was a graduate of Champlain College. Libby went on to worked for the City of Burlington in the Planning Office, the Mayors Office and for the Burlington Electric Department, from which she retired.
A “job” that Libby truly loved was serving as the friend, driver and personal assistant to the late Rena Chernick of Warren/Montpelier.
In 2000, Libby and her husband Doug, purchased an existing B&B in Middlesex Vermont renaming it the 1850 River House B&B. Libby poured her soul into the business along with all of her special touches and humor that will be remembered by the hundreds of guests who have stayed there over the years. Many guests have returned year after year to partake of Libby’s hospitality.
Libby was well known for her exquisite all wool hand braided rugs that grace the floors of the Bed and Breakfast and would occasionally sell one if she knew it was going to a good home.
She loved her two children and new granddaughter, rug braiding, crafts, nature, singing with the Mad River Chorale and had a legendary love for bears and rocks. Libby was a generous and good person who cared deeply for the less fortunate and would not let go of a cause she truly believed in.
Libby is survived by her husband, Douglas A. Lombard of Middlesex; her mother, Margaret Towne of Pittstown NY; her children, Margaret Bojanowski and her husband, Andrew and their daughter, Nova Rose Bojanowski, of Middlebury, and Gregory Allard of Waterbury; 3 sisters, Abigail Vietz of Warren, Sandra Towne of Bracey VA, and Susan Schaefer of New Haven; a brother, Makey Towne of Golden CO; as well as nieces, nephews and extended family.
Memorial services will be held from the Middlesex United Methodist Church on Tuesday, June 7, 2011 at 1 p.m. with a reception to follow in the church dining room. Interment services will be private. The family requests that flowers be omitted; rather memorial gifts would be appreciated to the Mater Ecclesiae College, Consecrated Women of Regnum Christi, 60 Austin Avenue, Greenville, RI 02828.
