Richard Robert Paradis
5/23/1957 - 9/14/2010

Richard R. Paradis, 53, of Waterford passed through the door of death into his heavenly home with Jesus on September 14 after a courageous battle with cancer. He was home where he wanted to be with his wife, Bonny, and daughters by his side. Rick fought hard to live and stay with his family for as long as possible, but at the end he knew it was time to go.

Rick was born in Norwich, Connecticut on May 23, 1957, the son of Ernest and Jeannette (Duprey) Paradis. He met the love of his life and his “rock”, Bonny Hale on a trip to the beach. They were married February 23 1985 and celebrated their 25th anniversary this year.

After moving to Vermont, Rick and Bonny settled in South Ryegate where he worked in the maintenance department of Lake Morey Inn Resort as the conference set up person for several years.

In 2007, he and Bonny moved to Davenport, Florida, to live with and take care of his in-laws, Don and Louise. After Don’s death, Rick, Bonny and Louise moved back to Vermont to be near family. Rick and Bonny lived with Louise to help her as needed. Even after back surgery, Rick insisted on climbing on his tractor and mowing the lawn.

Rick was very proud of his accomplishment of beating alcoholism. On August 20, in spite of his illness, he was able to attend an Alcoholics Anonymous celebration banquet where he was awarded his 10-year pin.

Rick and Bonny loved to play bingo and hang out with their bingo buddies. He continued playing for as long as he was physically able, stopping only when he became too weak to go. He also enjoyed feeding and watching the birds and listening to his collection of wind chimes.

Rick loved his family and was able to express that love to them in his last days as they nursed and cared for him at home. He was especially close to his brother, David, who made several trips from Connecticut to Vermont during Rick’s illness to help care for him.

He is survived by his wife Bonny (Hale) Paradis; three daughters, Jessica, Stephanie and “son” Nick, and Samantha; four grandchildren (who knew him as Papa); Damien Prue, Devin Pitts, Cameron Sabens and Hailey Blair; two brothers David Paradis and wife Cindy and Ernest Paradis and wife Gail; sister, Kathy Woodworth and husband Dewey Dale; mother-in-law, Louise Hale; sister-in-law, Linda Essaff and husband Paul; brother-in-law, Timothy Hale and wife Lisa; nieces and nephews.

He was predeceased by his parents, Ernest and Jeannette: brother Phillip; father-in-law Donald Hale; and brothers-in-law, Keith Hale and Douglas McGregor.

A celebration of Rick’s life will be held Thursday, September 23, at New Beginnings Christian Church in St. Johnsbury VT at 2:00. Pastor Rick Menard will lead the service.

Because Rick was very concerned about his wife Bonny, who has recently been diagnosed with fibromyalgia, a memorial fund has been set up to help with her expenses. In lieu of flowers, contributions may be directed to: “Rick Paradis Memorial Fund” c/o Linda Essaff, 30 Dundee Street, St. Johnsbury VT 05819.

Sayles Funeral Home has assisted the family with arrangements.
