Richard Joseph Fleck
April 30, 1938 - December 14, 2010
Richard J. Fleck (Joe), age 72, a resident of Colville, WA passed away on December 14, 2010 in Colville. He was born on April 30, 1938 in Woodbury, NJ the son of William Chalmer and Ethel Marie (Davis) Fleck.
Joe was a career military man, retiring in 1979 after 23 of service in the U.S. Air Force. He was stationed at Fairchild Air Force Base where he met his first wife, the mother of his six children, Judy Meeker Fleck Shearer. He was also stationed in Glasgow, Montana, at the Pentagon, in Washington, DC, Keflavik, Iceland, Malstrom Air Force Base in Montana and finally at Edwards Air Force Base in California during the test flight landings of the space shuttle. Joe retired in 1979 and moved to Kennewick, WA.
Joe married his second wife Doris in 1980. In 1985 he moved to Pullman, WA to be closer to his children who were attending college at the University of Idaho. He was an apartment complex manager at Wil-Ru apartments, until he retired in 2000 and moved to Moscow, ID.
In June of 2010 he moved to Colville, WA to live with his daughter and son-in-law, Cindy Fleck Calene and Melvin Calene, and spoil his grandchildren Nathan, Olivia, Hannah and Elise Calene.
Joe was an avid sports fan. He coached most of his son’s football and baseball teams. Joe often arranged pick up football games with his sons and the neighborhood kids playing quarterback for both sides. When not coaching or playing he loved watching sports both live and on television. He made big sports fans of his 5 sons and all of his grandsons. He attended Dodger games with his children in the summers while living in California, and was a season ticket holder for WSU football for over twenty years while living in Pullman.
Joe was also a big music fan. He was a member of Glee Club in high school and was voted 'King of Rock-n- Roll' by his class of 1956. His interest in music was wide and varied. He loved rock, jazz, soul, and classical. He loved attending concerts with his kids and grand kids and one of his favorites was driving up to Vancouver, BC to see Pink Floyd in their final concert tour.
Joe is survived by his children, Joe Fleck, Bonners Ferry, ID, Jon Fleck and wife, Sandy, Mead, WA, Allan Fleck and wife, Jen, Washougal, WA, Tony Fleck and wife, Pam, Scottsdale, AZ, Cindy Calene and husband, Melvin, Colville, WA, Bill Fleck and Sara, Vancouver, WA, step-son Robert Hampton and wife Patty of Pullman, and step-daughter Sharon, thirty-three grandchildren, numerous great grandchildren, sister, Joan Sansor, Sacramento, CA, and his ex-wife Judy Shearer, of Bonners Ferry, ID.
He was preceded in death by his wife, Doris and brothers, Bill, Bob and Ken Fleck and sisters, Betty Holman and Pat Armstrong and his parents.
Joe was honored with a full military ceremony where he was buried at the Veterans cemetery in Medical Lake, WA on December 17, 2010 followed by a memorial service, Friday at Spokane Faith Center 3330 W. Central St., Spokane, WA. Memorial contributions may be given to the American Diabetes Association.

Charlene 'Charlie' Marie Nelson
March 10, 1953 - December 9, 2010
Charlene 'Charlie' Marie Nelson, a longtime resident of Colville, WA passed away in Colville on December 9, 2010 at the age of 57. She was born on March 10, 1953 in Winner, South Dakota to Robert Charles and Wanda Marie (Johnson) Nelson.
Charlie moved with her family to Colville when she was one year old. She attended school in Colville and graduated from Colville High School in 1971. She worked at Safeway for a couple of years before attending Spokane Falls Community College where she attained her Associate’s Degree in cosmetology. She owned and operated her beauty salon called Charlie’s for a couple of years before working at other salons as a hairstylist. She moved back to Colville in 1993 to raise her two daughters Chantélle and Angela. She worked for Style Makers for several years, and then went to work for Addis Home Health Care as a caregiver before her health forced her to quit working.
Charlie loved camping and spending time outdoors, and was a cowgirl at heart. She always came up with a new craft or hobby each year, and shared her handiwork with friends and family at Christmas. She was an active member of the Free Methodist Church where she helped with Sunday School and went on a mission to Mexico in 2006. Charlie loved animals, and was rarely without some kind of a pet. She was a goofball who could always make her family laugh with her quirky sense of humor. Charlie loved her collections, especially the numerous angels she had around her house. Charlie loved her daughters with all her heart, and always knew how to make them laugh and enjoy life. She was a great person to be around, and will be missed by all who new and loved her. From all of her family, 'You are my sunshine.'
Charlie was preceded in death by her infant sister Tana Mae Nelson in 1958 and her step-father Pat Lynch.
She is survived by her 2 daughters, Chantélle Nelson and Angela Nelson of Colville, Her mother Wanda Lynch of Colville, her father Robert Nelson and wife Sherri of Colville, her brother Ross Nelson and his wife Becky of Colville, her sister Lynette Nelson of Soap Lake, WA, her step-brother Pat Mike Lynch, her special nephew 'like a son' Austin Nelson, her great aunt Elda Johnson, and numerous aunts, uncles, nieces, nephews and cousins.

Emma Doris Fowlkes
May 16, 1933 - December 8, 2010
Emma D. Fowlkes, a longtime resident of Colville, WA passed away on December 8, 2010 in Spokane, WA at the age of 77. Emma was born on May 16, 1933 in Colville, the daughter of Harrison Lyman and Fernichia Edna (Burt) Barden. Emma was one of eight children.
Emma was raised and attended school in Kettle Falls. In 1951, she started her family and moved to a farm east of Colville, WA. There she assisted with the operation of the farm while raising a large garden. In 1968, Emma and her family relocated to Omak, WA. While in Omak, she owned and operated the Pioneer Café. In 1973 they returned to Addy. Emma continued her work in the restaurant industry as a cook at both Newland’s Cafe and King Cole’s restaurants in Colville. She later purchased a home in Colville where she has resided since.
Emma focused her life around family and loved family functions. Her children fondly remember the special family times shared at Lake Roosevelt and Duck Lake (near Omak). They also shared a great appreciation for Emma’s work ethic and the special occasions when she would take them to the movies, to get ice cream, or even the rare but memorable pizza nights. Emma enjoyed dancing and bowling in her youth. She especially loved sunny days and would sit in her front yard soaking it up and love it when her children and grand children would visit. In addition, she had a lifetime love of puzzles and spent many enjoyable hours searching for pieces with her family. Emma was always ready to help her family if they needed a place to stay or was short on cash; she was always someone you could talk with if you needed.
Emma was preceded in death by her daughter, Jessica Miller and a grandson, Morgan.
She is survived by three daughters, Victoria Pell and husband, Randy, Spokane, WA; Belinda Herriman, and husband Glenn, Omak, WA; Alisa Dennison and husband, Alvin; seven sons, Leslie Hegney and wife, Susan, Long Lake, WA., Marshall Hegney, Monsanto, WA. Robin Hegney and wife, Lisa, Colville, WA; Russell Hegney and wife, Suzette, Colville, WA; Kasey Hegney, Colville, WA; Tracy Hegney and wife, Suzanne, Colville WA; Jody Fowlkes and wife, Teri, Spokane Valley, WA; 38 grandchildren and 29 great grandchildren.
A graveside service will be held at 2:00 p.m., Monday, May 16, 2010 at the Highland cemetery in Colville, WA. Pastor Bob Todd will officiate. Memorial contributions may be given to the American Lung Association.

Donald William Jarvis
February 17, 1941 - November 29, 2010
Donald William Jarvis, age 69, passed away unexpectedly November 29, 2010 in Spokane, Washington. He was born February 7, 1941 to Ray and Mary (Steinhoff) Jarvis. Both Don and his brother Ed were born and raised in Tacoma, Washington.
After graduating from high school, Don attended WSU in Pullman, where he earned his degree in Range Management. He joined the United States Air Force in 1965, serving his country for 4 years. Don was honorably discharged in 1969 as Captain. During his station in South Carolina, he met and fell in love with Helen Dyal. They were married at the Shaw AFB in May of 1969.
Upon leaving the Air Force, Don and Helen moved to Nevada where they resided until moving their young family to Cheyenne, Wyoming in 1980. They were blessed with both a daughter, Mary, and a son, Kelly. Don worked for the Bureau of Land Management as their Systems Administer. Once retired, Don and Helen moved to Evans, Washington. He had fond memories of his childhood spending time in Evans with his father camping, fishing and hunting.
Along with his love of hunting and fishing with his family, he also enjoyed fly tying and photography. He was an avid fan of the Mariners and the Seahawks, watching the games from the comfort of his home.
Donald was preceded by his wife of 37 years, Helen; his brother, Ed Jarvis; and his nephew, Tom Jarvis. He is survived by his son, Kelly Jarvis, of Pullman; his daughter, Mary Jarvis, and grandson Adrian Wood, both of Milwaukee, OR; sister-in-law, Nancy Jarvis; niece, Kathleen Daly and nephew, William Jarvis.
At the request of Mr. Jarvis, there will be no services.

FLORENCE COOPER
September 19, 1917 - November 29, 2010
Florence Cooper, a longtime resident of Kettle Falls passed away on November 29, 2010 in Colville at the age of 93. She was born on September 19, 1917 in Dalkena, WA, the daughter of Frank and Mabel (Hallgreen) Proell.
Florence moved as a small child to Enterprise, OR and lived there until she was 16 and moved to the Pingston Creek area of Kettle Falls when she was 16. She met Byron Cooper in 1939, and they carried on a friendship until they were married on April 24, 1953 in Spokane, WA. The couple lived in Colville until 1958 when they bought a farm in Pingston Creek and farmed that ground until 1967 when they bought their farm at Greenwood. They stayed at Greenwood until 2003 when they downsized and moved into Kettle Falls.
Florence loved to spend her leisure time outdoors, especially fishing on the local lakes and rivers, and also hunted several bucks when she was younger. Florence had a love of making crafts for her house, and her talent also showed in her crocheting and sewing. She always had a large garden and canning the fruits of her labor. Florence joined the Order of the Eastern Star in the 1960’s, and loved serving her community through the organization. Florence will be missed by all who knew and loved her.
Florence is survived by her husband of 57 years, Byron Cooper and many nieces, nephews, cousins and friends.

Stefanie Gayle Fritz
November 23, 1968 - November 29, 2010
Stefanie Gayle Fritz, a resident of Colville, WA, passed away on November 29, 2010 in Spokane at the age of 42. Stephanie was born on Nov. 23, 1968 in Bellingham, WA the second child of Jerrold Grady and Sharon Gayle (Harris) Windsor. Her arrival was prolonged for two hours in a frozen parking lot with her mother saying, 'I’m not going in there, I’ll just wait here a few more minutes'. Stefanie was born a short while later with beautiful curly blond hair which didn’t change until her teens.
Stefanie attended Mount Vernon schools from kindergarten through her graduation with honors from the Mount Vernon High School in 1986. School always came very easy to her, she was incredibly intelligent, getting straight A’s without ever studying which never ceased to frustrate her little sister, Shawna, and brother, Grady. Stefanie was very active in Blue Birds and Future Farmers of America. She absolutely loved animals and never thought twice about bringing the sick and homeless ones back to her home to nurture back to health. They even raised a baby lamb, whose bed was aside the wood stove in their home until it was healthy enough to live outside. Stephanie also played basketball and the cello with the Mount Vernon High School Orchestra.
Stefanie graduated from Washington State University in 1991 with honors. She earned degrees in Agricultural Economics and Business. She worked on the Animal Farm and at the WSU Dairy. She loved bringing her family the famous 'Cougar Gold' cheese and taking them to the dairy for ice cream when they visited her at college. After college, Stefanie returned to Skagit Valley where she worked at a Veterinary clinic and at the Nookachamps Dairy before accepting a position as sales broker for C.F. Fresh, an all organic fruit company. During this time, she fell in loved with Todd Fritz. They were married on the shores of Yellowstone Lake in 1994 with all her family present. They began a family which grew to include their three boys, Lane, Kasey and Justis. The family relocated to Colville in 2004. Stefanie spent the first four years in their wonderful country home on Dolomite Road. She then moved to town to be closer to church, school, sports and other activities.
She was an avid sports fan, enjoying and supporting her three boys in football, baseball and basketball. She loved the annual family hunting camp in the Kettle Range near Sherman Pass and always brought her boys to share in the tradition. Her camp specialties and favored delights were a fifteen pound lasagna and homemade cookies. Stefanie embraced the small town environment, helpful neighbors, proximity to schools and safe community surrounding her Colville home. She also treasured her loving church family who offered her compassion, support and friendship. Her family asks that you remember her every time a rainbow arches skyward, for she loved these colorful blessings in her youth.
Stefanie is survived by her three wonderful boys, Lane, Kasey and J.D. Fritz, at the home; her parents, Jerry and Sheri Windsor of Colville, WA; brother, Grady Windsor, of Mount Vernon; sister, Shawna Windsor, of Mount Vernon and a host of friends.

Dawn Lee Simkus
June 19, 1960 - November 27, 2010
Dawn Lee Simkus, a 15-year resident of Colville, WA passed away on November 27, 2010 in Colville at the age of 50. Dawn was born on June 19, 1960 in Seattle, WA the daughter of Richard 'Dick' and Marlene (Taylor) Blakeman.
Dawn was raised in Gibsons, BC While in Gibsons, she attended school through her sophomore year and then began her family. She cherished her time as a homemaker, when able, often moving between communities in both British Columbia and Washington State. Dawn had the 'gift of gab' which was a great compliment to her work as a bartender and waitress. In the early 1980's, Dawn moved to Custer, WA where she continued her work as a waitress and bartender in support of her family. They would later relocate to Surrey, BC in 1995 before settling into the Colville, WA community in 1996. Dawn worked for several years at the Acorn Feeding Station and Saloon in Colville. Due to her declining health, Dawn retired early and resided in her Colville home.
Dawn loved her family and the time shared with her children and grandchildren. She also gave an abundance of loving attention to her dogs. Dawn was a wonderful cook who loved to entertain others with her homemade goodness. By her own example, she taught her children the value of a clean home. Her free spirit and adventurous nature provided for many memorable times, camping, fishing, barbequing and socializing. The memories of her voice, song, smile, laughter and her love of music will be forever cherished by her family. Dawn gave of her self through her thoughts, actions and caring nature.
She is survived by her daughters, Mandy McMurtry, Colville, WA, Robyn Swinburnson and her husband, Todd, Sumas, WA, Taylor VanWicklen, Spokane Valley, WA; son, Chance VanWicklen, Colville, WA; brother, Rick Blakeman, Raymond, WA; grandchildren, Aianna, Skivan, Aubree, Tanner and Maya; and two nephews.
A memorial celebration and potluck for Mrs. Dawn L. Simkus, will begin at 3:00 p.m., Tuesday, December 14, 2010 at Tiny's Diner in Colville, WA. Memorial contributions may be given to the Salvation Army for the Alcohol and Drug Rehabilitation Program, 222 E. Indiana, Spokane, WA 99209.

MARY "JOSIE" GOFORTH
May 23, 1926 - November 22, 2010
Mary Josephine (Josie) Goforth, 84, of Valley, Washington passed away Monday, November 22, 2010 at the home of her son in Valley Washington. Josie was born May 23, 1926 in Jump Off Joe, Washington to Mike and Mary (Salokar) Mally. Josie was the youngest of four children.
On November 17, 1954, Josie married Harold A Goforth of Valley. They lived in the same house all of their 54 years of marriage. They worked side by side as they farmed and raised two children. Josie was a member of the Holy Ghost Catholic Church for 56 years. Josie was a member of the Holy Ghost Altar Society for all those years, serving as an officer for many of those years. Josie helped with the Valley Fair as the baking chairman and also for a few years as the canning chairman, continuing to volunteer at the fair until recently. She enjoyed the outdoors, hunting, fishing, and huckleberry picking. She enjoyed crocheting and embroidering, creating many wonderful gifts for her family and decorating her own home.
Josie was preceded in death by her husband of 54 years, Harold Goforth, her sister Katherine Tomsha, and her brother Albert Mally. She is survived by her sister Helen Murbach, daughter Mary and her husband Les Schneiter of Addy, WA, son Charles (Chuck) and his wife Sheila Goforth of Valley, WA, special nephew and his wife, Pat and Becky Goforth of Valley, WA, grandchildren, Myka Stallings and her husband Robert, Gabriel, Elijah, River, Chance, Faith, Skyler, and Andrew Goforth, great grandsons Jadyn, Mason, and Ethan Stallings, several nieces and nephews.

FLORENCE MAE STEVENS ROLLIS SERLES
November 10, 1932 - November 20, 2010
Florence Stevens Rollis Serles was born November 10, 1932 in Spokane, WA, and died November 20, 2010 at her home in Colville, WA.
Our Mom came from pioneer stock. She was raised in Benewah County, Idaho, until eighth grade. She attended High School in Post Falls, ID. She loved animals and gardening, and helped in the annual canning of their garden produce. These loves were lived throughout her life, and she shared these loves with her children. Her love of animals enriched her children’s lives and they all have animals, carrying on the tradition. Mom loved to feed the wild turkeys during the winter months. She also raised cockatiels for a period of time, and still had a few treasured pet cockatiels. She loved crocheting, sewing, knitting, huckleberrying, and cooking.
Many have benefited from the work of her hands. While recovering in the hospital from an auto accident in 1985, Mom was approached by the Catholic Sisters at Holy Family Hospital with the request that she crochet as many afghans as she was able. Her finished afghans were sent to missionaries around the world.
She also loved her jewelry and wore it constantly. Everywhere she went, people responded to her childlike appreciation of life. Music was another life long love, which she passed on to her children. She taught guitar and accordion.
She continued to play her instruments the rest of her life. Many evenings at home were spent as a family playing and singing.
She accepted the Lord Jesus as her Savior in October 1967, and continued to serve the Lord for the rest of her life. She attended Kettle Falls Assembly of God, Chewelah Assembly of God, Lake City Assembly of God in Medical Lake, WA, Colville Assembly of God and Open Bible Fellowship of Colville. She was active in children’s ministry, was a Sunday School teacher, and a member of the church orchestras.
She was preceded in death by her father, Earl O. Stevens, Sr., of Tacoma, WA, her mother Edna Mae Harbert McCameron Stevens; four siblings, Glen McCameron-Paul, Theodore McCameron-Robnett, Rita Myrtle McCarmeron Bagley-Devoe, and Dean Lyle Stevens, granddaughter Kimberly Nicole Leighton, grandson Eric Russell Rollis, and a great grandson, Timathy Hunter Rollis.
She is survived by a brother, Earl O Stevens Jr, and sister, Harriett (Betty) Stevens Case Graham; five children, Russell L. Rollis (Ellen), Esther L. Leighton Jackson (Carl), James R. Rollis (June), Ruth M. Horton (Richard), Susan J. Brenner (Tom).
She was grandmother to eight: Steven C. Rollis, Charles L. Rollis, April A. Rollis, Amber J. Rollis, Dustin D. Rollis, David H. Brenner, and Michael T. Brenner. Great grandchildren Aaron M.Rollis, Chase A. Monahan-Rollis, Larissa M. Monahan-Rollis, Mesha R. Monahan-Rollis, Jordan R. Rollis,
Charlette E. Rollis, Gage J.L Rollis and Kaiden M. Brenner. Numerous nephews, nieces round out her large family, and a large circle of friends.
The family of Florence Serles wish to thank NE Washington Home Care and Hospice of Spokane for their very kind and compassionate care of their mother. The family also wants to thank the Colville Fresenius Dialysis Center for their kind and compassionate care of their mother.

Dorothy Margaret Jenkins
August 3, 1941 - November 14, 2010
Dorothy Margaret Jenkins, a resident of Chewelah, WA passed away on November 14, 2010 in Chewelah at the age of 69. Dorothy was born on August 3, 1941 in Steubenville, OH the daughter of Frank and Viola Mildred (Lung) Guthrie.
She was raised and attended grade school and high school in Canton, OH. At the age of 15, she married William Weigand and began a family. In 1964, their family moved to operate a family farm in Kent, WA. Dorothy and William later divorced and Dorothy resided with her family in Kent. Dorothy was a career homemaker. She loved the time spent caring for the needs of her son, Jim and daughter, Jeanie. In an effort to support her family, Dorothy also worked outside of the home as a bartender and cake decorator. Dorothy married Bob Jenkins in 1974 and together they resided in Kent. Bob and Dorothy had a wonderful marriage. They shared many interests, including softball. Bob would coach the local team and Dorothy would play. They also shared countless hours traveling on their Triumph motorcycles. Following Bob’s retirement, they moved to Springdale, WA where they embraced retirement. Bob preceded Dorothy in death on September 30, 2005. Dorothy later moved to Chewelah, WA and enjoyed her time under the watchful and loving care of her son.
Dorothy loved to entertain. She cooked many special dinners and had an open home policy where anyone was welcome to come and share a meal with her family. Dorothy proudly carried with her, her Native American background as a Blackfoot. Dorothy played on the local pool/billiards league and as a young woman enjoyed snow skiing. In her later years, one of her most enjoyable past times was fishing at Swawilla Bay. She was a loving and devoted wife, mother and grandmother. Dorothy was also very sentimental and kept every special occasion cards that she received. Her family was her greatest strength and focus. These were mirrored attributes in her children’s reflection of her.
Dorothy was preceded in death by both her brother and sister.
She is survived by her son, James 'Jim' Weigand and his wife, Kirsten, Ford, WA; daughter, Jeanie Murray and her husband, Steve, Granite Falls, WA; eight grandchildren, Jeremy and Willis Franklin, Stefanie, Austin and Harley Ann Weigand, Steven, Patrick, and Michael Murray.
A memorial gathering will begin at 4:00 p.m., Saturday, November 27, 2010 at the home of her son, Jim. All are welcome to attend and bring their favorite food dish to share in her memory. Memorial contributions may be given to any local food bank. Danekas Funeral Chapel and Crematory has been entrusted with her arrangements.
