Raymond Roy Button

Raymond Roy Button, 73 years of age and a lifelong resident of Grays Harbor, passed away on Jan. 3, 2015 at Summit Pacific Medical Center in Elma. He was born on July 12, 1941, in Aberdeen, Wash., the second son of Cecil and Dorotha (Markham) Button. He graduated from Weatherwax High School in 1959. He had lived in Aberdeen most of his life, but fulfilled a longtime dream when he moved to east Grays Harbor 3-˝ years ago.

He married Helen Anderson in 1960, and they were later divorced. He married the love of his life, Charlotte Kolar Allen, on Sept. 15, 1984. She and grandson Connar Button survive him at the family home. Other survivors include children Russell and Cinnamon Button, Steven and Sheila Button, Richard and Diana Kolar, Angela and Shannon Roberts, Marlena and Marshall Born, and son-in-law Denny Lawrence. Also surviving are grandchildren Kevin and Kristal Lawrence, Eric and Alyssa Lawrence, Jason and Bethany Lawrence, Caysie Ann Williams, Garrett Button, Kyle Button, Ryan Roberts, Abigail Bell, Kaden Born, Elizabeth Roller and Cristie Mott; and great-grandchildren Hailey Lawrence, Ashley Lawrence, Cole Lawrence, Emylee Williams and Landon Lawrence.

In Sept. 2013, he was devastated by the loss of his daughter Caprice Lawrence.

He was also preceded in death by his father, Cecil Button, mother, Dorotha Smith, stepfather William Smith, three brothers, Elmer, Larry and Lee, and grandson-in-law Darrold Williams.

Outside of family, his greatest love was baseball, and he was happiest when he was on a baseball field. He played semi-pro baseball for three years in San Jose, Calif., and Portland Ore., before returning to Aberdeen in 1964. He began coaching youth baseball in 1969 when his oldest son started playing and coached both sons through Little League and Babe Ruth, continuing long after his sons were out of the program. He also coached three grandsons through the Babe Ruth program. When the Senior Babe Ruth program was started, he coached both a Babe Ruth and a Senior Babe Ruth team for two years, then Senior Babe Ruth for several more years, during which time his team won two state tournaments and a regional tournament. He retired in 2011 when he moved from Aberdeen. He was very proud of his induction into the Southwest Washington Babe Ruth Hall of Fame in 2008.

At his request, there will be no funeral. However, the family has scheduled a celebration of life on Sunday, Jan. 11, 2 p.m. at the Cosmopolis Lions Club.

Johanna Lillian Liedes

Johanna Lillian Liedes, age 74, of Kenai passed away on Thursday, Jan. 1, 2015 at Central Peninsula Hospital in Soldotna, with her family by her side.

Johanna was born to Carl and Helen (Humberg) Liukko on Monday, March 4, 1940, in Tacoma, Wash.

She moved to Alaska in 1983 and lived in Fairbanks, Alaska from 1988-1991. She and her husband proudly served the Kenai area as longtime owners of Alaska Lanes Family Bowling Center.

Johanna’s family stated, “She was a loving, devoted, caring and beautiful wife, mother and grandmother. She was exceptionally kind, sweet and patient. She always put others before herself. She loved the simple things in life, like walking in the rain, picking blackberries, looking for treasures on the beach and watching a good storm. She also enjoyed her morning coffee and especially loved spending time with her family. She is forever in our hearts.”

She was preceded in death by her parents, Carl and Helen and brothers, Bill and Andy Liukko.

Johanna is survived by her loving husband of 55 years, Kenneth R. Liedes; sons, Keith Liedes of Olympia, Wash. and Karl Liedes of Kenai, Alaska; daughters, Kelly Wheeler of Centralia, Wash., Kerry Postillion of Scottsdale, Ariz., Katrina Raysby of Lombard, Ill. and Kandy Mukenschnabl of St. Charles, Ill.; sister Barbara Forsberg of Darien, Ill.; sister-in-law, Melody Liukko of Aberdeen, Wash.; 33 grandchildren and great-grandchildren and her dog, Daisy.

A private family service will be held in the future.

Donald F. Furth Sr.

OLYMPIA — Aberdeen resident Donald Frederick Furth Sr. died Thursday, Dec. 25, 2014, at Providence St. Peter Hospital in Olympia. He was 90.

A funeral will be held at 11 a.m. Friday at the chapel at the Whiteside Family Mortuary in Aberdeen. Inurnment will follow at Fern Hill cemetery in Aberdeen with a reception to follow at Lion’s Club in Cosmopolis.

Martha E. Goelz

RAYMOND — Pacific County resident Martha Evelyn Goelz died Tuesday, Dec. 30, 2014, at the Willapa Harbor Care Center in Raymond. She was 91.

She was a resident of the Alder House where she enjoyed quilting, crocheting, bingo and making finger puppets for her grandkids.

At her request, there will be no services.

Cremation arrangements were in care of Stoller’s Mortuary in Raymond.

Phyllis Gerry

Phyllis E. Gerry, a 37-year resident of Ocean Shores, died Wednesday, Dec. 31, 2015, at Pacific Care Center in Hoquiam. She was 85.

For 35 years she was the night auditor of the Polynesian Hotel in Ocean Shores.

At her request there will be no formal services. She will be inurned with her husband in Fern Hill cemetery in Aberdeen.

Cremation arrangements were by the Fern Hill Funeral Home in Aberdeen.

John A. Colbert

A celebration of life for McCleary resident John Anthony Colbert, who died Dec. 28, at home, will be at 3 p.m. Saturday, Jan. 17, at McKenzie Baptist Church, 215 McKenzie Road in Olympia.

Cremation arrangements were by Harrison Family Mortuary of Montesano.

Mercedes Ackley

Longtime Montesano resident Mercedes P. Ackley died Saturday, Jan. 3, 2015, at Grays Harbor Community Hospital in Aberdeen. She was 82.

A celebration of her life is scheduled for 2 p.m. today at the KM RV Park in Elma.

Arrangements are by the Coleman Mortuary in Hoquiam.

Judith A. Craft

CHEHALIS — Former Aberdeen resident Judith Ann Craft of Chehalis died Sunday, Jan. 4, 2015, at her home in Chehalis. She was 71.

A private inurnment will take place at Fern Hill cemetery later and an obituary will follow in The Daily World.

Cremation arrangements are by Fern Hill Funeral Home in Aberdeen.

James E. Borden

OLYMPIA — East County resident James Earl Borden died Monday, Jan. 5, 2015, in Olympia. He was 77.

He served in the U.S. Army from 1957 to 1061 and worked at the Weyerhaeuser Pulp Mill in Cosmopolis for over 30 years.

Donations are suggested to Satsop cemetery Fund, C/O Mary Patton, 33 Stephens Road, Elma, WA 98541 or Chehalis Valley Historical Museum, 703 W. Pioneer, Montesano, WA 98563.

Calvin Bryant

SEATTLE — Elma resident Calvin R. Bryant died Tuesday, Jan. 6, 2015, in Seattle. He was 66.

A service is being planned for a later date.

Arrangements are by McComb & Wagner Funeral Home in Shelton.

A gathering of friends and family will be held at 1 p.m. Monday at the Elma Eagles.

Douglas Oleson

TELL CITY, Ind. — Douglas Oleson of Tell City, Ind. died Wednesday, Dec. 24, 2014 at his home. He was 85.

He was born in Aberdeen, served in the U.S. Navy during the Korean War and later taught at every level from kindergarten to doctoral candidates for over 25 years.

At his request, there will be no services.

Arrangements are by Zoercher-Gillick Funeral Home in Tell City.

Marjorie Cloe Trumbel

Long time Ocean Shores resident Marjorie Cloe Trumbel passed away Dec. 22, 2014, at Grays Harbor Health and Rehabilitation Center in Aberdeen. She was 87. Marjorie was born Oct. 15, 1927, in Great Falls, Mont.

On Oct. 21, 1945, Marjorie married Kenneth Franklin Trumbel. They moved to Ocean Shores in 1967, they also lived in Pacific Beach and Ocean City.

Marjorie and Kenny enjoyed bowling together. On March 16, 2010, Kenny passed away. Marjorie had worked as a maid in Ocean Shores for 30 years.

She is survived by her step son, Gary (Cheryl) Trumbel of Ocean Shores, and her siblings, Betty, John, Margaret, Don, Clint and Nancy. In addition to her husband Kenneth, she was preceded in death by seven brothers and sisters.

A memorial service will be held at 1 p.m. on Saturday, Jan. 17, 2015, at Alder Grove Church of God, located at 1800 Coolidge Road in Aberdeen.

Arrangements have been entrusted to Harrison Family Mortuary 311 W Market Street Aberdeen, Wash.

James (Jim) Earl Borden

James (Jim) Earl Borden passed away Monday, Jan. 5, 2015 at Capital Medical Center in Olympia from a 15 year battle with COPD with his wife and family at his side. Jim was born in Elma on March 24, 1937 to John and Mary Borden. Jim has lived most of his life in the Elma/Satsop area.

Jim graduated from Elma High School in 1956. Jim married Yvonne Fisk on Jan. 16, 1959. They have three children, Jim Jr. Bob, and Stacy.

Jim served in the army from 1957 to 1961. When he returned home he was hired at the Weyerhaeuser Pulp Mill in Cosmopolis. He worked at the Pulp Mill for over 30 years retiring in 1994. After he retired, he enjoyed many years volunteering at the Chehalis Valley Historical Museum in Montesano. He served as president for several years until his health kept getting worse. He also loved to volunteer at the Grays Harbor Fair. He helped set up and work the Vintage Equipment display at the fair. He was also very active with the Antique Farm Engine & Tractor Assn. club. He served as president for 4 years. Over the years Jim has enjoyed helping with his class reunions and picnic and getting together with classmates.

Jim is survived by his wife, Yvonne, and children, Jim Jr., (Shawn), Elma, Bob, Elma and Stacy (Mike) Turner of Federal Way. Four grandchildren, Danielle Lott, Federal Way, Ben, Jake and Rylie Borden, Elma.

A gathering of family and friends will be held on Monday, Jan. 12th, at 1:00 p.m. at the Elma Eagles Club at 4th and Young Street. It will be a time to share memories and enjoy a nice lunch with Jim’s family.

The family has requested no flowers but donations may be made to the Satsop cemetery Fund send to Mary Patton at 33 Stephens Rd. Elma, WA 98541 or to the Chehalis Valley Historical Museum at 703 W. Pioneer Ave. Montesano, WA 98563 in memory of Jim Borden.

Veronica Jean Capoeman

Veronica Jean Capoeman, 45 years of age and a longtime Taholah, Wash., area resident, died on Tuesday, Jan. 6, 2015, at Providence St. Peter Hospital in Olympia, Wash. She was born on Oct. 15, 1969, in Aberdeen, Wash., to Horton Sweeney and Charlene Elizabeth (Mowitch) Capoeman Sr.

She was raised and attended school in the Taholah/North Beach area and graduated from the North Beach High School in 1988. She then attended the Institute of American Indian Art in Santa Fe, N.M., for two years. Following this education she returned to Taholah where she had since resided.

Veronica enjoyed crocheting hats and Afghans. She was also an accomplished seamstress and enjoyed making regalia for her family and friends. She loved all types of writing to include poetry. She was active in various types of politics and liked to express her point of view that resulted in numerous discussions. She was well versed in surfing the web to prove her political stands. Veronica was a very good mom to her children and this was one of her outstanding attributes.

She liked spending time in the out-of-doors, taking walks about Taholah with her children as well as hiking in the woods with Edmond to see the grandeur of the reservation. On occasions she would venture to the area malls and casinos.

Veronica is survived by her three children, Donald Hawks, Dakotah Capoeman and Destiny Capoeman, all of Taholah; her significant other, Edmond E. Quilt of Taholah; her two sisters, Melissa Capoeman of Taholah and Trina Capoeman of Aberdeen; her brother, Horton Capoeman Jr. of Taholah, numerous nieces nephews and other relatives.

A funeral service will be held at 11 a.m. on Tuesday, Jan. 13, 2015, at the Coleman Mortuary Chapel in Hoquiam with Mark Eaton, officiating.

Concluding services and interment will follow in the Sunset Memorial Park in Hoquiam.

Direction is by the Coleman Mortuary, 422 – 5th Street in Hoquiam.

Charles Dean Lyons

Charles Dean Lyons, age 75, passed away Saturday, Dec, 6, 2014, at his home in Ocosta, Wash. Dean was born Nov. 26, 1939, to Charles Wayne Lyons and Pauline (Martin) Cooper in Brokenbow, Neb. He moved to this area in 1941 and had lived in Montesano, Ocosta and Onalaska. He attended Ocosta and Montesano schools.

Dean married the love of his life Patricia Ann Broten in Montesano on Jan. 30, 1961. Together they raised three children.

Dean worked as a crab fisherman from 1955 until 1978 and then as a dump truck driver for South Beach Construction until he retired in 2004. He was a longtime member of the Eagles Club and enjoyed gardening, clam digging and western music.

Dean is survived by his wife, Patricia Ann, at the family home, his daughters, Julie Ann Lyons Barrio of Tacoma, JoAnn Lyons of Amanda Park, his son, Dale L. Weaver of Olympia, three sisters, Linda Finlayson of Aberdeen, Anne Cleavenger of Raymond, and Tiny Marty of Lewis County, two brothers, Larry Lee Lyons of Grayland and Gorden Cooper of Rochester, 10 grandchildren and eight great-grandchildren.

Dean was preceded in death by his parents, a sister Sharon Williamson of Olympia, four brothers, James Bennet Lyons of Rochester, Alan Dale Lyons of Westport, Richard Wayne Lyons of Onalaska and Howard Pearson of Shelton.

Memorials can be made to Patricia Ann Lyons in Dean’s memory.

A memorial service will take place on Jan. 17 from 2 to 6 p.m. at the Aberdeen Eagles.

Arrangements have been entrusted to Harrison Family Mortuary 311 W. Market Street Aberdeen, Wash.
