George F. Wakefield
Feb. 27, 1933 - Sept. 24, 2015

George F. Wakefield passed away at Harrison Hospital in Bremerton, Wash. He was 82 years old. He was a resident of Port Ludlow, Wash. as well as Scottsdale, Ariz.

George was born in Port Townsend, Wash., to John and Gertrude (Patsey) Wakefield on Feb. 27, 1933. His father died when he was just nine years old. At the age of 22, George’s mother became almost completely paralyzed by debilitating arthritis and remained in bed until her death at age 63. She was able to use her left arm to eat and write. From his childhood into his adulthood, George cared for her, even moving her hospital bed down to the beach for family gatherings. He also cared for his three year old younger brother, Bobby, and he did so much of Bobby’s life. Bobby died Jan. 27, 2011 at the age of 74 in Aberdeen, Wash.

George attended Port Townsend School in his younger years, and in his high school years, he hitchhiked 10 miles every day to Chimacum High and back to his mother’s home in Port Townsend. He liked the sports program better at Chimacum. He was pretty clever; the people at the Crown Zellerbach paper mill were soon picking him up and he got “regular” rides to and from school. He was No. 4 on the football team, and proud of it.

This was also where he met his high school sweetheart, Georgia Marie. The Korean War was going on and it was calling a lot of the young men from the county. So George joined the Navy, quitting school in order to do so. He later finished his schooling with the Navy, graduating, with the class of ‘53 at Chimacum High. This was also the year Georgia graduated. He served four years on the carrier USS Valley Forge, serving in Korea many times. After the Navy, he became a longshoreman, working for over 39 years at ILWU Local 24 in Aberdeen, Wash.

He was an active, longtime member of the Eagles, VFW, the Elks and the Aberdeen Foot Printers. For the past 25 years he went to the Navy’s USS Valley Forge reunions. He was vice president of the Valley Forge West Coast Chapter and was a stalwart in the Local 24 Longshoreman Union.

Sports, especially football, was a mainstay for family and friends over the years. Many happy, fun-filled barbeque parties were spent at his home with seven televisions!

Speaking of families, he always wanted to be from a big family; three marriages brought him 13 step-children. His fourth and last marriage to his high school sweetheart, Georgia, brought him three more step-sons: Terry, Gary and Dee Gaston all of Seattle, Wash. He also had a surrogate daughter, Lisa (Brendan) O’Neil from Cave Creek, Ariz. with twin daughters.

Ironically, he passed away at 6 a.m. on Sept. 24; Georgia’s first husband, Stanley, also passed on Sept. 24, 19 years earlier, at 9 p.m.

George and Georgia traveled and cruised the world together, enjoying each other’s company at ports along the way. They had so many busy years, yet took time for studying the genealogy of their families, going back to the pioneer days of the Patsey and Eldridge families that they were descendants of. They also loved their hobby of photography.

Goodbye my love … We will all miss you.

A celebration of life will be held on Saturday, Oct. 17, 2015 at the Red Cedar Hall on the Jamestown Tribal campus, at 12 o’clock high noon.

Ronald “Ron” R. Sperline

Ronald Remon Sperline — husband, father, grandfather, great-grandfather, friend, educator— passed away peacefully at home in Waterville, Wash., on Aug. 13, 2015.

Ronney was born to Pauline Heer and Clarence A. Sperline in East Wenatchee, Wash., on May 29, 1928, the youngest of four brothers. His father died in a farm accident before Ronney’s first birthday, and Ronney grew up in the East Wenatchee area with his mother and brothers surrounded by his father’s large family; his father was the oldest of 13 children. In 1938 Ronney’s mother married Harry Erkenbrack and the family moved to Selah, Wash.

An excellent athlete, Ronney played football, basketball, and baseball at Selah High School. In addition to athletics, he served as student body president his senior year. He graduated with the Class of 1946.

Ronney attended Eastern Washington State College in Cheney, Wash., where he played on the college basketball team. Two years into his studies, Ronney trained to fly airplanes as a cadet in the U.S. Air Force Aviation Cadet Training Program at Randolph Air Force Base near San Antonio, Texas. After his training, he returned to EWC to complete his education. He married his sweetheart Lola Ammerman and earned a degree in education.

Ron taught and coached in small school districts in Washington and Idaho before moving his family to the Washington coast to become principal of the Ocosta School District in 1955. Ron and Lola eventually bought their first home in Westport near the high school. Mr. Sperline served as principal at Ocosta for seventeen years leaving a legacy of learning and respect for the students and community through his example of living his life grounded in common sense and honesty combined with his ever-present sense of humor.

Ron earned his U.S. Coast Guard license to operate passenger vessels and spent summers skippering salmon fishing charter boats in Westport, running many boats and owning two. For as many salmon as Ron helped his passengers catch, it was well known that he disliked eating fish—steak and potatoes for him.

After six years as principal of Montesano High School, Ron and Lola settled in Waterville, Wash., in 1978 where Ron served as superintendent of the Waterville School District. When he retired from education, Ron kept busy tending his garden where the raspberries flourished and became the prime ingredient in Lola’s raspberry jam. Year to year, he varied his vegetables, each well-tended and delicious. Along with zucchini, he grew a “Best of Show” pumpkin that was entered in the fair by a neighbor without his knowledge. To the delight of his family and friends, Ron built wooden bird houses, planters, and benches. Retirement for Ron proved to be a fulfilling occupation.

Whether spoofing with his grandchildren or sending someone to buy striped paint, Ron loved a funny story and would joke with a straight face before the laughter broke out. He was a generous friend always willing to stop and chat, help with a project, or merely lend his tools. He enjoyed watching old westerns, rodeo bull riding, and the Mariners on TV.

When asked what he felt was his most important achievement in his life, Ron responded, “helping hundreds of young people with their education and raising five wonderful children.”

Ron is survived by the love of his life, Lola Sperline; his children, Ronda Hull, Marlys (Sylvester) Jaime, Larry (Mari) Sperline, Jerry (Mindy) Sperline, and Celia (Gary) Gilger; two brothers, Les Sperline and Keith Erkenbrack; eleven grandchildren, three great-grandchildren, and Rob Duncan, cherished friend and caretaker.

He was preceded in death by his father Clarence A. Sperline, his mother Pauline Erkenbrack, his step-father Harry Erkenbrack, his mother-in-law Ida Ammerman, his father-in-law Arthur Ammerman, two brothers, John and Clarence (Bus), and grandson Adam Sperline.

Ron requested that there be no service.
