Jack C. Reeves

Jack C. Reeves, 65 years of age and a lifetime Harborite, died on Thursday, May 7, 2015, at his home in Aberdeen, Wash. He was born on May 24, 1949, in Aberdeen to Ivan Ralph and Verda (Duncan) Reeves.

As an infant, Jack lived in Hoquiam and attended the Hoquiam schools, graduating from Hoquiam High School. He then attended Grays Harbor College for two years. After his schooling, he had worked for various mills and ski lodges.

Jack met the love of his life, Mary, and they were married on Feb. 11, 1984, at Carson City, Nev. Jack worked as a bus driver for Grays Harbor Transit Authority until his retirement last year after 30 plus years on the job.

He had attended the First Baptist Church of Hoquiam. His hobbies were camping, hunting, fishing, clam digging, wood working, family barbecues and riding his Harley Davidson. He had traveled to Arizona, California, Utah, Nevada and Sturgis, S.D. Jack wants to be remembered for his kind heart, willingness to help others and the love for his family.

Jack is survived by his wife, Mary Reeves of the Aberdeen family home; daughters, Deborah (Brigham) Ward of Tonasket and Myrna (Edward) Sickels of Brady; son, Paul (Kathy) Griffin of Castle Rock; sisters, Judy Meredith of Ravensdale and Kathy Cain of Olympia; his brother, Terry Reeves of Tacoma; his grandchildren, Teasha (Robert) Bundy of Elma, Brittaney (David) Downs of Aberdeen, Derik Ward of West Valley, Utah, Tyler Griffin of Aberdeen, Tonya Coyne of Bothell, Tamera Hettinger of Toutle and Patrick Coyne of Vancouver, Wash. and by five great-grandchildren. He was preceded in death by his parents, a sister, Carol Mae Brown and a brother, Kenny “Bones” Reeves.

Jack belonged to ABATE; Wisemen Motorcycle Club and the Aberdeen Eagles.

The family requests donations to the Wisemen Motorcycle Club, 23 “O” Street in Hoquiam.

A funeral service was held at 11 a.m., Tuesday, May 12, 2015, at the Coleman Mortuary Chapel in Hoquiam with vault interment at the Sunset Memorial Park in Hoquiam.

A Celebration of Life with a potluck gathering for family and friends, will be hosted by the Wisemen Motorcycle Club on Sunday, May 24, 2015, at 1:00 p.m. at the John’s River Lodge, 1564 State Route 105 on the Westport Highway.

Direction is by the Coleman Mortuary, 422 – 5th Street in Hoquiam, Wash.

Mildred Elizabeth Riekki

Mildred Elizabeth Riekki, born Jan. 17, 1925, in Hoquiam, Wash., passed away on May 9, 2015, in Monroe, Wash. She was 90. Mildred graduated from Hoquiam High School, Class of 1942. She was an accomplished musician and a lifetime member of Beta Sigma Phi Sorority. Mildred loved to travel the world and did so, at every opportunity. She worked as an administrative assistant for Weyerhaeuser for many years. Mildred is survived by her nephew Rodger Ferguson (Carol Newsome), nieces Laurice Riekki and Kristine Maxwell, cousins Doris Boyd, Vern Havo, Carol Overdeep, and many other extended family members and friends. She was preceded in death by her husband Paul Riekki, both parents, and siblings Arvo Tasanen, Laimi Rollins and Aili Ferguson. Everyone who knew Mildred was enriched by her love of life and her spirit for friendship. Memorials in her name may be made to: The Salvation Army, any animal shelter in your area or music programs for youth, anywhere. Pamela Ruth Hart

Pamela Ruth Hart, a longtime resident of Hoquiam, passed away on April 26, 2015, at the age of 66. Pamela was born to William and Helen Thayer on Sept. 5, 1948.

She grew up in Satsop where she attended elementary school. She graduated from Elma High School in 1966. Pamela was a shy child that loved animals and the outdoors. She enjoyed camping and walking on the beach.

She moved to Hoquiam after marrying Edward West Jr. (deceased). They had two children, Michelle and Edward III.

Pamela worked many years as a waitress and met the love of her life, Michael Hart, while working at the Aberdeen Bowling Alley. They were married in December of 1990. Pamela and Michael made a good team and loved spending time together. They had many wonderful adventures over the 24 years of their marriage.

She later went on to work as a cashier at the Fairway Grocery and then the Emerson Grocery. There she had many regular customers that would come by when she was working, because they enjoyed the friendly service and conversation. She loved spending time with her family and especially when her grandchildren came to visit.

Surviving relatives include her husband, Michael Hart; a daughter, Michelle Shedd (James); a son, Edward West III (Kelli); her sisters, Cheryl Fisher (Lindell) and Bette Kinsman; her, brother, James Thayer (Geri); a granddaughter, Erin Shedd; her grandsons, Jacob Lord and Ryan Shedd and other relatives.

A memorial service is being planned and will be announced at a later date.

Arrangements are by the Coleman Mortuary in Hoquiam.

Helen M. Corey

Helen M. Corey of Hoquiam, Wash., passed away on May 3, 2015, at St. Peter hospital in Olympia, Wash., on her 91st birthday.

She was born on May 3, 1924, to John and Ella (Ryckman) Van Beek in a farmhouse west of Westfield, N.D. During the Dust Bowl the family moved to Shelton, Wash., where she graduated from Shelton High School.

Helen married John ‘Jack’ Corey on May 23, 1942. He died in 2006.

When Jack was oversees during WWII, Helen gave birth to their daughter, Diane and moved to Aberdeen with her parents and went to work at the Rayonier mill in Hoquiam. Following the war, they moved around the Olympic Peninsula quite a bit, including Camp Grisdale, Clearwater and the upper Hoh River.

Helen enjoyed being a housewife. She loved to grow vegetables, canning, fishing and dig clams. She loved crafting. She belonged to Beta Sigma Phi (Xi Epsilon) Chapter, was the Valentine Girl in 1971.

In her mid 60’s, she helped her sister in her wild mushroom business, buying and trucking all over the Pacific Northwest. She also researched and compiled family tree information and later created volumes of data that have been copyrighted and scanned so that others could benefit. Helen was a kind and loving person, admired and loved by all who knew her.

Helen is survived by her daughter, Diane (Bob) Kaczmarczyk of Hoquiam; brothers: Russel (Donna) Van Beek of Lebanon, Ore., Norman Van Beek of Clinton, Mont.; sister Ruby (Charlie) McBride of Montesano, Wash.; Grandsons: John (Cassie) Kaczmarczyk and Justin (Sharm) Kaczmarczyk; eleven great grandchildren and two great-great grandchildren and numerous nieces and nephews.

There will be a celebration of Helen’s life on Saturday, May 16, 2015 at 1 p.m. in Fern Hill Funeral Home’s Chapel. A potluck reception will follow at United Methodist Church, 2nd and Broadway, Aberdeen. A private graveside will be held later at Fern Hill cemetery, Aberdeen, WA.

Arrangements are entrusted to Fern Hill Funeral Home, 2208 Roosevelt St., Aberdeen, Wash.

Harvey Burton Williams

Harvey Burton Williams passed on to his glory after a courageous struggle with cancer, on May 1, 2015, in Olympia, Thurston Co., Wash.

He was born Aug. 2, 1943, at the old St. Joseph Hospital in Aberdeen, Wash., to Albert Leroy and Nettie Elizabeth (Scott) Williams.

Harvey grew up in the Montesano area, attending schools in Montesano, Cosmopolis and Aberdeen, and attended the Montesano Church of God.

Harvey worked one year for Edith Esses in Montesano, at the Esses Berry Shed (during the cascara and into the cone season). He worked for many mills through the years including, Western Lumber, Evans, Rayonier Sawmill, E. C. Miller Cedar Lumber Co., and McCleary Plywood, and belonged to the IWA Union. He drove log truck, and also worked at a shake mill, and logged up at Sylvia Lake for a while. He last worked driving long haul for Schneider International Trucking Co.

He liked working on older cars, buying and selling or trading vehicles, going fishing, clam digging, and little dogs.

Harvey loved the great outdoors. He enjoyed HAM radios, and was a member of “Grays Harbor Amateur Radio Club”, and talked to people all over the world, and made many friends.

Harvey married Clarine “Punky” Price in 1967, and helped raise her five children. They attended the Elma Church of God, the Neighborhood Church in Central Park, and the Montesano Assembly of God Pentecostal Church.

Harvey is preceded in death by his wife Punky, his parents, a sister, Shirlie, and two step-sons: Loren Harris Jr. and Leon Harris.

He is survived by his brother Albert Williams Jr. of Portland, Ore., sisters: Janette Welch of Elma, Wash., Karen Olson of Hoquiam, Wash., and Virginia Cheney of Baudette, Minn.; his niece and loving caregiver - Diane Comer, three step-children, and several step-grandchildren. He is also survived by countless nieces and nephews and cousins.

Harvey’s wishes are that his remains be cremated.

A Celebration of Life will be held at 1 p.m., on Friday, May 15, at New Beginnings Open Bible Church, 301 N B St. in Aberdeen. A potluck luncheon will follow.

Gertie (Hampton) Emerson

We were blessed to have known and loved Gertie Emerson, known to most people as “Aunt Gertie, ” during her 92 years on this Earth. She was a loving wife, mother, sister, aunt and friend.

She died peacefully at Mother Joseph’s Care Center on Sunday, May 3, 2015, after a long illness. Gertie was born in Virginia on Nov. 28, 1922, to Wade and Ora Bella Hampton.

She moved to Washington as a child and went to school in Raymond. She met a handsome man named Ted Emerson and they were married on Sept. 14, 1943. They had one son, James W. Emerson. He was the light of their life. Him enlisted in the Army during the Vietnam War and sadly lost his life on Aug. 25, 1966, at the age of 22. His death was very difficult for both of them and they never fully recovered from the loss of their only son.

Gertie was one of ten children. Her sister Della and her brothers Lynn and Gordon preceded her in death. She is survived by siblings: Ray of Eugene, Ore., Frank (and wife Francis) of Tacoma, Wash., Claude of Raymond, Vollie (and wife Betty) of Raymond, Jean Freeman (and husband Bucky) of West Virginia, and Virginia Betrozoff of Raymond. She had many nieces and nephews including Tanya Brown of Olympia, Kim Grabski of Raymond and April Whitaker of Olympia.

Gertie loved her daily walks, gardening, playing cards and late night movies. Her favorite color was hot pink and her nails were perfectly manicured wearing her favorite color! She also loved butterflies.

Graveside services will be held at 11:00 a.m. Saturday, May 16, 2015, at the Fern Hill cemetery in Menlo. A casual lunch will follow at The Barge restaurant in Raymond for family and friends. Arrangements are in care of Stoller’s Mortuary in Raymond.

James (Jimmy) Richards

James David Richards, 48 years of age and a resident of Aberdeen, passed away at his home on Sunday, May 3, 2015. He was born Oct. 13, 1966, in Aberdeen, Wash., to David and Kathy (Morton) Richards. He attended school in Aberdeen and graduated in 1985.

Following graduation, he worked in the concrete business. In 1992 he went to work for the Postal Service in Aberdeen. He was a member of the Sons of the American Legion.

Jimmy enjoyed spending time with his family and friends, especially proud of his nephews Ryan and Jacob for racing motocross. He was also a huge sports fan and loved the Seahawks, Huskies and Mariners. Jimmy played baseball all through school and also bowled from the age of six until adulthood. He loved to cook, especially for his wife Janet.

Jimmy is survived by his wife Janet at the family home, step-daughter Amanda Prabasco, his mother Kathy (Morton) Richards, brother Ed (Heather) Richards and nephews Ryan and Jacob Richards. He was preceded in death by his father Dave Richards, grandparents Jim and Evelyn Morton and his uncle Tom Morton.

There will be a celebration of life/potluck held at 4 p.m. on May 16 at the 40 Et 8 Club, 2313 Simpson Ave., Aberdeen, Wash.

Arrangements were entrusted to Harrison Family Mortuary of Aberdeen, Wash.

Shari Nell Shelton

Longtime Harbor resident Shari Nell Shelton, age 65, passed away on April 26, 2015, in Aberdeen, Wash. She was born on March 29, 1950, in Aberdeen to Agnes Patricia Osburn and Jack Eugene Crawford.

She enjoyed running marathons and scrapbooking.

Shari is survived by her son, s Michael Wayne Johnson and Sean Eugene Johnson; brothers, Donald Crawford and Tom Crawford, and a sister, Linda Bissell.

A memorial service will be held at 2 p.m. on Saturday, May 9, 2015, at the Hoquiam Kingdom Hall, 1000 K Street, Hoquiam, WA 98550.

William N. Self

William N. Self, 84, passed away on May 5, 2015 at home in McCleary, Wash., surrounded by his loving family.

He was born Oct. 3, 1930 in Clarksville, Ark. to Floyd and Dessalene Self.

He is survived by his wife Georgia, daughters Kathy Sample (Kelly), and Brenda Parker (Skip), son Michael Self (Sheri), sisters Anna Briner and Carol Linton, and his 10 grandchildren and 15 great-grandchildren.

He was preceded in death by daughter Billie Self Vatne, parents Floyd and Dessalene Self, sisters Patsy Self and Shirley Cooper.

William has touched the lives of many people in his 50 years of ministry as an evangelist with the Assemblies of God and Northwest Life Center in Elma.

A celebration of life will be held at Abundant Life Church, 100 Technical Way, Satsop, Wash. at 11 a.m. on Monday, May 11 and a reception will immediately follow at the McCleary VFW Hall. A viewing will be held Saturday, May 9 at Whiteside Funeral Home, Young Street, Elma, Wash. from 10 a.m. - 12 p.m.

Bruce Andrew Englund, Sr.

Bruce Andrew Englund Sr., age 65, a longtime resident of Hoquiam, died on Friday, May 1, 2015, at his home in Hoquiam. Mr. Englund was born in Aberdeen on June 16, 1949, to James and Inez Viola (Anderson) Englund. He attended local schools and graduated from Hoquiam High School in 1967. He later attended Grays Harbor College, South Puget Sound Community College and Bates College in Tacoma.

Bruce had worked for ITT Rayonier, Hoquiam Plywood, Casa Mia and Graham Steel in Tacoma.

He loved NASCAR and enjoyed watching all sporting events, especially the Mariners.

He had been a member of the Hoquiam Elks and was past Exalted Ruler.

Surviving relatives include his son, Bruce A. Englund Jr. of Montesano; grandchildren, Michael, Kyle and Bryce Englund, all of Montesano and a sister, Yvonne Jump of Hoquiam. In addition to his parents, two brothers, Jim and Richard Englund, preceded him in death.

A private urn committal was held at Hoquiam’s Sunset Memorial Park.

Cremation arrangements are by the Coleman Mortuary in Hoquiam.

Lila Allaway

Lila Allaway passed away on April 25, 2015, at her home in Hoquiam. She was born July 23, 1936, in Panguitch, Utah, to Clinton and Irene Gavin.

On June 26, 1964, Lila married Robert C. Allaway. He passed away Aug. 15, 2010. Lila and Bob owned and operated Harbor Pallet Company.

Lila is survived by two daughters Deanna (Lonnie) Courts and Debra (Robin) Thompson; two stepdaughters Patty (Lee) Kester and Deborah Bartol along with numerous grandchildren and great-grandchildren.

There will be a celebration of life/potluck held on May 16, 2015, at noon. It will be at Brian and Ashley Courts’ house at 829 U.S. Highway 101, Hoquiam.

Arrangements are by Harrison Family Mortuary.

Anita Begley

Anita Begley, “grandma”, 69, was a lifetime resident of the Harbor. She passed away peacefully at her home on July 31, 2015, surrounded by her family and loved ones.

Anita was born on April 9, 1946, to Bill and Minnie Crist in Aberdeen and was raised in Hoquiam. Anita attended Central grade school and Hoquiam High School.

Anita married the love of her life and best friend James A. Begley Sr. on Oct. 9, 1962, in Montesano. James passed away at his home on Oct. 31, 1998.

Anita was a homemaker. She and her husband raised five children and several foster children. She enjoyed rummage sales and spending time with her family, especially her children and grandchildren.

Anita is survived by her siblings Judy Watson of Aberdeen, Robin Pedrazzetti of Winlock, Pete Komboukos of Aberdeen, Joe Philbrick of Aberdeen and John Philbrick of Alaska; her children Teresa and Jose Diaz Martinez, James A. Begley Jr., Virginia Kalama, Nancy Valencio, Heladio Sanchez Sr. and others; her grandchildren Sapo and Brianna Sanchez, Amy and Ramon Garcia Gonzales, Puni and Rosa Sanchez, Cielo and Adrian Wires, Summer Sanchez, Romeo Sanchez, James Jr. and Larissa Begley, and many more and great-grandchildren Pelon, Julietta, Juan, Payton, Porter, Haiden, Hallie and many more.

She is preceded in death by both of her parents, brother Ted Komboukos, sister Anna Gray, husband James Begley Sr., daughter Tina Lundry and son-in-law Mel Lundry.

A special thank you to her doctor and friend Dr. Craig Teveliet, and to her hospice nurses.

A celebration of life potluck will be held at 1 p.m. on Sunday, Aug. 9 at 707 Water Street in Aberdeen.
